Rosie agreed about dating someone who was less than wonderful, and Sander offered her a tentative smile at that. The more he thought about it, the less sense his original statement made, since people really only dated people they liked – or at least, that was what Sander thought happened. Rosie explained that she was dating Brandon Fisher, and her reason for crying suddenly made sense. He had been listed in the paper as one of the people who had survived the Durmstrang explosion. At least, Sander thought, he had survived – he was sure Rosie would be doing much worse if Brandon had died. Rosie explained that she and Brandon had been together for a few months, and that he was sweet and great and… wrote her a song? “Do all girls expect songs?” Sander asked. He had a decent voice, but he was no songbird, and he definitely couldn’t write a song of his own to play for Susan. If that was the expected behavior, then he was going to need to start taking music lessons – and also figure out how on earth he could become more creative.

While Rosie had said a lot, Sander responded with very little, which was fair since not everything that Rosie said required response. Rosie had a tendency to talk just for the sake of talking, she was known to ramble on, especially when she was sad or uncomfortable or got nervous or awkward. Lysander asked if all girls expect people to write them songs and Rosie shrugged, she wasn’t exactly the person on which to judge what most girls wanted. She was 18 years old and Brandon was her first boyfriend and her first kiss. Rosie hadn’t even really thought about boys or dating anyone until earlier this year. She hadn’t been expecting to develop a crush on the boy that used to be her best friend, and she really hadn’t expected him to ask her out when he came to see her in the Hospital wing in March. If she hadn’t been expecting either of those, then there was no way she had expected him to write her a song. She knew that he played guitar and loved music, but she hadn’t expected to inspire anything. “I don’t think so. But I think most girls would welcome it. It was a really sweet gesture.” Rosie shrugged again, not wanting to put unnecessary pressure of Sander to write Susan a song when Rosie really didn’t know what the norm even was.

Rosie said that most girls didn’t expect songs, which was a step in the right direction. She said too that girls would welcome it, though, which left Sander at a bit of an impasse. But it seemed like Rosie was focused more on there being a gesture of affection than what that particular gesture was, so maybe there was something to be done with that? “I don’t know much about dating someone.” Sander said with a sigh. He had had an almost-something in his sixth year, but it had never really progressed more than a mutual crush, which meant he didn’t have anything to compare to his relationship with Susan, or anything from which to learn. He was beginning to realize just how helpless he was – he needed a relationship guru, someone who would tell him when he was doing something horrible wrong. Sander didn’t want to burden Rosie with a role like that, though, especially since it seemed like she was having a pretty hard time of things. Adding another responsibility on her shoulders would just be rude… which mean that Sander needed to start making friends so they could give him relationship advice. That was only slightly better than learning how to play music as far as ease.

Lysander admitted that he didn’t know very much about dating someone and Rosie nodded her head slowly. She didn’t either, and she was pretty sure that he already knew that, or at least, was getting that vibe from what she was saying and based on the fact that she didn’t know whether or not all girls expected songs. Maybe they did, for all she knew, maybe singing to a girl was a normal way of courting them. She had just figured that because Brandon was musical, that was just his way of expressing his own feelings. But she didn’t want to give Lysander any bad advice. Honestly, Rosie wasn’t sure that she was ever the person who should be giving any advice. What did she know about life? “There should have been a class on it - or a book at least.” she admitted with a small, breathy laugh that could easily have been interpreted as a sigh. There probably was a book, but Rosie would never have gone in search of it, She would have been embarrassed to be seen with it. Rosie couldn’t help but think that Susan couldn’t be an expert on dating either, but, that probably wasn’t a way in which Lysander wanted to think about their situation, that neither of them knew what to do; so she wasn’t going to bring it up. "I'm sure it'll come naturally eventually." It had got so much easier with her and Brandon, and Rosie really felt like it was just the time it took for them to begin getting to know each other in that way.

Rosie said there should have been a class on dating someone, and Sander made a soft snorting noise. That might have been a little excessive. A book, perhaps, could work. “I think it’s difficult because every situation is unique.” He told her. Sander had spent the majority of his life under the impression that whomever he would fall in love with would be a male. But then Susan had crashed into his life, and he had had to change everything that he thought. That was part of the reason it had taken so long for anything to happen. Sander didn’t mean to be self-centered, but he was fairly certain not many of his classmates thought they were gay only to find themselves in love with someone of the opposite sex. The opposite case (that they thought themselves straight until finding someone of the same gender that they were romantically compatible with) was probably more common. A book couldn’t possibly cover all of the iterations of romance. Maybe it was more about setting ground rules – how to take care of yourself before entering in a relationship with someone else. “Or maybe it will continue to be work, but the work will be worthwhile.” He responded. For all of his fretting over his relationship with Susan, Sander knew that he would pick the uncertainty of being in a relationship with her over being alone, because she made him happy.

“Maybe so.” Rosie nodded in understanding. She hadn’t really thought of that, at least, not on purpose. When he said it, of course it made sense. However, she liked to think of things logically, as least as logically as the Hufflepuff could manage to think. She wasn’t the most logical or academically minded person, in fact, she normally let her emotions control her. But, romantic emotions were foreign to her. And this type of sadness was even further out of anything that she had ever experienced before. She just wanted to know that he was okay. She wanted to be with him, but she knew that she had to wait until after graduation to go and see him. In the meantime, the overarching thought in her mind was to remember how lucky they were: Brandon was alive. So many others couldn’t say the same thing about their loved one.
“I should probably get back to the common room.” Rosie admitted. She wasn’t worried about getting caught out at night, but it was getting late, and she knew that they had to wake up early for graduation tomorrow. Not to mention that she wanted to see Jamie. As sad and worried as Rosie was for herself: her heart was broken for her best friend. “Thanks for sitting with me, Sander. It helped a lot to talk to you. And I’m really happy for you and Susan.” she insisted with a smile, a real smile. She hadn’t smiled all day, but thinking about Susan, a good friend of Rosie’s, and thinking about how happy she was made the Hufflepuff happy in return. There was always some light to look for. Even in these dark times. Rosie stood up, a bit unglamorously and made her way back down to her common room, taking her time. Thinking, no matter how much that she tried to stop herself, about how this would be her last night in the castle.
