Kinsey said that her logic made sense, and Xan loosened a little. She didn’t want to keep on the subject, anyways, not when there was so much else to talk about. Kinsey seemed adamant that her offer about being friends was indeed still on the table, and furthermore, that she would like to be Xan’s friend. At the comment about having to ask getting-to-know-you questions, the Ravenclaw’s nose wrinkled. “We could just skip those, if it’s all the same to you.” Xan said with a laugh. “How about this? I’ll tell you all the important things about me, and you can tell me all the important things about you, and then we won’t have to ask any awkward questions.” Xan hated the idea of having to limp through a conversation like that, because it sounded exactly like the kind of conversation that would destroy a friendship instead of create one. “My name is Xanthippe Hermione Meagle. My godmother is the Minister of Magic. I’m a triplet, and my two siblings, Winnie and Zac, are in Gryffindor. I have a boyfriend, Hugo Weasley, and I want to be a painter when I grow up.” Xan paused. That seemed to be just about everything that an acquaintance would need to know about her to become a friend, so she stopped there. Maybe the information would spawn a more organic line of questioning.

Kinsey wasn't sure what made the difference, but Xan seemed to relax a little bit and she was glad. Being constantly stressed was not a healthy thing, or a fun one, and she didn't wish it on anyone. If anything that she said seemed to help, then she'd be glad. Kinsey smiled and nodded when Xan said she'd like to skip the get-to-know-you questions. Then she suggested that they should just tell important things about themselves. Kinsey hated doing that since the most important thing about herself was a secret, but she nodded cheerfully and listened to Xan's explanation. "Sounds good to me." Kinsey listened closely, noting what Xan said so she could imitate her. "A painter? That sounds like fun," Kinsey commented before touching her chin in thought. "uhhh, let's see ... I'm Kinsey Bainbridge. I have two older sisters that are twins in the year above me and a set of triplets a year younger ... but I don't have any twins or triplets or anything." was that interesting at all? She took a breath. "I do not have a boyfriend, and I don't know what I want to be when I graduate," she admitted, shrugging as she waited to see if Xan had any questions for her.

Xan smiled at Kinsey’s comment about her becoming a painter. “I think so, too.” Which was kind of why she was doing it and everything. Xan was beginning to think more about the practical side of things – how she would be able to be paid as an artist so that she could have food and a roof over her head and all those other nice things – when it came to being a painter, but that hadn’t stopped her from wanting to pursue her passion. Being comfortable in her relationship with her family and her romantic partner made thinking about her career much easier, since she wasn’t always questioning whether or not something would go wrong and she’d have to strike out on her own. Xan knew someone would always be there to catch her. Some may have thought her lack of independence was embarrassing, but Xan thought that her ability to depend on others was one of her best traits. Xan’s eyes widened a little when Kinsey said that she had siblings that were both twins and triplets, but she didn’t have either for herself. “Must be rough, to be a singleton around all of that madness.” Xan said sympathetically. She knew that sometimes she felt left out from Winnie and Zac’s relationship since she wasn’t in Gryffindor, but at least they were still her triplets. Kinsey didn’t have that. “It’s fine not to have either.” Xan assured Kinsey. “Relationships should come naturally, and I think a career will become easier once we’re in seventh year.” They would be closer to graduation then, which would make discovering what they wanted to do more urgent, and maybe easier.

Kinsey nodded, appreciating the fact that her friend already knew what she wanted to do with her life. Jobs were, of course, something that Kinsey had thought about before, but she still didn't know what she wanted to do with hers. At least she didn't need to know right away. She had another year to try and figure things out, which she would definitely be talking advantage of. "I'm glad you've got it figured out," she commented. "That must take away at least some of the stress of being a seventh year." Stress that Kinsey was sure she would become familiar with the next year.
Kinsey shrugged when Xan commented about her family situation being rough. "Yeah, she responded slowly. "I mean, my brother is a singleton as well, but he's the oldest and so he's not always around. But ... it is a little hard finding someone to talk to that can really understand, if that makes any sense." She paused a moment. "Not that I'm complaining! I love my family, we just don't always get along so well."
Kinsey nodded again at Xan's comment about it being fine not to have either. "Yeah I know ... I'm just not exactly the most patient person so waiting for them to come naturally is kind of a struggle for me." Then she grinned. "I am super excited to be a seventh year, even though I don't really have a reason. Still, we'll make it fun." She didn't know what she wanted to do with her life yet, but Kinsey was positive that seventh year was going to be a blast. She was starting to come out of her shell and get to know people better and give them a chance to get to know her, so really how bad could it be?

