Luke had been in the UK for about 3 weeks now and he was a little over 1 week into working his new job. This job had really been a find. He knew he wanted to work in the same mountain village near the Hogwarts castle because it would be closer to his siblings when he finally got around/got the courage to seek them out and make way on the reason that he actually came to Britain. He wanted to be completely settled in before he took that leap. And he was beginning to think that his first steps weren't with the two Linley children themselves, but instead with the Ministry where he could get more information about his parents. As far as he knew, they were alive somewhere and hopefully were still the parents of his siblings, unless they had both been put up for adoption too. However, since the had the same last name, he doubted it.
He had clocked on for his shift about an hour ago. At the time, the bar hadn't been very full, However, as it got later in the day, it began to fill up, as was expected. Luke stood behind the bar counter, admiring the full shelf of liquor behind him. He had scored the right job, he was pretty sure of it. Bars in England were far different from Bars in South Carolina, it was a completely different culture, but he was glad to work in one nevertheless.

Claire wasn't much of a drinker or 'bar' person, but sometimes you needed a little change to celebrate. She'd just submitted the mountain of paperwork to the Ministry to approve her transfer, so in a few days she'd finally be moved to the Hit wizard department. It was a better fit for her. Less politics, more action. So, she'd decided to get a drink after work. She wasn't in the mood to find someone to accompany her though, and instead headed off alone.
The Three Broomsticks was always a good choice when you wanted company but not necessarily friends. The place was busy enough that you could people watch and enjoy yourself but not so busy it was absolutely suffocating.
Claire headed for the bar immediately, deciding it was better then trying to try to find a table, and leaned against the counter. "One Blishen's Firewhiskey." she asked the bar tender casually. Sure, it was more expensive then regular firewhisky but it was also a better quality. Basically? It was worth it sometimes. Especially when she actually wanted to relax for a change.

Luke was pulled out of his thoughts by the voice of a woman who had leaned against the counter and ordered Blishen's Firewhiskey. "Very nice taste." Luke smirked and grabbed the bottle down from a slightly higher shelf. Luke, the new bartender, but ever the charming country boy, poured the girl her drink and set it in front of her when he had finished. He set the bottle back on the shelf and then turned back to the blonde, "Anything else I can do for you?" he asked, feeling very American. His accident, or, lack-there-of was obvious to everyone and he actually believed that it was a reason that he got the job here. To the English, Americans were exotic and interesting. Especially, at least in his experience, southerners. He supposed he did have an accent, whatever the accent that people from South Carolina had. A basic southern accent, he supposed.

Claire heard the twang of an American accent and raised an eyebrow. She wasn't completely positive it was American though until he turned back with the glass and asked if rhere was anything else he could do. Most definitely American. It was a little different though, but that wasn't to surprising. There were several scenes in America, all depending on what part of the country you were from. She wasn't familiar enough with Anerica to identify his specific accent though. Still, her curiosity was peaked. What was an American doing here, tending a bar in the Three Broomsticks. "You're American." Claire stated instead of answering his question. There was always a hint of interest when you met someone in an environment you wouldn't expect.
Picking up the glass she swirled the contents just a moment before taking a sip and feeling the familiar burning in her throat as the alcohol went down. "You probably hear this often, but it's not exactly common to see an American around here."

Luke couldn't help but smirk when she ignored his question and pointed out that he was American instead. It wasn't an untrue statement. He was American, and damn proud of it. However, He had no plans of returning to America any time soon, if ever at all. He'd go back and visit over Holidays and for vacation, but he was here for as long as it took to get to knew his siblings. And if the two of them ever did accept him into their lives and wanted to stay in the UK, Luke would apply for citizenship and stay too. Maybe he'd eventually pick up a bit of an accent, he wasn't exactly sure how it worked. He hoped at least he'd pick up a little slang. "Yes ma'am I am... and uh... yes I sure do." he answered both of her questions at once. He had only been working here a little over a week, but he had been in town for about 3 weeks now and he wasn't sure he had spoken to someone yet that didn't ask where he was from or bring up that he was American. "I'm guessing you're not though. You from around here?" he asked, making friendly conversation, as was a part of his job. Getting the customers talking was a sure way to ensure that they'd stay and order more. That, and the girl interested him. She had to be around his age. And he had to admit, at least to himself, he was rather lonely and welcomed the company.

