Savtaj MacMillian loved to be outside, but on days like this one, when the Scottish mountains decided to act like Scottish Mountains and pour down rain, he opted out of his daily run and instead selected to spend those days actually working on school work. Grades were important to him, but only so much. Only so much as to keep his mother happy. He desperately wanted to make sure she was proud of him. He was going into professional Quidditch, he didn’t need to have good grades in potions class to be able to play Quidditch.
The man sat down in the library, at a wooden table by a window. He set his books out in front of him with the aim of getting as much work as possible done today so that he didn’t have to worry about it for the next few days at least. He rarely did homework if he could help it. He did what was necessary to get him passing grades.

The library was a quiet place for Peyton, a home away from her common room and the noise that came from those that snored. It was also the best place to find her in if she wasn’t in class or outside enjoying the weather. Most of her time at Hogwarts seemed to be spent here, lost in homework or even books. So, there she was, heading for the library because she needed to look into some books. She could hear the rain hitting the windows, and she held with a smile, she loved the sound of rain, loved the smell of it even. But she hated the sick and wetness that came with it; she had already had to endure it once when she was caught in the rain just the other day, she wasn’t about to do so again. Quickly she grabbed the books that she needed off the shelf once she entered, and found a spot just a little bit away from someone that looked much older than she and across from him. They sat at a weird angle, but she didn’t mind, she was going to be working on assignments just as he would be. No conversation, nothing would happen, so why should she have to worry about where she sat. But from a quick glance, she recognized him. Or at least, she thought she did. She knew that he wasn’t in her house nor of her year, but she knew him from somewhere. She shrugged it off and got to her assignment, pulling out her quill, the ink, and the parchment paper. As she read the assignment and the book that correspond to it, she twirled the quill around her finger.

Sav looked up from his book as a girl came up to his table and took the chair across from him. He didn’t mind her doing so, of course, he had just gotten a little distracted by her approach. She looked familiar, but vaguely so. Maybe she just looked like someone that he knew? Maybe she was the sibling of someone… but who? Oh, she looked vaguely similar to the young Hufflepuff girl he had helped the other day when she fell down the stairs on the main floor, the one carrying the violin and who was more concerned with her instrument than her own injuries. She had ended up being fine in the end, and he liked to think it was all thanks to his being there. “So what are you working on?” he asked the girl across the table from him. He hated homework. And any distraction was a good distraction. However, he didn’t want to distract the girl either, especially if she was really trying to get work done.

‘So what are you working on?’The sound of the voice made her glance up, noticing now that the older guy was addressing her instead of his work. She smiled at him, some people would think she is a nerd or overachiever, but really, she was just her. “Just a paper that’s due next week,” she said with a shrug of her shoulders. “I like to get a head start on things, just in case I’ve done it wrong, I have time to fix it.” Those words were added to the conversation with a small, shy smile as if she were preparing for him to laugh at her for getting a head start. Maybe he wouldn’t, but one could never be too careful. “What about you? What’s brought you to the library?”She hoped that he wasn’t being distracted by her questions, though he was the one that had started the conversation. There were plenty of students that waited until the last minute to do assignments, and she hoped that this wasn’t the case. She’d feel super guilty if she was the reason that he wouldn’t be doing his work. “I’m Peyton, Peyton Bainbridge,” she said introducing herself with a smile, she didn’t want to be rude by not revealing her name.

She was working on a paper that was due next week in one of her classes. He could barely remember the last time he had done a paper so far in advance. “Good on you, I wish I was more like that.” he admitted honestly. He admired people who took their academics seriously. He was never one of those people and knew he never would be. He’d leave that to his twin. Sav was the athletic one, his brother could be the smart one. She asked what brought him to the library and he shrugged, “Well it’s not fun to be outside in the rain so I figured I’d exercise my brain instead.” he didn’t really mean it, but he was trying. And he knew that at least being seen in the library would make his mom, the Head of Gryffindor house, happy. She had introduced herself as Peyton Bainbridge. “Ahh, that makes sense. I met your sister, I think, earlier this week. Penelope?” he hoped that he was remembering the girls name correctly. “I’m Sav MacMillian.” he introduced himself as well.

