Despite his wife being home and waiting for her next film to start production, Blaise felt like he had barely seen her. It was for a good reason though – the majority of her free time had been spent practically attached to their son’s hip. The recent escalation of terror had effected everyone differently. For him, it was a small break from the Obliviator’s office, and then straight back to work as a hit wizard once again. Since the job transfer, he had barely any time to think. He was out of tune, rusty, slow. Old. That was the one he hated the most. There were plenty of grizzled hit wizards out there, but they were missing body parts or had suffered from ailments far worse than spell damage. Escaping to the Obliviator department when the children were born had been his way out, and now he wanted to go back to what he had missed. There was less paper work involved here as well, which was something that he had grown to hate at his old job. Everything about being an Obliviator had made him miserable. It was possible to see that now in hindsight. Aggression was left to build up and be taken out on miserable sacks of stupidity. At least being a hit wizard provided him with some real entertainment.
Tonight had been planned to be a family affair. Except a few hours earlier, Daphne decided to snag their son and run off to her sister’s mansion to see her side of the family. Something about it ‘being ages’ since she had seen Astoria. Blaise distinctly remembered having dinner with the Malfoys only a month earlier. How that constituted as ages, he had no idea. Hollywood was his only explanation. So, instead of having his wife and children with him for a nice dinner out together, it was just him and Liona. Blaise had promptly cancelled the reservation that had been set up at the restaurant, and instead told his daughter to bring a friend along if she so desired. There was no reason for her to be completely bored with his constant droning about work, and he hated to admit it, but he was somewhat curious about the people she was remaining friends with following graduation. When he had finished at Hogwarts, it was straight to work and his classmates were forgotten in the blink of an eye. There weren’t any complaints from him though. He was better off without the majority of those dolts hanging onto him, grasping for any semblance of success in their miserable lives.
Arriving to the arranged meeting point considerably early stared at the muggles as they passed by him. How little they knew about everything. There was a time when he hated even being near them in public, their innocence mistaken for ignorance. He knew now that it was their duty as magic users to ‘protect’ that, in a sense. They also seemed to like his wife’s movies, so they couldn’t be that bad.

"Everything's going to be fine. It's just my father," she said out loud with a calm that she knew she didn't feel before she grabbed Jamie's hand and began walking towards the pre-planned meeting spot. 'Just' was not the proper wording to use when it came to talking about Blaise Zabini. Not even from her, and she was his daughter. She'd wanted to try to make it seem like not that big of a deal but it was just that big of a deal. This entire ordeal was that big of deal. Her father had wanted to go on a family outing but her mother had taken her brother to see Aunt Tori so her father had told her that she could bring a friend along with her. Now, normally she would have done no such thing. She was sure he had meant the invitation to bring a friend but Liona still would have gone by herself and would have listened to her father talk about his work. She would have caught in up on the events of her life, including her new internship with the Department of Mysteries that she'd be starting in the next two weeks as well as anything else that she'd deemed information that she was sure he'd like to know. They would have enjoyed the food, maybe talked about her mother's newest films and that would have been the whole of it. Somehow, however, Liona had thought it a good idea to bring Jamie along. She'd wanted to see Jamie and she'd wanted to catch up with her father, why not do both? Except Jamie was her girlfriend. Which meant Liona would have to tell her father that the person she'd brought with her was her girlfriend. How he would react, she wasn't sure, but that was what was making her nerves frazzled.
They were approaching the meeting spot and Liona saw her father right away, standing on the street. She took a deep breath, holding onto Jamie's hand a little bit tighter before they moved closer to where he was. "Hello father. I hope you weren't waiting too long." She let go of Jamie's hand very briefly to give him a quick hug before she stepped back. "This is Jamie Greyback. She's a new chaser for the Holyhead Harpies. She's also my girlfriend." On the end of her words, she took another quick deep breath and grabbed Jamie's hand once again. Her mind was speeding through thoughts. Would he think her holding her hand too much? Would he like her? She had never introduced someone to him as her boyfriend or girlfriend. Would he see this as her being ready for marriage? Her head was starting to hurt from the onslaught so she smiled at Jamie. "Jamie, this is my father, Blaise Zabini, who I hear is back to being a hitwizard for the Department of Magical Law Enforcement."

