@jace “Good,” Lily stated flatly as Jace said that he understood and would keep his hands to himself. She knew it was tough sometimes. If there was a picture book dictionary, her photo would be under the words ‘curious’, ‘reckless’, and probably ‘insane’. Touching things and messing with them was her jam, and having to keep her hands glued to the insides of her pockets drove her absolutely crazy. It caused a sort of jittery, itchy feeling in her body that she hated with a burning passion. If it happened today, she was going to have to put poor Jace through the ringer with physical contact. Hopefully he wouldn’t mind her poking him incessantly just to get it out of her system. Some people, not naming names but mostly Albus, would bark at her for doing that but it wasn’t like she could help it all the time. That was who she was.
Thankfully he agreed that the bookstore was a good start, which meant she could get her hands on some books to solve her touching needs. He asked if she had ever bought a book from the store, and Lily shook her head. Had he not heard her explain that she wasn’t much of a reader? Then again, it wasn’t his fault if he hadn’t understood that as her meaning she didn’t read at all. Unless forced, of course. That usually only meant for classwork, and even then she put up a fight most of the time. “Looking around is more my kind of thing. I have better things to spend my money on anyways.” Like candy and clothes, and whatever shiny, interesting object caught her eye. “You the studious type Jace? Or just the naturally inquisitive kind?” So far he had wanted to go on this little adventure with her, a person he didn’t even know twenty minutes ago, and decided to keep asking questions. Lily wasn’t opposed to that sort of person, but was interested in knowing who she was going to be spending time with.

They continued walking toward the bookstore, Jace assumed. Lily seemed to be the more quiet type, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing, except for the fact that Jace wasn't particularly good at being quiet. Unless it was for something important, of course. He could be quiet in class or when sneaking out or pulling a prank, but just walking around with people? Yeah, being quiet wasn't really his style at all. He couldn't help but wonder if that was annoying, but at the same time Jace didn't really care. If it really bugged her, she'd just leave or tell him to. He nodded, not asking more questions when she mentioned that she preferred to look around. He had a sister so he could understand that. Jace wasn't the type to look around. Not really. He'd much prefer to get what he needed to and get out, but not in his case. He was going to a new place and was excited to see what would be there. He shrugged at her questions. "I'm not really good at studying," he admitted. He got good marks, but he didn't study if he could help it. "I am a bit inquisitive though, I guess." She could probably attest to that, since he seemed to be questioning her now. "I just am not really good at staying quiet," he added after a moment, "unless I have a reason to."lily luna potter

@jace Jace responded to her questions by explaining that he wasn’t the type to study or be quiet, and Lily snorted. She already knew about the latter part from first-hand experience. If he had kept to himself instead of inquiring about what she was up to, then she would still be sitting at her table minding her own business and he would be bugging someone else right about now. For that, Lily was somewhat thankful for being the first one he went after. She could deal with annoying and pestering people because she was an annoying and pestering person as well. It probably didn’t seem like it right now because she was in a grouchy mood, but that was her in a nutshell. She was sure that if Jace had seen that side of her, he either would have latched on faster or left her to her own devices. There was apparently such a thing as being too much for a person, even the most energetic types, and Lily was the one that always had more energy than the rest.
“You and me both,” she said, not bothering to alert him that she was about to be abruptly stopping in front of the window for the bookstore they had been walking towards. “You caught me in a rare mood, Jace. I wouldn’t bother taking anything I say to heart. It’s just too much effort to act like my normal self right now,” Lily sighed as she pressed her forehead up to the glass window to see if the store was open. The sign with the operating hours indicated that it was, but that meant nothing in Knockturn Alley. The real way to find out was whether the lights were on inside, and if there was someone behind the counter. From the look of it, the store was indeed open. “After you,” Lily said as she quickly made it over to the door and opened it for the younger boy to enter first. It was only appropriate for him to experience the shop for the first time without her dumb head in the way.

