@annelise He wasn’t sure if there was a stigma about going home after work or not. The aurors, meaning the ones that were officially licensed and dealt with real issues, not his crowd in the training program, all seemed to go out and get drinks after work, but that wasn’t his idea of fun. Unwinding for him meant going home and going to sleep immediately. Morning came fast, especially when he was naturally inclined to stay up late to begin with. That was one thing he didn’t need Cecelia’s help with. Eventually he was going to have to make a decision though, and moving closer to the training facility would be the goal. Even if he did decide to leave the program, at least then he would be in the area for the Prophet. Their offices weren’t exactly far from the Ministry at all. He was sure there was a reason for that.
Grey laughed a little as Anna wished him luck. He was going to need that. “See, I don’t know how you can do that. Living with a sibling I mean. Both of my sisters would probably kill me at some point.” Maybe it was a twin thing. Grey had never spoken with Lucy before, but he had definitely started to mistake her for Anna on more than one occasion. “Not yet. Figured I should make a decision on the job first. But if this ends of lasting longer than I want, it might be better to get out of the house sooner rather than later,” he shrugged. The real problem was going to be when he brought up the part about changing careers to his parents. They wouldn’t be happy. If things were already strained, that would more than likely be the last nail in the coffin. By moving out beforehand, at least he would be doing them a service before they even realized it. The whole experience would be less jarring for sure.

Anna shrugged when Grey admitted that he didn't think he could live with a sibling. "It's easier living with Lucy than it would be to live with my parents." It surprised her that most people didn't know how poorly she got along with her father, but it really shouldn't. In general, Anna wasn't the most open person when it came to her family relationships, probably because they weren't so great. "My dad and I don't get along at all. Lucy and I don't always get along, but I can walk away from her when I'm upset. When stuff happens with my dad I have a hard time doing that ... though I'm not entirely sure if he'd let me if I tried. It'd probably make him more angry." Her living with Lucy was more escaping her father than anything else, but she did love her sister. As a general rule they got along fairly easier. He explained his thought process that came with moving out and Anna nodded her head a little. It made sense, wanting to know what job you really wanted to go into before you moved out. Apparently she wasn't one for making sense. She just did what felt right. At least, in this instance she did. "Why is that?" she asked when he mentioned that maybe he should move out sooner if he was going to stay in the Auror training longer. "Do your parents not approve?" She didn't know if her parents approved. Didn't know and didn't care. She wasn't staying in the job anyway, and she wasn't making her decisions based on their wants for her. grey xavier slater

@annelise Weighing the odds of living either with his parents or with either of his sisters definitely leaned more heavily towards Addi or Claire. At least they were tolerable, or rather, there wasn’t anything wrong with them. The problems he had had with Claire had been brought to light last fall, and while they hadn’t discussed them since, they were out there and if they posed more issues, at least they could discuss them as civilized adults. Prior to that, it was the silent treatment and the blame game, neither of which he liked because they took too much effort to enact. Addi wasn’t bad at all, Grey just felt like there was a disconnection with her lately and didn’t really know how to broach the subject with her. Eventually it would happen, like most things did with him. He just didn’t want to deal with it when he was getting used to a job that he probably wasn’t even going to follow through with in the end. Grey nodded his head as Anna explained her own issues with her father, making him feel like he had whined for no reason. “Guess we all have our own family problems,” he reasoned. This was what happened when they were held to too high of a standard. Expectations versus reality didn’t always line up like they were supposed to. Somehow he had managed to do exactly what he didn’t want to do, and it still wasn’t good enough for his parents.
“Something like that. I don’t know if it’s so they can brag to their friends about having two children in law enforcement, or that they get something out of making us fight to be better,” he shrugged. “And I know that with Claire as a hit witch now, they’ll expect me to rise through the ranks just like she did. I don’t feel like doing that.” There was enough finality in that statement to make it slightly easier to rationalize leaving the auror program. Not everyone wanted to risk their lives, and while it had sounded like a good idea a year ago, it didn’t anymore. He preferred being labeled as a quitter that was alive and capable of doing what he wanted to, than as the rookie auror that was six feet underground. “But if I’m out of the house on my own, who are they to tell me what I do with my life?” The inevitable conversation about him dating Cecelia would come up as well, and her onset vampirism was certainly going to raise suspicion with his parents. That would absolutely be the final straw if he didn’t remove himself from their presence first.

