Elias had just left, and Maria had finally been filled in by the healers on what they thought had happened last night. They didn't have a definite answer as to why she'd gone... well insane and started to hallucinate. They'd need to run more tests for a more definite answer. But they had a few theories. Exhaustion and stress seemed extremely unlikely to Maria. They all seemed to think that Maria must have come in contact with some sort of poisonous substance that caused hallucinations. Maria had been in the Greenhouse with Viola... But they hadn't been in one of the magical ones. Still, that seemed to be the fan favorite and most likely explanation. One of the healers had let immediately to investigate all of the greenhouses to try and find the source. Less then half an hour later they'd returned with a possibility. While hallucinations was a very uncommon side affect for coming in contact with the plant, it did happen from time to time. With people that were particularly vulnerable to it. Well, at least now they had a source. Unfortunately there wasn't much to do to fix it. This particular plant did have an antidote, but it took a week to brew and it's side affects usually only lasted 24-48 hours. It'd just be better to tough it out.
Only after all of this investigation did they finally let Maria go see Viola. Maria's burns had been minor, painful, yes, but not that serious. Viola's... were much worse. Thankfully they were healing. The school had a talented group of Healers. Viola was still asleep when Maria pushed the privacy curtain open and slipped inside. For the first few moments, Maria just stared down at their partner. Her expression was a mix between shame and deep remorse. She'd never meant to hurt Viola... Letting out a deep breath she took the chair next to the bed and pulled her knees up to her chest so her arms could wrap around them. The girl dared not try to touch her partner. Almost as if she worried flames might appear again, or worse... That Viola would wake up and not want her to touch them. So, she'd wait. She'd kept to herself here, and just watch over her partner, desperate for their eyes to open so she could apologize.

Viola had spent most of their time in the hospital wing sleeping. That wasn’t surprising, considering that when they had come into the hospital wing it had already been nighttime, and they had been more than worse for the wear. Viola vaguely remembered one of the healers saying that the potions they were being given for their burns would make them drowsy, which they were not a fan of. They liked it when they were sharp, and alert, and able to do things. Their only solace was in the fact that the healers had also insisted that they needed to wake up for meal times to give their body the energy to heal – otherwise Viola was a little worried that they would end up sleeping for several days straight. The thing was, waking up from sleeping wasn’t exactly pleasant. The healers had given them salves for their burns in addition to a pain potion, but even the combined effect of the different drugs wasn’t enough to push the pain away completely. It was just like turning down the volume – Viola wasn’t going to be in agony every time they woke up, but the pain was definitely there.
Because of that, Viola tried to wake up slowly. They started by flickering their eyelids a couple of times. If their lashes had still been there, they would have fluttered, but as things were, Viola still had no eyelashes, and only the barest traces of eyebrows. Then, they wiggled their fingers, which got them used to the feeling of moving their muscles and stretching the taut, red skin. After those two preparations, though, Viola had had enough. They opened their eyes completely, letting the light and colors and shapes flood over them. Viola slowly pushed themselves to an upright position, whimpering a little as they put weight on their hands to sit up. They did all of this before even registering that there was a person at their bedside. Viola turned their head, their breath catching in their throat as they saw who it was. “Maria.” The word fell from their lips like a benediction, soft and sweet and grateful. Viola had successfully managed to stave off tears the night before, but there was no hope for them now. Tears began to trickle down their cheeks as they just stared at their girlfriend. She was safe, and she was sane. That was all Viola had wanted.

