Cara didn't say anything for a bit after Kinsey spoke, but Kinsey didn't mind. She was enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, since she and Cara seemed to have gotten their anger out. At least, she hoped they had. Kinsey didn't really want to spend her entire vacation arguing with her older sister, though that was definitely a possibility. She and Cara rarely saw things the same way. If it got to that point, Kinsey would just go on more walks to avoid her, or maybe ask Seph or Peyton or Penelope to go on a walk with her. That shouldn't be too hard and at least she was fairly confident that they could keep a positive conversation going with one another. Cara started to speak, saying that she went to see the new Star Wars movie. Kinsey smiled, about to ask her sister what she thought about it when Cara started to cough. Kinsey waited, cringing a little bit internally at how bad the cough sounded. Before she could talk, Cara said that she went with Dominic and Kinsey's smile froze on her face. It shouldn't be a surprise. Kinsey knew that Cara and Dom were friends, but she hadn't realized that was outside of school. After a moment she nodded. "I'm glad you didn't have to go on your own," she said, unable to think of anything else to say. At least she hadn't seen Dom with Cara. She hated that. "Did you like the movie?" Kinsey asked, hoping Cara wouldn't notice her tension. Not that Cara would understand anything about it if she did. She didn't know about Dom, which was for the best. She wouldn't believe Kinsey anyway. cara june bainbridge

@kinsey She barely got through her comment about bringing Dominic along when a few more coughs dared to slip out. This whole being sick thing was starting to annoy her. Everything had been simple before Kinsey came out to join her; now every time she said something, a coughing fit followed. Calling it coughing was being generous. Cara felt like her chest and lungs were being ripped apart without hesitation. Clearly the potion she had brought along hadn’t done its job when it came to curing the cough. It had managed to make her drowsy beyond belief though, and kept her wide awake in between doses. That was what this was right now: a gap in medication. Not like there was much of a difference in getting a headache from coughing and listening to Kinsey whine. One hundred percent of the time Cara preferred the former.
Her most recent cough managed to drown out what her sister was saying though, and Cara held her pointer finger up to try and get Kinsey to wait until the fit subsided. She managed to miss the timing though, and only heard the last part about not going to the movie on her own. Obviously she wouldn’t go on her own. There were plenty of people that would want to go to the movies with her, unlike someone she knew. Cara didn’t know if Kinsey was being sincere with the comment or not though, and simply nodded her head instead of responding, afraid that if she did, more coughs would make their way out of her.
Kinsey proceeded to ask her if she enjoyed the movie, and Cara decided immediately that it was a stupid question to ask. It was Star Wars. Anyone that disliked Star Wars had no reason to be in her life. No ifs, ands, or buts. And definitely no idiots. “Of course I did,” she answered, though she didn’t think she really needed to answer that in the first place. “There were a few nuances in the romance plot that I could have done without,” Cara shrugged. “But Star Wars is Star Wars. That and having Dominic with me made for an excellent birthday, I’d say.”

Cara nodded at Kinsey's comment and Kinsey was just glad that she hadn't gotten her sister to get angry at her again. Obviously, from the way she was coughing, Cara was having a rough go of it. If she was anyone else in the family, Kinsey might try and suggest she go inside so she didn't get worse, but she didn't think Cara would like her suggesting something like that. Cara liked being in charge, not letting others take charge of her and tell her what to do. She gave a small smile at Cara's answer. Of course she did. Naturally. Kinsey's eyes hardened slightly as Cara mentioned Dominic again. She couldn't help it, just thinking about the guy made her stomach churn. The fact that her sister spent so much time with him ... didn't help. That wasn't new though. Cara always adored Dom, just like he wanted her to. And somehow he'd charmed his way into Diana's heart as well, which made Kinsey sick whenever she thought about it. Neither of them knew him like she did, obviously. "I'm glad you enjoyed yourself," Kinsey answered. "I'll have to go see that sometime." Maybe she'd be able to convince Riley to go with her. Or one of her younger sisters. Kinsey wasn't a big fan of crowds, but honestly how many negative intentions would there be with people going to see a movie? She tried to think of something else to ask her sister and eventually came up with something. "You do anything else to celebrate your birthday?" As long as it was a positive interaction, she might as well keep on asking Cara questions. cara june bainbridge