Jace didn't entirely understand Lily when she said "you and me both". Was she saying that she wasn't good at staying quiet, or that she was inquisitive as well, but not good at studying? It wasn't really that big of a deal, but he found himself curious all the same. Not curious enough that he'd ask her what she meant, but definitely enough that he'd watch her a bit at school. He wasn't going to stalk her or anything, but just try and see what she was like if he ever got the chance. She stopped immediately and Jace almost walked into her, but caught himself just in time. He watched curiously as she started looking in through the window. The sign said it was open ... did something in the window catch her eye? He had no idea. "Okay, I'll keep that in mind," he answered with a smile when she told him to not take anything she said too seriously. She was making him more and more curious each second though. What was her "normal self"? Did that mean that she wasn't always so quiet? Wow, she was more of a mystery than he expected. He went through the door when she opened it for him, nodding to her and then looking around himself curiously. The shop was dark, but no more so than he expected. He'd heard that Knockturn Alley wasn't as nice and clean as Diagon Alley, so that wasn't really a surprise. He glanced back at Lily. "This way look interesting?" he pointed to a section labeled "spells". Why not check things out more? Jace started to make his way there. She'd say something if she was against it, he was sure. lily luna potter

@jace Jace learned fast. He was pretty obviously one of those kinds of people that wanted to be friends with everyone, which in reality wasn’t far off from herself either. The only difference was that she would have continued to drill questions into a person if they made the same responses that she was currently making. Being vague sucked, but it also wasn’t any of his business in what was going on in her life. Nosiness had its place, and while she only used it as a guideline (and a rough one at that), it also didn’t need to be present in every single conversation. For Jace’s lack of pressing her further, she was thankful. She knew he could eventually ask what was going on, in which all she would have to do is find the closest copy of the Daily Prophet and show him the front page. Actions spoke louder than words after all.
Lily followed closely behind Jace as he entered the store, making sure to let the door gently close behind them. The last thing she needed was a raging Knockturn shop-owner coming down on her today, screaming about how students had no business in this part of the shopping district. That was always funny to hear coming from older witches and wizards, considering that she was more of a dark being than any of them could ever be. She turned her attention from a dusty book cover she was trying to read, to Jace when he decided that the aisle marking spell books was interesting enough to look at. Nodding her head, Lily closed the distance between them and continued to walk behind him. “Wonder if these are your garden variety spell books or restricted section ones…” she wondered aloud, voice automatically going to a whisper because of how quiet it was inside the store. Her typical booming, high-pitched voice was taking a break from her curiosity today it seemed. “Right, I should explain,” she continued, not missing a beat. “The restricted section at Hogwarts is like, the high-level books that you need permission from a professor to take out. But why waste time doing that when you can just look at them here?” Being careful not to touch any of the book spines, Lily ran her fingers along the edge of the bookshelf, lip curling back in disgust when she realized how much dust she had just pulled up. “Doesn’t look like these have been moved in years.”

She stayed with him as he walked into the shop, which was kind of nice. He was glad, though he’d never admit it to anyone, that he didn’t have to be alone in this shop. While he did like books and he asked her to bring him into Knockturn Alley, he felt more comfortable knowing that he wasn’t entirely alone. Also, she seemed to know what she was doing, which was a good thing. He couldn’t help but snort when she asked if she thought these were garden variety spell books. “Thinking they’re not that first one,” he muttered. He didn’t know what exactly she was talking about, with restricted section ones though. Before he could ask, she started to explain what she meant and Jace watched her curiously. He nodded, “That makes sense.” Then he looked at the shelf and his eyebrows furrowed. “Do you think there’s a reason for that? Or maybe they just want it to look this way so they sprinkle dust on the shelf whenever someone moves stuff around.” Yes, he was being ridiculous. It was a small indication of the nervousness he felt inside. ”Anything look interesting to you?” He’d rather follow her lead in this new situation, but he was still trying to act cool. lily luna potter

@jace Jace was probably right – there was no way that these would be the standard spell books one could buy over at Flourish & Blotts, or any of the other dozen bookstores in Diagon Alley. Lily knew that she knew that, but she had been surprised before by things. It sounded like he understood her description of the restricted section as well, and began asking his own questions in return, in regards to that. Thinking about it for a few seconds as she continued to look at the titles of the books in front of her, Lily cleared her throat before continuing. “I think there just isn’t a super high demand for them,” she explained as she tried wedging her fingers on either side of the spine of a book that looked promising. The darn thing was locked into place though, and it seemed like there was no way for her to get it out without a little more effort and some elbow grease. “Like there are probably only a few versions of this book out there, right? Very few updates or new copies made because the demand isn’t high, and therefore, the supply shouldn’t be either.” All of this sounded strange coming from her mouth, considering she normally didn’t care about the economics of book sales. That was too adult-like for her. “I’d like to see what’s inside this one,” she indicated the book that she had been struggling with, “but it looks like it wants to put up a fight. Doubt it’s actually worth it…” Deciding to give up, Lily wiped the dust that had accumulated on her hands from the wrestling match with the book on her pant legs, and continued down the aisle. There was bound to be something that would both intrigue her and be easy to get off of the shelf. The trick was finding it behind all of this dust first.

