They were out of school for the summer and Hugo couldn't be more excited, though he hated the events of the last few days. The attacks on the foreign students as they traveled home was a terrible, stressful ordeal and a part of him felt guilty for so many deaths. Yes, he knew it wasn't actually his fault that they died, but if he had only known ... maybe he could have done something about it. But he didn't and they were gone. Only four survivors left. Luckily, one of those survivors was his cousin's boyfriend ... fiance? He wasn't sure how Anna would have responded if she lost Oscar, but it would not have been pretty. It was a good thing the Beauxbaton's kid was safe.
All this went through his mind, and more, as Hugo stood outside Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour, waiting for his good friend Winnie to show up. Yes, she was his girlfriend's sister, but they could still be friends, right? They grew up in the same house, so Hugo always knew the girl and they kind of had this tradition of getting together after school let out and going for some ice cream. He couldn't remember exactly how it happened, but it was tradition now, so he waited outside the shop for his friend to show up, trying not to think too much about the events of the past few days.

The last few days had been full of drama and stress, with the attacks and lives lost. People who she had spoken to, who she had gotten to know - were now dead and it wasn't fair at all. But there was nothing they could do, not now at least, but maybe later there could be something - something that they could do at least to help the students families. But then at the Graduation, something else happened - or rather, she was made aware of something that was going on. Her sister - would be getting kept back, repeating her sixth year instead of going on to Seventh the next year. For the first time in their education - Winnie would not be sharing classes with Xan and while Winnie was trying to look on a bright side. Trying to be supportive - she was honestly saddened and conflicted about how she should feel. While both of them were independent enough, the girls were still close, which was to be expected really.
It had all left the usually outgoing girl rather quiet, but she was still determined to follow through with the tradition that had been in place. Hugo was a good friend of hers, and while yes- he was dating her sister, they were also friends and got along rather well. It had become a tradition and something she looked forward to every year - and right now - it was kind of something she could use to distract her from everything else that had been going on. So here she was hurrying up to Florean Fortescue's - a small smile on her face, as she waves, "Hugo!" she grins and hurries up to him, reaching up to mess with his hair, "How're you?"

At the sound of Winnie's voice calling his name, Hugo was able to find her in the crowd, approaching him. He grinned, glad that she was coming. Granted, he never really thought that she wouldn't, but all the same he was happy to see her. This was tradition, after all. She rushed up to where he was standing, reaching to muss up his hair and Hugo ducked, smirking when she missed her aim. "Missed me," he teased. This was an ongoing game between them, seeing if she could playfully mess up his hair, but Hugo always won. He had absolutely no intention of being witness to Winnie's death, so not letting her touch him was a must. Then again, she wasn't really trying. She was a good enough friend that she knew about his vision. "I'm good," Hugo answered with a relaxed sigh. "Glad to finally be out for the holidays. You?" He cocked his head curiously as he watched her.

She hadn't really given it all that much thought, it was a tradition after all - and even with everything else that had been going on and what had been on her mind. There was no chance that she'd miss out on catching up with Hugo here. Her eyes lit up as she gave a small laugh, the weight on her shoulders finally dropping a little as he ducks to avoid her hand, it was just a little game between them. She knew that he didn't like touching people - and she got it, if it was her, she certainly wouldn't want to know how the people she cared about would die either. Merlin it was a scary thing to think about even and she silently admired how he handled it, of course - she wasn't going to tell him that though.
"You wish I missed you." Winnie teased him right back, a small smile on her face - before playfully sticking her tongue out at him. He might be her sisters boyfriend - but he was also her friend all the same and she liked hanging out with him. She was almost certain that he likely would notice if she wasn't quite herself, "Eh - I'm doing alright, Its nice having a break from school. But my head is full of all kinds of stuff - some good, some bad. The usual and more." she gave a slight shrug before tilting her head, wondering if he knew yet, "Have you spoken to Xan.. I mean, since the graduation and stuff." She didn't want to tell him, if Xan hadn't told him yet - it was her news after all.

