Today was Kinsey’s birthday. A day that Riley had been thinking about since he found out when it was. He wanted to make today special, he wanted it to be a perfect birthday for Kinsey. He waited in the entrance hall for her to come down. He had sent her a note by owl this morning, he was sure that her own had delivered it because he tempted the creature with treats to help him out. He knew how much she loved her owl.
Kinsey, Happy Birthday darling! Don’t make any evening plans. Meet me at 6 o’clock in the entrance hall. Dress up - I’ll be the one wearing a suit.
Love, Riley.
He stood, bouncing a little on his feet against the stone wall near the main entrance. In his hand, a bouquet of forget-me-nots with a few red and white roses mixed in to enhance the bouquet. She had once told him that she loved forget-me-nots. He was wearing a light grey suit, a fairly nice one that he had let his sister pick out for him in France about a year ago. And he wore a light pink tie, pink was always a good color on him.

The school year was ending and the foreign students would be returning home soon, but today was a special day for Kinsey Bainbridge. It was her birthday. Kinsey wasn't one for making a big deal out of that fact, she didn't tell everyone and remind them so that she could get compliments, but a part of her hoped that something special would happen. She was turning seventeen, she was of age now. Wasn't that something to celebrate.
However, she wasn't expecting Scuttle to come to her that morning. He normally didn't come unless he was bringing a letter from someone she wrote to, but she stroked the bird before taking the note. When she read it, she couldn't help but grin to herself. Riley had something planned! He told her to dress up and while Kinsey wasn't one who really liked dressing up, she would do it for him. She would do anything for him.
So she found herself getting ready early. She left her hair curly because she knew he liked it that way, but pulled it back into a loose knot at the back of her head so it wasn't hanging in her eyes. She put on her favorite dress, a knee-length royal-blue dress with a cream-colored, lightweight sweater on top. She wore flats, hoping that was fancy enough for him because she was not about to wear heels. She didn't know how long their whatever-it-was would be and didn't really want aching feet today.
Kinsey felt like she was floating as she went down the stairs, heading toward the entrance hall. She was a few minutes early and told herself not to rush- she didn't want to beat him there- but she couldn't help it. She told herself that once she saw Riley, she would walk up to him all composed, like the adult she was supposed to be, but the instant she spotted him, she rushed down the stairs and over to him. She slowed as she reached him, greeting him with a kiss on the cheek, noticing that he had flowers too.

Kinsey came down the stairs and ran over to him, she looked beautiful and was certainly more dressed up than he had ever seen her, which was a little strange actually. She looked like herself, but also somewhat like a different person. “Hey Kins.” he greeted her, smiling at her kiss on his cheek. “Happy Birthday. You’ve had a good day, I trust?” he asked her. He saw her glance at the flowers in his hand and he laughed, as though he had forgot that he was holding them after seeing her. “Oh yeah, these are for you, of course.” he handed them to her, but he had further plans for them, he just didn’t want to wait for her empty handed.

He looked amazing in his suit. Not that that was surprising to Kinsey in the slightest. She always thought he looked amazing. She smiled as he greeted her and wished her a happy birthday and Kinsey nodded. ”It’s been a pretty good day. I’m excited to do something with you now.” Honestly, she didn’t care what they did. Anything with Riley would be amazing, even something as simple as taking a walk or looking at the stars again. Kinsey tried not to guess what he had planned though. She wanted it to be a complete surprise.
He offered her the flowers and Kinsey’s smile widened as she looked at the flowers and then back up to her boyfriend. ”I love them! Thank you so much,” Kinsey took a deep breath and looked around them. She was trying hard to not seem impatient but she really couldn’t wait to see what Riley had planned for them. It was obvious to her that this wasn’t spur-of-the-moment, not that she would have cared if it was. She loved him. Just being together was enough for Kinsey

Riley was feeling rather pleased with himself. He felt like he had gone all out for this evening, and he was so excited for her to see it. He didn’t want thanks or compliments on his plans, all he wanted was for her to enjoy their evening and to have a perfect birthday. He was sure that no matter what he would have done, she would have just loved spending time with him. But she was worth any trouble. She was worth going all out and pulling out all the stops, which he had tried to do. Every detail had been meticulously planned out. “Shall we then?” he asked, gesturing towards the door. He had a somewhat mischievous grin on his face. They left the castle and began walking, while he never told her where they were going, she easily would have recognized the direction they were heading in towards the Pond.

