It had been a while since Kaylee had gotten around to playing her ukulele. She hadn’t even gotten it out of its case until that morning, but she was glad that she had. She’d been in Britain long enough that she was definitely homesick. A beach thousands of miles away from home wasn’t the same as one in Hawaii, not really. Kaylee missed the feeling of the sunshine to which she was so accustomed, bright and freely flowing instead of trickling down between the buildings of Diagon Alley.
Kaylee glanced up at the sky from where she sat on the step of a vacant building. (If she was going to play, she figured, it was better to do it somewhere outside of the Leaky Cauldron.) It looked like the rain was going to hold off, she thought, as she began to pluck at the strings. She played idly for a few seconds trying to think of what struck her fancy.
A moment later, she knew precisely what she wanted to play and began to sing along softly to the familiar tune. “We stand as one united / Against the Puritan,” she began, knowing the lyrics by heart. We draw our inspiration / From good witch Morrigan, / For she was persecuted…” Before she had even reached the next part of the song, Kaylee began to laugh internally at how ironic it was to sing about “distant Ireland,” which wasn’t all that distant from her now. “By common wandless men, / So she fled from distant Ireland / And so our school began…”
Fully intending to continue to play and sing the Ilvermorny alma mater, Kaylee went on. “Oh, Ilvermorny-Massachusetts, / We choo-choose it, / We choo—” She stopped abruptly at the sight of someone’s having approached her and looked up, setting her ukulele back onto her lap. Hopefully, she thought, she hadn’t been disturbing anyone.
OOC: Sing along!

Wyatt had been struggling to adjust to the differences - London was far different to what he was used to, and while sure there was magic all around the world, that didn't make the places the same at all. Not to mention his own... condition that in itself made things harder. He wasn't sure how the people he'd soon be going to school with would deal with him and this other side of who he was. As much as he at times hated it, it was part of who he was for almost as long as he could remember. He now found himself wondering around Diagon Alley, a little curious about the shops until he heard a familiar tune that made him think of 'home'. For Ilvermorny always had been a second home to him, the loss of his school for his final year of education was something that hit him hard this summer. But there it was, the familiar school song that brought a smile to his face. Without thinking about it he followed the sound, listening to the lyrics until they suddenly stopped. Seeing the girl had stopped, Wyatt gave himself a slight push - continuing the song as he stepped closer, " The wizard school supreme, Your castle walls, they kept us safe..The days with you, a dream. " His lips quirked as he sang that line - for indeed, the castle walls had kept them safe. Although now the school was damaged and they were far from those same walls, "You taught us all our magic, And now one thing's quite clear..."[ kaylee māhealani mahi'ai ]

Kaylee’s face lit up a little as she heard someone else join in, someone else who knew the lyrics of the Ilvermorny school song and went on singing it even after she’d stopped. She recognized the other singer as a boy in the year above her in school, Wyatt, and she listened to his continuation for a line or two before picking up her ukulele and the place that they had reached in the song.
“You taught us all our magic,” she sang along with Wyatt, happy to be lost in her thoughts of Ilvermorny with somebody who knew the school—their school—just as well. “And now one thing's quite clear…”
She smiled, happier than she realized for company besides her brother and sister. As much as she loved them, their little room in the Leaky Cauldron was making her feel claustrophobic. Pausing in the song just long enough to scoot over and pat the spot on the step next to her in an invitation for Wyatt to sit, Kaylee thought that it would feel strange not to finish it before conversing.
“Where’er we roam…” she continued, not that any of them could have anticipated being transplanted to Britain during any of the many times they had sung those same words over the years. “Where’er we roam, / Our one true home…”
Finding herself beginning to choke on her words a little, Kaylee stopped and shook her head. She looked out at the street, wondering how she hadn’t drawn more attention. No one in Diagon Alley knew what she was singing, she reminded herself. No one except her own classmates. “I miss it there. Just knowing we aren’t going back this year…” she said to Wyatt, her voice having lost its typical vitality. They weren’t going back because they couldn’t go back. Maybe by January, she thought, MACUSA would decide that Ilvermorny could reopen… But that was assuming that everything would be safe again, and Kaylee tried not to hope for the impossible.

