Addi nodded as he said the widely known American term for muggles. She always thought it was a little... immature sounding. "No-Maj," she repeated. 'No Magic'. That was... tacky, she thought, but she didn't say that. He said it depending where you were in Canada and that their were different ways of saying it. "Do you speak French?" she asked, curious. She had always wanted to learn another language but just hadn't gotten around to it. French would be a useful one. She did indeed lead him out of Diagon and turned toward him with a shrug, "staying the night would be possible, but I couldn't guarantee my sister wouldn't kill you if she saw you. She's in law enforcement; shoot first, ask questions later type," she explained. "Don't worry, Cute Steve. You'll get home before it's too dark," she promised. Then she reached back to grab his hand and suddenly pulled him into the next alleyway, ducking down. "Okay," she said, her knees bent so she was down near the ground, "see, over there?" she pointed back down the alley and there was a small hole, big enough to crawl through though, in the back corner of one of the buildings. It had a faint glow to it, "it has to be magical, no?"@steve

@addilyn “No-maj,” he repeated following her own repetition. It had to be strange for her to hear it, considering it was strange for him to hear ‘muggle’ every now and again in casual conversation. He still wasn’t sure where that word even came from. There was a certain level of simplicity in ‘no-maj’; it meant non-magical, and that was that. Muggle could literally mean anything or nothing at all. Addilyn asked if he spoke French, and Steve hesitantly nodded his head. “Je parle un peu,” he said effortlessly. “I speak some,” he translated, unsure if she actually knew what he had said. “Technically I’m fluent, but I prefer English. It can get you a lot further in most places than French can. The people in our community come from all over. The closest no-majs are in Quebec City though, which is mostly French. As is the rest of the province.” Giving her a history lesson on his home was not what he had expected this conversation to turn into, but it was also nice to share what he had grown up with.
Wonderful. She had an older sister in law enforcement. There was no telling what those crazies thought about vampires, or even half-vampires. For all he knew, that sister would think he was leading Addilyn down a dark path. People these days were fanatical when it came to those like him. “At least it’s just an older sister. I don’t have the best track record when it comes to older brothers,” he laughed awkwardly, instinctively reaching up to his eye where he had been clobbered once. In his defense, he had never actually been officially dating the girl, so there was no need for her brother to Hulk out on him. “I appreciate it. My mom gets worried that I might get swept off my feet by a pretty girl and never come home again.” Thankfully he said that before she grabbed his hand and pulled him into an alleyway. “I didn’t know we had made it this far in our relationship already,” he mumbled quietly, mostly to himself, as he ducked his head down in unison with her. Following where she was pointing down the alley, Steve squinted to see a hole, and what she said must be magical. “Or it’s the home to one of those giant sewer rats I’ve heard of.”

Steve repeated the strange word and she did, one more time, "no-maj," before giving a firm nod. Then he nodded his head, though he didn't seem sure about it, and spoke some French. She pursed her lips a little, impressed, and nodded again. "I've always wanted to learn a second language but just never have... French seems lovely, but I've always wanted something that would be used often. I feel German may be good, or Japanese but... in the wizarding world there are even more languages like that of goblin and giant. That may be even more useful," she suggested, digressing a bit. He said he didn't have the best track record with older brothers and she couldn't help but laugh. "I have one of those, too. But I'm sure he wouldn't bother with you," she said. Then her eyes widened a little. "Not that you aren't worth being bothered with," she added. He said he appreciated not being home after dark, saying that his mother was worried he would get swept off his feet by a pretty girl and never come home. She just pulled him into the alley, not commenting on that, but grinning. He mumbled something about their 'relationship' but she didn't respond to that either. She kept a hold on his hand and took a step forward. "Giant sewer rats. R.O.U.S.'s?" she suggested, turning to look at him with a raised eyebrow. @steve

@addilyn He grinned as she repeated ‘no-maj’ once again. That word was going to be used in excess these next few school years. There were a few things that he wasn’t willing to give up culturally, and the use of that word was one of them. It made so much more sense than running around talking about muggles, in his opinion. So very British of the British to come up with that word though. His grin only got bigger as she said that French seemed lovely, but there could also be more useful languages to learn out there. That was…true. “French is only useful if you’re in a French speaking country. In my experience at least.” Where it did come in handy though, was if he wanted to turn on the charm without actually using the vampire part of him. Girls seemed to melt over the language, even the ones that could speak it. Something about being bilingual just seemed to do it, and Steve didn’t need more of an explanation than that. “Spanish or Chinese maybe? That’s if you want to communicate more with those muggles of yours,” he laughed, mostly at how the word ‘muggle’ sounded coming out of his mouth.
So an older brother too huh? Her reaction and follow-up comments made it sound like he wasn’t the kind to care. Or was he the kind that seemed like he wouldn’t but really would? Steve had run into both in the past, and the latter was the scarier of the two. “For the record, my sister wouldn’t be bothered by you,” he sent back at her, smiling when he pictured the look Nora would have on her face if he managed to get a new friend before she did. Or whatever could come from this. He was never opposed to keeping his options open, especially in a new place.
“R.O.U.S.’s?” he asked, returning her own raised eyebrow with his own. What on earth did that mean? Obviously it had something to do with the sewer rats, but it could stand for was beyond his knowledge. “Excuse my redneckness, but this country boy has no idea what you just said,” he laughed. “You’ll have to go easier on me with that city-talk, Addilyn.”

He said French was only useful in a French country as far as he was concerned, and suggested Spanish or Chinese instead. "Chinese would be good," she agreed with a nod. He laughed, though, and she wasn't really sure why but she didn't press the issue. Then, in lieu of his sister, he said that she wouldn't be bothered by her and Addilyn grinned, "that's a nice thing to hear," she admitted. Siblings were a big part of peoples lives, after all, and he and his sister seemed close to far. He claimed he didn't know what R.O.U.S.'s were and she frowned, "it's from a muggle movie. 'Rodents Of Unusual Size'," she explained. "Hmm... maybe we should save crawling in for another day. Who knows, we might end up on another continent," she straightened, turning to look at him. "Meet me here this weekend? Friday? A little earlier, like... five?"@steve (you wrap it up ahah)

@addilyn Steve found it interesting that Addilyn thought Chinese would be a more useful language – it definitely had to do with that fact that the country was closer here than back home. Spanish would have been his third language of choice, only because of his neighbors to the south. And then there was the Norwegian from his dad’s side of the family…too many languages going on his head would only give him a headache, and he had enough of one trying to wrangle Nora all the time. Speaking of her… “Yeah she’s great once you get used to her. Has a few screws loose, but means well most of the time. I think,” Steve chuckled. While he could be eerily similar to his sister in some instances, he tried to make sure they were distinct enough on their own as well. The last thing he needed was to be lumped together when she went wild all by herself. From a no-maj movie, was it? That would explain some of it. They occasionally watched movies as a family, but they were typically action ones, Nora always getting her way with the high-energy and fast pace. “And I’m sure it makes something like this that much more intense,” Steve said as he observed the crawl space again. “But yeah, I can probably swing that. I don’t think I have much going on then anyways.” Steve looked back down the alleyway they had just entered, realizing that now was the best time to skip out and get back to his family. “See you Friday then,” he said, giving her a small wave before heading back off towards where he assumed they would be.
