Lina knew that it was absolutely pouring down outside, which is why she had chosen to dress a little bit differently than she was used to today. Still very stylish but just slightly different than she usually did. She didn't want to get her best dresses wet so she needed to wear something that would get her through the rain. It was Hogsmeade trip this weekend and she'd really wanted to attend it because, if school had its way, it would probably be one of the last ones she would be able to attend before she graduated. She was really trying to buckle down with her studying; time was winding down and N.E.W.T.s would be here soon and she needed to make sure that her marks were impeccable. The Ministry would take notice of her, she had no doubt, but her scores could be just the thing to put her over the top.
If she was being honest with herself, she'd been a little bit distracted anyway. By thoughts of a certain blonde Hufflepuff. And for more reasons than one. They'd both been rather busy with their respective studying, Jamie more than she because Jamie was in a maddening number of classes. So in attempt to get her to take a break from her crazy studying schedule, and as a not-so-secret plan to spend time with her, Liona had invited her to Hogsmeade with her this weekend. Liona had actually wanted to talk to her about something she'd been thinking about for a little while now too. Simply put, Liona wanted to know.. what were they. Where did they stand? She'd run into Andromeda Lestrange and Molly Weasley, her best friend and a mutual friend of theirs, and she hadn't told either of them about the two of them. It wasn't really a big deal to Liona, if she didn't want to tell them, that was fine. But Jamie had said in their letters once that she didn't tell anyone about her romantic going-ons unless they were serious. Liona didn't mind living in ambiguity at times. She just knew that Jamie, for the most part, didn't. Thus the question.
Liona stood in the Entrance Hall, umbrella in hand, as she waited patiently for her to make an appearance. There were a few people already heading out the door to the little village and she waved and smiled at a few people she liked enough to do so but soon after she went back to her waiting.

It was a Hogsmeade weekend, which, to Jamie, meant that it was her one weekend free from studying. Jamie relished the time that she got to spend away from the school, because in addition to being her time away from her schoolwork, it was also the time when she got to see her elder siblings and spend uninterrupted time with her other friends. And Liona. It was difficult to consider Liona a friend, because Jamie didn’t think about kissing her friends incessantly when she was supposed to be doing other things. Jamie was hoping that soon they could put a label on what they had, because Jamie wanted to tell people – most notably her sisters – about what was happening in her life, and she didn’t know how to do that when she didn’t have the words for her relationship with Liona. The Hufflepuff was bundled up in a waterproof cloak, though her hood wasn’t up. Jamie knew that it was raining, but she had a peculiar fondness for the rain, and didn’t mind getting soaked. That was why she was slightly perplexed when she walked up to Liona, and saw the other girl holding onto an umbrella. “Why do you need that?” Jamie asked, smiling brightly – it wasn’t a question meant to insult or call Liona’s intelligence into question, but rather a question because Jamie forgot that it wasn’t necessarily normal to enjoy the feeling of being pelted by rain. No matter the reason, the question had been asked, and Jamie waited patiently for an answer, grin still on her face.

Liona waited patiently until she noticed the Hufflepuff walking her way and a small smile made an immediate appearance on her face. She noticed that the girl was dressed up in a rain cloak that covered enough of her clothing but she had nothing else. She wasn't holding on to an umbrella like she was. Maybe they just prepared for the rain differently, which made sense to her. When Jamie approached, her smile was bright and beautiful and it made Liona's smile grow much brighter. The first words that left Jamie's mouth made Liona chuckle, they weren't quite what she was expecting. She questioned why the Slytherin held an umbrella in her hand. "It is a short explanation that might turn into a much longer explanation but simply put, I worry about my hair. It should be fine but the umbrella is plan B if it's raining too hard," she explained with a shrug. She didn't really have the time to go through the process of her personal hair care. She'd learned a few tips over the summer from her normal hairstylist to keep it from getting too frizzy when it was in braids, to especially protect it from the rain and what to do after it rained, so she would be fine. Raining too hard was relative though for her depending on the day. "Shall we get going? Because I'm certain that you need this break more than I do," she teased her lightly before holding her hand out in front of her in a bid for Jamie to go ahead of her. She hadn't a clue where they would start in Hogsmeade; there wasn't a lot to do in Liona's opinion but maybe she would find more to do with Jamie as company.