Wyatt's own face lit up as he sang along, the song familiar and comforting really. Although for him it was a little bit strange to be singing at all in the middle of Diagon Alley - but, he had been missing Ilvermorny and he had been missing his home. The song brought a familiar comfort to him - and he happily sang along to the rest of the song with her. “You taught us all our magic, and now one thing's quite clear…” he sang in time with her, their voices easily flowing together. While it was extremely rare for Wyatt to sing - he wasn't honestly all that bad at it. “Where’er we roam…Where’er we roam…” As the song began to come to an end he found himself almost feeling sad, the thought that they wouldn't be singing it at Hogwarts - instead likely they'd be singing the Hogwart's school song. “Our one true home…Our one and own ..Is Ilvermorny dear” He gave a small sigh, offering her a small smile. Her words made a lot of sense to him, "I've been feeling the same actually." Wyatt spoke lightly, moving slightly beside her, his hair falling into his eyes as he looked down, "For me - its really weird. I have been at Ilvermorny since my first year - but now my final year.. I'm going to be at a whole different school." His eyes looked back up, taking in the people passing them by, "I guess though - while its rather weird and I miss it, this could also be fun as well... " He tried to smile again, "You know - make the most of it I guess. We should at least try right?" [ kaylee māhealani mahi'ai]

Wyatt helped her to finish the song, which proclaimed—as it always had—that their “one true home” was Ilvermorny. It was, and it would always be, and at least it hadn’t been destroyed for good.
At least she wasn’t the only one who missed it; most of the people from school whom she had spoken to since coming to Britain had expressed similar thoughts. Wyatt looked down as he sat beside her, saying that, for him, it was “really weird”; he had been at Ilvermorny since his first year and was going to have to spend his last year at a completely different school.
Most of them hadn’t really had a choice; unless their parents were somehow skilled enough to educate them at home, it was either Hogwarts or losing a year of valuable schooling. At least she and her siblings would be able to graduate from Ilvermorny, she thought, though she understood how strange it would feel for the students in the year just above her, as Wyatt had just said. Would they resent the people who had been in the grade above them for having gotten the full Ilvermorny experience? Would they resent the students who were in their sixth year—like her—who would get to go back?
Thinking positively about the situation they were in, Wyatt added that maybe this year would be fun, too. He suggested that they make the most of it, and Kaylee nodded.
“The people who were at the beach party were all really nice,” she voiced hopefully. She wasn’t worried about meeting people, really; it was everything else that went with it. What would the year have in store for them, and how would being in a school with an entire school full of other students change them all? A day at the beach was one thing, even the summer… but an entire year at Hogwarts, where so many things had already gone wrong? “It… I don’t know,” she told Wyatt. “I just wish that MACUSA could fix everything and that we could go home.”

It was both comforting and a little sad to finish singing the song, it was such a familiar thing - the words flowing easily and soothing the feeling of loss he had been feeling since the news had been spoken. But it was sad as well - a bitter sweetness he supposed, for this year he wouldn't be returning to his 'one true home', his education would be finishing at a different school. He knew at least, neither of them were alone - there were many other students feeling much the same as they were, although none were exactly the same of course - it was comforting to know that they wouldn't be alone in this adjustment. Still, he knew it would be important to make the most out of what they were going through - to push through and smile, to make the most out of the situation. "I didn't go to the beach party.. " he spoke lightly, looking back at her curiously, "I spent that day exploring with my sisters a bit, one of my sisters is in the same boat as me - seventh year at Hogwarts, but - my other sister.. she's only a fourth year. We're sticking together through this - even though I wish the same as you. But, I'm sure they are doing that they can and - we have to hope for the best right?" He sat back slightly, he had his own concerns about Hogwarts - along with wondering if they would be safe, he was terrified of not being able to keep an eye on his little sister, they had been in the same house back at Ilvermorny - but it might not be the same at Hogwarts. Wyatt told her that he hadn’t gone to the beach party. She didn’t think that she had seen him there, but it sounded as though he had had a fun time even without the party. He had explored with his sisters—one in his own year and the other in her fourth year, like Kaylee’s own sister. They were “sticking together” through it all, and Kaylee could relate to that, too. She was the oldest child in the family, and that also meant that she had to take on a more parental role with her two school-age siblings. They were close enough in age that it wasn’t as much of a stressor as it could have been, but she couldn’t lie; she missed her parents and her two younger brothers who were still back home.
Expressing that he was sure that MACUSA was doing the best that they could to ensure that Ilvermorny could get up and running again, Wyatt added, “We have to hope for the best, right?”
“Yeah,” Kaylee nodded. ”We do.” They had to. They couldn’t allow this one little bump in the road to derail them. “I mean, I wish that my parents and little brothers could have come with us, but I know they could only afford to send us three.” It wasn’t feasible. Even if it had been, her father would have to get used to all of the cobblestones with his prostheses… “I’m happy that they could, because I love school and wouldn’t want to miss a year, but it’s really hard when they’re so far away, and…” She sighed. “I guess I’m just homesick.”