Liona said that it was just her father, but Jamie didn’t see anything just about meeting her girlfriend’s family – or at least, one of her girlfriend’s parents. Liona would hopefully never have the pleasure of meeting Jamie’s father, and with the way reconnecting with her mother had failed, Jamie was almost certain that Liona wouldn’t be able to meet either of her parents, which really meant the Slytherin would just have to make peace with Jamie’s plethora of siblings. Of all of them, Aaron and Odette were the most like her pseudo-parents, but of the two… Odette definitely had the potential to be a lot scarier. Jamie tried not to think too much about what would happen when Liona met her family, though, because that distracted from the task at hand – namely, making a good impression on Liona’s father. She had opted to wear clothes that could be dubbed business casual, which really just meant a nice dress that she had received as an early birthday gift from Lily in April. She hadn’t worn heels, which was good, considering Liona was walking along at quite a fast pace, probably because of her nerves, and Jamie had to force her own steps a little faster to keep up.
The introduction that Liona gave was brief, but more candid than Jamie had been expecting. For a Slytherin, Liona sure did seem to be blunt. Liona smiled at her, and Jamie smiled back, attempting to be encouraging as Liona introduced her father. Jamie stepped forward, a bright smile on her face as she extended her hand for a shake. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, sir.” Jamie said smoothly, hoping that her Hufflepuff charm was working.

Blaise saw them approaching from a considerable distance away. It took him until Liona got closer to realize that she was holding the other girl’s hand. He wasn’t going to feign ignorance, especially when she walked straight up to him. “Not too long,” he said, reciprocating the hug. Liona stepped back to the other girl and introduced her. Blaise turned his attention to the blonde, his daughter’s girlfriend, Jamie, a chaser for the Holyhead Harpies (a damn good team in his opinion). But also a Greyback. That was a name he hadn’t heard in a long time. He knew that there were children all over; that was no secret. Greyback had the tendency to spread his seed everywhere he went, and so far it hadn’t been too much of a problem for the Ministry. Which was surprising, considering he also had the nasty habit of returning years later to turn the kids. At that point it was more important to protect the statute of secrecy. The last thing they needed was a wild werewolf child running amok in a muggle town.
He looked down at Jamie’s hand as she offered it, before looking back up to stare at her as he shook her hand in return. Just because the Greyback girl was Liona’s girlfriend didn’t mean he couldn’t intimidate her in the same manner he would a boyfriend. That was his daughter still. “Likewise,” Blaise kept it brief. “And correct. Being a hitwizard fulfills certain…let’s call them cravings that my old job as an Obliviator never could. I’m sure playing professional Quidditch does the same thing, Miss Greyback.” He was still unsure if she was one of the ones that could turn or not. That would change a few things – mostly safety measures for Liona’s sake. She was a smart girl, so he trusted her enough to make her own decisions with that in mind.

Liona held her breath after her introductions of the two. As expected, Jamie was polite and as warm as she always was, holding her hand out in a formal greeting and Liona felt pride well up in her, though she wasn't exactly sure why. She still held her breath because it was her father's reaction she was waiting for. And then it happened. She watched as her father stared down at Jamie's offered hand before looking her directly in the eye and shook it. The intensity on the street went up fifty percent and Liona felt mortified at the realization of what he was doing. He was trying to intimidate her. Of course she knew this was normally something fathers did when it came to meeting their children's boyfriends or girlfriends. It was one of the many reasons why she hadn't introduced her father to anyone before. She was considered an adult now though and she sincerely didn't expect him to act this way. It was only made worse when he spoke, talking about cravings. She really hoped he didn't mean it in the way that she thought he did. She cleared her throat in an attempt to change the direction of the conversation. "I'm glad you were able to convince mother. I do recall you saying that you preferred it to being an Obliviator." she said, drawing the attention to herself. She would have to try her best not to talk over Jamie when she felt like things were going south but it was really hard when it was what she knew she should do. Smooth things over and get them back on track. It was something she saw her mother, and occasionally her father, do during events they hosted at home. This was more important to her than that. She wanted them to be civil with one another if not genuinely like each other. "I'm feeling a bit famished father. Where is it that you have picked for us today?"

Jamie watched as Blaise looked her up and down, aware that she was being appraised but not flinching in the slightest. If he thought that he was the first person to judge her, then he was probably stupid – and Jamie knew that no Zabini was stupid. Therefore, she had to assume that Blaise knew that him looking at her in that manner would mean next to nothing to her. She knew that she was a Greyback, and she knew that she was a werewolf, and she knew that there were purebloods that had problems with both of those things, but she was going to continue to give Liona’s father the benefit of the doubt. He made a comment about being a hitwizard fulfilling cravings that being an Obliviator couldn’t, and Jamie furrowed her brows. There was obviously a dig in his question, but she was still operating under the assumption that Mr. Zabini was going to be polite to her, and she didn’t want to jump to any conclusions or find fault where there was none. “I’m afraid I don’t understand what you mean, sir.” Jamie said, not smiling at him but also not frowning either. She was more than happy to play dumb if it kept the peace today – the meal was important to Liona, so of course it was important to Jamie.
The Hufflepuff fell back to Liona’s side when she was done speaking to her girlfriend’s father, listening as Liona talked about her mother, and then asking where lunch was going to be. Jamie remained silent, not wanting to accidentally offend, or worse, give Liona’s father another excuse to rib her – if his previous statement had been intended that way in the first place. Jamie still couldn’t tell, and that made her more uneasy than she was willing to admit.