Jamie frowned when Liona said that she had the umbrella because she worried about her hair. It was a valid worry, of course, but it was a little sad that something like that could keep Liona from enjoying the rain in its full glory. Liona asked if they should get going, and Jamie nodded, though she wasn’t sure how much she agreed with her needing a break more than Liona did. The Slytherin had different ambitions than the Hufflepuff did – while Jamie would love to score well on her N.E.W.T.s, her career plan didn’t depend on it the way that most other students’ did. Jamie reached her hand out for Liona’s free one before pushing through the doors and out into the rain. Jamie took a slow, deep breath, stopping in the middle of the pathway and simply letting everything else flow around her. She had had a mild fear of the Hogwarts grounds ever since accidentally biting another student, but it was less scary when it was raining. Jamie glanced over at Liona. “I guess we shouldn’t linger outside, if you’re worried about your hair.” Jamie lamented. She would rather stay outside for the rest of the day, but she didn’t want to do that at Liona’s expense. The Hufflepuff took one more deep breath of the cool, rain-scrubbed air, before beginning to walk again, at a slower pace than was normal for her. Even if she didn’t want to make Liona’s hair suffer, Jamie couldn’t resist the extra minute or two that slowing down would give her.

After her suggestion, Liona waited for Jamie to walk off in front of her and found herself surprised, honestly surprised, when Jamie reached out and grabbed her hand. She didn't know why she was surprised; it showed on her face for just a moment before she broke out in a small smile. She wasn't sure. Maybe it was just the part of her that worried about Jamie deciding that she only wanted to be friends. Maybe it was the uncertainty she'd held in, worried that at any point in time Jamie could call everything off after remembering that Liona wasn't always nice and not wanting to deal with it any more. She already felt too close to Jamie, liked her too much. And to think that could all end with just a word. Liona cleared her mind and followed Jamie out of the doors. She had been anticipating the rain; she'd figured that it was still rolling down in hard droplets. When she stepped out though she felt light cool droplets through the arms of her rain coat. It wasn't too bad out so she didn't have much to worry about. She noticed that Jamie had paused, taking in the weather and she smiled a bit to herself. "Favorite type of weather?" she asked suddenly, not quite remembering if that was one of the questions they'd covered in their letters. Jamie then mentioned that they shouldn't linger and Liona shook her head. "It's not as bad as I expected so I'm fine for now. And that's what I have the umbrella for anyway," she picked the umbrella up and shook it a little as she spoke. They started walking again, at a slow pace that calmed the storm raging inside her. "So have you heard back from the Harpies about your position on the team?" she asked curiously.

Liona asked what her favorite type of weather was, and Jamie smiled. “Rain.” As if that wasn’t obvious already. “I like thunderstorms, but those aren’t common around here.” Jamie said. There was a part of her that was also deeply afraid of thunderstorms, and Jamie wondered if that had something to do with the wolf or if it was just a character quirk that she both liked and feared storms. She was leaning towards the latter, but the wolf was a possible explanation for just about everything, so Jamie didn’t want to rule it out yet. “You?” Jamie asked in return. Since Liona had the umbrella she guessed it wasn’t the rain, but that still left a plethora of other weather patterns to consider. Liona said that the rain wasn’t that bad, and the Hufflepuff smiled, enjoying the coolness of the raindrops on her cheeks as they continued to meander along.
Jamie paused at the question about the Harpies. She hadn’t told anyone yet that she had received her official offer, mostly because she kept waiting for the team to change her mind. And no one else had asked her since the owl had arrived with the rough details of her contract, so Jamie hadn’t had to tell anyone about it, either. She didn’t want to lie to Liona, though, even by omission, so slowly, the Hufflepuff nodded. “I have an offer to join the team next year.” Saying it felt extremely overwhelming, so Jamie did what she did best – looked at her feet and tried not to feel too awkward about everything.

Liona smiled when Jamie answered because her answer had been obvious. Just the way she reacted to walking outside had told her that rain had been her favorite. Liona had only wanted to make her smile. The Hufflepuff added in that she liked thunderstorms best and she agreed that they didn't get them too often in their area. Heavy rain fall was pretty common during that time of year but thunderstorms didn't come as often. Liona thought about it for a moment when Jamie asked her the same question. "Sunny. I like sunshine but I'm not a fan of the heat." Her favorite days were when it was sunny out but there was a cool breeze to balance out the heat from the sun. Those were days when it was the perfect temperature out and she was able to sit in the sun for as long as she wanted.
Liona waited patiently for Jamie to answer her question about the Harpies. It had been something she had been thinking about recently as well because she knew how much the Hufflepuff had wanted to be on the team. When the answer finally came, it was in the form of a slow, hesitant nod with accompanying words that sounded equally as hesitant as the nod. The blonde then proceeded to look downwards towards her feet and didn't say anything further. "Are you going to take it?" she asked, keeping any tone of interrogation out of her voice but she was rather curious about her hesitance. Liona expected her to be excited or, at the very least, pleased that she had received the offer. Or was she second guessing herself? "Do you want to talk about it?"