The healers were doing a good job of repairing the damage from the burns Maria had inflicted, but they couldn't hide the fact of how bad it'd been. Maria could see the singes, the familiar pink and red skin of healing flesh. Maria had more then just burned Viola. Viola was extremely lucky.... That help had been so close and the healers so talented. Burns like that could have easily killed someone. It was a reminder to everyone just how dangerous fire was.
Maria didn't dare to move or even breath as Viola stirred. Testing their movement. Their injuries. Before finally rousing completely and sitting up. Still, Maria refused to even twitch as she just watched as if transfixed. And when Viola finally noticed her and spoke her name? Well, Maria tightened her arms even more on her knees, ensuring that her whole body was curled up into the tightest ball possible and hopefully out of reach. She still didn't breath. Waiting for Viola's reaction. One that... she honestly couldn't guess.
Crying was the last thing she'd been expecting. Her eyes widened immediately, and she finally managed to draw in a much needed and sharp breath. She didn't know what sort of tears these were, but if there was any way to make herself smaller she would have. Maria... didn't handle crying well. "I'm sorry." She blurted out quickly, frantic. "Please, I'm sorry. Just.... Just don't cry...."

At first Viola hadn't registered the position that Maria had been sitting in, curled so tightly into a ball that she barely looked human at all. Maria said that she was sorry, and Viola paused, unsure what to say. Their girlfriend repeated their apology, begging them not to cry, and Viola froze. They hadn't meant to make this any worse than it already was, but they didn't know how to stop the wars of joy and relief. They hadn't been told anything about what had happened to Maria, so to see that she was alright was just...overwhelming. They tried to take a deep breath to steady themself, but expanding their lungs was difficult and Viola found themself almost hyperventilating instead. After a moment more of trying to control their breathing, it went back to normal and Viola was finally able to speak. "There's nothing to apologize for. That wasn't you." It was Maria's body, but not her mind, and if they had proven anything, Viola hoped it was that it was Maria's mind that she loved above all else. "But I was me when I stunned you." There was no use in dancing around that, and Viola would much rather have them both air their guilts at the same time. "I thought - I thought that I had hurt you." They admitted. "I am sorry, Maria." Not just for the stunning spell, but for not knowing how to help. "My Maria." Viola added, because she was herself again - she was Viola's Maria again. There were still tears on Viola's cheeks, but they had done what Maria asked, and stopped crying. They couldn't, however, find the strength to wipe the remaining tears away.

Nothing to apologize for? Really? Had Viola not seen their burns?! How the hell did they think nothing of their injuries? Maria might have been hallucinating but that had still been her. Despite what Viola seem to think. But then about them stunning her? Why were they even concerned about that? Squeezing her legs a little tighter Maria vigorously shook her head. "Viola... I wouldn't have stopped. You did what you had to." To make sure she didn't hurt anyone else. "You should have stunned me sooner." Was Maria's only 'complaint'. Before she'd hurt Viola.
Taking a deep and heavy breath Maria closed her eyes and let her forehead rest against her knees. "I.... don't know what overcame me. They think that.... Well they think that I had an allergic reaction to something. A bad one." Allergic reaction wasn't exactly what they'd said but it was close enough to what they'd been getting at. Basically she'd reacted badly to something. Badly enough to have extreme hallucinations. Bad enough to make her do the one thing she'd done time and time again because she couldn't control the fire. Only thing time someone she'd cared about had been the one hurt.

Maria seemed vehemently opposed to Viola’s guilt about Stunning her, saying that she wouldn’t have stopped, and they had done what they had to. They sighed. Arguing with Maria about this wasn’t going to get them anyways, but they still wished that their girlfriend saw herself the way they saw her. When Maria said that they should have stunned her sooner, Viola shook their head just as vigorously. “I had to give you a chance.” They replied stubbornly. They wanted to make sure that that was really their last option, and there hadn’t been a different way to get Maria out of her psychosis. “Besides, I was the only other person harmed.” Viola said, brushing away the concern. The burns had hurt, but knowing that they didn’t try everything possible to save Maria would have hurt more.
When their girlfriend explained that the whole thing had happened because of an allergic reaction, Viola snorted. “That is the weirdest allergy I have ever seen.” They said dubiously. That just didn’t seem to fit with what had happened. Everything had come on so suddenly, and Maria hadn’t been exposed to any allergen right prior to the event…had she? Finally, Viola raised their hand up to wipe at their cheek, wincing a little as the skin on their elbow stretched when they bent their joint. At least now the sign of their weakness was gone.

