ONDINA WAS SHOCKED TO LEARN OF KASSIAN'S REASONING. It was... dull. She expected more. Something exciting. She had to admit it was a little disappointing to hear the perfunctory. 'Nothing better'. What a cop out. Ondina wouldn't do anything that didn't serve a personal purpose. But she didn't let this show on her face, she simply laughed. Sweet and a little breathy, as usual.
"Well, I have to admit I'm shocked." Ondina said, shrugging her shoulders casually. Her bag clutched at her front in two hands. "I expected something a little more spirited. You're so..." She hummed under her breath, thinking of what she was saying. "You seemed so sure before." She settled with, actually interested in the direction of the conversation. It didn't make sense, didn't add up with the version of him he displayed.
"'Everything in a department is important,' Ondina." Ondina imitated from before, lowering her sweet tone of voice to a gruff, off kilter echo of Kassian's previous claim. She smiled to convey the joke of it, in case he was slow to the fact. As practised as Kassian's words now appeared. "As for your accent... well," Ondina rolled her eyes and lifted one shoulder an inch. "I didn't want to insult you by asking, you seem so..." Ondina tilted her head from side to side, tutting once, "Private."
But he'd opened a door and Ondina wasn't the type to hold back. "So where are you from, then?"

Ondina said that she was shocked by his reasoning, and Kassian furrowed his brow. He didn’t understand why others didn’t understand his passion for his work. Even if it hadn’t been his dream from childhood, that didn’t mean that he couldn’t be passionate about what he did, and he was. He was making the world a better place, quite literally on a global scale, and what was more than some people could say. “When you do not have a better option, you make do with what you have.” For him, making do had been finding a job that he loved in a place where he would get paid. That wasn’t a bad thing. And as for love itself… well, Kassian didn’t have a better option than Jane, but he wasn’t content to just make do with love the way he had with his job. He didn’t think he’d stumble into something great twice.
Kassian really hoped that the girl’s imitation wasn’t what he actually sounded like, because she sounded… well, weird. He wasn’t that weird-sounding. Ondina said that she didn’t want to insult him by asking, and Kassian raised his shoulder in a shrug. People asked him all the time where he was from, and often it was more the delivery of the question than the question itself that matter. Ondina was right about one thing, though – Kassian was a private person. She asked where he was from, and Kassian paused as he stepped off the elevator. That had been an uncomfortably long ride, nut nothing was about to get any better. At least he wouldn’t have to purposefully look away now. “Mexico.” He answered shortly as they walked towards the Ministry entrance.

ONDINA SURMISED THAT THAT WAS THE KEY DIFFERENCE. She would never make do. It was simply not an option for her. Foremost, she had been given a lot of leeway growing up. Being sick often meant 'making do' was a fact of life. Ondina had never been content with this. She'd been 'making do' with her body because it was a necessity only. A necessity for her to surpass it and be more. For her, no matter if she didn't see it yet, better was always an option.
Ondina said nothing to the fact, simply humming lightly before turning her breath. She said nothing because nothing nice was sure to come out. And for now, while it served her, she intended to stay as sweet as possible. Insulting his poor life choices wasn't going to win her any points.
The elevator doors were open now, and it meant Ondina was forced to keep pace with great big long legs once again. A thing her small, and ailing body did not enjoy. But she did, minimising her chatter and the volume of her voice in the meantime. "I've always wanted to go to Mexico!" Ondina said, releasing one hand on her bag so that she could swing it from the other. Almost leisurely, but with calculated purpose.
"It's supposed to be beautiful, is it beautiful?" She asked, turning her head to look at him. It was absolute rubbish. Ondina hated heat, and a climate like that would surely set her teeth on edge. "Why on earth would you leave a place like that for a place like... here." She said, forcing distaste in to the end of her tone. "We have horrid weather." And that was the purpose of her lies. So that she could gently ease a question in, covered in the frills of meaningless beauty and fake adventure.

Everyone and their uncle seemed to want to go to Mexico. They always thought of places like Cancún, with bright blue waters and white beaches and beautiful people. Kassian wasn’t going to deny that his country was beautiful, but he wished that people didn’t covet it for its beaches. He wished that they wanted something more – the cities, the people, the food, the culture. There was so much more! Now was not a time to get frustrated on foreign perceptions of Mexico, though. He wanted a clear head, and that was not a head-clearing activity. Not to mention the fact that he didn’t want to lose his temper in front of Ondina – or anyone, for that matter. He took a deep breath and calmed himself so that he could listen to what Ondina had to say further.
Kassian nodded when she asked if Mexico was beautiful. It was beautiful, and there was no way around that. But then she made the comment about the weather, and Kassian felt like the wind was knocked out of him. It took all of his concentration to keep walking. He hadn’t told many people about the blizzard that had killed his parents, so of course it was natural that Ondina would assume that the weather in Mexico was all sunshine, all the time, and that he’d have no problem with such a comment. “The weather is not as good as you think.” He commented, his voice tight. “I moved to Brazil before coming here.” Kassian added, though he still omitted the reason for either of his major moves.