Blaise dearly wanted to give an answer to the Greyback girl’s confusion, but the sound of Liona clearing her throat was the sign to stop while he was ahead. He knew that the little blonde girl was on the same page as he was; the cravings he had mentioned being multilayered in meaning. The first being the desire to release whatever stimuli that she had earned from her father, assuming that she was just like he was. Blaise typically didn’t deal with half-breeds; there was neither a love nor a hate for them. They just existed in the same space as he did. What really mattered to him was whether they were decent beings or not. If there was an equal level of mutual respect there, then the whole half-breed nonsense didn’t matter to him. The wild ones, such as Greyback and his pack, and the vampires that tended to break code, were the ones he disliked simply because level ground would never be built between him and them. It was too soon to tell if the girl was the same way, though he trusted Liona’s judgement well enough to take that detail into account. As for the other meaning, all he wanted to know was if Quidditch was sustainable as a job, and if there was anything past that once retirement began looming over her. In his own case, switching departments solved all the problems that had arisen, which was conveniently being brought up by his daughter as he thought about it. “She seemed to understand that there was more of a need for someone like me there, than there was as an Obliviator. Being a janitor for the human mind is a disgusting business,” Blaise responded, turning his attention from Jamie back to Liona.
They didn’t need to dawdle all day on his job when there were more pressing matters at hand, like eating food. He knew that his daughter brought up that fact to get him away from the path that they had started to walk down, so he nodded his head before turning on his feels to walk towards the restaurant he had picked earlier in the day. “A sushi joint around the corner. I realized the other day that I’ve been longing for decent sushi since the last time I traveled out to Hollywood to visit your mother whilst she was on set,” Blaise explained, keeping his pace as abnormally fast as it always was, despite the addition of the girls. “This place claims to be comparable, so we’re going to test it out.”

Liona didn't realize she was holding her breath again until her brain screamed at her to exhale. Jamie kept her composure once her father had finished speaking but she hadn't really expected her to do anything different. She was thankful for the fact that Jamie wasn't confrontational or else everything would have swiftly gone down hill from there. She didn't think it was hard to understand what her father had been implying. Thankfully, it seemed, her drawing the attention to herself had worked. When he spoke again, he was replying to her inquiry about him convincing her mother to the career switch. He even added his own personal opinion on his disgust of the human mind. She couldn't agree. She wanted to go through the human mind; it was one of the reasons she wanted to work in the Department of Mysteries. She would get to do just that and so much more in the department and she couldn't wait to start her internship. Her smile this time only held a little bit of the previous tightness and much more of her genuine happiness for her father. "I'm sure they're grateful to have their best Hitwizard back. " She had been much younger when he had been in the Hitwizard division but it had been obvious he was good at what he did. He was a Zabini after all. It was then that he turned and began walking off towards their destination in his usual quick pace. Amusement appeared on her face momentarily as she turned to Jamie and smiled, grasped her hand, and gently tugged her along. "He normally walks like this," she whispered to the blonde before focusing on what he was saying about the restaurant. It was a sushi place that was comparable to one he'd found in Hollywood during a visit with her mother and he wanted to try it out. Liona really enjoyed sushi because there were many different kinds. She thought it had something for everyone and yet people still loved to hate it. "Do you like sushi, Jamie?" Even if she didn't, she was certain the place would have something else she could eat.

Liona’s father said that her mother seemed to understand that there was more of a need for talented people as Hit Wizards than as Obliviators, and Jamie decided to try to insert herself in the conversation again, hopefully in a more positive light. “One of my best friends from Hogwarts is training to be a Hit Witch. Andromeda Lestrange.” Jamie offered, hoping that Andy had met Blaise, and made a good impression. Jamie didn’t mind seeming more impressive because of her associations. And if Liona’s father didn’t like Andy… well, there was a high chance that he wasn’t going to like Jamie, either. For all of their differences, Jamie saw a lot of herself in Andy, and in the way they saw the world. They were two kindred spirits who had found their way to each other, and as such, someone’s opinion of Andy had a big influence on how Jamie saw them, and vice versa. All that Jamie could do was nod along when Blaise mentioned that being the janitor for the human mind was disgusting. She could only imagine the horrors that some people had seen, and Blaise had to clean up.
The destination for their dinner was apparently a sushi place, and Jamie raised her eyebrows, unsure of what to think about the choice of food. Liona asked if she liked sushi, and the Hufflepuff figured it was better to be honest than accidentally make a fool of herself. “I’ve actually never had sushi before. My mother didn’t like it, so there was no reason to get it.” Jamie replied. She was proud of her ability not to waver when speaking about her mother, even though it still hurt somewhat, to think about how they had drifted apart so spectacularly. “I’m sure it’ll be an adventure to try, though.” Jamie added, trying to make it clear that she wasn’t asking for any accommodations or a switch in venue or anything like that. She normally preferred her meat on the rare end of the spectrum anyways, thanks to her inner wolf, so she didn’t think that raw fish would be much of a problem for her. If anything, the smell would be the hardest thing for Jamie to conquer.