Anna simply nodded when Grey mentioned that they all had their own family problems. That was definitely the truth and she was glad that he wasn't asking more questions about hers, though that might just be because she just told him a bit about them. Still, Anna didn't want the conversation to feel like an interview. Just talking with him was more than enough for her. She listened as he expressed a few of his concerns about his parents. "Their expectations aside, being yourself and doing what you want to should be more than enough for them." That wasn't always what parents wanted, but Anna believed they should want what was best for their children. She shrugged a little, "And if it's not ... that's their problem." She smiled when he mentioned that once he was out of their house he could do whatever he wanted. "So does that mean you're going to look for a place?" Anna wasn't necessarily trying to be nosy, but she was curious and figured she might as well ask. If he didn't want to answer, that was his decision. grey xavier slater

@annelise Grey knew this conversation made him sound like an angsty teenager that was late to the party. That was also partially his parents’ fault – they had drilled so much into him, explaining that their way of doing things and listening to them was the only way for him to accomplish anything in life. While there was no denying that a route through a law enforcement career was a good one, and certainly would lead to a successful life, it seemed all too manufactured by this point. Anna’s mention of doing what he wanted to do being enough, or should at least be close enough to that, hit more at home than it should have. Did he really want to be here right now in the training facility? Was the choice he had made on his own to follow through with the program actually his, or had it been forced into him so many times over the years that he simply thought it was what he wanted? That realization was terrifying, but also made his wavering about the job that more resolute. Quitting would be much easier if all of that was true. “You’re right,” he said slowly. “I think I maybe thought that I wanted this, or at least convinced myself that I did. But I don’t know…” This would require a lot more thinking and introspection before he could come to a conclusion. It would also determine when he would leave the program; now, or after a few more months of training. There were benefits to both in his opinion.
At the question about getting his own place, Grey nodded his head. “I think so. But I also think that needs to come after I decide what to do with my job. One thing at a time.” He found it impossible to worry about too many things at once. Doing that would eventually cause too much stress and worry about life in general, and that was the last thing he needed when making serious decisions about changing careers and moving out of his family’s house. “If this training hadn’t started up right after school ended, I probably would have had more time to think all of this through. It’s too bad that I’m probably going to be wasting their time.”

Anna smiled when Grey said that she was right. It seemed like he was deep in thought and that her comments were helping, which she was glad for. She might not know what she wanted to do with her own life, but helping a friend figure their own things out was definitely a good thing in her book. Especially if they were in the middle of something they weren't sure they wanted to do, like Grey was. "I think that's a good idea," she answered. "Figure out what you want to do with the job and then figure out the 'where to live' situation." She was doing it opposite of him. She knew where she was living, but she needed to figure out what she wanted to do with her life in respect to a job. She wasn't sure if it was something she could figure out quickly or not, but she'd see. Then he started talking about how soon training started and Anna agreed yet again. "Yeah, I have to agree with you on that one. I didn't know what else I wanted to do, so I just started this when school ended. It might have been nice to have a bit of time to figure it out first." She hesitated before continuing, "but I don't think it's been a waste. Even if neither of us stay in the program, at least we're learning valuable skills for defense and protection. Even if we don't use them as aurors, we can still use them to protect ourselves and those around us if the need arises." At least, that was how she chose to look at it. If nothing else, this training was giving her good experience that she could put into use later. grey xavier slater

@annelise More time to think. Eventually he was going to hit a boiling point, all of these confused ideas on what would be best for him bubbling out of control. There were a few more parties he had to discuss both of these plans with: Cecelia for one, and maybe his sisters as well, assuming they were willing to listen to him blabber on about his thought process behind changing careers and moving out at the same time. The odds of doing both at the same time cutting all ties with his parents were extremely high, and that was one of the possibilities that he wanted to run by Claire. Even though she had been moved out for a few years already, he was now in a situation that had been similar to hers. They had already discussed the intricacies of their relationship with their parents in depth, so he was sure she would be able to at least grant him some insight. Regardless, it was nice to hear Anna agree with him on his point.
Grey didn’t necessarily think the training was a waste as much as continuing to waste the trainer’s time by being here was. When younger students had wandered about in the newspaper club room without doing any real work (especially after he had shown them what to do) he had felt rather useless as a teacher. Maybe that was just him though. The auror trainers were there to weed out the weak and those that didn’t really want to be there. In the end, wasn’t he just doing them a favor by leaving? Anna agreed with him once again on this, and he nodded his head as she talked, explaining the practicality of staying in the training for a little longer. He couldn’t agree more on that. The cafeteria was in front of them now, and he remembered that he was here to get coffee, something that seemed like a distant memory after the thought provoking conversation they had been having on the way over. “You want anything?” Grey offered as he stared into one of the glass cases that housed the food. He wasn’t hungry, but if there was something that would help with the energy he desperately needed, coughing up the money wouldn’t be all that difficult. “I think I should have a decision by Christmas. Seems like a good time to make changes, with the New Year and all that,” he stated as he leaned over to get a closer look at some sort of pastry in the display. Whatever it was, it didn’t look appetizing.

