Zita took in Jamie's dry tone as she spoke. It hit her then that Jamie was being really serious about the Captain's position. She really wanted her to seriously consider taking the position. Seriously consider taking the position if the way he kept insisting was taken into account. She would love to be captain! She really would. She loved Quidditch, she knew a ton about the game, she knew the other quidditch teams from playing them well enough to know what many of their strategies were. She had the ability to be great captain. She raised an eyebrow at her, previous amusement gone. "Seriously Jamie, do you really want me ot be captain that bad? Like if tomorrow you had to step down and you had the power to choose the next captain, without any stipulations, would your choice be me? And don't try to avoid the question," she asked in a serious tone, previous amusement withdrawn. "Are you worried about the fate of the team?" They still had months to discuss would would be captain and months before they would lose her as captain. Of course it was always good to plan for the future but Zita knew they still had time before they even needed to think about planning for next year. "Trust me. I know my strengths and weaknesses. I probably think about them on a weekly basis and none of my weaknesses would affect my abilities to be a great captain for GSA or our team with support." she spoke in a restrained tone, trying not to get annoyed. She knew why Jamie was saying the things that she was saying. She knew this. She still couldn't help the tick of annoyance that started in her brain at her words. She tried to dial it back with soft assurances and Zita closed her eyes a moment and sighed. "As I said, I will seriously consider being captain."

Jamie began to get the impression that she was annoying Zita with all of the talk about being captain, so she tried to backpedal, trying to think of something they could talk about that would involve Quidditch. It seemed it was too late to do that, though, because Zita was asking her a series of questions about why she wanted it so much. Zita said that she wasn’t allowed to avoid the question, which was exactly what Jamie would have tried to do if not given an explicit command. Jamie looked down at her hands, avoiding Zita’s gaze. “I don’t care if it’s you, specifically, but I want someone who cares about the team. And I don’t think that it’s good for someone to be Captain two years in a row, because it causes the team to focus only on what that Captain wants to focus on for two years in a row. Constantly changing leadership keeps people on their toes.” Jamie explained. Her voice grew more confident as she kept talking, but she still didn’t look at her teammate. “So, I think that the Captain should be a sixth year who cares about the team and is eligible for the position. And right now, you’re the only one who fits the description.” Jamie hated admitting that it wasn’t specifically about Zita, but about the criterion she was using and the fact that Zita was literally the only choice she saw. “And yeah, I’m worried about the fate of the team. I’m spending most of my seventh year trying to train the team and I’m probably not going to see much payoff, since the Tournament is taking the spotlight. So next year? It matters to me, and I’d hate to see all my work go to waste because someone didn’t care as much as I did.” Jamie felt a little strange admitting all of this as frankly as she was, but she hoped that the honesty would help Zita see why it was that Jamie was so insistent about everything.

Zita listened intently to Jamie's words, her giving her reasoning on why she thought she was the best and only choice for captain next year. It wasn't even because she thought Zita was the best choice. It seemed as if she'd gone through her head and created a list of things that this next captain could and could not have or be. It was disappointing really and she felt her annoyance rise in her just a little bit more, even though she tried to hide it. She knew Jamie was doing what she thought was best for the team with her list of requirements. "I understand what you're saying and what you're doing. Honestly, I do. But none of your work might now matter anyway. We could have an entirely new team next year. During tryouts, there may be some new fifth or sixth years who may try out and surprise us and beat out everyone on the team and become the new Hufflepuff quidditch team. I'm not saying that it will happen but it is completely possible," she began. "I think you're also under the assumption that if a current fifth years goes for captain and they are chosen for captain their seventh year as well, they won't care about the team as much nor will they be willing to take direction from their players. If they are a good enough captain to be chosen two years in a row, I would like to think they would know the strengths and weaknesses on the team and adjust accordingly. Not just focusing on one thing that they assume needs to be fixed or just focusing on what they think. Either way, if I can help it, I will be on the team next year regardless of if I am captain or not. You really don't think I would say something to this captain if they did those things you're saying? You don't have to be the leader or the captain to demonstrate leadership. And sometimes it is better to take a backseat and be support." The words poured out of her mouth. No one could ever accuse Zita of holding her tongue when she wanted to say something. She took a deep breath when she was finished speaking, brow furrowed. "As I said, I'll still put in my bid but I won't worry if I don't get it. I'll still be on the team and, as someone who does care about the team, I will still be there to look out for the team."

Apparently, opening up to Zita about her fears about next year had been the wrong choice, because immediately the other girl started berating her. Jamie tried not to flinch when Zita said that all of her work this year might not matter anyways. Generally, it was not polite to tell someone that something they were devoting a lot of time and energy to was worthless, but Jamie wasn’t about to be the one to point it out. Then Zita went on to say that all of her assumptions were wrong. Personally, Jamie thought that Zita was misrepresenting some of her assumptions a little bit. She wasn’t trying to say that a current fifth year would care about the team any less – just that Jamie personally believe that the position should go to someone with more experience, and someone who wouldn’t be banking on the fact that they would get another year in the position. No matter how hard everyone tried, there always was going to be a sense of complacency when they had the same leader two years in a row. Jamie wasn’t going to argue that, though. She wasn’t going to argue any of it, because it seemed like Zita was fed up with her, and trying to explain her thoughts more thoroughly was just going to end up with Jamie getting upset because the other girl wasn’t understanding her and Zita getting angry because Jamie was making assumptions that she thought were unfair. If she was honest, Jamie tuned about halfway through Zita’s rant. She didn’t want to get too emotionally invested in this conversation, because then things would end up going south anyways. When Zita was finally done talking, Jamie nodded as if she had heard every single word perfectly. “I’ll keep that in mind.” Jamie mumbled, before getting up and walking away unceremoniously, and without a goodbye. When she was a safe distance away, Jamie released a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. That hadn’t gone as well as she had hoped.

She watched as Jamie nodded, thinking that maybe her words had gotten through to her captain and she'd thought she'd gotten the fact across that, even if she wasn't captain, she would be around to make sure that the team was okay. To at least make sure that her fears were unwarranted and that the team would be okay. She thought that anyway until Jamie spoke, her words clipped and mumbled, before she got up and walked away. She didn't even say goodbye, and Zita thought that was rude. Jamie wasn't normally rude, so why had she done so now? She thought back over what she remembered herself saying just to see if she'd deserved the rudeness. She groaned then, loud and annoyed at herself. She had been an asshole, now that she thought about it. Or she had come off like one. She hadn't meant to, but she'd come off as rude. She sighed in frustration. Now she was going to have to apologize to her captain and see if she could get her point across another way. It wasn't that she hadn't meant what she had said, there had probably just been a better way for her to say it without pretty much alluding to the fact that she'd thought everything her captain had said was wrong and unnecessary. And saying that everything she had accomplished with the team was useless. She fell back on one of the couches with another groan. She hadn't thought before she spoke. She did that often enough that she shouldn't be surprised by it. She would tell her sorry a bit later; she probably didn't want to see her right now so soon after everything she'd said.