Viola's words, like much of what they said, surprised her. Maria's eyes widened slowly as she listened to her partners words. About giving Maria a chance. How many chances had Viola given her already? And how they were the only one that had been hurt. The only one. One was more then enough when it was Viola. "Hurting one person is more than enough when it's you." Maria answered, as she unwrapped her arms from her legs and let her feet finally fall to the ground.
At the comment of it being the weirdest allergy they'd seen Maria scoffed. "It's better than the sleep deprived or stressed theories they had." Because if it'd been either of those wouldn't she have hallucinated long before now? As Viola moved to wipe away their tears she leaned forward, reaching out her own hand but freezing before her finger tips touched Viola's cheek. After a breath of a moment she leaned back, bringing her hand back to herself. She wasn't ready to touch Viola yet. Not since the last time she'd touched them she'd hurt them. "They said you're healing well." she forced herself to say instead.

Viola gave Maria a weak smile when she said that one person was more than enough to be hurt, when that one person was them. They willfully ignored the implication that if it had been anyone but Viola – or Elias, though that went unsaid – then one person would have been an acceptable casualty. Collateral damage in the war that was Maria and her mind. Viola watched as Maria finally uncurled herself from her ball position, and they wished they knew what to say to her that would make her feel better, but wouldn’t make her freak out about the emotions behind it.
“Hogwarts needs to get better healers.” Viola said with a smirk. That wasn’t really true – they really did appreciate all the work that the nurses had done to help them get better – but nothing they were saying seemed to add up. For just a moment Viola wondered if they ought to be a healer, but that thought was cut short by Maria leaning towards them, her fingertips just a breath away from their cheek. Maria leaned back before actually touching Viola, and their shoulders sagged a little in disappointment. “It would be a shame if this face was ruined, right?” Viola said, attempting another joke to get Maria to smile. They honestly didn’t care much for their looks, but it was the kind of thing that people laughed at – hurt people making jokes at their own expense.

Maria rolled her eyes at Viola's comment. She wasn't going to go after the healers right now, especially since they were the ones healing her partner. But Viola was right. All the theories sounded absurd. "We could always go with I am simply going mad." Maria commented with a shrug. Without a doubt most people would believe that theory, especially those people that knew her. She'd been accused of insanity more then once. "I'm sure most would believe that theory." And surprisingly? Maria wasn't that bothered by it. She'd been hearing that for years. It didn't even phase her anymore.
She saw the way Viola's shoulders sagged ever so slightly. Unfortunately Maria didn't move, couldn't bring herself to try to touch Viola yet. Viola shouldn't even want Maria to touch them. Not after how badly they'd been hurt. "I do happen to like that face of yours." Viola had been joking, but Maria's admittance was quite serious. And, quite normal for Maria. She happened to like complimenting Viola.

Maria said that there was another theory on the table – that she was simply going mad – and Viola made a face at that suggestion. “I suppose it does make sense.” They said, blinking a few times before adding, “It would certainly explain why you agreed to be my girlfriend.” Normally Viola wasn’t one for self-deprecation, but if Maria was going to do it, then they were going to, too, if only to show her how absurd that sort of accusation sounded to ears other than her own. They couldn’t argue, however, that others who didn’t know Maria would think that she was perfectly capable of going insane.
Viola smirked a little when Maria said that she did like their face. That hadn’t been something that they had ever worried about. Maria made it obvious how physically attracted she was to Viola, and had tried to act on that attraction – often. “Good to hear it.” They said with a small smile. “Maybe sometime you can show me the other parts of me you like, too.” Viola added cheekily. Maybe Maria’s aversion to touching them would dissipate if she was presented with a prize she had been seeking for so long.