Jamie couldn’t help but smirk when Liona said that she liked sunshine, but she wasn’t a fan of the heat. “Sounds like you’re in a bit of a predicament.” She commented. It was true that there were times it was sunny but not hot – the winter days that were so bright they scalded Jamie’s eyes were good examples of that – but for most of the year, excessive sun did mean excessive heat, so Liona was out of luck.
The subject of Quidditch was still hanging heavy in the air – well, heavy for Jamie. She assumed that Liona didn’t sense the tension, or at least didn’t feel it as acutely as Jamie did. The Hufflepuff took a long, deep breath. “I can’t not take it, can I?” Jamie asked with a nervous laugh when Liona asked if she was going to take the offer. Jamie knew that turning the contract down was an option – people did it all the time, especially if they got more than one contract offer – but it definitely didn’t feel like an option. Liona asked if she wanted to talk about it, and Jamie didn’t hesitate before nodding again. “You’re the only person I’ve told.” Jamie blurted out. The news had come so recently, and she hadn’t wanted her first announcement to come over owl, and she knew that Liona cared what she had to say… so here they were. “You know, the past year has kind of sucked. My sister lost a baby and my other sister tried to kill herself and my brother ran away, and… all of this bad stuff has happened, and I don’t know how to react now that something good is finally happening.” Jamie could handle the day-to-day good things, because those hadn’t ever stopped, even when there were majorly bad things happening. But something this big, and this good, happening to her, felt… wrong.

Liona mirrored Jamie's smirk when she spoke. She knew that sun usually meant heat but in the Spring and Fall times she had a little more luck. She liked the Fall a bit better because Fall had better fashion than Spring did though Spring came with better colors. The thought that flowed into her head immediately after Jamie spoke had Liona's eyes flooding with amusement. With all of her comparisons of Jamie to the sun in their letters, she figured she could bring that up again. Jamie was her own personal sun with just enough warmth as to not make her uncomfortable. The line came off decidedly banal in her head so she kept her amusement to herself. "Yes. They're rare, but that's what makes them my favorite."
The Slytherin was slightly confused by the question that Jamie posed regarding her Harpies offer. Of course she didn't have to take it, there was always a choice in the matter. From what Liona understood though, Jamie had been waiting on this offer. It was something she'd been hoping for and something she'd wanted to happen to her. She wanted to play Quidditch for a professional team, so just as she'd expected, her question only left Liona more curious. The Hufflepuff then blurted out that Liona was the first person she'd told about her offer. A small smile appeared on her face and she gave a light squeeze to Jamie's hand in support, almost in thanks. It made her feel important that she'd shared something that was so important to her first. When Jamie continued to explain her thinking, Liona stayed silent and didn't allow any of her surprise to show on her face, she only nodded appropriately to show that she was still listening. She hand't realized that her and her family had been through so much. From finding out that they all had siblings they didn't know about to all of the things she described? There was no wonder why the Hufflepuff felt overwhelmed. "Be greedy." Liona answered simply after a few minutes of thinking about it. "Be greedy and take it and be happy about it." The answer seemed simple in her head but maybe that was because she didn't experience a lot of hardship in her own life. Sure, she went through her ups and downs but she couldn't think of anything that weighed as heavily on her. "What I mean is, it's okay to be happy about something after so much bad. It's okay to want to be happy about something after so much bad. I guess we can only hope that things won't always be bad when they're bad. It's okay to want and hope for something good," Liona replied, taking her free hand and lightly brushing it over the hand she held in comfort.

