She agreed that she didn't want to push him away and she grabbed his hands, something that he didn't mind and actually really liked. He was glad that she wanted him in her life as much as he wanted to be in her life. He couldn't picture it without her. "I'm not going anywhere." he said again. She told him that he figured it out and he felt both proud and curious. Then she explained that she could read people's intentions and he nodded along as she spoke. He began to wonder how extreme her abilities were. If she could read his every intention. If she had known that he felt like kissing her the other day, or if she could tell that he thought she was beautiful. He was fairly sure she could pick up on the fact that he wanted to make her happy and protect her, but he wondered what else she knew, and at first, it did make him a little uncomfortable, but more in a way of not knowing than anything else. "What happened with Diana? What did she say?" he asked, wanting her to finish her thought, grabbing onto her hands as she began to pull them away, holding her to her promise not to pull away from him.

He repeated that he wasn't going anywhere and Kinsey nodded, finding herself actually believing him this time. He cared about her. She knew that. He showed it in how protective he was of her, how he always did his best to make sure she was alright. She just wished it was more than in a friendly way. He nodded when she explained that he was right and how, but he didn't say anything. Wasn't he curious about how it worked? Didn't he have any questions about it or anything? "You ... can ask me about it if you want," she said softly. Now that he knew, she wanted him to feel comfortable around her. If he had any questions, she'd rather he ask them. She wasn't sure if he would, but that was what she wanted. "If you have any questions about how it works or anything." Kinsey glanced down, smiling as she looked at their hands.
Then he was asking her what Diana said and holding tighter to her hands when she tried to pull away. Kinsey felt the emotions rising in her again, but his touch was calming to her, soothing in a way she never would have imagined anyone's touch to be. Before Riley, touching people felt like plunging her head into a bucket of ice water. Being immersed in their intentions was intense and sometimes scary, but with Riley it never was, which was one of the reasons why she relied on him so. Kinsey sighed, replaying her sister's words in her mind. She wouldn't repeat her word-for-word, but she would tell Riley what she said. "She said that it's exhausting, me being able to sense her intentions and that everything is focused on me and what I read from people. She said that I'm paranoid and think that everyone is out to get me and that she's sick of hiding her thoughts because of me ..." Kinsey's voice was tight with emotion, but she was proud of herself for not crying. She wasn't even tearing up. "Basically, she's done with me. I just ... I never saw it coming because out of all of my sisters, she was the one that didn't pull away when we discovered my gift. She and my brother Dustin and now she let all this out and she meant it." Kinsey paused and then added softly, "and now I cant help but wonder how many other people feel that way."

Riley had many questions, but right now, the main thing on his mind was what was going on with Kinsey and her sister, what had upset her. "I can ask questions as they come up, mostly I want to focus on you, whatever we can do to make this better." He insisted. He continued to hold her and listened as she explained what her sister had said to her. How any sibling could behave like that, he wasn't sure and never would be sure, even though he hadn't seen his brother in a while, he knew if he needed him, then he'd be there. He was fairly sure of it, at least. "What does that have to do with you being bullied?" he asked. "Does she think you deserve it because you have a different ability than most people do?" he continued to ask, feeling himself get a little angry, like he wanted to protect her and put himself between her and danger or criticism. "And what about your brother? Dustin. Where is he now? When was the last time you saw him?" he asked. Her last sentence got to him, he shook his head and made sure to keep eye contact with her. "I don't feel that way." he promised. "If anything, it's kind of nice to have someone who gets it. I mean, I'm probably not exactly as good as you are since you don't have a choice to read people, but it's nice to find someone who doesn't think I'm a freak." he shrugged.

He said he wanted to focus on her and what they could do to make it better and Kinsey shook her head a little. They couldn't just "make" this better. She was going to have to get over the fact that her sister didn't like her anymore, and that she blamed Kinsey for it. That wouldn't be fixed overnight, if it could be fixed at all. She shook her head when he asked what it had to do with being bullied. "It didn't have anything to do with the bullying. The conversation ... shifted. I told her that you were helping me with my bully and she said that I hardly knew you." Kinsey looked away, embarrassed about what she said next but not willing to lie to him or hold anything back. "I said I knew you more than her and started to ask why. Well ... I demanded for her to tell me why and then she said that all to me." She thought for a moment. "She didn't tell me what she thought about me being bullied. Just that she knows about it." She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. "Dustin is in London. He came back and visited me during the second task. He's a professional Quidditch player for the Falmouth Falcons and ... I haven't told him about being bullied." Which was probably on her, but she didn't want to stress him out or distract him from his playing. She exhaled heavily when he said he didn't feel that way. Then she pulled her hand out of his so she could give him a hug. "I don't think you're a freak," she whispered, so relieved that he wasn't pulling away from her. Maybe it would happen later on, but in that moment she decided that she was going to pretend like it wouldn't, like he would always stay with her.