Maria frowned when Viola said her insanity would explain why she'd agreed to be their girlfriend. That had definitely not been a lapse in her sanity. And it'd given Maria just the boost she needed to finally get off of that chair and move to sit down on the edge of Viola's bed, her hand resting on the other side of Viola's legs. "That was my most sane decision all year." It would have only proven her insanity if she'd told Viola no. After chasing them all year? Why would she have refused?
Now at the edge of the bed, barely not touching Viola, she finally started to smile widely. Viola's usual bite was coming back, only this time in a flirtatious manner. "What if I like all of you?"

Viola couldn’t help but smile when Maria said agreeing to date them had been her sanest decision all year. It was funny, because most would say that it was Viola’s least sane, trying to tame a girl that, for all intents and purposes, seemed untamable. Viola had realized since then, though, that their goal wasn’t to tame Maria – just to love her, and see where things went from there. It was strange, but once Viola had stopped expecting Maria to stop being so wild, she had kind of fallen into line. She still wasn’t perfect, but…it was better than Viola had expected then they had first agreed to date her.
When Maria sat close to them, Viola was half temped to close the distance between their leg and Maria’s body, but they wanted her to make that decision. “You sure have a funny way of showing it.” Viola said with a raise of their eyebrows when Maria claimed she liked all of them. “You’ve been in here ten minutes and still haven’t given me a kiss.”

Having a partner.... Being someone's girlfriend. It was surprisingly easier then Maria had expected. There were, of course, many times when it still baffled Maria to no end. It frustrated her half of he time. But when she wasn't baffled or frustrated.... It was easy. It wasn't just Viola's body that she was attracted to either. Their sharp mind. Their sometimes intense spunk. The periodic cold and icy front. Maria liked all of it. As Viola mentioned her way of showing her attraction though, she knew Viola only meant today. Normally Maria was all over Viola, no shame in her extremely 'clingy' behavior. And then... About being here for ten minutes and still not kissing Viola.
Immediately Maria scooted a little closer, though still not touching Viola quite yet. "I have a good way of showing it." Maria finally answered. "I just don't want to break you." She added, her voice much quieter this time. She'd already almost broken Viola's body once, with flames. And they were still healing. But.... If they wanted a kiss... Could she really deny them that? She scooted even closer, her hand raising once more and stopped just before touching their cheek once more. "Is that what you want, Viola? After I burned you?" She wanted Viola to say it before she touched them. Wanted them to be sure.

Maria moved closer to them, but still wasn’t touching them, and that was about enough to drive Viola mad. Was that how Maria felt, all the time, when they played hard to get? If it was, then Viola was seriously going to have to reconsider their strategy, because this was just unfair. All thoughts of physical contact flew out of Viola’s mind when Maria said that she didn’t want to break them. “Maria Camila da Silva Povoa, if you think that you are capable of breaking me, then you don’t know me at all.” She had to know that Viola was unbreakable. At least in the physical way – but that was what they were talking about. Viola had walked across half the school and climbed a flight of stairs while burned halfway to hell – Maria giving them one kiss was not going to break them. Maria asked if her kissing them was what they wanted, and Viola nodded firmly. “When will you understand, my Maria, that I will always want you?” Maybe they didn’t give themself up as a toy for Maria’s more physical releases, but Viola still wanted her in that sense, in every sense. They always did, and that was why they had told her they loved her, even though they hadn’t expected a return of the sentiment. They had thought that love was an accurate enough shorthand for those sentiments, but maybe Maria needed it all spelled out for her.

Maria couldn't stop herself from rolling her eyes when she heard her full name. Like most people hearing her full name was usually reserved for moments when Maria was in trouble. Or, in this case in need of severe scolding. After a moment though she softly smiled. "I'm capable of many things, Viola." She answered, though much less serious than Viola's own statement.
Viola's answer was all Maria needed to finally and delicately press the palm of her hand against Viola's cheek. "I understand that Viola." She whispered, pausing for only a moment before finishing her thought. "And I want you too." Physically, emotionally. It didn't matter how. Viola called her theirs, but they were just as much hers. Only then did she dare to finally finish closing that distance and softly pressing her lips against Viola's, carefully kissing her partner.