Jamie nodded when Liona said that the rarity of not-hot sunny days was what made them beautiful, though the Hufflepuff couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. “Are things only beautiful because they’re uncommon?” She asked. Some of the things that Jamie found most beautiful – sunrises, laughter, light glimmering in the eyes of the people she loved, biting into a fresh fruit – happened every day, if not more often. The fact they were common didn’t make them any less special. Maybe, Jamie thought, it was the fact that Liona was a pureblood that made her associate something’s uncommonness with its value. Jamie didn’t know much about the pureblood lifestyle, but it did seem to be a lot about accruing material goods – large manors and family heirlooms made of precious metals and gemstones and all other manner of expensive things. Maybe she was being unfair in that assumption, Jamie thought; she needed to actually give time for Liona to answer the question before trying to answer it for her.
Liona nodded all throughout Jamie’s mini-tirade, and if she was honest, she wasn’t sure if her – why did she still not have a word for Liona? – well, if the Slytherin would actually say something or just give a vague half-answer about how Jamie ought to do whatever her heart was telling her to do. Liona’s answer was much more direct than Jamie had expected it to be, even though it had taken the other girl a while to formulate it. What Liona’s answer boiled down to was that the Hufflepuff didn’t need to feel guilty for her own happiness, and after a moment considering it, Jamie sighed a little, letting her shoulders sag in relief. “Thank you.” She said softly. Jamie hadn’t realized until Liona had said it that she was seeking permission to be okay with the turn of events – no, to be more than okay with this turn of events. Jamie wanted permission to be happy. Then, because she had already decided to accept the good things life was giving her, the blonde turned to her dark-haired companion, looking her full in the face. “I want you to be my girlfriend.” Jamie said, surprising herself a little with how bluntly that had come off. “I mean… you said that I should want and hope for good things. And you… you are good.” Sure, their relationship hadn’t started on the best foot, but if there was one thing Jamie was sure of, it was that Liona was someone who was willing to change and grow. That was what Jamie wanted out of a relationship that was poised to continue outside of Hogwarts – the ability to grow together, and face the world together. She wanted that, and she wanted it with Liona.

"Not quite," she began, thinking back to previous days when it had been her perfect preferred weather. Just thinking about it made her want to feel the warmth of the sun on her skin again. "They're beautiful because I like the feel of the sun. The fact that they're uncommon, though, means that they're unexpected and that usually makes my day more pleasant. Similar to your smile when you stepped out here." Her last words were said on a smile; Jamie had looked exhilarated the moment she'd stepped out into the rain. Liona loved stepping out into the sunshine, without feeling too hot, and enjoying the gentle rays that came with it. She liked being surprised with lovely days, and they usually did come as a surprise. She didn't follow the weather close enough to know exactly what was coming but when they did come, those rare days of perfect weather, her days were always equally as perfect.
Liona heard Jamie sigh after a while; everything she'd been holding in must have been a physical weight on her because tension left her body and she seemed much more relaxed than she had been before. There was a difference in her since she'd begun talking about it and she must have really needed to hear those words. The Hufflepuff thanked her then and, though Liona didn't think the thank you necessary, she smiled and gave a nod. Liona then felt herself being pulled to a stop and she turned to the blonde with a questioning look on her face. Her eyes widened a bit at Jamie's words. Hadn't that been what she'd wanted to know? "Yes." she said, trying not to leave any pause between the blonde's question and her answer though her shock made her momentarily unable to answer. She hadn't expected her to be so forward about it. There had just been so much between them before and she hadn't know how they would surmount that, if Jamie would even want to. "Yes," she broke out into a beaming smile and she grabbed Jamie's other hand with her free one. "I want to be your girlfriend. Yes. I want to make you happy and be good for you." She felt her heart beating fast like all of those times she'd been waiting for her letters to arrive. And again when she'd been waiting to meet her. "I really like you Jamie Greyback and I would love to be your girlfriend." This was a little bit different though. She was here and she was looking at her and she asked. She wanted her too.

If Liona’s goal with her little speech was to make Jamie smile, then she had succeeded, because that same smile that the Slytherin had mentioned sprang right back on her face at the compliment. “I don’t think that my smiles are quite so rare.” Especially not when she was round people that she liked… like Liona. It was true that there were times when Jamie wasn’t grinning, but she liked to think that she had a resting happy face, because really, as long as she wasn’t sad, Jamie was happy. There wasn’t really a neutral emotion in Jamie-land.
The response to Jamie’s inquiry about whether or not Liona would be her girlfriend was almost instantaneous, and the Hufflepuff wondered if the Slytherin had been waiting for her to ask, or if she was just that sure about where she wanted their relationship to go. Jamie found herself thinking that she wouldn’t mind either of those scenarios, because in the end, it still meant that Liona wanted to be with her, and that was… amazing. Jamie was certain in thinking that she had never had a relationship like hers with Liona. Harper and Will had both challenged her in a way, but Jamie knew that being with the Slytherin was going to be immensely different from being with either of the Gryffindors that she had once cared for. And that was good – brilliant, even. “I really like you, too, Liona Zabini.” Jamie said with a shy smile. As if it had been waiting for the cue, the sky opened up. The light drizzle became a sudden downpour, and Jamie couldn’t help it – she laughed like a madwoman. It felt like a benediction and a blessing, the very earth and sky agreeing that Jamie and Liona ought to be together by giving Jamie her favorite thing. Jamie let go of Liona’s hands to pull the other girl close, resting their foreheads together as she snaked her arms around Liona’s waist. “You might have to get more used to being out in the rain if you want this relationship to work.” Jamie whispered teasingly, half-waiting for Liona to ask to go inside or put up her umbrella. Jamie just didn’t want this moment to end.