Grey was nodding, seemingly agreeing with what Anna thought and she was glad. She didn't want him to have to try and figure everything out on his own. That was part of the importance of friendship, being able to talk things over without worrying about them. Anna was glad she could be there for Grey right now. He pulled her back to the present, asking her what she wanted. "Hmm ..." Anna looked at everything around. "I think I'm in the mood for a sandwich," she answered, shrugging just a little as she before telling the owner what she wanted. She nodded, "I think that sounds like a good plan. It's not rushing into a decision, but it gives you a time limit to figure things out." She smiled, paying the shopkeeper and taking her sandwich. "Maybe I'll try to figure things out by then too," she mumbled to herself. grey xavier slater

@annelise Anna decided to take up his offer, and Grey stepped back as she ordered. A sandwich did sound good, now that he thought about it. That and coffee. The drink was why he was here in the first place, after all. “Good idea,” Grey said as he made his order, a turkey club and the largest cup of coffee they had, black. Even if it was cafeteria coffee, it was better than what he had seen in the squad room, where most of the Aurors were subjected to an ancient looking coffee maker. He was too afraid to test it, positive that countless years of burned beans had corroded the bottom of the pot. Aside from ruining it with cream (or milk) and sugar, burnt tasting coffee was abhorrent. The overpowering charcoal taste and miasmatic liquid was too much even for him.
Those thoughts were dashed aside when his coffee was held out to him, fear subsiding as he glanced under the plastic lid and saw that it looked normal. Good. He could drink this. Rocking back and forth on his heels as he waited for Anna to finish paying for her food, Grey fished through his pockets for his wallet. By the time he located it, it was his turn to pay, trading his ‘hard-earned’ money for the sandwich and coffee. He had difficulty calling the training hard-earned when all they did is repeat drills over and over again. There was some success in that, of course, but not the sort that he thought he would have by now. Nothing had tested that as of yet. Taking his sandwich, he motioned with his head towards a table situated in the corner. They would have enough time to eat before the next lesson started up. “And I could always back out and not mention it to my parents if I’m still indecisive by then,” he shrugged again as he took a seat at the table. “Or move out and not say anything at all. It’s amazing that I’ve chosen to be rebellious now, of all times.”

Anna smiled and nodded when Grey said that the sandwich was a good idea. “I know,” she commented cheerfully. Actually, now that she ordered something she was feeling much better in general. Sure, she still felt hungry and bone-achingly tired, but at least she knew she was about to get some food, which was sure to help with her energy. Besides that, Anna just liked eating. She was a true Weasley in that way. Once Grey got his food as well, the two made their way to a table in the corner. After she sat down, Anna unwrapped her food, taking a bite, closing her eyes and just enjoying it for a moment. She opened her eyes right before Grey started talking yet again. She nodded. “That’s true. You don’t have to tell your parents everything you’re doing.” She didn’t tell hers. Then again, the last time she did tell her parents something she was going to do, her father yelled at her. It didn’t matter. He couldn’t tell her what to do with her life. Not anymore. Luckily, Lucy gave her a place to stay with Oscar until the wedding so she had one less thing to worry about for the next while. She laughed, “I think we all need to be rebellious sometimes. Some people do it their entire lives, like me, so maybe your parents should appreciate the fact that you’ve waited so long for yours.” She chuckled again and took another bite. “I know for a fact my dad wishes I would just listen to him and do what he wants. Doesn’t mean that’s ever going to happen.” Especially if he continued to try and force her to do things his way. Anna wasn’t one to let others push her around, even her father. He had to earn the right to suggest what she should do, just like everyone else. grey xavier slater

