It was hard to hear Madam Macmillan tell her that she couldn't change the past and her parents. She was clearly trying to be polite about it, but she didn't think highly of either of them - her mother in particular - and even though Eliza had precious few positive feelings towards either of them, it was still hard to accept that she couldn't have done anything differently. She'd tried so hard to, for so long. But if anything, it was harder to hear Madam Macmillan praise her. To be told she was clever and strong. She knew she was twisting her hands in her robes again, but she didn't flich or cringe away from it. "Thank you," she murmured, and tried to make herself believe the words. But the mention of pseudonyms had her shaking her head almost immediately. "I'll use my real name. It's got credibility, even with what happened. It's easier, and I don't mind, really." Everything with her family was a broken mess, yes, but she would not be the Elizabeth Iris Flint she was today if it weren't for going through it. She wouldn't be as close to her sister; she wouldn't have this new family; she wouldn't be brave enough to move out of the Manor and have a real career. She would be stuck as a trophy wife, and by Circe she'd have gone insane. No, much better to be herself, and she could even say it with a degree of strength behind it. Parvati hadn’t intended to make Elizabeth feel uncomfortable in any way because of her compliment, but it was the truth. The girl was far more capable than she realized, and, even if that sunk into her mind in the least little bit, it might help to increase her self-esteem. “Thank you.”
Given how meek she seemed in response to being complimented, the conviction with which Elizabeth told her that she was comfortable with using her real name over a pen name was enough that Parvati would have believed that someone had slipped Elizabeth some sort of potion, were they not alone and had she not been looking at the Slytherin the entire time. “I'll use my real name,” said after Elizabeth shaking her head. “It's got credibility, even with what happened.” That was true. The Flints were one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight, for what the Pure-Blood Directory was worth nearly a century after its creation. “It's easier,” she continued. There was also that; she wouldn’t have to come up with a new name that would remain attached to her work for the rest of her career. “And I don't mind, really.” That was most important.
“It's who I am.”
It was who she was, barring her parents’ abuse, the fact that Ernie was her biological father. It was her identity, and Parvati was proud—for her sake—that she didn’t want to change it. The option was available to her, but she hadn’t taken it.
“See?” Parvati encouraged her. “That’s what I meant.” She saw so many students—students who were about to leave Hogwarts and enter the working world—who didn’t have the faintest idea what it was that they could do or wanted to do with their lives. Elizabeth, it was clear, knew not only what she wanted to do, but she had started doing it, stuck with it, and had a true passion for it. She also knew who she was—as a person and as a writer—which would only serve her well.
“Most of my contacts at the Prophet should still work there,” Parvati considered. It hadn’t been very long—in the grand scheme of things—since she’d left Witch Weekly, and the newspaper had never had that much turnover. “And it wouldn’t hurt them to have some younger voices…”

Apparently it was her conviction, her hard-won sense of what she wanted to do with her life that reflected her strength and cleverness in Madam Macmillan’s eyes. She wouldn’t have described it that way, but she’d fought for it enough already, for the ground beneath her feet, that being complimented on that - this time her smile was genuine. Still small, still with a ducked head to conceal and protect herself, but it was real and heartfelt and not just because it was the thing she was supposed to do. And Madam Macmillan started musing about her contacts at the Prophet and Eliza’s smile grew. It was far more than she had hoped for coming to Madam Macmillan’s office, and she’d bared some of her soul and not come out wanting. All that she needed to do was ask for what she wanted, so she did. ”Would you pass my name along then? I have a portfolio available.” Eliza would take every opportunity she had to get her foot in the door, every good word in she could get, but she needed to have earned her spot just as much as she needed the spot itself. parvati patil macmillan

When Eliza asked if she would be willing to pass her name along, Parvati’s only thought was that she would be a fool not to. She seemed to have gotten a great deal out of working on the staff of the school newspaper, so it wouldn’t be too difficult—Parvati didn’t think—for her to get used to the demands of the Daily Prophet. The girl was clearly dedicated to journalism, and Parvati knew that she had the potential to do well for herself if she got an internship. Even more, she had added that she had a portfolio available, which would help to make that dedication to her work crystal clear.
“Of course I’ll pass your name along,” Parvati assured Eliza. “I’ll be sure to mention your portfolio, unless you’d rather bring that to me.” She was more than happy to assist Eliza, and it wouldn’t be a laborious task to come up with glowing things to say about her work ethic. “I can tell you got Sorted into Slytherin on account of your ambition,” she laughed. It was something that she had to pry out of some of her Gryffindors, though she supposed that some of the ambitions in Slytherin House could become rather lofty, too.
Eliza, though, had a good head on her shoulders, and Parvati was relieved to see how little she had been swayed by everything that had happened to her over the course of the year. “If there’s anything else you need,” she added, “help with writing a CV, or anything… Anything at all, just ask.”

Madam Macmillan said that she would absolutely pass her name along, and she offered to mention her portfolio, or even bring it herself. It was a good thought, but it would have to stop being a tome of a portfolio for that to be any good. “I’ve always thought ambition was my most Slytherin quality,” she agreed with a smile that almost reached her eyes. ”I'm putting together some portfolio highlights. I’ll pass it along once I’ve got it sorted,” Eliza promised. “Thank you for your support, Madam Macmillan. I do think I mostly have it under control, but I won't hesitate to ask if I need to.” She really did appreciate having someone - an adult - who knew what she wanted and believed she could do it, and had the connections to help her make it happen. But it wouldn’t sink in right away, and she half-expected the realization to bring tears, and she would not do that here. ”If you don’t mind, I’ve an assignment I’d like to finish up?”parvati patil macmillan

Elizabeth made a comment about how she had always thought ambition to be her most Slytherin quality, which, from what Parvati knew of her, she wasn’t about to deny. She added that she had a portfolio of highlights that she was putting together and that she would pass it along to her once she had finished it. That sounded fine by Parvati, who nodded.
“Thank you for your support, Madam Macmillan,” Eliza told her, which Parvati could tell was genuine. ”I do think I mostly have it under control, but I won't hesitate to ask if I need to.” Eliza didn’t strike her as the kind of student who would say that simply for the sake of saying it, either. There were students who hesitated to ask for help; that was far from uncommon. “If you don’t mind,” she went on, “I’ve an assignment I’d like to finish up?”
Parvati smiled and tilted her head slightly in dismissal. “Not a problem. I won’t keep you from it,” she assured Eliza. “Have a good night.”