@kinsey A sudden strong breeze had Cara pulling her blanket closer around her neck. Had she not been having a conversation with Kinsey (if what they were talking about could even be considered a conversation in the first place – it was more like they were mindlessly musing about things they had done since the end of the school year), she probably would have stuck her head under the blanket in an attempt to make a tent. While she wasn’t out to get more of a chill than she already had, it beat the alternative, which was exhausted, cranky siblings yelling at her to fix her cold or go home. She knew they probably wouldn’t do that, but even thinking she could be an annoyance gave them one-up on her automatically.
“Thanks. I did,” she responded. Getting enjoyment out of a Star Wars movie was extremely easy, especially for her. Even the simplest stories in their movies were interesting to her. Sometimes there was more with less – a concept she seemed to have trouble with these days when it came to her own work. “I’m thinking of going again,” Cara said automatically when her sister mused that she would have to go and see it. She didn’t outright invite Kinsey, but that was what she was getting at. The best part was that they didn’t have to talk to each other during a movie. In a way, movies were the best thing for them to do together.
Kinsey asked if she had done anything else to celebrate her birthday, and Cara turned her head to look at her sister again. “Wouldn’t you like to know,” she teased, her lips curling up at the corners slightly. In actuality, it had been the movie and that was basically it. As much as she enjoyed spending time with Dominic, the guy had other things to do as well, and she knew that she couldn’t keep him to herself all the time. Even if she wanted to. Hopefully Kinsey would keep asking the right questions, because stringing her along for no reason was fun.

They were back to a semi-civil conversation and Kinsey couldn't help but feel relieved even though she definitely still felt on edge. She was sure that the moment she got comfortable, the situation would grow confrontational again, so wouldn't it be better to not relax? She nodded when Cara confirmed that she had a good birthday and enjoyed the movie. At Kinsey's comment, Cara said that she was considering going again and Kinsey looked at her curiously for a moment. Was that an invitation, or was she just stating a fact? Kinsey wasn't sure ... so after a slight hesitation she responded. "Well, we could go together if you want ..." Kinsey waited for her sister's response. Half of her expected Cara to refuse immediately, but she was the one to bring up that she wanted to go again. Why not with Kinsey? Cara was teasing now. At least, that's what Kinsey thought she was doing. She looked at her sister curiously, still trying to follow this conversation. One moment they were fighting, the next hardly speaking and then teasing? At least they weren't fighting again. She rolled her eyes, but smiled to try and keep the mood light. "Whatever you did, I hope you enjoyed it," Kinsey answered. If Cara didn't want to talk about it, there was no way Kinsey could force her. Nor did she want to try. She thought a moment, cocking her head to the side. "I can't remember ... did I even see you that day?"

@kinsey Cara couldn’t help thinking that Kinsey was supposed to be the bright one here (but only if they were comparing test results), but she clearly hadn’t taken the hint that she was being invited for the second viewing of the Star Wars movie. Was this because there was always criticism between the two of them, that having a normal conversation like they were trying to do right now seemed so forced and awkward? Cara knew that she hadn’t said anything that was too confusing or cryptic, if anything she had hinted at the fact that she wouldn’t mind Kinsey tagging along the next time she went. But apparently something had been missed there, because her sister was starting to say that they could go together. “That’s fine with me,” she sniffed, her nose itching to cause another sneeze every time she tried to talk. “But once this cold is gone. Don’t want to ruin the movie for anyone there for the first time.” Her own viewing had been spent trying to figure out what Dominic meant every time he pulled her closer while they were waiting in line, and then that thing. Just thinking about it made her face burn slightly, luckily she could pass that off as the cold if Kinsey even noticed in the first place.
Her tease seemed to be met with sarcasm, and if that wasn’t sarcasm, Cara didn’t know what to classify it as. Anything from Kinsey in that combination of words had to be sarcastic, right? Cara decided to ignore it though, instead answering it as a normal statement. “I did. After Dominic had to go, I went about my own business. Had some things to pick up from the bookstore that day, and that was pretty much it,” she shrugged. “Probably not. You have a tendency to avoid me while home.” And vice-versa. Cara preferred not fighting while in front of their parents, because it ruined her image. And she hated hearing Kinsey doing her classic whine at home. At least at school it could be done in front of their classmates, who would think she was just as immature as Cara did. Home though? They would both get reprimanded for fighting. That wasn’t worth her time or energy.

Kinsey's lips turned up in the smallest of smiles when Cara said that it would be fine with her. Of course, she wasn't delusional enough to think that meant things would actually be really alright between the two of them, but it was a step in the right direction, right? Hopefully it would turn out well, at least. Honestly, Kinsey could never tell if interactions with her sisters were good things or not. Sometimes she wanted them to be wonderful and they turned out to be as close to torture as she knew. Not exactly promising. "Sounds good. Maybe if you're better by then, we can look around for tickets and choose a day after we get back from this," she gestured around herself to the beach. Cara should be feeling better in a week, shouldn't she? Kinsey nodded when Cara explained what she did with the rest of her day. Going to the bookstore and a movie was pretty productive in her book, but it also wasn't really something that needed a verbal response from her. She scrunched her nose up for a second when Cara said she avoided her at home, but she also couldn't really fight it. She did avoid Cara at home. And Diana. It was just easier that way. Besides that, Kinsey was tired of always fighting with her sister. "Sorry I didn't wish you a happy birthday," she said softly, actually feeling a little guilty though she didn't know why. It wasn't like the two of them had the best relationship. "but I'm glad you enjoyed it all the same." She looked out at the beach, closing her eyes a moment and just listening to the sounds of night. It was so peaceful and relaxing here. cara june bainbridge