SHE COULD TELL SOMETHING HAD CHANGED. His gait was the same, his face the same, but something tensed in his shoulders. He was a little stiffer, which was truly saying something because Ondina thought the man was as stiff as a board beforehand. It was something she'd said, something about Mexico. Maybe he wasn't buying it. Her sweeter than pie charade. Ondina vowed to tread a little more carefully, turning her head to face the front, her smile pulling down at the edges slightly. The only physical tell.
The weather. He disagreed about the weather. Ondina wasn't buying it. His voice was wound tight as a drum. But she didn't say anything. They were almost at the entrance, and she was sure he'd flee as soon as he could. She wouldn't stop him. It wasn't in her nature. But it was far from over. There was still time. Still facing the front, Ondina let it appear as if her attention had drifted before turning her head sharply.
"Oh... Brazil?" She said dully, lifting her smile, but shifting her eyes over and around so that if he were to look she'd look as if she were drifting. "Now why'd you do that?" She completely sidestepped the weather comment. It dug at something deeper and she knew for a fact that it was a wound to be prodded gently. Even if it wasn't her nature, she didn't want to scare him away. She'd only just got him truly talking. "A well travelled man making a leap all the way here," Ondina mused, as if swithering with the idea. "You confuse me, Kassian."

Ondina had to keep on prodding at him, and Kassian was glad that his control of his emotions was ironclad, otherwise he would have snapped at her by now. She asked why he had moved to Brazil, and he let out a small sigh. “When you do not have a better option, you make do with what you have.” He repeated to her. Going to Brazil hadn’t been a choice, and the older he got the more he questioned the legality of what his foster parents at the time had done, because he was fairly certain that he hadn’t been supposed to leave Mexico. It didn’t matter, though; the long and short of it was that Kassian’s choices were to go to Brazil or risk being put in another foster family and be bounced around until he reached the age of majority – none of which he was going to tell Ondina, because she didn’t need the leverage.
The redhead said that she was confused by him, and Kassian shrugged. He didn’t owe her his entire life story just because she decided to ask for it. “Britain had jobs, and at the time, it was safe.” He had expected to live his whole life in a sort of glorified monotony, keeping the world safe rather than making it safe again. That had changed in the past few years, but at the time, Kassian’s life had been about as good as it could be, all things considered. He had gotten his fresh start, and that was all that he asked for.

EVEN ONDINA COULD TELL WHEN A WELL WAS RUNNING DRY. With all his secrets and his high powered job, he'd given just about enough for that night. Having tolerated more than she had even expected. The repeating of a previous sentiment cemented it for her. She sighed, turning away without a word. If he said so, he said so. But she still thought it was absolute rubbish.
Closing in on the exit from the Ministry, Ondina had reached for one final slither of information. Most people would explain, clear confusion. But Kassian just shrugged. A stab of irritation lanced through her, but she kept her face blank. "Not so safe any more, though." She said, her voice neutral but a spark flaming in her eye. She turned away.
"Thank you for walking me out, Kassian." She allowed him to hold the door open for her before stepping out. The evening chill was bitter and Ondina huddled deep in to her coat. "It's been my pleasure chatting with you. Goodnight." She finished, reaching out to grab his arm and give it a light and familiar squeeze before she turned and marched off in to the night. Not a lick of fear or hesitation on her person.

Kassian just nodded when Ondina said that Britain wasn’t so safe anymore. He knew that now, but at the time he had moved to Britain, he hadn’t known his own powers to tell the future. Even when things had started going sour, he had assumed that his sense of impending doom was his own paranoia, and not anything to do with the happenings in the world. He wasn’t keen on sharing that he was a clairvoyant any more than he was keen on sharing his past, though, so Kassian kept mum on that point.
Ondina thanked him for walking her out, and Kassian tried hard not to sigh of relief. He had thought he was going to have to walk her all the way home, wherever home was, and that would have made things exceptionally awkward, especially if she had invited him in. The redhead said it was a pleasure chatting with him, and Kassian jerked his head in a tight nod. She reached out and squeezed his arm, as if they were old friends, and Kassian tensed slightly, his words stopped by Ondina’s motions. Before he could recover himself, she was gone in the night, and he was left blissfully alone at the entrance to the Ministry.
