School first, grey had promised. Riley had a hard time not laughing when he did so, and he thought he caught something on Grey's face which wasn't too happy to be saying it either. Riley was someone who always got his schoolwork done as far in advance as possible, and he got fun out of doing it, so it wasn't something that he normally procrastinated on. Which meant that he had plenty of time to do other things: outside reading, social obligations and now newspaper work. However, some of his outside studying could go along with newspaper work. He now had a reason to watch people, it seemed a little less weird than him just doing it for the sake of his own personal research. "Yeah, I don't foresee school getting in the way." he admitted, with a bit of a smirk.
Grey opened up a letter and gave it a read, he then explained to Riley what kind of letters not to answer. Riley was pretty confident in his abilities to have figured that one out for himself. But it was kind of humorous to hear his cohort talking about it anyway and explaining that someday they'd have to reply, but that day was still a while away. "Do I answer any of the love ones?" he asked, he wasn't sure if it was just because of the age difference and mostly impossibility of the letter that Grey read, that they weren't answering it, or, if Love as a whole was off limits. "This one..." he said, reading over the scribbles on a torn sheet of parchment. "Comes from a guy who is afraid to tell someone how he feels about them and is asking how to know if they will like him back." he explained.

@riley Grey wasn’t exactly worried about school ever being an issue when it came to his writers. For the most part, the good ones knew how to balance their school work, personal life, and the newspaper. The ones that were awful at that ended up writing bit pieces that he figured the students would find interesting. He didn’t hold anything against them, but he believed that the ones who could handle more on their plate and be successful at the same time deserved the real articles and stories. Rewarding those that did well was never a bad thing. As for Riley? He was a Ravenclaw. Being a Gryffindor meant that there was a certain level of understanding that was lost between the two houses. Grey had never been disappointed by the Ravenclaw writers he had in the past, so that was already a good sign for Riley when it came to time management. If he had thought there would be problems, he wouldn’t have asked him to do this in the first place.
He was hoping that Riley would ask about the L word. They were going to get to that subject eventually, since it always seemed to be the heart of the majority of the letters. Even the ones that didn’t explicitly say it, were still about it. That was the trick, and the difficulty in trying to decipher a good portion of them. Instead of immediately answering Riley’s question, Grey decided to listen to the example letter that the other boy read off. He couldn’t help but smile at the content of it. That one was simple, and it would reinforce the answer that he wanted to give about answering love advice. “Yes and no,” Grey stated, purposely staying cryptic. That was the only way to go about it. “These are the ones where you use your own discretion as a journalist. If you get a dozen or so letters exactly like this, then do a batch response to all of them. There’s no harm in answering a question like this with a generalized answer. It’s safe to bet that this guy will do one of two things – either ask the girl out, or hold his feelings in,” Grey explained. He had seen hundreds of these before, and both the Yule Ball and Valentine’s Day had brought in hordes of letters asking this exact same question. “If you were to answer it, how would you go about it?” he asked, curious to see how Riley would respond to something this simple. Or maybe it was difficult. Grey wasn’t exactly sure. This was why he hired an advice columnist after all.

Grey explained that these letters, like the ones he listed before regarding unrequited love would come in a-dime-a-dozen and should also be answered in a vague manner which addressed all the letters of the same type. Riley could understand that it would 1) be boring to answer the same types of letters over and over again in every column, and 2) would be boring for the readers to re-read the same answers and same types of questions over and over again. He nodded along with his editors advice on the question. It was true, there were only really two possible outcomes of the situation anyway and only so much advice Riley could give, especially since it wasn’t signed. How would he answer that letter right now, Grey asked him. Riley tilted his head up, holding the letter off the table for better neck support, sitting hunched over reading all the time had done a number on his neck, shoulders and back over the years. “Uh - I guess it’s pretty simple, like you say. The guy should just go with his gut instincts, and pay attention to the kind of signs he’s getting from the person. Like, why does he like them? Is it just because they’re attractive or is it because they feel a connection?” he shrugged. It would be easy, if he knew who the two were, to observe their interactions and determine if they were both equally interested based on their body language and facial expressions during conversation.

@riley Watching Riley go through the ropes was interesting. Of all the journalists he had taken on and trained over the last few years, and even the ones that had trained him, the advice columnists were starting to look like a unique bunch. They weren’t necessarily made from the same mold that the rest of the club members were, and that allowed them to think both independently from the newspaper, and operate within it. The same could almost be said about the photographers that he employed from time to time, but they were still required to take specific content for articles. That didn’t mean he found the occasional artistic piece in his ready for print pile. Everyone in the club was talented in their own right – motivation was a different story though, and he didn’t feel like thinking about that at this point in time. Riley figured out a response to Grey’s question relatively fast, and the Gryffindor leaned on his hand as he listened. He wasn’t wrong, this was a relatively simple case. Following either the superficial side of things, or looking for a deeper, more intimate connection was usually how those things ended up. More the former than the latter though, in his experience with both the newspaper and other things. Infatuation and love weren’t always synonymous with each other, and having an idealistic vision of someone without truly knowing them could end horribly. “Sounds like a pretty simple answer to me,” Grey responded, leaning back in his chair once again. “There’s nothing wrong with being broad with answers, especially if you can’t get out and observe them the way you want to. Eventually all of it blends together.” Or was literally the same thing being asked over and over again by the same selection of people. Those ones got annoying after a while, and responding to their letters would only enable them. “So for the rest of this meeting, let’s keep opening letters, and I’ll quiz you on proper responses. It’ll give you a good idea of what you’ll be dealing with regularly. Sound good?” [End, or one more from you?]

Grey seemed to accept the way in which Riley had pitched to answer the question. That nod gave the Ravenclaw boy a bit more confidence when it came to his new position on the paper. He still wasn’t entirely sure about it, however, he could do with some professional writing experience, and it would give him a chance to study more people than he would normally get a chance to. And different kinds of people too, not just his friends. “I think I’m getting the hang of it.” Riley agreed, especially given the confidence boost that he got when Grey agreed that he was answering the letter correctly, or correctly enough. "Sure. Let's keep chugging along here." Riley agreed, unfolding another letter. The rest of the meeting went by much like how it started. The two of them just sat around the room, reading letters and talking about how to answer them. It was a situation that Riley never thought he’d find himself in, but it was one that he was beginning to settle into.
