After she spoke, Brandon seemed to turn into water in her hands. He felt liquid, lucid and vapid. Like he could evaporate into steam at any moment if the room got too hot. She saw the moist film of tears catch in his eyes, and he shook his head, making them stop. But that didn't hide it from Adonia. That didn't hide the fact that he was, slowly, vanishing into nothingness right there in her hands.
But then he was kissing her, hard, like a wave crashing against a rock by the sea. She heard a whimpering sound and realized it had come from herself. But why? She was kissing him back, wasn't she? Her hands were desperately clutching at the collar of his shirt, trying to find skin. Her lips where kissing, and kissing, and gasping for air. She was pulling him to the couch, wasn't she? So then why did she feel like crying? She was supposed to be making him feel better, not drowning in him.
Drowning, drowning, drowning as she pulled him down with her.

Adonia was kissing him back and Brandon was losing himself in her. Every time thoughts of Rosie or of his music came to his mind, he kissed her harder, trying to force the thoughts away. He could feel her pulling him closer, leading him somewhere, but Brandon wasn't paying attention to that. He was trying so hard to focus on Adonia and to enjoy this, to lose himself with her.
It wasn't until Adonia pulled him down onto something soft that Brandon realized it wasn't working. It didn't matter how passionately he kissed her, how much he tried to focus on her, he couldn't. Thoughts of Rosie, of his music, the very thoughts he was trying to avoid, came even more powerfully to his mind and he realized that this might never work. His heart broke again and Brandon started lessening the kiss until he pulled away slightly, stopping the kiss but pulling Adonia in for a careful, tender hug. "Adonia," he said her name gently, tenderly. "I shouldn't do this. It's not fair to you," his voice was breathless, but he held her against him tightly. "I'm broken. I'm sorry," he started trembling slightly, but he wasn't crying.

He slowly started to stop kissing her, and then was hugging her. She felt relieved. So much of it. Her heart started slowing in pace and she felt her eyes welling up with tears. She wrapped her arms around him, too, and squeezed him tightly. "Brandon," she said back, just as softly. "Don't be sorry. Don't you dare be sorry," she shifted a little so they were sitting up together, arms still around each other. "I shouldn't have... I'm not very good at cheering people up in any other way. This is what I've always done," she took in a deep breath. In that moment she realized that yes, she loved him and was in love with him, but no, she didn't want to be with him. She was grateful that he'd shown her what that love could look like, even if he didn't know it, and that was the best thing she could have had in her life.
She gave him another tight squeeze, then pulled back, "I'm going on a tour with a show. It's supposed to be four months, might be longer. I got cast in Macbeth," she said, a bright smile forming on her face. She squeezed his shoulders where her hands were. "Promise you'll right? Tell me about your life. And... be happy. Send me music," she said, laughing.

She was telling him not to apologize and Brandon just tightened his arms around her. He wanted to be a good friend to her and didn't want to mess that up, even now that things were all changing around him. Adonia was so important to him, but he was still in love Rosie and Adonia didn't deserve to be treated like a backup. "You're just fine," he told her, whispering. They were sitting now, and he couldn't help but feel relieved. "Thank you for being here for me. I really ... you'll never know how much that means to me." He couldn't explain it right, but she was one of his closest friends, which wasn't really something he expected. She pulled away, saying she was going on tour and his eyes widened. She was leaving? He smiled at her, despite the fact that he was sad she was leaving. "Congratulations, Adonia! You deserve it," he told her honestly. He'd miss her, but he was glad she'd be happy. "I'll write you, as long as you come find me when you come back." he chuckled a little, "and I'll send you the best music I can. Good luck with everything," he said, but he didn't quite want to leave. "Can we just talk a bit?" he asked. The two spend the next hour or so conversing, until Brandon had to go back home. He was sad she was leaving, but it felt right. Still, he'd definitely miss Adonia. --- the end --- @adonia