@kinsey Of course she was going to be better by the time they went to see the movie. If not, she would drown herself in medicine. The only reason she hadn’t done it for the trip was because the cold hadn’t rolled in until the previous night, something she never would have expected. The medicine Cara had already downed that morning and throughout the day was sure to kick in eventually – it had to. So far all it had managed to do was knock her out cold for the trip and most of the day, which she was simultaneously thankful for and also not. Without the hours of sleep she had acquired, she wouldn’t have been sitting out here in the cold, most likely making her illness worse, as well as getting annoyed by Kinsey’s presence every now and again. “I don’t think we’ll have trouble finding tickets by time we’re home,” Cara stated, barely escaping another cough. “It’ll have been out long enough so lines won’t be bad, I mean.” Which would also buy her more time in the off chance that this cold lasted longer than she wanted it too. It only made sense that she would make it through school untouched by sickness, only to get slammed with it now.
Kinsey apologized for not wishing her a happy birthday, and Cara barely reacted. It was sincere enough, but she also didn’t need her sister’s well wishes. If she did, she would have been looking for them the day of. That was long gone now, and it didn’t matter anymore. “There is always next year. And the year after, and so on and so forth,” Cara yawned. “Birthdays lose their meaning when you have to share them. It’s like, I get it. Diana and I are another year older. It’s wonderful. Not like we didn’t know that already.” She didn’t mean to roll her eyes as hard as she did, but it still happened. This had nothing to do with Kinsey, but it was the fact that they had to deal with it year after year. The novelty wore off years ago. “Thanks. I like being able to do what I want to do.” And that meant spending time with Dominic over Kinsey. This conversation wasn’t that bad though.

Kinsey smiled when Cara said it shouldn't be hard to find tickets once they'd returned. "I think you're definitely right about that," Kinsey said. She was running out of things to say to her sister and was thinking that maybe she should leave and let Cara leave in peace. Cara's reaction to her apology was just what Kinsey expected and she nodded in return. She would try to do something with her sister next year on her birthday. She wasn't exactly sure if Cara would want that, but she felt bad for never trying with her sister. What? Why were these feelings coming now? A desire to get along with the sister she always fought with? It was impossible, she was sure. Kinsey sighed when Cara stopped talking. There wasn't really anything she could say to that ... so maybe she should go. Yes, that's what she was going to do. Kinsey looked at Cara and then back to the beach. "I think I'm going to go for my walk now," she said softly. She turned back to her sister. "Unless ... is there anything I can do for you?" That was the nice thing to do, right? Ask if Cara needed anything before she left? It felt right to her. cara june bainbridge (wanna wrap it up?)

@kinsey Cara didn’t need her sister’s validation that she was right about the tickets, because she already knew that she was. Enough of her time had been spent going to the movies, trying to learn how to write stories that were comparable of those on the big screen. So far that was going nowhere, and this supposedly spiritual journey to the beach to clear her head and figure it all out wasn’t working at all, even if it was still only the first day. Being sick sucked everything out of her. “That’s what we’ll do then,” Cara decided, knowing she would have to be the one to confirm it. Leaving anything up to Kinsey would probably be disastrous. One deviation had already led her sister to befriending Fudge, which was literally the worst thing she could do with her social and educational life, but Kinsey still went ahead and did it. Understanding that was clearly beyond Cara’s comprehension levels because she didn’t get how any of that worked.
Her thoughts were disrupted by Kinsey mentioning that she was going to continue with her walk. Was that what she was going to do before all of this? Cara nodded her head, before coughing once again. “I’ll be fine. Probably take more medicine and then try to sleep again.” It was better to let Kinsey leave now – it would give her the respite she needed from trying to navigate the mental hurdles her sister constantly put up. They still had the rest of the trip to deal with each other anyways. “Don’t bother waking me up in the morning. It’ll be better if I sleep as much now and get healthy before I ruin the entire trip for everyone,” Cara said as she stood up from her chair, pulling her blanket closer to her body as a gust of wind went straight through her. “Night,” she added before sliding through the door and back towards her bedroom, attempting to stifle coughs as much as she could along the way.

Kinsey nodded when her sister decided that they'd look for tickets to the movie when they returned. Nothing else really needed to be said on the subject. She waited to see if Cara wanted anything from her before she left. A part of her thought her sister would use this as a chance to boss her around, but then again Cara didn't like to be seen as weak. There was just as much chance that she'd just tell Kinsey to go. She waited curiously to see what Cara would say. "Good luck with sleeping then," Kinsey said with a small smile. She hoped Cara would actually be able to go to sleep. It was obvious she didn't feel well and Kinsey did want her to be able to enjoy at least a bit of the trip. She nodded again as Cara stood up. "Goodnight," Kinsey answered. Then she turned to the beach and smiled. Stepping off the porch, she walked to the water's edge and enjoyed the soothing sound of the ocean, the soft breeze. This was really starting out as a pretty nice trip, despite the small fight she and Cara had before they started talking. cara june bainbridge--- the end ---
