Ruby is an unusual teenager with two distinctive sides: a quiet, focused side that lets nobody in and a wild side that challenges everyone and everything. No one is really sure how or why these two sides developed, but they seem to mesh well inside this single person.
The quiet side of Ruby never really left from her childhood. This is the first personality everyone sees when they meet Ruby. She comes off as quiet, unsure, and almost afraid. She is a complete bookworm and artist who is intensely focused on her school work. This side of Ruby is a make or break for most people: they either muscle through it and discover her true self or they turn away and leave her to her own devices. It serves as a shield of sorts, letting Ruby know who is worth trusting and who should be left alone. This side has intensified since her transfer from America to Britain. She has put her walls up, untrusting of anyone, especially after all of the tragedies that have occurred in the area.
The deeper side of Ruby's personality is her true personality, revealing a vivacious, eager young girl with a thirst for adventure. People that take the time to get to know Ruby are blown away by this side of her, as she seemingly becomes a different person. She is surprisingly mischievous, and her knack for explosions lends itself to this side of her personality. She is fiercely loyal and protective of her friends and will not hesitate to defend them with her wand or with her fists. She can be a little spitfire when she wants to be, and she frequently challenges - but never breaks - the rules. It takes a special person to get to know this side of Ruby.

history:
To be quite frank, Ruby was never meant to exist. Her conception was a complete accident. However, like these things usually go, her parents fell in love with their "little accident" and nine months later, the youngest Scott child was born. Ruby was a very quiet baby. With the exception of the moment she was born, she rarely made a sound. Her parents were convinced something was wrong with her, as both of her older siblings had been loud babies. But the healers reassured Annabelle and Layton that their daughter was perfectly fine.
Ruby remained a quiet child growing up. She had no developmental delays to speak of, she just didn't feel the need to talk unless it was necessary. Her siblings thought it would be funny to antagonize her for being so quiet all the time. What they didn't realize that what Ruby lacked in voice, she made up for in body, and the little redhead was quick to fight back to defend herself. The "fights" between siblings went on for awhile, and Ruby slowly began to find her voice, as well as an unconscious habit of making things explode with her young magic, which she conveniently blamed on her older brother and sister.
The youngest Scott had few friends growing up, and she was quite content with that. Her parents once again wondered if there was something wrong with their child, but Ruby was always quick to explain that she simply liked being alone. She didn't like how loud the other kids were and she was happier playing with the family dog or with her toys.
It was as if a light switch went off when Ruby received her Ilvermorny letter. She ran through the house screaming, shattering several light bulbs with her uncontrollable magic, and letting out all of the pent up voice that had escaped her for eleven years. Her parents, relieve that their daughter was finally showing some outward excitement, took her to town to buy her supplies for the upcoming school year, as well as a runty half-kneazle kitten. Ruby immediately fell in love with little Leo, feeling that he was just like her. She was all set and ready to begin her time at Ilvermorny.
Upon arriving at Ilvermorny, Ruby was sorted into Wampus house, the house of warriors, which came as a surprise to everyone. Her siblings looked at each other in confusion, expecting her to be a Pukwudgie, despite the house not even reacting to Ruby's presence. Ruby joined her housemates, scared and nervous and excited, and things began to change for the better from that moment on. Ruby quickly began to grow out of her shell, becoming a more vibrant and vivacious child. She struggled to make friends due to her antisocial nature as a child, but those she did make became her best friends. She was a surprisingly bright student, learning to control her explosive magic, but still having a penchant for causing explosions, managing to burn off her eyebrows during her first lesson.
In her few quick years at Ilvermorny, Ruby became a respectable individual. Even her siblings stopped picking on her, welcoming her into the fold, and defending her awkwardness from bullies. These were the happiest years of young Ruby's life.
As time passed, word began to travel from Britain to America, and it spread like a wildfire. Hogwarts had been attacked and several students had been kidnapped, Ruby read in her newspaper clipping, and she was rightfully shocked. Hogwarts was supposed to be one of the safest places on earth. Even American witches and wizards knew that. And things only seemed to get worse for Hogwarts. Something told Ruby that their hosting of the Triwizard Tournament was a bad idea, although she was secretly jealous that she couldn't participate. But the tournament went off without a hitch, and Ruby followed it closely, reading every scrap of newspaper she could find with the tournament details. But then the Beauxbatons carriage and Durmstrang ship exploded at the conclusion of the tournament. Ruby felt an immense sorrow for the school she didn't even know, but she was also glad no such thing had happened at her own school.
Ruby was in the kitchen painting when she received the news. Her brother entered frantically, shouting some nonsense about explosions. At first, Ruby thought she accidentally blew something up again, but she had long since learned to control the explosive nature of her magic. No, her brother shouted. Ilvermorny. It was ruined. Gone. Ruby didn't believe him for a moment. He was playing another trick on her, just like old times. But then her older sister confirmed it. Ilvermorny, and everything in it, including Ruby's wand, was gone. Ruby was heartbroken. Everything she had known for the past three years was in ruin. Her wand was lost forever. It was all over.
In the coming weeks, Ruby and her brother received letters stating that they could transfer to Hogwarts for the upcoming school year. Ruby jumped at the chance to continue her magical education, and her parents agreed. The whole family uprooted from their little town in Dumas, Texas, and moved to Great Britain. It was a great change to get used to, but Ruby was willing to accept the challenge.
