“It's alright,” Susan assured her about her mediocre performance at Potions. “I went into it knowing I didn’t need it for N.E.W.T. level for the career choice I wanted so I wasn’t that upset.” Oona knew that, when she would have to narrow down her courses for certain instead of just saying with what she thought she might want to continue, it would be a challenge. That wasn't to say that she couldn't read about the subjects that she would eventually have to drop, but it would feel so different from taking the plethora of courses to which she had grown so accustomed.
Susan said that one girl she knew who took the subject was a pure-blood in her own year who was, in Susan's words, “nuts” about it. “Other than that,” Susan explained, “I’m not really sure. I don’t really talk about blood types—usually I can decipher who has had some Muggle influences in their lives if they recognize who I am.”
That was probably true, Oona thought; Susan must have been able to figure out people's blood purity more easily than most, since anyone who was aware of the Muggle world would have been able to recognize her as a member of the Royal Family. It must have been really strange at first, though Oona supposed that Susan got recognized more when she was outside of school and in the Muggle world than when she wasn't.
“I almost took Muggle Studies for the sake of seeing what it was like from the wizarding point of view, but by that point I was reaching a breaking point with my course load. I love to learn, but I didn’t want to burn out by fourteen either.”
Oona nodded. She hadn't reached that point with her courses yet, or at least she didn't think that she had. “Some students in my year have needed Calming Draught for their O.W.L.s already,” she informed Susan, so she could see the older girl's point.
“My internship with the Ministry is with the Department of Regulation of Magical Creatures; that’s the magic I want to focus on.”
“The Ministry?!” Oona repeated in hushed excitement, surprised to hear that Susan wasn't going back into the Muggle world to take up some sort of Royal duty or another. “Do you know what you'll be doing?” Oona hoped that it would be something more interesting than filing papers.