@annelise “Not going to lie, I didn’t know you were secretly rebelling all these years,” Grey said between bites of his sandwich. That was news to him. He was sure she had mentioned prior to this conversation that she was discontent with the way her parents wanted her to go about things, but rebellion was a whole new addition to it. Maybe that was a positive to being a Weasley; there were so many crazy ones (Lily) that Anna could sneak right by everyone’s radar. Personally, he was more indecisive on the whole thing. The long term negative repercussions, meaning being written out of his parents’ wills or barred from returning home during the holidays, were minute in comparison to the many positives that could come out of finally cutting the umbilical cord that his parents were still trying to hold him back with. It wasn’t very Gryffindor of him to be weak willed like he was right now. Getting it said and done with was easier than flip-flopping back and forth for the foreseeable future.
As for his own current personal rebellion, there were plenty of things his parents didn’t know about. Things that weren’t any of their business at all. “It’s amazing that they think we need to listen after a certain age. They spend all those formidable years, teaching you how to think and act on your own, and then expect that to suddenly come to a stop when they want it to. Doesn’t make any sense to me…” he trailed off as the lid of his coffee cup was popped open and a cloud of steam flew into his face. Too hot still. He should have known better. “There are quite a few things I have to myself that they’ll never know about until I think they should. Moving out unannounced may very well be another one of those,” Grey shrugged as he carefully laid out the top on the table, allowing the coffee to cool off faster. If he really wanted to have a go at the drink, a cold air charm would put it at the perfect temperature in the blink of an eye. But that also defeated the purpose of getting the coffee and having to wait. “So what’s your most recent rebellious outburst? Has to be more interesting than mine.”

Anna grinned and shrugged when Grey said he had no idea that she was rebelling "all those years." "What can I say? I'm a ... closet rebel?" She laughed at her own ridiculousness. Honestly, it wasn't that Anna wanted to be rebellious. It was more the fact that her father was so controlling and determined that she do what he wanted that she couldn't help but be rebellious. Like many of her cousins, Anna had a mind of her own and didn't appreciate people telling her what to do, even her father. Of course, her refusals to do as he said just made him try and control her more and the cycle went on and on. At least she'd be getting out of it completely soon. She'd moved away for the summer, living with Lucy, and in the fall she and Oscar would be getting married. Hopefully that would make him stop. Anna snorted as Grey continued. "Parents don't make sense, as a general rule." Anna knew that not all parents were as controlling as her father, but considering that Grey was going through something that seemed pretty similar, maybe they were. "I think not telling parents certain things is a part of growing up. They don't need to know everything about our lives, especially when it comes to the things that we know they'd try to take control of." Which was part of the reason she wished she hadn't had to confront her parents about her engagement. She knew her father wouldn't like the idea, but she also couldn't imagine getting married without telling her mother. That was wrong. She grinned when Grey asked about her most rebellious outburst. "I guess that would have been about a week or so ago when I told my dad I was getting married in August," Anna rolled her eyes. "I knew he wouldn't like it, but I had to tell them and he actually FORBADE me from marrying Oscar, like he thought he could actually tell me not to and I'd do what he said." She shook her head, frowning as she remembered the argument. They'd both spent the better part of an hour yelling at one another until she stormed out. She hadn't gone back since. "What about yours? Or are you living it now?"grey xavier slater

@annelise Maybe rebellion in some fashion was part of every teenager’s life, whether they realized it or not. Grey had kind of figured there were certain parts of his last few years in school that could have counted towards it, with having threats of detentions or strolling through the corridors after hours. Hell, his whole ‘career’ as a journalist in school had called for that sort of thing. That was what he was supposed to be doing with that title. Bending the rules and getting the story no matter what, or whatever. Law enforcement was as far from that as he could get. The idea that he could do both, where he was an Auror but also a liaison for the paper on behalf of the Auror department, would take years, if not decades, to reach. That was an unreachable goal now that he had seen what it was like on the inside, not to mention a goal he had placed his own interests on and would certainly not be in favor with what his parents would want him to do. That had to be one of the first signs that he was going into the wrong field. “Guess that’s what I am right now then too,” he reasoned as Anna explained that not telling parents everything was part of life. If only they knew.
Grey looked up from his food as she casually mentioned her most recent disagreement with her dad, about getting married. That was the first he had heard about it. Not like he should have heard prior to today, but still. “You’re getting married? Jesus, and here I’m complaining about moving out of the house…my issue is nothing compared to yours.” He felt kind of bad, whining about something so petty. There was the chance that his parents would do the same thing to him if he ever mentioned he was dating Cecelia, and he knew for a fact her parents would have a word or two about him, but that still didn’t come close to Anna getting married. That came out at a whole new level that Grey wasn’t even close to getting to in life currently. “I mean, I’m kind of in a similar situation as well. In a way,” he started, pausing for a second to collect his thoughts and taking a deep inhale before continuing. “Not sure how obvious it was near the end of the school year, but Cecelia and I started, you know, dating,” he explained, though it felt more like an admission. As far as he knew, nobody else knew about that. “But still, congratulations. I don’t think I’d be able to get out of that conversation alive with mine. Gryffindor definitely didn’t bestow nearly as much bravery on me as I would have liked.”

