She asked why he was alright with muggles when his parents weren't and he shrugged. "I guess I still see them as people regardless of their magical abilities." he admitted. "They didn't choose to me muggles like we didn't have any choice in becoming wizards. Why should that determine their worth?" he asked, not expecting her to answer, just explaining his thought process. However, if he ever dared to tell his parents that they likely wouldn't understand. Riley hated telling her what he had observed. He knew that she didn't want anyone to know these things and that was obviously why she was out here on her own. She was a lovely, pretty girl and he hated to see her cry like this. He kind of wanted to touch her, to pat her back or something but he didn't want to push her boundaries. While they had known each other for 6 years, they didn't really know each other. "Is that why your our here?" he asked. He understood if she wanted him to leave. A loud burst of thunder roared down from the sky, and rain promised, but hadn't yet begun. "Did someone hurt you?" he wasn't sure if she would tell him. "I can pretend I never said anything, that I don't know. We can sing Frozen songs." he insisted, watching her ball up and feeling almost heart-broken.

He explained his thoughts and Kinsey found herself nodding. To her, this explained why he was in Ravenclaw. Instead of going along with his parents' point of view, he thought it through logically and came up with his own opinion. "I wish more people saw it that way," she said softly. Her father was a muggle and her mother loved him even though she was a witch. From that moment on, she'd been looked down on from certain people and Kinsey agreed with Riley. It wasn't right to judge people on that. She didn't know what she expected when she said nothing to his observation, but then he started asking questions. She knew he was sincere in his concern, that he was suddenly worried for her and she wished she could take that away from him, but she couldn't. She stared at him, searching his eyes as she decided if she wanted to answer his questions or not. Slowly she nodded, "It is," she said in a whisper. She jumped at the thunder, but couldn't pull her eyes away from his. She bit her lip at his next question to try and keep it from trembling. No doubt he would notice that. "N-n-not physically." At least, not physically yet. She always felt nervous that someday it would turn that way, but so far it hadn't. He seemed to want to backtrack now, saying he could pretend that he didn't know and that they could sing. She smiled for a split second then sobered and asked, "How long have you known?" She couldn't help it. This might be another question she didn't want the answer to, but she just had to ask.

"Yeah, so do I." he agreed. It was rather hard on him to seemingly be the only one in his family to see that, though, even he knew that he had a little but of them built into him that had been pounded into them since they were babies, every now and then he found himself thinking a thought that seemed innocent enough until he realized that he was sounding exactly like his father. Luckily very fairly did any of those thoughts make it into words because surely they would be interpreted in the wrong way or in a more extreme way. She confirmed the reason that she was outside this late and he was really glad that he had stumbled upon her. He couldn't imagine not knowing her, not being here with her now. He knew how vulnerable she was feeling and he didn't want to think what would have happened if someone else had happened upon her, maybe the person who was treating her badly. She stuttered but told him that she wasn't being physically hurt. He was glad for that, but he knew that emotional damage was just as bad. "I'm sorry." he admitted softly. "Who is it? Is there something I can do?" he asked, genuinely wanting to help, to protect her if he could, or, even to just be a friend and to be there for her. How long have you known? she asked. He kept eye contact with her feeling like she might need it since she hadn't broke it yet. "Um, well I knew something was wrong when I saw you sitting here... because of your eyes and your nose." he admitted, both were very red and showed obvious signs of crying. "And when you flinched when I touched you I understood why, i was waiting to see if you would bring anything up." he admitted.