She wasn't looking at him, which wasn't really a surprise. They were in a bookstore probably full of books that neither of them were supposed to see at their age, much less be able to touch. He turned his attention back to the books while she spoke, explaining a little more. He nodded, "I guess that makes sense. These books seem a bit interesting, but I don't need to buy one now." Obviously. He glanced over when she stopped, watching her as she tried to pull a book out. At least, it looked like that was what she was trying to do, but it wasn't moving. "Yeah, I bet you're right," he agreed when she started to get all technical with it. He was back to looking at the shelf himself now, running his fingers along some of the spines so he could read the titles better. He pulled his finger back when a rush of cold wind passed him. Was that because of one of the books or just because this place was a bit creepy? He had no idea. Lily was talking again and he looked over and shrugged. "Probably not." He turned back to the shelf in front of him. Not everything seemed dark, per say, but nothing was really sticking out to him yet. He went back to the books he'd run his finger over beforehand, touching one of the spines carefully. The cold wind came again. Jace tried the books on either side, but nothing happened with either of those. The spine of this one was hard to read, but he thought it said something about the weather. He tugged at it, a little surprised when it came out. "This one seems interesting," he commented as he pulled the book off the shelf. He was starting to feel very cold now, but he wouldn't say a thing about it. lily luna potter

@jace Browsing and not buying had to be a special talent that some people possessed. Lily was unfortunately not one of them. Her need to be physical and touch everything was accompanied with her materialistic nature. If any of these books even slightly piqued her interest, was easy to remove from the shelf, and didn’t curse her or curse at her in the process, then she was going to fork over the money for it. Assuming the shopkeeper allowed her to buy it, of course. There seemed to be quite a few things she wasn’t allowed to do still, being less than a year shy of her eighteenth birthday. Eighteen was the sweet spot for the muggles, and that translated to being graduated from Hogwarts for some storeowners. Lily disliked that, considering she could legally use magic outside of school now.
Caught in her own little world, staring at a new row of books, Lily completely ignored what Jace was doing. There were more books to attempt to pry into, and when those got boring, there would be more shops to go to. Finally getting one off the shelf and open, she was greatly disappointed to see that it was written in Gobbledegook. If she could read goblin, she wouldn’t still be going to school. Somewhat frustrated by her inability to understand any of the words, Lily flipped through the pages at lightning speed, figuring that there could be something inside that she would be able to read. There wasn’t. She slid the book back into its place on the shelf before turning to face Jace, who was holding a book in his hands and saying that it was interesting. Raising an eyebrow, Lily stepped behind him, looking down at it over his shoulder. “Looks pretty normal to me,” she commented, not seeing anything out of the ordinary on the cover. “What’s in it?”

Lily seemed to be very interested in whatever she was doing, which was fine by Jace. He liked doing things on his own, especially since it wasn’t something he got to do often. His little sister Indiana loved to tag along and it was a rare thing that Jace was ever without his best friend Brooke. He loved doing things with people, but that also made doing things on his own a rare treat. In and of itself that was its own conundrum. Out of the corner of his eye, Jace noticed that Lily was looking at her own book, but he didn’t care to see what she was doing. This cold book, the fact that touching it made him feel cold, was so intriguing he couldn’t tear his eyes away from it. Opening the cover, the wind became just a little bit stronger, ruffling his hair, but now he could see some of the words. His eyes widened and he felt Lily approach him, heard her question. “I’m not entirely sure. I think it has to do with weather-based spells and potions. They all seem fairly advanced though.” It was still cool to him. Even if he couldn’t understand (much less perform) any of the magic in that book, that didn’t mean it wasn’t fascinating. “You want to look?” He offered the book to the girl beside him. lily luna potter