Jamie's smile immediately made a grin appear on Liona's face even though she looked forward in the direction they were walking in. No, her smile wasn't rare, she didn't think it was anyway. But when Jamie was around her, her smile was unexpected. Liona didn't have low self-esteem by any means, quite the opposite actually. However, she hadn't been anything but realistic about their relationship and she knew that this could go back to eggshells at the drop of a dime. Jamie could decide she wanted out at any moment and there would be nothing Liona could do about it. It wasn't something she tried to think about often but sometimes it was there, at the back of her mind.
Jamie repeated her sentiment, with a soft smile on her face and Liona breathed the words in deep just as the clouds cracked open and decided to rain down upon the two of them. Liona sucked in a deep breath as the cold seeped into her scalp and dripped onto her rain coat. Even though she had the coat on she still felt like she was getting wet and she wanted to open her umbrella but she didn't want to let go of Jamie's hands. And she heard the laugh that Jamie let out and a small smile broke out on her face and the Hufflepuff let go of her hands, Liona expecting her to take in the rain fully. Instead, Jamie wrapped her arms around her, pulling her close enough that their foreheads touched and Liona didn't look away. She said something about her having to get used to the rain and Liona felt herself focusing on just how wet her hair was getting then but she chuckled lightly anyway. She closed the few inches between them and pressed a kiss on Jamie's lips. It wasn't long, just a two second peck before she pulled back into their previous position and the warmth from Jamie fighting the chill of the rain. "If it means being able to be like this with you, I have zero qualms about it," amusement lit up her face as she said the words. She knew the frizz was going to be bad later but she could enjoy this moment with Jamie. She'd asked her to be her girlfriend. She wanted this with her. She wanted to be with her. Her head was spinning but she was happy just at the fact Jamie had asked her.

Liona pecked her lips, which had definitely been what Jamie had been going for when she had pulled her girlfriend – her girlfriend! – in so close. She hadn’t wanted to seem too forward, but the great thing about Liona was that she didn’t seem to care too much about being forward, despite having an acute awareness of social norms. The warmth from Liona’s body helped to chase away the slight chill of the rain, and Jamie’s cheeks were beginning to ache from smiling so hard. She had wanted this, but she hadn’t allowed herself to realize just how much she wanted it until she had it. It was a great way to save herself from disappointment, Jamie supposed, but now she was dizzy with the feeling of having the Slytherin girl so close to her. Liona made a comment about the rain, but if she was honest, Jamie didn’t hear it over the thudding of her heart in her ears, because she had gotten an idea that seemed a bit dangerous. “Do you want to dance with me?” Jamie asked quietly. Their previous attempts at dancing had been awkward, to say the least, but most of that was Jamie’s fault. For someone who didn’t know how to dance, she did seem to be doing a lot of it, though, and Jamie figured that she might as well embrace her fate. Besides, it just felt right to be here with Liona, and to dance in the rain. The storms had passed, but the rain remained, and now they could just celebrate that they had survived it.

The way Jamie was smiling so hard was pulling her in but everything about Jamie pulled her in and made her not want to leave. Even if the rain was pelting down on her, she didn't want to go. Even if the icy touch in the droplets was pushing her away, Jamie's warmth was keeping her rooted in the position she was in. Jamie grew quiet for just a moment before asking her if she wanted to dance. Any onlookers were sure to be confused by the sight of them already, standing in the rain, heads together and holding on to one another as if it wasn't raining like it. Dancing in it would make them look mad. Liona smirked then, amusement clear in her eyes. It seemed dancing was going to become their thing. It was different this time though in more ways than one. This time it wouldn't be because they needed to fill the awkward silences and this time wouldn't be because it was just the thing to do. It was because it was purely because it was what she wanted to do. "I don't think I'll ever say no to dancing with you," she laughed just before wrapping an arm around her waist and holding one out to grasp her hand. "Can I lead this time?" she asked. There was no music in the way the rain fell, not to Liona anyway, but there was music in the way her heart was singing in her ears, in the way Jamie smiled at her, and the way kissing her felt. That was what she danced to, once the blonde took her hand. The happiness she felt. She swayed with her in the rain, leading her in a slow and simple dance not unlike how they danced in the Room of Requirement.