She explained that her conversation with Diana didn't go much into what Diana thought about her being bullied and revolved more around why she had pulled away from Kinsey after seemingly being there for her in the past. Riley nodded along, giving her the non-verbal cue that he understood and was listening. "i really can't pretend to know what that must have felt like." he admitted. His siblings were pretty okay when it came down to it. His sister would sometimes mock or tease him for being observant, but he knew that overall she thought it was cool and fun and liked when he was able to tell her things about people. He knew not everyone thought he was weird, otherwise he wouldn't have gotten the invite to be the secret Advice Writer for the newspaper, something which Grey Slater approached him about earlier and he had agreed to try out. He hugged her back when she hugged him and he was a bit surprised to hear that her brother didn't know that she was being bullied. "Maybe you should tell him. He knows you well, right? Maybe he would have something to say about it or could do something about it." he suggested. He wanted to help, but he knew there was only so much he could do, and only so much Kinsey would even allow him to do since Riley didn't yet know who the bully even was.

Kinsey nodded when Riley said that he couldn't imagine how she felt. That made sense. After all, his siblings didn't treat him the same way Diana just treated her. At least, she assumed they didn't. "I know. Thank you for listening though," she said softly. Really she was just so glad she had someone who cared enough to listen to her. When he hugged her again, Kinsey felt herself finally starting to relax. Then he mentioned telling Dustin and she tensed a little, but thought for a bit before saying anything. Maybe Dustin could give her some advice, even though he wasn't here to try and fix it. Maybe that was better. "I wouldn't ask him to do anything about it," she started slowly. "but I could ask for advice or something. I just ... I don't want to stress him out ... or be a burden to him like I was to Diana," She took a deep breath before pulling back from the long hug. "Thanks Riley. You really have no idea how much you help me, but you do. Thanks." She believed that he wasn't going to abandon her now, but at the same time Kinsey felt a strong desire to not be a burden to him. She wanted him to always feel comfortable with her.

"Maybe you should tell him." he suggested again. "Not that I mind being here for you, I don't mind, I like that you have me to rely on." he explained. "But, if he stuck with you so far, he'll probably still be there now." Riley hated the idea that all of her family was pushing her away, and a part of him had a really hard time even believing the idea. He wanted to believe that there was some good in there somewhere, at least from someone. With the copious amount of siblings that she had, there had to be someone that hadn't pushed her away, someone that cared for her as much as he did, and he didn't want her to miss out on those relationships. She thanked him again, saying that he had no idea how much he helped her. He had some idea, he could see the physical and emotional change in her when he was around. He was a comfort for her, and her being comforted was a comfort for him. "You don't have to thank me, Kins. It isn't a one-sided feeling." he insisted, sure that they felt the same way about each other.

Kinsey nodded firmly this time. "Alright, I'll send him an owl about it. I promise." She tried to sound confident about the idea, but there was a knot in her stomach all the same. Still, Dustin was always pretty supportive of her. She had no idea how he would react to finding out she was bullied, but she admitted to herself that he should know. It was wrong of her to keep it from him for so long. Knowing that didn't take away the nerves though. She had no idea what he would say back, or even how to tell him. But after talking to Riley about it, she wanted to tell him the truth. When Riley said she didn't have to thank him and that it wasn't sided, she smiled back, though she didn't believe him fully. After all, what had she ever done to help him? He was the one who helped her with things; Kinsey hadn't even ever seen Riley upset or in a bad mood, just concerned when she was having a hard time. Maybe if he ever did struggle with something he would come to her? But probably not because she was sure that he had other friends that he talked to about those kinds of things. Friends that he was now neglecting because he was helping her. She pushed those thoughts out of her mind and quickly quipped. "Good to know ... but I don't think that means I shouldn't have to thank you," she quirked an eyebrow to show she was teasing. She wanted to lighten the mood a little.

He was glad that she had at least said that she'd tell her brother. A part of him wondered if she was just saying that to make him shut up about it, but he meant it. He had to believe that at least someone would stand up for her the way that he did. Maybe he and Dustin could team up and try to get this bully off of Kinsey. Though, he still didn't know who the bully was. He knew it wasn't a member of her family, though some of them seemed to be bullying her as much as her bully did from what Riley had heard. He wanted to know, he wanted to at least study the person and figure out why they were picking on Kinsey, if not actually a address them about it. It could have been anyone. It could have been one of his friends, it could have been someone he say everyone and had no idea. He had figured out one major secret, and he knew the other would come eventually, but maybe one was enough for the day. He decided to change the subject. "So, do you think when it gets warmer we could swim in this pond? Or is it to gross?" he asked, her arm still around her shoulders.

Riley didn't say anything when Kinsey promised to tell her brother, so she decided to take that as him believing her. At least, he was blunt enough to call her out on most things if he didn't think she was being honest, but she was about this. She didn't know how Dustin would react and was definitely nervous about that, but she would tell him. The next question was when. Would it be better to do it in person or to owl him? She wasn't sure about that either. Maybe she could ask him to come see her and tell him then? She decided to think on it, still not sure what to do. Then Riley spoke, asking if she thought they could swim in the pond when it got warmer or not. Kinsey looked curiously at the pond and then over to him. "I don't know. I haven't really paid attention to that before. I guess we'll have to see," then she rested her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes and loving how it felt to have his arms around her. ---the end--- @riley