@jace Lily watched as Jace opened the book in his hands, the small breeze of air passing through him and hitting her as well, causing her hair to fly back briefly. Now that, was an interesting book indeed. She had used a number of warm and cold air charms before, but that thing had some power and was being produced by a seemingly ordinary book. That was the magic (pun intended) of magic books. Never knew what one was going to find inside, and the more mysteries to uncover, the better. There was a reason the school would never willingly give her access to the Restricted Section in the library without proper supervision. Knowing her, she would have all of the most dangerous ones in one pile in the middle of a row, flipping through them page by page to find the perfect hex to turn someone into a bat and give them a mild hankering for pumpkin pie at the same time.
Jace started to explain that it was probably for weather spells or something or other, and Lily turned off her hearing until she saw the book waved in front of her face. “Uh, duh,” she laughed, taking the book for herself. The second her hands were on it, she started to feel the cover become cold, and subsequently her hands. This thing was definitely stranger than it looked. “Where’d you pull this from?” she asked, looking around on the nearby shelves for an empty space. “Because if there’s a less difficult one, like one with less words in it, I’m totally buying it. Then I can make it rain in the classrooms whenever I don’t feel like taking a test.” That was a foolproof plan in her mind, even if it was going to be impossible to pull off. At most she could charm a hallway or a staircase, making it rain or snow however much she saw fit. Or maybe even the entrance into the Slytherin Common Room! That would be hilarious. If she did that, she would have Cordie take a picture so she could send it to Al. He would love it.

Lily laughed at him when he talked about the book being about weather spells or something, but Jace honestly didn't care. She was laughing now, smiling too, which was a great change from how she'd looked when he first ran into her. She could laugh at him all she wanted and Jace would take it happily. She shrugged, watching as she took the book. Then she asked where he got it and Jace frowned, turning back to the bookshelf. "Uhhhh ... Let me look for a second," he muttered as he walked back to where he'd been before. He knew the book left an empty place on the shelf, but for some reason that wasn't making it much easier to find. He smiled as he heard her explanation, but didn't say anything for a second. "It was here!" he finally spoke when he found the right place. "And if you figure out how to do that, you should share because I could definitely use a spell like that." He wasn't quite sure if he was good enough at magic yet to be able to perform such a spell, but he could practice and work towards it. Jace started reading the spines of the other books, wondering if the books here were organized by content or alphabetically or some other way. Hmmmm. "You find anything?" Jace turned to look at her after a bit. He wasn't having any luck. lily luna potter

@jace Lily watched in silence as Jace turned back to the shelf he had pulled the book from, voicing that he may have forgotten where it belonged. Whenever that happened to her, whether it was in the school library or at Flourish & Blotts, she just left it wherever she happened to be. Usually that meant on a table or above the books she was looking at. The fact that librarians or store employees would have to reorganize because she left a mess never really crossed her mind. That was their job after all. Another dozen or so misplaced books wasn’t going to make their day any more difficult than it already was anyways. Unfortunately Jace found where the book belonged, and Lily moved to place it back in its slot. He then asked her if she could share the rainy day spell once she found it. Now that was an interesting request to make. “That depends,” she began, turning to look at him. “On what house you get put in once school starts. I’m in Gryffindor. If you get put there, I’ll let you help me find a spell.” To her, that was a good deal. Sharing her tricks of the trade with a non-Gryffindor just wouldn’t do. She was going to be a seventh year in a few months! All that upperclassman power had to be used correctly.
“I don’t think they have what I need here,” Lily responded. “Maybe another day.” Shrugging her shoulders, she turned to walk back down the aisle from the direction they had initially came from. “I should probably get back to where I was soon. Promised my mum I’d meet her there once she got out of work. Which is-” Lily glanced down at the small watch around her wrist, “In about thirty minutes. I’ll lead you back out to Diagon Alley if you can keep up.” It was hard not to grin at the thought of leaving the kid behind in Knockturn Alley. That would be terrible of her to do, but also hilarious to see him running away from all the creepy old people that were always around.

Jace was definitely intrigued when Lily gave her conditions for whether or not she'd share the spell with him- assuming she actually found one. Being in the same house was a requirement. He pursed his lips. "I'm still not quite sure what the qualifications are for each of the houses, but I'll definitely remember that promise if I get put in Gryffindor," he said with a firm nod. He wasn't sure if he would have any control about what house he got put into, but Gryffindor sounded like fun. He nodded when she said they didn't have what she needed. Really, it was an interesting thing coming here, but he still wasn't going to stay without her, and she didn't seem like the kind of person that was easily convinced to do something once she made up her mind. He grinned when she challenged him to keep up. "Oh, I can keep up," Jace guaranteed, trying to sound confident. That seemed like the best thing to do ... also he really thought he could. He was young and quick and willing to rush. He could do this. lily luna potter (you can choose if you want one more ... Jace out!)