Hugo grinned when Winnie teased him back. This was familiar and normal and he was glad that things between them hadn't changed. Sure, he was completely in love with Xan, her sister, but he was glad that he and Winnie could still be good friends and that his relationship hadn't changed their dynamic. She was just plain fun to be around. "You always miss," he continued the game, unable to help himself. It was too fun and they hadn't been able to do anything together for a while now. He chuckled when she stuck her tongue out at him. "Do you want to talk about the stuff?" Hugo asked. He could sense that there was something she wanted to talk about, even if she didn't come outright and say it. Then she asked if he'd spoken with Xan and he knew what she was thinking about. He nodded. "I have. How do you feel about it?" he didn't want to come outright and say that Xan was going to be a year behind them next year, because that would make it too real, but he could bring it up vaguely. That was fine, right?

After everything that had gone on through the last year, all the worrying and stressing - it was nice to feel the familiar feeling, the lightness as they bantered and teased each other. Hugo was one of the few close friends that Winnie knew was a true friend, they had been friends for ages and sure there was a little awkwardness at first with Hugo dating her sister - but she trusted Hugo with her sister, knowing that he cared for Xan and would make sure she wasn't hurt. If however she was hurt in any way though, well, was sure Hugo knew how that would go. Now though - it was just them, and it was fun and light and she felt the weight on her shoulders lightening as she rolled her eyes amused, "Sure - and you missed me too." she tilted her head at him before shrugging slightly at the question he asked her.
Truth be told she would just ignore it and try not to think about it, but part of her wanted to talk about it with someone who might understand how she felt, "I'm just.. kinda torn. It's weird to think about next year - but I get it, you know?" She didn't want to say it outloud, those words that Xan wouldn't be joining them in their Seventh year together. So she was just stepping over the actual words, "I feel like I shouldn't feel so much about it though - its Xan not me. Is it right that I feel that way?" she shook her head as she spoke the question, a small groan escaping her - she was frustrated with herself.

He grinned when she said that he missed her too, but he didn't say anything, just shrugged his shoulders at his friend. They could go on like this for ages, talking about how they'd both missed one another so it was probably better for him to just let it go. When Winnie just shrugged back at his question, Hugo waited. He understood that she might not want to talk about this right now. In a way, he felt the same. It was a hard idea to grasp, the idea that his girlfriend, who he'd studied with for so many years, wouldn't be in the same classes as him next year. It was strange and different and honestly, Hugo didn't want to think about it. Winnie probably felt the same. He nodded when she did start talking about it. "Yeah, I get it. I really do, but ... it's not like we won't see her, you know? It'll just be a bit different." A lot different, in almost every way, but he could handle that. He could. As long as he still got to see his girlfriend constantly, which he would also make sure happened. He couldn't imagine school without her. "I don't think it's wrong to worry about it, or even stress out about it. That's natural. You've always been with her, so it's going to be different." Hugo knew he was repeating himself, but he didn't want to come right out and say it. Still. He didn't know if he'd ever really be able to talk about this, about being without Xan. "If you need to talk about it, I'm here for you," he added, his voice a little softer. Winnie would be able to understand more than most. If she needed to talk, he could do that with her.

It was a bit of a strange situation, and while logically she understood it completely - it still stung a bit and it was still a little hard for her heart to deal with. She wasn't sure who to talk to about it, not knowing who else knew other than her parents and professors - and she felt weird talking about it with her sister, but Hugo - he knew and he'd understand it pretty well. She gave a small chuckle and nodded at his words, "yeah I know - we'll see her around tons still. But - it will be.. different and a little weird." she paused for a moment, sighing as she rested her chin against the palm of her hand as her lips pressed together. Winnie glanced back at Hugo, eyes narrowing slightly as he spoke again, the words he said though - they struck almost as a perfect bulls eye to how he she was feeling.
"That is it... even with being in different houses at school. We've always been together - even when we were born - Xan arrived and I was following right behind her - well, with our brother in the middle of course but still. We do things together - a little separate but still together. Now this will be something different, I won't be following her doing something - it won't be together." She gave a small groan and dropped her chin. She hated feeling like this, "It's different. For everyone I guess - not just me, I'm not used to doing something big without my sister beside me I guess." All weirdness aside - she still was relieved about one thing, "Thanks Hugo, I kind did need to talk with someone - and you're a great listener I guess.." she gave a small grin before looking back at him seriously, "As weird as it is.. I.. I'm just glad she's gonna be around at all." she had been down right terrified of losing her sister completely after all.