The American bartender was a friendly and enthusiastic individual from what she could tell already. But was that surprising? This was the Three Broomsticks, of course they'd want a friendly and outgoing bartender. The bartender played a crucial role in the patrons' experience, and the pub wanted to keep it's good reputation. Of course you had pubs like the Hog's head that cared little for customer experience but you didn't go to the Hog's Head for just a normal night out.
Claire smirked just a little as he asked if she was from around here. "Not here as in Hogsmeade, but England yes. The accent gave me away, right?" Claire didn't think of her accent often, because everyone had a similar accent around here. But to an American it has to be quite obvious. Raising her glass she took another sip of the alcoholic beverage. "So? What brought you to our side of the ocean?"

Leaving all of his friends behind in America had been hard for him. Especially since some of those people he thought would be around for the rest of his life. Of course, he hadn't been anticipating moving across the ocean. However, since he was here he vowed to make the best of it and get to know new people. He knew this job would be a good way to get to know new people and that was definitely a plus. She admitted that she was from England and asked if the accent gave it away. He gave a laugh. "Yes it did." he admitted. "I should really get used to hearing people speak like that." he added. She then asked him why he had moved, it was a simple enough question though it sparked a fairly complicated answer. "I moved here for family." he answered simply. After his first night, when he had explained to the woman in the pub the full reason that he had moved here, he had decided that he needed a simpler answer. Not every stranger needed to know his life story. The woman seemed pretty content just hanging out and talking with him, and if he wasn't serving customers and had finished all of his duties, which he hadn't yet, but he knew he would; then he was able to just chat. Right now he could afford a break. "Luke Maebury." he introduced himself.

Claire chuckled softly at his agreement and admittance that he should get used to the accents. She wouldn't deny that. He'd need to get used to them around here, he'd be hearing it everyday. "Give it time. Soon you won't even think about it." humans did adjust to change rather quickly usually after all.
The blonde raised an eyebrow at the vague answe of family. Sure, families moved to different countries from time to time. But he was of age so a parent moving for business didn't seem likely. It couldn't be for his own career since he was working at a bar. "That's quite a ways to go for family." she commented casually before taking another drink. Maybe he was just close to his family and moved with them, despite being old enough to live on his own. Regardless, she wouldn't push for a more detailed answer. "Slater. Claire Slater." the girl introduced herself back. She wasn't too worried about him knowing her name. Sure she'd been mentioned as an Auror and the one responsible for killing Elaine Dupree's right hand several months ago. But it had been in November. Only someone following the news would have a chance or remembering her role. "I assume you haven't been here long? Since your still adjusting to our accents."

"I'm sure your right." he agreed when she said that in time he wouldn't even realize the accents. It had been a little difficult to understand at first, but now he was at least getting the hang of it and learning what certain bits of slang meant. He wondered if his accent would ever calm? If he'd start to take on certain tips from the British in his way of speaking. He wondered how certain words would sound coming out of his Southern mouth. She said that it was a long way to move for family and he shrugged, "If you don't have family, what do you have?" he asked, mostly as a rhetorical question. He didn't mean for or expect her to actually answer it. Though there was always the possibility that she didn't agree with it, in which case, he was sure she'd at least be civil about it. Perhaps she and her family weren't very close. Of course, he could say he wasn't all that close with his, not his blood family anyway, as he had never met any of them but had moved here to do so. She introduced herself also and then asked if he had been here long, something she had assumed he hadn't since he hadn't gotten used to the accents yet. "Just a few weeks. I got here at the beginning of the month." he told her. "I'm still trying to get my barrings and figure out how things work around the country." he admitted.

The corners of Claire's lips curls up in a small smile. From the sounds of it family was very important to him. Hers was too, it was just complicated as well. Her parents were overbearing and put quite a bit of pressure on all of their children, but primarily Claire and Grey. While Grey had rebelled against their expectations Claire had given in, wanting to set a good example for her younger siblings. It'd caused a rift between her and Grey. And while she'd been close to the youngest for most their life after the death of her fiancé last year she'd pulled away emotionally from all of them. Still trying to keep up the front of perfection her parents expected. "You're right." was her answer before taking a sip of her drink. "Your family is very lucky you are willing to travel so far for them." she added after a moments contemplation.
His next comment made her chuckle softly. The US and UK were quite different, despite speaking the same language. Well... mostly. English was quite different between the two people. "Well, I've heard the magical community is much more relaxed here. No mental laws about interacting with muggles." okay, to be fair the US had eventually abolished the law but it'd still existed in many living wizards' life time.