‘Good on you, I wish I was more like that.’Peyton smiled somewhat shyly as she looked down at her nails, she could tell that his words held an honest tint to them, but that still didn’t hold to her that she felt a bit embarrassed. There were very few in Hogwarts that probably wrote their essays a week in advance, and from the sounds of it, this young man didn’t either. He was quick to add that it was not fun outside and he decided to exercise his brain, she smiled even brighter and let out a small laugh. “Exercising one’s brain, can be either taken as rather boring or— it does sound rather boring when said out loud,” she breathed out in a small amused and timid tone. ‘Ahh, that makes sense. I met your sister, I think, earlier this week. Penelope? I’m Sav MacMillian.’She smiled, “Yes, Penelope is one of my younger sister,” she said before nodding her head. “It’s nice to meet you Sav” The words came out with a smile, “So are you and my sister friends? I don’t think she’s ever mentioned befriending someone named Sav,” she said rather awkwardly.

Sav hoped that she didn’t feel too weird when he said he wished that he was more like that. He admired people that put importance into their studies. Everyone had something that they were good at. Some people were like him and better at athletics than school and some people were the opposite. Some people weren’t good at either and rather were good at art or cooking, or whatever. Sav kind of hated how there weren’t programs in school for those types of people rather than just academics. Sure, there were clubs and there were house Quidditch teams, but, everyone was required to take part in the academics even if it wasn’t their strong suit. Oh well, he was in no mood to try and fight the establishment anytime soon. “Yeah it’s as boring as it sounds.” the Gryffindor insisted. The blonde agreed that Penelope was one of her sisters and Sav nodded. She then asked if the two of them were friends and Sav wasn’t entirely sure how to answer, “No, not really friends in the general meaning of the word. She, uh, she just tripped down some stairs the other day and I stopped and helped her and made sure she was alright.” he told her. He had never seen the girl before that day, and he wasn’t sure if he would see her again, but Sav had been feeling extra-brotherly lately, especially after having finally given into the fact that his sisters existed and wanted to make sure the girl was alright.

Peyton had never seen her extracurricular activities of studying and doing homework in advance as anything boring. She loved doing it and then using the free time when people were crunching to be used for reading or exploring. As he insisted that it was as dull as she sounds, she scrunched up her nose and slightly nodded her head in agreement. God, she must seem like an overachiever, but it was just her personality, she couldn’t help it. Luckily for her, the conversation was quickly thrown back into gear by him saying that he wasn’t friends, or at least, not yet. She smiled as he immediately told her that she tripped on the steps, and she almost laughed. “That sounds like Penelope,” she breathed out in a slightly amused tone, she’d have to check on her sister and bring it up. “I’m glad that there was someone there to help her,” she quickly stated with a smile on her face, “She probably needed that, she must have been so embarrassed,” she concluded. It was true if Penelope didn’t have one of her sisters to make sure that she was okay when she fell, she was glad that there were some nice people still out there. There were some that would have laughed and made it worse, some that would have kicked her while she was down (most likely figuratively), and then there were a few nice people left in the world. It meant that faith in humanity was restored until someone messed that up again.

Sav didn’t necessarily feel like a hero for helping the small, blonde Hufflepuff. It was just the right thing to do and he always tried to do the right thing, he supposed it was why he found himself a member of Gryffindor house. If he saw someone fall and no one else took notice, he wasn’t just going to let them be and continue walking past. Everyone needed someone to stop and check on them, no one should be made to feel unimportant or invisible. “Yeah, she seemed to be a bit more concerned with her violin’s well being then her own, she didn’t even check to see if she got hurt until after she had made sure her instrument was okay.” Sav said with a small laugh and smile. He wasn’t making fun of the girl at all, if he had fallen and dropped his broom, he also would check on his broom first before checking on himself. “But Bainbridge, right? You’ve got another sister too, don’t you? I think there’s a Ravenclaw girl in some of my classes.” he admitted, talking about Kinsey but having her name escaped him. And he knew of her brother too from before he graduated, since they had both played Quidditch, but that fact escaped him also.

Peyton had always been protective of her younger sisters, especially with Sephy. So, she was happy to know that there were other people out there, not just her other siblings, that were willing to take the extra mile and watch out for those around her. Learning that Savtaj had helped out her sister, well it meant a lot to her. And probably a lot to the other blonde as well, though, when she learned that her sister was more concerned with her violin she wanted to laugh. That sounded like Penelope, worrying about an instrument over herself. The moment that Sav laughed and smiled, after telling her that she didn’t even check to see if she had gotten hurt before her violin was checked, she let out a small chuckle. She’d have to bring this up to Pen later. “Well—I’m still glad someone was there to help her out, even if she wanted to protect her violin first,” she said with a smile and a sincere tone to her voice. Then, he repeated her last name, and she nodded her head in confirmation. It was then that he mentioned another sister, “I have a ton of sisters. Five to be exact…so you’ll have to be—” she stopped her spiel as Sav mentioned a Ravenclaw girl and instantly she knew who it was. “You mean Kinsey? Yeah, she’s my sister,” she said with a smile on her face. “I guess you know her as well?”