It was kind of nice to know that Hugo wasn't the only one struggling with this. Granted, there was no way he wanted to let Xan know how sad he was that she wouldn't be with him all year next year, but it was nice to know her sister felt the same. He wondered how she felt about the situation, since the two of them hadn't really had the chance to talk about it a lot. He nodded, "It will, but it'll all work out in the end. She's still Xan. She'll be there for both of us, even if we don't all have class together."
He nodded as Winnie continued to explain how this was going to be so weird to her. Of course, he couldn't understand completely, since he hadn't been with Xan as long as she had, but he could understand where she came from. He and Xan spent so much of their time together, even being in separate houses, that it would be different to be without her. Hugo didn't really know what else he could say to Xan. "She might not be beside you, but she'll be there for you," he repeated, sure that Xan would say something similar if she were here. She wasn't about to leave her sister and boyfriend on their own just because she wasn't in the same year anymore. He smiled at Winnie. "Of course. I'm here for you anytime you want to talk, Winnie." Then she mentioned being glad that Xan was going to be around at all and he nodded. "Yeah, it got rough there for a while, but she's fine and I'm sure she will be for a long time." He was absolutely certain of that, thanks to his visions.

It was nice to know that she wasn't alone in how she was feeling. Of course - she knew that she could talk to Xan about it, but at the same time it felt wrong to do so.. the last thing that she wanted was to say something and have her sister feel bad about it after all, Xan surely also had her own feelings about it. And it wasn't really even Xan's fault - it was just something that happened, she had gotten sick and this was the result. But she had Hugo to talk to and - it really was helpful being able to speak to someone who understood and she could lean on. "Of course. She's still Xan." Winnie chuckled, tilting her head slightly as she offered a small grin, she knew it was true - no matter where they were or how far away from each other they were, Xan would always be her sister and would always be who she was.
In the end it didn't matter how she was feeling, but Hugo understood enough and that meant a lot, "Exactly." she murmured and nodded slightly, she knew for sure that Xan would probably say something much like that to her along with shaking her head and scolding her for doubting it even for a moment. The thought made her smile and she shot a quick grin back at Hugo, "That goes both ways Hugo - I'm here for you too." she raised her eyes, curious at his final words, "You know that for sure - don't you?" It wasn't often that she asked about his abilities, but it was a little re-assuring to know it might be a certain thing that her sister would be okay for a long time ahead.
"Anyways.." she shook her head, determined to try and change the subject a little, "Have you decided what you're gonna do yet? For your career and stuff?" she was a little curious - of course she had her guesses but, it was better to ask and hey - it was also a good distraction.

Hugo nodded when Winnie mentioned that Xan was still Xan. That was the thing. Even though she'd be a grade younger than them and wouldn't be doing the same things as them for the first time ever, she wasn't going to change who she was just because of that. When they needed her, she'd be there for them. Hugo was certain of it and had the same goal for his girlfriend. He wanted to be there for her and help her.
He smiled, "Thanks Winnie. I'll keep that in mind if I ever need a chat." He had plenty of people to go to, with Sav and Xan, but he was glad that Winnie would be there for him too. It was nice to have such good friends. He nodded when she asked if he knew it for sure, feeling like he didn't need to actually come out and say it if he nodded.
She asked what he wanted to do after graduation next year and Hugo shrugged. "Kind of. I want to either be a cursebreaker or work in the ministry somewhere. I haven't really made up my mind, but I'm thinking cursebreaking would be better." At least, it would be more exciting and he'd have a bit of space from his mom if he worked there. "What about you?" he asked the question in return, kind of surprised they hadn't already had this conversation. How did he not know what she wanted to do?