The idea of being the best Hitwizard was certainly an interesting concept. Blaise knew he was far from ever being that; there were plenty of career hitwizards and hitwitches that were far more capable in the field than he was, and had made names for themselves within the department because they had yet to kick the bucket on a mission. Stephen Holmes was one of those, and while he was an oddity that most outside of the department didn’t know about, he was a damn good wizard and did his job flawlessly. Holmes was one of the reasons why Blaise had returned in the first place. The guarantee of working with a genius was hard to pass up. That man was going to make a name for himself one day. “Best at tracking and interrogations maybe, but far from being number one,” Blaise said, trying to make it sound like he was being humble but also wanting to brag about the fact that he was the best one at locating persons of interest by following magic residue trails. The common witch or wizard didn’t even know that was possible. Blaise also wasn’t a common wizard, so that answered most questions.
His ears perked up as the Greyback girl mentioned one of her friends was entering the training program. Andromeda Lestrange. He knew that name very well. They all did. He had yet to interview her, but had been over her file dozens of times, trying to figure out exactly how to deal with that one. Treading carefully was a start. “I’m interviewing her later in the week,” he responded. “And I’ve been known to be the last say with new trainees lately.” He let the thought sit for a few seconds before continuing, “How capable would you say she is, Jamie? Would she have my back as much as she would yours?” Blaise knew those were questions that were tough to answer, considering that any number of factors could change the results of either of them in a millisecond. Having outsider knowledge on the girl would help him figure out his decision when it came down to it though – even if it was coming from a conflict of interest, in a way. Jamie had yet to say anything that stuck out as negative or a lie, so he was sure he could trust her, even if she was a Greyback.
Blaise could tell that there was some kind of discussion going on between the girls as they walked, but tried to pay as little attention to it as possible. Not everything was his business, even if he thought it should be. That’s what Daphne would be telling him right about now. Stopping at a crosswalk to let traffic go through, Blaise pointed out that the restaurant was right up ahead, the sign jutting out from the building just enough that he could see the ribbon of neon lights attached to it. “Hopefully there isn’t a wait…would be awful to have to find somewhere else at this point,” Blaise mused as he stepped out into the crosswalk right as the last car rolled by him.

Her father spoke and she gave a polite nod and smile at his words. In her head, however, she felt smug and pride overtake her. His careful modest covered the meaning beneath his words but she saw it. While he mentioned not being the best, everything he'd said still made him sound like the best Hitwizard in that department to her. She knew that there was more to the Hitwizard Squad than tracking and interrogations but those things played a large part in the operations of the Hitwizards. It was where the glory was. And she knew her father was recognized and the continued success of the Hitwizards. His move back to that department would definitely be more beneficial than she'd originally thought. When Jamie brought up Andromeda Lestrange being on the Hitwizard Squad as well, Liona's brow furrowed just bit, nodding her head as if all she'd been doing was processing the words. The last time she'd seen Andromeda she'd been on heading to the Hospital Wing after a bout of anger had overtaken her and she'd hurt herself. She wondered then if her joining the Hitwizards was an indication that whatever she'd been dealing with was better now. Or else, the Hitwizard Squad and any criminal they were after was in for some trouble. If an outburst came at an inopportune time... Her father shot off questions about the woman and Liona kept her eyes straight ahead, wondering how close they were to their destination. She didn't know Andromeda too well; she hadn't even known that Jamie and Andromeda had known each other or were best friends until she'd had that run in with her back in school. Even now she didn't know if that meant anything. They all paused at a crosswalk and Jamie explained that she'd never had sushi before. "There's something for everyone. I'm sure you'll find something you like. It all isn't just raw fish, though some of the best rolls are the raw ones, " she replied thoughtfully. Some of her favorite rolls had raw salmon in them and she really liked eel and squid sashimi. She followed her father's direction as he pointed out the restaurant before giving a smile. "I'm sure they could free up a table for us. Sushi places usually have quick rotating customers anyway." She did agree though, it was the busier part of the day so finding somewhere with a free spot now would be a bit difficult. She didn't foresee a problem though.
