((New York City, May 4th 2014))
Jacob woke up excited, it was his seventh birthday and he had spent weeks being excited. Of course it was also his twin sisters birthday so he did have to share it with someone else. Jacob didn't mind, he was just happy it was going to be a party with streamers, a cake and presents. Oh how he couldn't wait for the presents, he could only imagine the gifts he would get. Leaving his bedroom he was only half dressed just because he was so excited to see what the house looked like. He was disappointed as it all seemed the same to him. He was just seven with no idea that it was far to early to be getting ready for the party, his mother had just started breakfast let alone get ready for their birthday. His mother shooed Jacob out of the kitchen insisting he get fully dressed.
Jacob listened but before getting back to his room he met his twin sister in the hall. She proceeded to punch him in the shoulder. "Ouch." Jacob replied even if it didn't hurt that bad. "What was that for?" His sister just laughed, "birthday punches little brother." She laughed again and he was annoyed slightly. "So I can hit you then?" He asked not really planning on it but after she hit him it was only fair. "Nope! You can't hit girls, I'll tell mom." And with that she was gone running to the kitchen, she was right after all. Their parents always stressed boys weren't allowed to hurt girls even if she was a jerk sister.
With magic it only took minutes till the whole house was filled with decorations for their birthday. It also meant his No-Maj friends from the neighborhood couldn't come but that was fine right now. The rest of his family was here. His grandmother and father from his mothers side and Grandma Queenie from his father's side. He would never say it out loud but she was his favorite. He loved going over to her house and baking with her and listening to the stories of his Grandfather. The first Jacob who he and his father were named after. Those were some of his favorite memories.
The food was all but gone and cake was just a few pieces left, his grandmother Queenie baked it herself and it was probably the best part. That wasn't just because he loved cake either. It was time for presents, the part both children had looked forward too. All Jacob wanted was a broom of his own, both parents said he couldn't because they lived in New York City. There wasn't any open space for a wizard to be flying around and No-Majs not see. Jacob was only seven he didn't care about that he just wanted a broom.
His grandmother Queenie brought up her gifts, his sister got another book but Jacob was being moody. The small box didn't have a broom in it and he didn't care, still his grandmother was trying to be sweet. "Go on honey, guess what's inside." She smiled and Jacob couldn't help but cheer up a little at that. Queenie wanted to have some fun and see what he was thinking it might be and she used her legilmancy to do so. Jacob tried to imagine and think what it might be but what he got was the image of Queenie putting a teddy bear into the box and wrapping it. "It's a bear!" Jacob answered before he unwrapped the box, it was the exact bear he saw in his mind. "Now sweetie, how did you figure that out?" His grandmother asked a little confused. "I saw you do it... I think." Everyone was confused now but most of the family just thought he was being a silly kid, he was one to make up goofy things.
The party continued for the rest of the family but for Queenie she had a feeling what had happened and decided to test her theory. For the rest of the party she kept asking Jacob what she was thinking or what she had put in her hand. Each time Jacob focused and guessed right and it didn't take long for the rest of the family to notice that too. "You got it alright." Queenie said with a huge smile as she hugged her grandson. His father was the next to speak up about it having grown up with a Legilimens for a mother. "Are you sure? Maybe he just got lucky?" His father assumed as no one else in the family showed such talent besides his mother Queenie. "Of course I'm sure honey, this boy has the gift." Queenie finally let her grandson go and just patted him on the head. "What gift? The bear?" Jacob was confused but Queenie just laughed a little more. "No, something much better but it's getting late and it's your bed time. You come over this weekend with your sister and I'll explain it more." Whatever she meant he was just excited to go over his grandmothers during the weekend and figure out what she was talking about. That and help bake more of her cookies.
Jacob's parents and grandmother put him to bed but he could still hear them talk from outside his bedroom. "You keep your private thoughts a little more quiet from now one, it only works on me right now because we were connected but that won't last long." His grandmother explained outside his bedroom door as they seemed to be walking down the hall now. "My son, a legilimens, at this age just like you." He could hear his father say as the voices got fainter. "Oh honey, I was reading strangers when I was his age. He's got a lot of catching up to do if you want him to give his Grandmother a run for her money."