Xan attempted a smile when Kinsey said that she had it all figured out, and that it would take away the stress of being a seventh year. She had been doing a pretty good job of not worrying about whether or not she was going to be advancing a year come May. She had been out of class for a long while, and even though she didn’t really need N.E.W.T.s to be an artist, Xan wanted to graduate from Hogwarts like her siblings and her parents and her boyfriend would. Even if it was possible she was going to be graduating a year behind everyone her age. But Kinsey didn’t need to know about that kind of stress.
“If it makes you feel any better, sometimes not even having a triplet can make you feel like there’s someone who understands.” Xan said. When Winnie and Zac had been sorted into Gryffindor, it was the first time Xan had felt like she was fundamentally different from her siblings, and a lot of things along their school career had helped solidify that. Her siblings didn’t understand what it was like to be in love with a clairvoyant who had seen her die, and they didn’t understand what it was like to have to look death in the face, and accept that it might come sooner than they expected. They had watched her deal with those things, but the reality was so much stranger when you were the one living it.
Kinsey admitted that she wasn’t the most patient person, which Xan… wasn’t sure she understood. Xan wasn’t particularly patient, but nor was she impatient. She was able to wait if it made someone else happy to do so, but there were some things, like getting better, that felt like they would never come fast enough. “Anything can be fun if you try hard enough.” Xan agreed, though once again she was apprehensive to agree to anything that involved ‘we’ and ‘seventh year’ in the same thought, since she wasn’t sure that she would be part of the we.

Xan's comment was ... definitely confusing to Kinsey. If you didn't have a triplet, what would make you feel like there was someone who would understand? "How so?" she asked, hoping that Xan would understand the question because she really didn't know another way to phrase it. Being the only female daughter without a twin or triplet, Kinsey often felt like the odd man out, but that wasn't really what she wanted. Sometimes she tried to connect with her sisters, but most of the time it didn't feel like it worked. She got along with the younger ones alright ... when she saw them. Her older sisters? Well, things with them definitely weren't on the most positive of notes as a general rule.
Xan seemed to agree with her excitement about next year, though something seemed a little off. Still, since this was the first time she and Xan really talked and became friends, Kinsey didn't really want to start trying to delve into her psyche. Nor did she think the Ravenclaw girl would like it. Most people liked their intentions and thoughts left alone. Knowing one's intentions made figuring out their thoughts possible sometimes, but most of the time Kinsey didn't even try. She didn't ask for this gift; she didn't want to invade people's privacy. Kinsey nodded at her statement. "Definitely. And I, for one, intend to have fun next year." She gave a small laugh. "As well as this year, I suppose. It's not over yet, is it?" Kinsey laughed. Really, she needed to get better at enjoying the moment instead of always wishing for the future.

Xan shrugged when Kinsey asked how having a triplet still didn't guarantee understanding. "Well, we're still different people. We like different things and have different ways of looking at the world." She explained. Xan didn't think that Kinsey automatically assumed that multiples were exact copies of each other, since she could probably see that wasn't true when it came to her sisters, but sometimes the reminder was necessary. "And if your worldview and your triplet's don't match up, then it makes it difficult for them to understand, even if everything else is the same." Fundamental differences in looking at the world were the reasons people didn't understand each other in the first place. "So just like not being a triplet doesn't guarantee that someone won't understand you, having a triplet doesn't mean that someone will." Xan thought that maybe she was using too many words to express a simple sentiment: Kinsey could still find someone who understood her, and so could Xan, but neither of them had a guarantee based on the number of other people that they had been born with.
Kinsey said she intended to have fun next year, and for the rest of this year, and Xan smiled. "I think that we should always be trying to have fun." Xan said brightly. Even when the situation wasn't what they expected it to be, they could still make the best of it.

Kinsey understood what Xan said, about how they were their own people with their own thoughts and opinions, but that wasn't quite what she was talking about. From what she saw with her sisters, even if they disagreed on certain things, they were always there for one another. Then again, Kinsey didn't see all their interactions with one another, so she couldn't really know that for certain, she just assumed based off of what she did see. Her sisters seemed to get along with one another quite well. Even so, she wasn't going to argue the point with Xan. The only thing that would accomplish would be to frustrate both of them. So she nodded, "That makes sense," she answered slowly.
Xan said they should always be trying to have fun and Kinsey nodded. "I agree. What do you like to do for fun?" She asked curiously. Sure, she knew who Xan was before this, but the two hadn't really spoken with one another before. At least, not a lot. She liked it.

Xan gave Kinsey a relieved grin when the other girl moved on from the subject of family. Xan didn’t want to get too preachy, but she knew she could definitely get up on a soapbox when it came to her siblings. Kinsey asked what she liked to do for fun, and Xan’s grinned widened. “I paint a lot.” She said, thought that was probably obvious since she had told Kinsey she wanted to be a painter when she graduated. “I used to do a lot of gymnastics, but that hasn’t really been my main priority lately.” During her sickness it had been hard to jump around, and now that she was better, Xan was spending as much time with her friends as she could. Since most of them weren’t into gymnastics, it had kind of fallen to the wayside. “What about you?” Xan asked, curious as to what the other girl did in spare time. A lot of Ravenclaws seemed to enjoy reading and books, but Xan hoped there was something more than that to talk about, since reading and books was the obvious answer.