He motioned to the door, asking if they should start and Kinsey nodded, "Yeah, let's go." She was trying to tone down her excitement a little bit, but she was also sure that Riley could see right through that, what with him being hyper-observant and such. She looked over at him, her curiosity rising when she noticed his mischievous expression. What did he have planned? "I don't need to be scared, do I?" she teased, quirking an eyebrow at him as they walked. She followed, beside him, butterflies rising in her stomach when she realized where they were headed. The pond. Her pond. What were they about to do? She reached over with her free hand to try and grab Riley's, ignoring his intentions but just wanting to touch him in that moment.

Riley couldn’t help but laugh when Kinsey took his hand and asked whether or not she should be scared. “That depends, you trust me?” he asked, just teasing. Of course she had no reason to be scared, and of course he knew that she trusted him. He trusted her too. He was pretty sure that he trusted her more than anyone else.
They came closer to the pond and the closer they got, the more things began to come into their view. As soon as he caught a glimpse of it, he smirked. It was perfect, even from a distance. He hird a first year to help him, not that he’d likely tell her that, but they had done a great job at getting everything set up. Riley had laced the branches of the trees around their normal bench with hanging candles, which light up the area. The bench was gone and instead, in it’s place was a small wooden table with two chairs and an empty vase in the middle, for the bouquet that he had got her. The table was set nicely with lace table cloths, properly folded napkins and china plates. His mom and sister would be quite proud of him, he suspected. He hadn’t forgot everything he learned in charm school. Next to the table was a picnic basket that had been laced with an extension charm, meaning there would be enough room to pull out each item without anything getting squashed or having to be put into those gross, tacky plastic tins. Next to the basket was the small stack of gifts that he had wrapped with magic since he had never been good at doing it by hand. “What’da’ya think?” he asked her.

He laughed at her teasing, which was exactly the sort of response she hoped for. Then he teased, asking if she trusted him. For a moment Kinsey considered teasing him back, but then squeezed his hand and responded with a simple, "Yes." She trusted him. More than almost anyone else and certainly more than anyone at this school.
She gasped softly as the pond came into view with a setup she'd never seen the like of before. A white, elegant table was set up beautifully underneath a canopy of twinkling lights, in the exact place where her bench normally sat ... where the two of them really met. The candlelight shone on the water of the pond, enhancing the effect and making it seem more enchanting than it already was. Kinsey stopped walking and stared at the scene, trying to burn a picture of it into her mind. She wanted to remember this moment for the rest of her life, no matter what the future brought. No one had ever done something like this before and she doubted anyone else would. Just Riley, and that was exactly what she wanted. The fact that he planned this for her made it even more perfect. Her eyes took in everything as she stared, the empty vase, the picnic basket, the china plates, and the presents; all of it. Her hand tightened around his again and she spun to face him, her eyes twinkling with delight. "It looks amazing," she breathed. She could hardly believe he did this for her, but it was obvious he did and that he was proud of it. He should be. This ... she didn't have words to describe how she felt about it all.

She liked it! Yes! He had done it right! He had impressed Her! He felt rather pleased with himself, but more he was pleased that she was enjoying it since he had done it all for her. “Good! I’m glad you like it!” He told her with a smile and a kiss on her forehead. Now that the big surprise, the local had been discovered, it was time for the rest of the night. He pulled out her chair for her, allowing her to sit before he would sit himself. “So, would you like to do presents first or dinner first?” he asked her with a smirk. Either was fine for him, and since it was her birthday, she got to pick whether she wanted her gifts after dinner, or before. You could eat dessert first on your birthday if you wanted to.

He smiled back and kissed her forehead and Kinsey sighed. Really, she couldn't imagine how things could have been better in this moment. She was here with Riley in a place that he prepared just for her, to make things special on her day. She followed him over to the table and then sat when he pulled out a chair for her. Kinsey tapped her chin as she tried to decide what she wanted first. Eating, so she could enjoy whatever food he had in that basket, or presents, which were something she really hadn't expected him to get for her. She made a face at him and then chose. "How about let's start with dinner. Then I can see whatever else you have for me." As in the presents, but she strangely felt a little awkward talking about those. She still couldn't believe he had presents for her. She glanced around again as she waited for him to get the food out. "So how long did it take you to set all this up?" she asked curiously.