Of course, if he had told her his full situation then she would likely understand a bit more and he wouldn’t have to be so vague in his insistence that family was important. It was. Family, to Luke, was the most important value that one could have. How one treated their family reflected greatly on the kind of person that they were. Luke, with his own unique situation, reflected on family a little differently, maybe, than others who grew up with their biological parents and siblings living in the same house, or at least nearby. But, he believed in the importance of family now more than ever. She seemed to be speculating about it herself and he hoped that he hadn’t opened up too hard of a subject for her. He nodded, not sure what else to say there, nothing else really seemed like it needed saying.
She went on to explain that she heard that the magical community was much more relaxed here. Something he had also heard, but hadn’t really thought about until after he had moved here. America did have it’s faults, something not even the southern charmer was blind to, and it’s past experience with muggles was one of them, in his opinion at least. And his parents shared that feeling, his family had never feared muggles and his parents wanted their kids to be able to interact with them, however, opportunities to do so were limited. “Yeah I’ve noticed that. It’s kind of a breath of fresh air.” he admitted. His political views regarding muggles seemed like they would be much more appreciated here. “So Claire Slater, what brights you into the Three Broomsticks tonight?” he asked.

It really was interesting it think of all th differences between magical communities. She was used to how things were run in the U.K. But other countries? Vastly different at times. Even if they had originated from the U.K., like MACUSA. The colonies, the founding members of the magical community. Many had been British. "I assume you weren't a fan of some of their laws." she observed, but it wasn't like she could blame him. If she had grown up under some of those restrictive laws she'd probably feel the same way.
At the wuestion of what brought her here tonight she paused. Masking it with a longer sip of her drink she pondered what she might say. It wasn't like she was shy about her employment, but being a new comer to the country she wasn't sure how well he knew the functions of the ministry. Aurors existed in MACUSA, but what about hit wizards? The biggest different between them was the fact that aurors were more dark wizard catchers, while hit Wizards were more... eliminate the threat. They had ministry approval to do whatever was necessary to stop the threat while aurors still had to act within their orders. "Celebrating a change in career." she answered truthfully. If he wanted to know specifics she'd tell him but only if he wanted.

The differences between the laws of the UK and the laws of America were great. So much so that Luke hadn’t quite come to grasp them yet. He had only been here for a short time and to be honest, he hadn’t done too much research before he came over here. He knew that the muggle and wizarding communities were a bit more connected and people were freer to interact with muggles in their everyday lives. People here were more willing to send their kids to muggle schools, and they shopped openly in muggle markets, as well as wore muggle clothes, even in the exclusive wizard locations like Diagon alley. Luke had always worn muggle clothes when at home and while he worked, especially, since he had worked on a muggle farm and robes would just get in the way. He missed farming. “No one’s a fan of all laws.” he shrugged. But, for the most part, they all hard a purpose. His family was a little too liberal with their views on muggles and it was often hard for them to be so within their community. The UK seemed like a better fit for the family given their views.
A change in career. How nice for her. “Yeah? What’re you doing now?” he asked. Lucas had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. He had been just starting to think about it when he got the news that he was adopted and his entire perspective changed. Hearing what people did gave him a bit of inspiration, or at least it gave him something to think about. He wasn’t in the place of taking on a career yet, he wanted to settle in and complete what he had come here for first.

Claire raised an eyebrow. Speaking frankly, laws happened to be part of her job. Or rather, enforcing them. Though... Could she even say that now? Technically speaking Claire's new job involved being exempt from certain laws to bring justice. Finally though she smile and just nodded in agreement. The political game of what was and wasn't lawful was part of the reason she was transferring after all. She couldn't deny that she was a fan of every law. She finished the firewhisky in her next drink. There was the temptation to get a second, but she held off for now, just setting the class down on the counter and running a hand through her long hair as he asked what she was doing now. "I'm a Hit Witch." She answered confidently, finally admitting aloud what she was. No longer an Auror. Hit Witch. "I don't know if you have them in the United States. But you can think of them as.... Legalized bounty hunters." That wasn't exactly the best way to put it, but if he didn't know what they were that was a pretty good way to begin explaining it. They both went after extremely dangerous criminals after all that had high bounties on their head. "We're in the same department as Aurors. Only when a job is given a 'stop by any means necessary' order it comes to us." That was definitely true. The Hit Wizard program operated to their own set of rules. So it only escalated to them when the cause was deemed futile by normal methods.

The friendly woman explained that was a hit with, a career that Luke hadn’t exactly expected to come out of her mouth. Not that he was judging her based on her looks, he just wasn’t sure he knew many hit witches and wasn’t expecting to meet one in the bar. But, it was as good a place as any, wasn’t it? Everyone needed a drink. “That’s really interesting. Did you always wannah be a hit witch or did you fall into that career?” he asked. He wasn’t sure how it worked, really. As to whether or not they had them in America, he wasn’t sure. He was pretty sure that his best friend from school, Finn, had a similar type of job, but he didn’t think she had been a hit witch in the States. If she had been, he was the last to know. “A lot more exciting than bar tending, I bet.” he decided, nodding his head.