Did he know Kinsey? Well, not really, he supposed. “No, I don’t really know her, we’re just in classes together.” he knew her in the way that someone would know anyone in their same year. They weren’t in the same house, if they had any mutual friends it was unknown to him, but he did see her in their lessons regularly. Sav found himself falling incredibly bored. He didn’t really want to be in the library studying anyone. The year was drawing to a close and it wasn’t like the exams that he was going to take were going to affect much. It wasn’t his NEWT year yet. So why he was working on his studies instead of hanging out and socializing somewhere, whether or not it was raining outside, got him feeling a bit restless. “So… you got any idea what you want to do when you graduate?” he asked, making small talk because he was bored and wanted to distract himself from studying. He hadn’t really thought that he might also be distracting her.

After asking the simple question if Savtaj knew her sister, Kinsey, it was revealed that he didn’t know her. It was more like he knew her name by the fact that they have classes together, and Peyton found herself nodding her head in understanding. There were a bunch of people she knew the name of, but she had never talked to them personally, it was the same thing in her opinion. She smiled, “I understand,” she said quickly, not wanting to silence to bring awkwardness between the two students. But he made sure it didn’t, allowing another question to pierce the air. What she wanted to be after she graduated. She shrugged her shoulders, “I’m not sure. I have two more years to decide…though I want to do something that deals with charms, or maybe even magical creatures…” she said before directing the question towards him, “What about you?” She was always told it was awkward to direct the same question towards someone else after you had already answered it unless of course, you were asking how someone was on that fine day, but she saw no harm in it. They were having small talk and making the awkward silence stay away as it threatened to descend upon them, at least in her mind, then it would have to do.

She seemed to not know how to answer sav’s question about what she wanted to do with her life after hogwarts and that was fair enough. She was younger than he was and didn’t really have to know yet. He knew, of course, that he wanted to play Quidditch. He had known since he was a young child. Since his dad took him and his twin brother to their very first professional game. He was hooked. And he was in line for captain next year so he would be almost guaranteed a position on a professional team after graduation. So long as he didn’t do anything stupid to mess up his career or injure himself in a way that the healers couldn’t fix. He needed to lead his team well, whether or not they won, and if he did so, he’d be golden. “Creatures could be fun, I’m sure. So long as you’ve got the knack for them.” he said with a quiet laugh. He had never been good with creatures. The class bored him. “I’m Quidditch bound.” he admitted. “Not sure what team yet, but I’ll be a beater on one of them the year after next.” he added. He was pretty confident in his abilities, and especially in his strength and endurance. He’d get recruited no problem.

Peyton had never really thought about her life after Hogwarts before, and since she was always so far away from graduation, she never really saw the need to do so. But the moment that Savtaj mentioned it, she realized, she wasn’t that far away. Next year she’d be in sixth year and then she’d be a seventh, after that she’d be an adult and thrown into the world. Maybe it was time to start thinking, or maybe she’d just leave that for now. She bit her bottom lip, just as Savtaj mentioned that creatures could be fun, as long as you had a knack for them that was, and she nodded her head. It was true, you had to have a certain skill for them, and while she had taken the class and such, that didn’t mean much in that regard. It was then that he answered her question, telling her that he was bound for Quidditch, though he didn’t know what team he’d be a part of yet, he just knows that he’ll be a beater for one of them the year after next. She smiled, “That’s exciting, I never really got into Quidditch, but it seems like an interesting sport to be a part of. Are there any teams you are leaning towards? Or do you not know yet?”

The young blonde asked if there were any teams he was looking into and he shrugged. “I mean Puddlemere United is pretty great. And the Falmouth Falcons. But really it depends on what team has an opening the season I graduate and which want me.” he admitted. He wasn’t too worried about it, especially since he knew that it wasn’t uncommon for players to switch teams or be traded. Savtaj saw a familiar figure appear at the door across the library. Hugo Weasley stuck his face into the entrance and his eyes locked on the MacMillian boy. As soon as Hugo was confident that Sav saw him, he started motioning Sav to come with him, obviously the young man was up to something and needed the help of his best friend. Sav closed his books. “Hey. I’ve gotta go. It was nice talking to you Peyton. I’ll see you around.” he didn’t want to seem rude by just taking off, but he couldn’t leave Hugo hanging there not knowing what he was up to. Sav collected his things and hurriedly threw them into his bag, throwing it over his shoulder and then jogging out of the library, trying not to get caught and scolded by the librarian.