"My father is a muggle," she said softly, not really knowing why she was telling him. Maybe it was because he was telling her his own private things. "He's amazing, even without magic. I don't understand why they hate him and everyone like him," Kinsey confessed. Didn't it matter more who someone was than what they could do? Apparently not to everyone. He apologized and Kinsey nodded, hugging her knees even more tightly now. Then he started asking who and if he could help and her eyes widened. "No," she said instantly as tears started to fall, much like they had before he sat down beside her. "I c-can't tell you and you c-c-can't st-stop it," she stammered through the tears. Kinsey released her grip on her legs then and turned to face him, reaching forward. Riley was nice. She didn't want him mixed up in all of this. "I mean it," she said right before she touched his arm, trying to convince him to let it lie. But when she touched him, she felt his concern again, this time coupled with a strong desire to protect her and she leaned towards him for a second, almost as if she were going to lean against him, like they were friends. She realized what she was doing and jerked back, not wanting to bother him more than she already was. Then she started to cry again in great, racking sobs. She covered her face with her hands, pretending that he couldn't see her if she couldn't see him. Apparently she couldn't hold back the tears anymore. It was amazing to her that he actually really wanted to help. At a time when she felt so helpless and worthless on a regular basis ... feeling his desire to protect her was incredible and touching and unbelievable. "I'm sorry," she said, her words muffled as she spoke through her hands. Kinsey didn't know how to convey it or show what she wanted, but she wished he would hug her or hold her or something. Then maybe she actually would feel safe, knowing how much he wanted to protect her. She couldn't ask him to do that though. They hardly knew one another. She nodded at his explanations of how he realized what was happening. It made sense, but the main point was that he didn't know until today. He didn't know this had been going on since first year. That was probably a good thing.

"Good." Riley said. He wasn't sure why he had said that. It wasn't as if it was particularly good, not that it was bad, "I just mean it's good you have a dad... some people don't... and it's good that you like him..." he admitted with a bit of a blush. He felt like such a dork. Just because he had trained himself to notice little mistakes and quirks of other people, didn't mean that he was immune to human error himself.
She insisted that she couldn't tell him and there was nothing that he could do. He hated hearing that. There was always something that could be done. He could walk her to class, he could provide a buffer so she wasn't alone if/when the person came up to her or tried to find her. He could help her find a professor to talk to or some way to make it better, but he understood that in her mind, it wasn't that easy. And perhaps it really wasn't. Perhaps he didn't understand the full extent, at least, not yet. She leaned over closer to him and then snapped back to her previous position. He wondered if she wanted him to touch her, he normally gave people their space, but in times like these maybe that wasn't best. he scooted a little closer and slowly wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer to him, wanting to take the pain she was feeling away from her. He hated that she was crying, and hated that maybe she was crying more than normal because of him, because he knew. The sky light bright with the lightning as it flashed above them and then was followed by another roar of thunder. "let me help," he insisted. "let me do something! I can stay with you so you're not alone, I can... I don't know, there has to be something." he felt like be was practically begging.

His answer ... made absolutely no sense. Kinsey looked at him curiously and he seemed to realize it and tried to explain it better. Despite herself, Kinsey smiled at him. He was blushing and she realized that she liked that. It made her feel more comfortable around him. "Thanks," she answered, not really knowing what else to say.
He didn't argue with her, or say anything in fact, when she told him that he couldn't stop it. She thought for sure that he would push her to let him tell someone or something similar. Maybe he didn't because she was crying so hard. Kinsey wished she could stop, but it was almost like she'd lost control. Then she felt him wrap his arms around her and he pulled her close. Like before, she felt his desire to protect her and that fact made Kinsey lean into him before crying against his chest. He was trying to help her and he hardly even knew her! She snuggled into him, surprised by how quickly she was starting to calm down. She knew exactly why. It was all because he wanted to protect her. Knowing that and feeling that made all the difference to her. When the lightning flashed again, she was still crying, but she wasn't consumed by it anymore. She shook her head against his chest when he asked to help. "There's nothing you can do," she said, surprised with the strength of her voice even though she was still crying. "Or anyone," Kinsey added. She didn't want him to feel singled out. She sniffled. "This helps a little though. Thank you." Not that Kinsey was going to force him to hold her every day or anything. She was more trying to thank him for what he was doing now. Her tears continued to show down and she relaxed more and more with his arms around her. She just ... felt safe for the first time in a while.

"I can walk with you, to classes and such, I can make sure you're never alone for anyone to hurt you." he insisted, trying desperately to help ease some of this intense burden. he felt guilty and he wasn't sure why. He felt like it wasn't fair for him to be in such a good place and her to be in such a bad one. He was fine, sure, he had weird family drama to deal with, but he had friends and wasn't in any danger. If she was out here on her own, where were any of her friends? Where was her sister or any of her siblings? Riley knew she had quite a few siblings, he knew a couple of them. "Dose anyone else know?" he asked, holding her tightly to him as she cried into his chest. He really didn't mind holding her, he was happy to be offering some comfort and he could see that holding her was right move even before she said so. He could feel her breathing calming and her sobs getting fewer and farther between. He really wanted to be there for her, genuinely. He knew this was an awful situation, but he liked holding her, as much as it calmed her, it also made him feel like at least he was helping, and he felt immensely closer to her even though they had only just interacted personally.