Honestly, parties weren't something that Wyatt tended to go towards - beach party or some other kind. He found them a little overwhelming at times - with so many other people around, he felt out of sorts. So he tended to avoid them as often as he could. Still, it didn't mean he wouldn't or couldn't have any fun. He had a blast with his sisters and couldn't imagine his life without them. They were his constant through all this change - he only hoped he could protect them in this new place they were in for the next year. Still, he had to hold onto his hope. Things would get better - they had to right? He gave a slight shrug, peering back at the girl with a smile. It seemed he wasn't alone in his worries - which, on one hand was a bit of a worry - cause it meant others were worried as well. But - it was a comfort as well, to know he wasn't alone. "My sisters are here with me - but our mother isn't. She's still back in America, so - I get it a bit." he gave a slight nod, a faint sigh escaping him, "I think its a normal feeling.. to be a little homesick, it doesn't matter how far away you are - home will always be home you know?" "My sisters are here with me,” Wyatt explained to her, “but our mother isn't.” It sounded as though they were in a similar situation to her own, which was sad for them but a little bit reassuring to her at the same time. “She's still back in America, so—I get it a bit.” Kaylee had to wonder how many others had come all the way from home without their parents; they couldn’t have been the only ones. Still, she didn’t think that most people would opt to send their children away from their own country for the summer without supervision if they could afford it.
Probably, she guessed, some more students from Ilvermorny would be arriving closer to September. Maybe it would be a scramble for them to get their books and uniforms and everything on time, but she almost preferred the thought of that to the situation that she was in. Everything that she knew was at least an ocean away—two oceans, factoring in that what she held most dear to her was an ocean away from Ilvermorny anyway. “Yeah,” she nodded her head. She hadn’t heard too much from home, given the distance, but she hoped that everything was alright there.
“I think it’s a normal feeling… to be a little homesick,” Wyatt said in response to her comment. He said that it didn’t matter how far away you were; home would always be home.
That resonated deep into Kaylee’s core. “I think I’m… maybe worried about that?” “Scared” wasn’t the right word, but worry was definitely what had filled her mind. “So much of who I am,” she spoke quietly, “is where I’m from.” Kaylee found herself biting down on her lip. At least at Ilvermorny, people understood that she was Hawaiian. And at least they knew something about it, even if that was a bare minimum of surfing and hula. “And I feel like it’s going to be so much harder,” she went on, “now that I’m here.”

Wyatt had wondered himself, how many others were in this type of situation - where their parents were so far away, but they were here alone. Although he supposed he wasn't completely alone - he had his sisters of course. But it was still a strange experience and he felt responsible to help keep his sisters safe and well. They were his responsibility to protect. It was a lot on his shoulders, along with everything else - but he was also glad to have the time to try and settle in even if it wasn't all that easy, and even if he longed for home as well. He glanced back up, curious at the words she spoke, he offered a small smile of understanding, "I get it, I think its normal to worry - so much is different here," he paused - while he didn't fully get it, her culture wasn't the same as how he was different - the wolf in him was very much part of who he was, not everyone understood that, "But.. you're not alone and some people will understand who you are is part of where you are from, remember its not just us transfering and ending up in this situation, you have friends who will be here too. And you got me now too - I mean, we're both here too." He gave a small nod, offering another small smile. He was glad he had heard her and decided to join in. kaylee māhealani mahi'ai

Kaylee supposed that everyone had a connection to where they had originated, wherever they considered that to be. The fears she had about being so far from Hawaii were tied into her homesickness, she hoped, and not based in anything real. If anything happened while she was gone…
“I get it,” Wyatt reassured her. “I think it’s normal to worry—so much is different here.” That was true; it wasn’t just her culture shock to get used to. “But… you're not alone and some people will understand who you are is part of where you are from,” Wyatt continued, reminding her that they would have friends who would be there, too. “And you got me now too—I mean, we're both here too.”
Nodding, Kaylee smiled in response to the smile that Wyatt gave her. “You’re right,” she told him. “We’re from Ilvermorny, and we’ve gotta stick together.”

While in many ways Wyatt couldn't sympathize with being that extra distance away from him, in other ways he could kind of understand. Before he had his family, he hadn't fully even had a home - so now even being a little away from home, well - it was rather terrifying if he was honest. He mostly missed his family though, he missed them more than he would really admit. Still he was trying to be positive, he wasn't alone - he knew that for sure, and neither was Kaylee. "Ilvermorny sticks together." He gave a small nod, shooting another grin her way, "No matter what happens at Hogwarts, we'll always be a team cause we're the Ilvermorny kids, still - I'm also a little excited to see how everything is - to learn things the way they do, it's got to be a little interesting right?" kaylee māhealani mahi'ai

“Ilvermorny sticks together,” Wyatt echoed her sentiment, grinning her way again and asserting that—no matter what happened to them at Hogwarts—they would remain a “team” because of the fact that they had come from Ilvermorny. Kaylee smiled, herself, and hoped that would be true. She didn’t think that the move would make everyone from Ilvermorny best friends with one another, but knowing that there were other people who had her back because of the fact that they had come from the same school was nice.
Still, said Wyatt, he was excited to see how Hogwarts did things.
“Oh, yeah,” Kaylee agreed. It would be interesting, without a doubt. “What are you most looking forward to, Wyatt?” she asked. “I’m looking forward to the classes, but I hope that we aren’t way ahead or behind.”
