Royal had been back at work for two weeks, but every time he walked into the Ministry, he felt a new pang. There was still a part of him that expected his father to come walking down the halls, even twenty months after he was dead. Even worse was the ghost of Abby that dogged him at every step. Every time the elevator stopped at the floor with the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, he wanted her to shove past him and go running down the hallway. Everything, everywhere, was one of them. He had thought that having Abby gone would distract him from the memories of his father, but if anything, Abby's death made his father's loss feel like a brand new injury. Royal was dealing, but he didn't want to live his life just dealing. He wanted to thrive, and he didn't know how to do that. Royal sighed a little. He needed to get his head back in the right place, but that was going to be a long slog. He shook his head a little, trying to clear the haze, and was just in time to realize that the elevator doors were closing - and he was already late. "Hold the elevator!" He called out, breaking into a run.

Logan was tired. He'd been working a lot of night shifts lately, but even after working last night they expected him to be here for some meeting or other. He didn't really know what the meeting was about; quite honestly, he was too tired to care. Still, he was here and that's what mattered. Here almost an hour early, but that was better than not showing up. Logan considered taking a short nap, but then decided he wouldn't be able to get back up, so he came straight back. He could find something to do for the next little while. Probably. If not, he'd just wander around for a bit until it was time for his meeting. He decided to first start his wanderings in the elevator. That was as good a place as any to run into people. He entered and was one of the last people inside when he heard a voice calling for the elevator. Without thinking, he extended a hand to hold the door and looked up, curious to see who it was. Royal Shacklebolt. Of course, Logan knew about what happened with his father and sister- didn't everyone? Well, maybe not everyone knew about his sister, but being a member of the Purifiers, Logan did. As the man drew nearer, Logan smiled cheerfully. This was why he was at the ministry after all, wasn't it? To pretend to make friends with them. "Hey Shacklebolt. How are you?" he asked with a greeting smile.

Royal was grateful that someone had decided to stop the elevator, as he had asked. It was already hard enough to get through a day without all those extra inconveniences piled on top of his grief. He stepped into the elevator, running a hand through his hair as he ducked in. “Thanks.” Royal said, not looking up until after his hair was slightly smoother and he wasn’t breathing as heavily from his short run. Oh. It was Logan Hartridge. “Hello, Hartridge.” He responded, using the other man’s surname because his own had been used. When asked how he was, Royal scratched the back of his neck. He only was allowed back at work because he had passed several evaluations that labelled him as psychologically stable and what not, so he wasn’t sure there was any answer that wouldn't contradict that and was also true. “I’m doing as well as the circumstances demand.” Royal answered after a pause. “And yourself?” He asked, because that was the polite, elevator-talk sort of conversation he needed to have to distract himself.

Logan merely nodded when Royal thanked him for holding the elevator. It wasn't particularly a grand favor. If he hadn't been the closest to the door, he was sure that someone else would have stepped forward and done the same thing. He was just being polite. He watched curiously as Royal scratched his neck and thought for a moment before answering his question. So he was struggling. Not that that was hard to understand. If anyone had dared to touch Emily and think they could get away with it ... well, Logan definitely would not be doing as well as the man beside him. He had a bit of a temper on him, though the people around him couldn't see it most of the time. They were too distracted by his cheerful manner and teasing. No one suspected the darkness inside. He shrugged when the question was returned to him. "Oh, about the usual. Double night shift followed by an early morning meeting. I think they have it out for me," he said with a good-natured smile. "Once I get out of here, I might just sleep all day." Oh, that was a tempting thought. Except Kat. He'd have to check on her first and make sure things were going well with her.

Royal winced a little when Logan mentioned a double night shift. One of the great things about being the Minister’s Junior Assistant was that Royal worked fairly regular hours. If there was a crisis, he was definitely going to be woken up so that he could deal with it, but nothing short of disaster (or his own stubbornness) would keep him in the office longer than a regular work day. Royal had to admit that he was woefully underinformed when it came to any disasters that might have happened when he was gone. He was a little worried that information was being kept from him because of fear that he would do something rash like go chase after Elaine alone. Royal wasn’t like that, though, and he wanted to get back in the loop. He wanted to do his job, because that was about the only thing that he had left. Logan said that he might just sleep all day, and Royal laughed. “My favorite thing is when you get back after a long day and you can’t manage to fall asleep.” Royal’s brain was of the busiest kind, and even if he was physically exhausted, sometimes that was hard to shut off.