She decided she wanted dinner first, which was fair enough. He sat down after making sure she was sat and comfortable. Once he was sat also, he pulled the picnic basket up onto the table from the spot it had been sitting on the ground nearby. He had the house elves pack the meal, as fun as cooking was when he was doing it with her, he didn’t really think he was going to do it again. It wasn’t exactly the type of thing he’d want to spend his time with. He recognized the necessity of it, especially since he wasn’t really sure where he stood yet on the issue of getting a house elf for himself once he moved away from his family. He saw the convenience of House elves, and he knew his parents would insist on it, but he didn’t mind doing some things by himself with magic, and he could always order takeout instead of cooking.
He reached into the basket and began pulling bits out. He honestly he had no idea what they packed, he just asked for a nice dinner. The only thing he was specific about was the small cake, that had to be anything but chocolate, since he knew how much she didn’t like chocolate. The first thing he pulled out was a vanilla cake with what seemed like a raspberry frosting. Lovely. He set it down on the table and continued pulling out platters. Potatoes, chicken, rolls, and, vegetables, a full meal came out of the basket and onto the table. “Well, looks like the house elves out did themselves.” he smirked, setting them all around on the table for easy access. “Birthday girl gets to go first.” he insisted.

Kinsey watched, a grin on her face, as her boyfriend started pulling platters out of the basket. Ooh, he had to do something to make sure none of it got messed up in that basket, she was sure. She'd have to ask him about that later. Right now, she was too overwhelmed by the gesture he was making, having planned something so detailed just for her. The food looked fabulous, of course, and once he had it all out, he looked to her and told her to go first. Kinsey dished herself food and waited for him to do the same. Once they both had food, she started eating. The food was as good as it looked and Kinsey didn't really want to talk while she ate. She was hungrier than she initially realized.
Once she finished the meal, she looked over at Riley and smiled. "That was great," she looked back to the table. The only thing she hadn't touched yet was the cake, which looked delightful. She laughed, "but I think I'm going to need some time before I try that cake. I'm full right now." She shrugged a little, "So what should we do while we wait to eat the cake?" Of course, she could see the stack of presents beside the table, but she didn't want to bring them up. This was Riley's thing. He planned it all and she wanted to make sure he was enjoying this as much as she was.

the meal was great, and Riley was pretty happy with what the house elves had done with it. More than that however, he couldn't wait for her to open her gifts. He had put a lot of thought into what to get her for her birthday. He wanted everything to be perfect. One of her presents he had known that he was going to give to her since the day he met her. it was kind of silly and he wasn't sure if she would even remember it. But if she didn't, he would explain it and hope that she didn't think he was being too weird or dorky with it. The other two were things that he had put a lot of thought and time into. "You wannah open your presents?" he asked her with a smirk, catching her little comment about 'whatever will we do now' and her glance towards the gifts. She was so cute. He couldn't help but notice. He pulled the three of them up onto the table. One big one, one medium one, and one tiny little box. "Go for it."

He smirked when she asked what they should do and Kinsey couldn't help but smile in return. Actually, she hadn't stopped smiling since she met him in the entrance hall. Well, she hadn't smiled every second while she ate, but other than that .... oh, the point was that Riley was amazing and she couldn't believe that he was putting so much time and effort into her. He asked if she wanted to open her presents and she nodded enthusiastically while saying, "Sure!" Yes, her actions were a lot more excited than her words. She was trying (and failing) to keep her cool. He pulled the gifts onto the table and told her to go ahead. She looked at them, trying to decide which one to go for first. She ended up taking the medium-sized one, looking over at Riley and shrugging before she started taking the wrapping off, her excitement building as she did so.

She took the medium one, the one that required the most planning, but still not his favorite of the gifts. She'd unwrap the box to find a t-shirt that displayed the phrase "I heart Brighton" with a silhouette of the Brighton pier. They had talked once about going to Brighton over the summer and Riley had done his best to make it happen. And he had done it, a weekend at the seaside, complete with a overnight stay at a hotel overlooking the ocean. All of this was outlined to her in a card which was hidden inside the folds of the shirt. he felt weird about just giving her an envelope with their train passes and hotel receipt, so he had sent off for a shirt as a gift for show. "I don't know if you remember when we talked about doing things over the summer holidays, but I still really think it would be fun for us to go down to the sea so I made it happen. We're going in July!" he explained to her.
