@kinsey “Flying definitely counts,” Lance nodded his head. “I’m not all that great at it though. Prefer to keep myself grounded most of the time.” He had tried out once for the Hufflepuff team. It ended poorly. The idea had been to join the team, which wasn’t all that competitive to get onto, and then use that as his club for the remainder of his Hogwarts years. Since he didn’t make the cut, now he was left wandering around without much else to do. That was two years ago. “Well, no clubs for me. But I enjoy going to the music store every weekend and listening to records all day,” he scrunched his face up, realizing that made him sound lonely. “It’s nice to escape it all and kick back without a care in the world. Too bad getting a music device to work in the school is almost impossible.” The attempts he had made to charm iPods and record players never turned out how he had intended. Cameras and other kinds of electronic equipment worked, but not mp3 players. “Aside from that, I enjoy a good baseball game.” Lance trailed off. One day he’d make it back home and catch a game. “That’s a no-maj, err, muggle sport in America. Usually gets me weird looks when I bring it up.”
Lance listened intently as Kinsey detailed all the different kinds of Ravenclaws. This was pretty much the first time he had ever heard any of this. There were the classical book smart kinds, and then the ones that wanted to learn other things; topics that weren’t necessarily taught in school. He kind of wished that he had a drive like that. Classes were easy and enough effort was put into schoolwork, but it wasn’t like he was hungry to learn more. “So where do you fall in all of that?” he asked. Lance figured it was a valid question since they were on the topic.
He returned her smile as she said she would look for chances. That was certainly better than giving up for good. “Obviously if it’s done, it’s done,” he added, figuring that it was worth amending. “But if you think there’s a possibility left, it’s better to give it a shot than not to.” Sometimes he wondered if following the advice he gave other people would benefit himself as well. He knew that eventually he would have to make amends with Barb; she was still his mother after all, and she was alive. Despite their differences as of late, that was better than her being dead like he had thought. Anything was better than being dead. “No problem. I’ve had to do that to people quite a bit lately, so I know what it’s like to let it all bubble over.”
“Wandered the grounds,” Lance laughed. “It was a little weird bein’ in South Carolina one second, and here the next.” That was a story he didn’t want to get into right now, especially after just meeting Kinsey. She had already unloaded her family issues on him, and while he had somewhat done the same back, explaining everything that had happened in the last six months was difficult to do at times. That and they had just gotten off the family topic. Going back now would ensure talking about it at length again. Lance contemplated her next question. Was he done walking? “I don’t actually know. It is nice out today. Be a shame if I ruined it by going back inside.”

Kinsey nodded when Lance said that he wasn't too good at flying. "I think I'm alright. I might be able to make the team next year ... but who knows?" Really though it depended on who was made captain. Some of them were really picky and wanted the best of the best and some of them were just looking for steady players. Kinsey thought she could be a steady player ... possibly. She'd never know until she got the chance though. She nodded when he said he wasn't in any clubs. "Me neither. I haven't found any that I'm really interested in, you know?" Obviously he did, if he wasn't in any clubs, but that just kind of slipped out. Hopefully he wouldn't think she was a complete idiot. She nodded when he mentioned going to the movie store so he could listen to music. "You know you can go to the room of requirement?" She asked. "A record player works in there ... it could probably provide any music you want as well." He probably already knew about that and Kinsey felt a little silly for telling him, but oh well. Her head cocked to the side when he mentioned baseball. "I think I've heard of baseball, but never really learned a lot about it," she told him after a few seconds. "Why do you like it so much?"
Kinsey shrugged when he asked where she fell. "In the middle?" She made the comment a question. "I like learning, no matter what it is, but I prefer practical magic. I don't study relentlessly, but I get good marks. My sister thinks I'm a slacker because I don't study as much as she does, but I don't care." She didn't really know how else to explain her learning habits. Kinsey nodded when he agreed that it would be a good idea for her to try. Perhaps he was right. Also, if she tried and her sisters rejected her yet again it would just be more evidence of what she already knew. She just wouldn't get her hopes up that things would change. That would be foolish. She smiled and nodded when he said he'd done his fair share of letting his emotions out on people as well. "I'm glad I'm not the only one then," Kinsey answered. She smiled when he answered her question by saying that he wandered the grounds. Obviously. "I can only imagine," she said softly. She couldn't imagine being taken away from Hogwarts mid-year. If her family had to come too, like Lance, it probably wouldn't be much of a help either. She'd prefer to go on her own. Kinsey shrugged and stood up when he said he wasn't sure if he was done walking. "Well I can join you if you want." She didn't have to walk with him, but she was enjoying the conversation, so why not? lancelot ray linley

@kinsey Being ‘just alright’ and making her house team were two distinct things that shouldn’t have been mentioned in the same sentence. One couldn’t exist at the same time as the other. Making the house team was a big deal. Only the best Quidditch players could manage that. That was why there were scouts always at matches; they were trying to find out who would work best at the professional level. Like no-maj sports though, not everyone played for the competitive high or to go pro. Lance had a feeling that Kinsey was more of the relaxed player, unlike some of the crazy Gryffindor team members. They were always a wild bunch to watch. “Good luck. Being an athlete is no small feat,” he commented. As for finding the right kind of club, Lance couldn’t agree more. He found himself almost nodding immediately. “I feel like there’s something missing. Like a club I would join if it existed. I just don’t know what it is yet.” He had no qualms about starting one if he was allowed to. Kinsey’s idea about using the room of requirement for listening to music absolutely floored him. How had he never thought of that before? Lance knew that some people couldn’t get into the room on their own, but he had never had that kind of difficulty ever before. He always wanted to listen to music during Hogsmeade trips, so that happened to be where he went. There was no reason to be passing by the room’s location being a Hufflepuff either. Wandering around the upstairs corridors wasn’t exactly his thing. “No kidding? Guess I’ve been missing out all these years…” That was an understatement. If he had known about that function, he would have spent the majority of his time in there. Endless amounts of records and music sounded wonderful. Snapping out of his delightful stupor upon Kinsey’s question about baseball, Lance had to ponder the question for a moment. “I think because it’s America’s pastime. It’s also really mindless watching both in person and on television. So it’s easy to sit back and relax and watch your team play.” His first order of business upon getting an apartment after graduating was to get a tv and sports package. He needed to be able to watch baseball again. The only other option was to go back to the states, and couldn’t leave Georgie at Hogwarts on her own. At least it sounded like she was one of the Ravenclaws with her head on straight. He had already voiced the more popular opinions on the house. Practicality over intense research made sense to him. There was something really taxing about staring at a book all day and trying to learn material. If it didn’t stick the first few times, it never would. That was just ow it worked. “It happens to the best of us,” Lance responded to her comment on not being the only one with family issues. He nodded his head some more as she said she couldn’t imagine the change from one country to another. There were other Americans at Hogwarts now, but it hadn’t always been like that. For the longest time, it was just him and Georgie. They were different from the others though. They grew up and went to school with the other Hogwarts students. They hadn’t been ripped away from their friends back home like some had. Everyone was a different case. At her offer to join him on the rest of his walk, Lance stood up. “ Let’s stop talking about it then,” he smiled as he turned to continue on. [THE END]