At Royal's laugh and comment, Logan turned to look at his, his eyes narrowing skeptically even as a small smile crossed his face. He couldn't be entirely sure, but he thought the man was joking. At least, if he wasn't Logan was going to have to label him as mad. No one actually wanted to work so much that they missed sleeping at normal hours and then found themselves unable to sleep when the chance came to them. "I don't believe you. I can't really think of something I'd rather do less right now than try to sleep and be unable to." Really though, Logan just wanted to sleep. However, his tiredness was waning a little now that he was actually talking with someone. A good thing, that. "So what do you have on today's agenda, since I'm assuming your plan isn't the same as mine," he asked with a smile. If talking was helping him wake up, he was definitely going to continue to do it.

Royal gave Logan a small smile when the other man said that there was nothing he’d rather do less than try to fall asleep and be unable to. Sadly, that was a reality that Royal was facing more and more frequently. Immediately after Abby’s death, it had been too easy to fall asleep – he slept for longer than he ever had, partially because he was physically exhausted (since he spent his days taking care of his mother and sister in addition to watching after his own affairs) but also because it was easier to be asleep than awake. Now that he had gotten over the initial hump, though, Royal found that he was now reaching the phase in grieving where he devised a hundred million scenarios where he saved his sister. Logan asked what he had on the day’s agenda, and Royal shrugged his shoulders. “Honestly, I’m just getting caught up on everything that I missed.” Royal said. He didn’t need to say why he had missed so much work. Everyone knew. Admitting that he was gone wasn’t a shock. Royal was hoping that soon he’d be done getting caught up, though, so that he could actually help move the Ministry towards finding his sister’s killer.

Logan grimaced at Royal's response to his question. That was no good! Even in his sleep deprived state, he knew what the other man was likely going through, since yet another member of his family was gone. Logan couldn't imagine what he'd do in that kind of a situation. If anyone ever dared to touch his sister ... well, they would regret it to say the least. The fact that Royal was out and about and trying to catch up on his work was commendable. "That doesn't sound like a fun day," he commented, not really expecting to get any real kind of a response out of it. "Do you have any meetings or anything or is it all just catch-up?" Logan was trying to find a way to maybe lighten the mood, but he wasn't sure if that was possible. Either way, polite conversation couldn't go amiss, could it?

Royal just shook his head when Logan said that his day didn’t sound like fun. It was strange, how he could be catching up for two weeks and still not be all the way done. It probably had something to do with the fact that things had happened in the two weeks since he had started catching up, which meant he needed to catch up on that, too, and… It was a lot. “I have some meetings. I’d have to check my calendar to know what they were, though.” He said. The Minister was busy, as always, but Royal wasn’t expected to attend every meeting she did for several reasons, the foremost of which being that she knew he was still working on his grand catch up scheme. “It’s been nice to be busy, though.” If he had been left alone with his own thoughts for much longer, Royal probably would have ripped his hair out. As it was, he was still worried about his mother and sister, but things were better now that he wasn’t in the same catatonic state as they were.

Logan nodded as Royal explained that he did have some meetings, but that he wasn't sure what they were for. That made sense. Logan had to go to meetings for unknown reasons all the time. Granted, that was generally because he either did not read the memos or forgot what they said right after he read them, but that was beside the point. Royal probably was better at that sort of thing. He smiled, "Yeah, being busy can be nice," he commented. Mostly being busy was good when things were hard. Other than that Logan preferred taking things easy because he didn't like to rush around all the time. "Well if you need to take a breather, feel welcome to come and find me," he offered. Royal probably wouldn't want to, but part of Logan's job with the Purifiers was to stay on people's good sides and learn things so ... making new friends was always a good plan.

Royal couldn’t agree more when Logan agreed that busy was nice. Taking a break was nice too, sometimes, but everything in moderation, Royal supposed. Logan said that if he ever needed to take a break, Royal was welcome to come and find him, and the younger man smiled. “I’ll keep that in mind.” Royal said. It was always good to have an excuse to get out of the Minister’s office every once in a while, and people to find when the stress got to be a little too much. Royal was searching for a new topic of conversation, but just then, the elevator dinged, and announced his floor. “This is me.” Royal said with a smile. He stepped out of the elevator and gave Logan an awkward half-salute. “I’ll see you later, maybe.” Royal said, unsure whether or not he’d be able to take Logan up on his offer anytime soon but not wanting it to be out of the question completely. Royal turned around and began walking towards his office, prepared for another busy day.