It was interesting to Anna, the fact that Grey seemed somewhat disturbed by the fact that he wasn't telling his parents everything, though it was obvious that this wasn't an entirely new thing. Maybe it was the idea of keeping things from his parents intentionally. Either way, Anna was glad that she could be there for him, as someone to talk to. It was nice having another friend among the auror training group who felt similarly to her. It was also reassuring that she wasn't the only one seriously considering changing her plans after only a few months. "Welcome to the ranks of children who keep things from their parents," she teased with a smile. Anna didn't immediately register the surprised look on Grey's face, caught up by the fact that she was still mad at her dad for his reaction to her announcement. Shouldn't he have been proud of her? Or at least supportive? No, he refused to accept that Anna could make her own choices in life, a fact that never ceased to infuriate her. She gave a snort of laughter at Grey's response. "You're fine. I'd much rather be debating whether or not to move out than arguing with my dad about what I'm doing with my life." While she was extremely happy that she would be marrying Oscar in a few short months, Anna hated having to deal with her dad's reaction. It would be nice if moving out was the hardest conversation she had to have with him right now, which made her sort of envy Grey a bit. Not that she was planning on telling him that. Grey grabbed her attention again when he said he was in a similar situation as her. Anna looked at him curiously. "You are?" He started to talk about Cecelia and her eyes widened, a small smile forming. "You and Cecelia? That's great! Do ... your parents know?" Or anyone else, but since they were already talking about parents, they could start there. "Thanks." Anna laughed when he mentioned how he wasn't sure how that conversation would ever go with his parents. "Eh, it's not as hard as you'd think. Getting the courage to fight for what you want. I ... can't imagine my life without him, so I made my choice, whether or not my parents understand or even approve." Her father didn't, but that wasn't going to stop Anna. Not by a long shot. grey xavier slater

@annelise Rebellion seemed to be the ingredient he had been missing all these years; the special sauce, the secret spices, Grandma’s world-famous recipe that no one else could replicate. He had been too caught up in his newspaper and school, trying to balance what he and his parents wanted at the same time. That had been his first mistake. Being proactive and doing what he wanted to do, and what would ultimately make him happy, should have been his priority, instead of trying to live up to expectations. Anna had figured that out and even took it to the next level. He definitely wasn’t ready for that sort of commitment in his life, but his relationship was just as secret and potentially rage-induced on his parents’ end. Assuming they had it out for vampires. Becoming one himself in order to spite them didn’t sound all that bad either, though he was sure he would have to recruit one other than Cecelia. “Well, it’s a little late for him to be doing that, isn’t it? You’re both adults, so he’s going to have to get used to adult decisions being made.” Grey didn’t necessarily like being called an adult, considering he had been sitting in classes at Hogwarts only a few months ago. But he was one and so was Anna. If they were expected to get jobs, they could move out of their family homes and marry whomever they wanted.
He wasn’t sure if he regretted telling Anna about his current relationship or if it was airing more on the side of embarrassment because he had never heard himself say it out loud. Regardless, it was something he was going to have to get used to, especially if it came up in conversation with his parents’ one of these days. Eventually they were going to be nosey about all of his nights spent doing drills. That would probably signify his exit from the house. “Not yet. The whole meet the parents thing needs some fine tuning for both of us, I think,” he grimaced. He wasn’t in a place to talk bad about Cecelia’s parents when he had never met them before. She made them sound like the typical pureblood family, but seeing and hearing were two completely different things. “I’ll find it eventually. I believe we each have a certain time for it. Mine might be leaving the program and going to the Prophet. Or it could be ten years from now with something completely unrelated. Who knows,” he shrugged. “Think we should head back for that next lesson? I do enjoy trying to curse the instructors every now and then.”