Kinsey smiled and nodded when Xan started to explain that she liked to paint. "Do you like to paint specific things in particular, like landscapes or portraits, or just whatever comes to mind?" She asked curiously. When Xan said that she liked gymnastics as well, but didn't get to do it much lately, Kinsey nodded sympathetically. "Maybe you'll be able to get into it again after things get back to normal a bit," Kinsey suggested. She knew that losing time to do hobbies was sad, but that when you wanted you could make time for them again. Xan started to ask when Kinsey liked to do and she smiled. "I like Quidditch ... and cooking," her smile widened, "especially if I'm cooking desserts. They're my specialty." Which was mostly because Kinsey just wanted to eat them, so she cooked what she felt like eating.

Xan shrugged when Kinsey asked what she liked to paint. “I’ve always preferred portraits, but I’ve been getting better at landscapes lately. I painted a landscape for my godmother recently and she seemed to really enjoy it, so I think it’s really more a matter of preference than skill.” Xan shrugged. She liked gifting people art, mostly because they were so genuinely happy to receive it, and it was nice to give the people she cared about a small piece of herself in the form of an art piece. “I painted a lot of landscapes when I was in the hospital wing.” Xan admitted. She hadn’t had many human subjects to sit for portraits, so in the end it was just easier to paint what she could see out the window. Xan wasn’t sure if she’d be able to get back into gymnastics again, if not because of actual physical limitations then because of her own worry about getting sick again. Being overly warm, like she was after practicing for a long time, wouldn't help dim those fears. “What’s the difference between cooking and baking?” Xan asked, humming softly to herself as she did so. She had heard of baking desserts, but never cooking them, and she was curious if the difference was just in the semantics.

Xan started to explain what she liked to paint and Kinsey nodded, "Well it's cool that you can do both, even having a preference," she commented. Personally, she preferred landscapes, but that was mostly because she loved water scenes or really anything that had to do with water in general. Kinsey tried to not let her expression look pitying when Xan explained that she did a lot with landscapes during her sickness. If she were sick, Kinsey didn't know what she would have done. She probably wouldn't handle things as well as it seemed Xan did, but then again maybe that was all just the face she showed the world. At her question Kinsey shrugged, "I've never really thought of the difference before, but if I had to make a guess I would say baking is anything you need to bake in an oven and cooking encompasses everything else." Kinsey shrugged again, mostly to emphasize that she wasn't entirely sure.

Xan smiled when the over Ravenclaw said that it was cool that the artist could do both landscapes and portraits. “I like having a little bit of variety.” She explained. Painting people over and over could get boring, even if they were different people, just like painting landscapes over and over could get boring, even if they were different landscapes. Xan liked to be able to alternate between both, and also switch mediums – there was always a new challenge to be had that way. Of course she was still learning, but with as much practice as she got doing art, Xan thought that most of her pieces, even the challenging ones, were at least passable.
Kinsey explained the difference between cooking and baking, even though she said she wasn’t really sure, but Xan was only half-listening, the cogs in her brain whirring. “I have a brilliant idea.” Xan announced after Kinsey was done talking. “At graduation this year, you bake a cake and I decorate it, and we give it to the graduating students as a parting gift.” That would use both of their unique talents for a good cause, and would give the girls something to do together while they got to know each other better.

Kinsey nodded when Xan explained that she liked variety. "I think most people do. When we're expected to do the same thing over and over most people tend to get bored." She laughed as another thought crossed her mind. "Which could explain why most people don't like doing their homework." Kinsey wasn't one of those people, but that argument definitely made sense to her. "So do you give away most of your paintings or keep them?" Kinsey asked curiously. She didn't really know many artists that well, so she couldn't help but be a bit curious about it.
Xan introduced her idea and Kinsey was nodding enthusiastically before she even finished speaking. "I love that idea!" Kinsey agreed instantly. "Do we want to do it the day of graduation or the day before?" she asked, already thinking about the logistics of the idea. Making a cake would be fun ... but she also wanted to practice a bit so she could make sure it didn't taste bad. That would be embarrassing.

Xan shrugged when Kinsey said that repetition was part of the reason people didn’t like doing their homework. As far as she was concerned, homework wasn’t repetitive – the only way it seemed that way would be if someone wasn’t devoting their attention to the actual material, but to the process of reading or writing. If people just focused on what was interesting about what they were learning, they would do a lot better at not getting bored with their homework. Kinsey asked if Xan mostly gave away her paintings or kept them, and Xan made a ‘so-so’ motion with her hand. “I like to give some away, but there are some pieces that no one else would really want. They’re only really ‘good’ because of their sentimental value.” Xan wasn’t into the idea of a painting be good or bad, since that thing was so subjective, but she hoped Kinsey understood the bottom line – Xan would give away all her paintings if she could, but there were some that just couldn’t.
“Probably the day before graduation. That way if we make a mistake or something we have time to start over.” Kinsey probably wouldn’t mess up with baking the cake, but Xan wanted the decorations to be perfect, and she wanted the opportunity to have a do-over if she wasn’t totally happy with the result.