In the end, that was what really mattered - despite their differences Winnie was incredibly close with her siblings and while she may have been the youngest of the three - she was fiercely protective of them as well. While she had other friends, none were as close to her as her own siblings, honestly with a moment of thought - the one almost as close was infact Hugo himself and he was dating her own sister. The thought made her smile and shake her head slightly. She knew she could count on Hugo though if she needed to talk about these things - particularly when it came to Xan.
As much as she enjoyed talking about her sister it felt right to shift the subject, besides she was curious with what Hugo was planning on doing after their last year, she had a few ideas on what he might be good at - but seeing where his mind was leading him was interesting and her eyes raised curiously at his response, "I could see you being a cursebreaker - ministry though, depends what you had in mind.." Her lips quirked slightly into a half grin, "I can't see you sitting behind a boring desk all day.." she gave a small laugh before shaking her head. "Me?" she shrugged slightly, she knew most who knew her had the thought of her going after Quidditch, The blonde girl loved the sport and had a passion - and a talent for it as well.
"I haven't spoken much about it, but I think I know what I want to do for sure - as much as I love Quidditch and as much as I'd like to go on to play it professionally there is another job I have in mind - I haven't told Xan yet though." she paused and sat back a little, "I want to be an Auror. There's been so much going on the past few years - and I want to help. To do something, to be able to help people - to protect the ones I care about."

Hugo nodded and laughed, "Yeah. I think at the moment I'm seeing myself a bit more as a Cursebreaker, but I'm also trying to keep my options a bit open, you know? I don't want to get locked into something and then decide I don't like it after all. I'd rather just know from the time I start that it's what I really want." He knew it wasn't easy to make this decision, but Hugo was determined to do it right.
He quirked his head to the side, intrigued when Winnie started mentioning how she hadn't brought this up to anyone. That was definitely interesting, to say the least. He nodded when she said she hadn't told Xan yet. That meant that this was staying between them. This was Winnie's news to tell, not his so he would keep her secret for her. "I can understand that. Wanting to make a difference and help people is a very important job." He just didn't think he could do it. Not after all the stress that he saw with his Uncle Harry before he disappeared and with everyone else he knew that was involved in it. "I think you would do well there." She would. Winnie was determined and could do whatever she wanted. Hugo was certain of it.

Winnie gave a quick but small grin as he laughed, nodding his head - she could totally see that, "Sounds okay with me - I mean, we still have a bit longer before we have to completely decide you know? It's our last year sure - but part of that is working out exactly what road we want to take during the year. I know a couple people last year who changed their minds half way through the year and they ended up just fine." she offered a smile and a quick shrug, "Honestly I think it's cool that you're not fully decided yet, it means you're gonna make sure what you go with is truly what you want, and there is nothing wrong with that."
She had done a lot of thinking herself, tossing and turning and of all things - she had made several lists before ending up with the same answer in the end, "Yeah - I just, our past few years at school.. they haven't exactly been easy you know?" she paused, knowing Hugo would know exactly what she was talking about, "But through all of it, I've wanted to do something - to be able to keep those I love safe and not have them in danger. At the same time - I know it won't be easy, but..." she gave a small shrug, "But - in the end, I hate just not being able to help.." It had really bothered her, with things going on - and then when Xan was sick she had felt so helpless - not being able to do anything, while it was different it had left her feeling helpless much like she had when people were being attacked and killed. Not doing something - she hated that feeling.
"I know I need to tell Xan and everyone else, and I will but.." she rolled her eyes here, offering a small grin, "I figured you might get it and won't try and talk me out of it either. I am still holding onto Quidditch as a back up all the same though - seems like a good idea to have one."

Hugo was glad that Winnie thought he was fine. Sure, he already thought that himself, but it was nice to know that someone else thought it was alright that he didn't know for sure what he wanted to do after school. He nodded to her, "Thanks. I think that's important too," he told her, pausing a moment before continuing. "And it's okay if you change your mind too- not that I'm trying to convince you to, I just want you to know that I'll support you no matter what you decide."
He smiled as she went on to explain herself a little more. "Yeah, I get it. That all makes sense," he told her, hoping that his sincerity was coming through. "And no rush to tell everyone. You have all year, and I'd just look for the right moment, as long as you feel ready for it." Hugo laughed when she mentioned Quidditch as a backup. "Sounds like you've got it all figured out, pal," he teased her a little. He couldn't help it. This was Hugo Weasley, after all.