He started to say that he could walk her to classes and make sure she wasn't ever alone and Kinsey shook her head. She couldn't take over his life. They hardly knew one another and he wanted to put everything to the side to help her? It was very sweet, but she'd feel so guilty. "No, no," she muttered softly, still trying to gain control of her emotions. "What about all your friends? It won't make sense to any of them if you're always with me all of a sudden." Besides that, with him being hyper-observant it would be super hard for her to keep her gift a secret if he was always with her. "Besides that, we don't have all the same classes anymore." She was starting to calm down, she wasn't gasping for air anymore, but the tears were still running down her face. She was in the silent sobbing stage now. He was holding her tightly and Kinsey couldn't help but cuddle closer to him as he did so. He was just so warm and sweet and nice and she couldn't fight it. At his next question she shook her head, "No one knows, and I need it to stay that way." For their safety, but also for hers. She didn't want Dom to get worse because she started telling people. She closed her eyes and started taking deep breaths as the tears finally started to come to a stop. She didn't pull away from Riley though. Having his arms around her was comforting and she wasn't ready to let that go yet ... unless he pulled away. If he did that, she wouldn't fight him, of course, but right now she just wanted to relax.

Her excuses for keeping him away weren't very good and he knew that it was likely she was just searching for reasons, though it did seem like she didn't want him around all of the time, and he didn't blame her, it would be a little much, they weren't even sure if they made good friends yet, they had just tonight spoke about anything other than school. He was still a stranger, just one who had her on basically on his lap. "I don't have a lot of close friends." he admitted with a shrug. "My sister would notice, but she would probably just assume you were my girlfriend or something." he shrugged and then blushed a little. "But I understand." he nodded. He surely didn't want to make her uncomfortable, and as much as he wanted to protect her and keep her safe, she knew the situation better than he did, though he knew with a little bit of time he could find out a lot more, maybe even who it was. The was another intense bolt of lightning followed immediately by a loud, rumbling thunder clap and then the clouds decided it was time to lighten their load. Rain began to fall hard around them. Riley didn't really mind that he was getting wet, but he meant what he said earlier about not wanting her to get sick, plus, she had been out here a lot longer than he had. "At least let me walk you back to the common room?" he asked, Unfortunately, it meant he had to let her go, something he felt very sorry that he had to do, as they walked, he slipped his arm around her, half as a gesture to keep her warm and half because he knew that it comforted her. They made it to the common room without getting caught, thankfully because it was after curfew and they were soaking wet so he could only imagine having to explain it to anyone who caught them. He let her go inside first and was almost disappointed that the end of their walk had come so quickly. "Okay well... goodnight, Kinsey Bainbridge." he said once they were safely inside. He gave her another hug before heading to his dorm, leaving her with his hoodie, not wanting to ask for it back and leaving her to walk without it to her dorm.

He didn't have a lot of close friends? How was that possible with how sweet he was? It didn't make any sense to Kinsey. Granted, just an hour ago she wouldn't have really cared since the two of them never really interacted with one another, but now she did care. She noticed him blush a little when he talked about what his sister would think, seeing them together constantly. Then he said he understood. He seemed ... disappointed and Kinsey didn't understand it. She could still sense him wanting to take care of her and protect her. Was that why he was disappointed. She hesitated, "Well maybe you could walk with me sometimes ... when we're going to a class that we both have," she answered softly, sure that he would take that opportunity. She just didn't like how sad he'd seemed at her refusal. Then the rain started falling and she instinctively cringed into Riley's warm arms and body. Then he was saying they should go back. She instantly nodded, rising to her feet and feeling somewhat empty and vulnerable once they were no longer touching. He wrapped his arm around her as they walked and Kinsey moved slightly closer to him, sighing at how nice it felt, to be wanted and protected. She smiled when he said goodnight and then echoed his words. "Goodnight Riley Fudge." He gave her a hug and she ... enjoyed it. Then he was going to his dorm and Kinsey returned to hers, not even realizing she still had his jacket until she started getting ready to sleep. --- the end --- @riley
