ELI CONSTANTLY FELT LIKE A CHILD BEING SCOLDED. It might have been Blair's tone, or their narrowed dislike, but every single time Eli seemed to propose a difference of opinion he felt like it was a terrible bother. He'd never felt more stupid for having an opinion, and he'd nearly failed Charms twice before.
"I dunno, man." Eli said without thinking, realising a second too late that 'man' was probably no better than 'dude'. "- I mean Blair." He interjected before continuing, still unwilling to be nasty, although it was surely tempting as he continued, "I think there's a huge difference between 'different enthusiasm' and just whatever it is your showing." He held up two dirty palms and shrugged, "but that's just my opinion."
He frowned stupidly as Blair bluntly asked if he wanted them to go. Eli scoffed, "you're joking right?" He asked, completely unsure. "You brought us here, what am I supposed to do if you do that? I have literally no idea where we are right now."
Back to furiously scooping dirt, Eli realised he really wanted to know where he'd went wrong. What is was he did that was so bad it'd warranted such strong disgust. "What did I do?" He asked, sitting back and reaching for the box, if only to measure how much deeper he should dig. "It's like you hate me and you don't even know me..."

This was simply insufferable. Perhaps the only good thing was that Eli had gotten it through his thick skull that nicknames, especially masculine nicknames, were not Blair’s cup of tea. They did somewhat regret giving their real name, though – it would have been amusing if the boy was left thinking that their name was something ridiculous, like Reginald. But Blair wasn’t the sort who was amused by petty lies for long, and it would just degrade Eli’s already low opinion of them… not that they cared. “I’m sorry that you’re not able to accurately read my emotions, then.” Blair sniffed to Eli. It wasn’t their fault that he couldn’t see that they were excited – not for what was happening in the present, but for what it would allow them to do in the future.
“That doesn’t answer my question.” Blair replied patiently when Eli asked if they were joking. Their knowledge of the location they were at had nothing to do with Eli’s wishes on whether or not Blair departed the scene. And if Eli was only keeping them as transportation, that made Blair more likely to want to leave – no one used a Pucey, especially not someone as obviously unintelligent as the boy in front of him was.
Eli continued scooping the dirt to make the grave for the owl, and Blair continued watching. Eli asked what he had done, and Blair just shook their head. It wasn’t about anything that the boy had done wrong… he just hadn’t done anything right, and Blair expected more than just mediocrity from the people they chose as friends and allies. That was why they didn’t have any friends and allies. “Do you care to get to know me?” For all of Eli’s whining about how Blair didn’t like him, he wasn’t doing much better at being friendly.

ALIGNING THE BOX IN THE HOLE HE'D DUG, Eli deduced how much deeper and wider he had to make the hole before carefully placing the box aside once more. He scooped more carefully now, focusing full on the task so that Blair wouldn't see him frowning so hard. He didn't want it to get to him, being disliked, but it did. Even when it came to someone like Blair, whom Eli probably wouldn't see much of.
"No, I don't want you to go." Eli said grumbled, fighting the urge to roll his eyes. Instead, he shaped the walls of the grave, flattening the damp dirt with the palm of his hand. It was about deep enough and wide enough, with just enough excess for swelling or moisture. When he reached for the box again, he stopped. Did he want to know Blair more? "I could," He said defiantly. "But you didn't say you didn't hate me, so maybe I shouldn't." Eli placed the box in to the grave. And slowly began scooping handfuls of dirt over it.

Eli said that he didn’t want Blair to go, and if Blair had been the type for warm, fuzzy emotions, it might have made them feel warm and fuzzy. Instead, though, they just rolled their eyes behind Eli’s back. Blair just didn’t get why Eli seemed to want them to be pals – they were obviously two different people, with two different perspectives on life that would likely never mesh well. Eli was fascinated with life, and Blair was fascinated with death. Eli cared what people thought; Blair did not. They were diametrically opposed; foils, some might say.
As for whether or not the boy wanted to get to know them better, he said that he could, but maybe he shouldn’t. Blair rolled their eyes again; that was one of the most noncommittal answers they had ever heard, and they were well-versed in politics. “Are we almost done here?” Blair asked, watching as Eli began shoveling the dirt on top of the makeshift grave. For all they knew, he was going to insist that they have a full funeral service, with hymns and everything.

ELI KNEW IT WAS PROBABLY A LOST CAUSE. But, he'd always been a bit of a trier. No matter that it was batted off at every possible angle, Blair often addressing a completely different angle whenever Eli dared to edge toward asking. Toward some kind of familiarity. It was a lost cause, so why did he even bother?
"Yeah, we're almost done." He said flatly, flattening earth on top of the unmarked grave. "You could go grab some rocks, or something, if you want." He added, lifting a hand to rub at his nose with the back. "To mark it?" He looked up then, the chill having turned the tip of his nose numb. His cheeks ruddy. He hadn't taken a coat, it had been sunny in Diagon Alley. His gobstopper was still in the front pocket of his pants.

Eli said that they were almost done, which relieved Blair. They hadn’t expected to go through this much work just to get a specimen. Honestly, they probably would have been better off waiting in the alley and seeing if the cat returned to commit another murder… but it was too late now. “I won’t grab rocks.” Blair scoffed. “I’m a wizard.” They told Eli pointedly. Being magical meant that they didn’t need to do tedious tasks like going to pick up rocks – they could just conjure something, or at the very least summon the rocks instead of stooping down to pick them up. In the end, Blair did end up using a summoning charm, which resulted in one rather large stone being placed at the head of the grave. “Are you going to say any words? Demand an inscription?” Blair asked. It didn’t matter what Eli did – the body would be gone by that time the next day anyways.

ELI'S FACE SOURED, Blair's tone hitting a nerve. "Yeah," he snapped, hands on his thighs as he scowled up at Blair. "And so am I." Eli realised suddenly that Blair didn't see him as an equal. He should have noticed before. Should have seen the signs, but it made sense. "But you don't need magic for everything," He said plainly, shaking his head with a scoff. "What, you use magic to wipe your ass for you too?"
He leaned forward and patted the earth, compacting it aggressively. He was ready to go home. He was ready for this whole ordeal to be over. Eli hadn't felt so confusingly insulted and frustrated in his entire life. He'd never met another person like Blair. With that tone and those opinions. His decisions as unpredictable as his answers.
"No," He spat, the summoned rock thunking against the ground, aware that Blair was being condescending. He straightened it carefully, with his hands and not his wand. "I think we're done here now." And Eli stood, mentally preparing himself for that same journey, gripping someone who disliked him and who Eli realised, he didn't like very much either.

Blair didn’t care that Eli felt the need to ridicule them for using their gifts. What was the point in magic if it didn’t make life easier? They were tempted to snipe something at Eli about it being impractical to use magic to wipe – there were too many delicate things in that general vicinity for something magical to handle it – but figured that was exactly what the boy was getting at. He thought that he was being funny or intelligent, probably, but he was neither of those things, hence why Blair was so frustrated with Eli. No matter. It was all almost over, and that gave Blair a feeling of zen. They were going to make it through this without committing a murder.
Eli straightened the rock that Blair had summoned, after which he proclaimed that they were done now. Blair scoffed – really, straightening the rock to prove his moral superiority? Who did this boy think he was? That was the straw that broke the camel’s back, so to speak; Blair was not going to be embracing Eli ever again, not even to Apparate them back. “We are indeed.” Blair replied. They smiled at Eli, a feral smile, before whirling away… alone.

ELI WAS MORE THAN READY TO LEAVE. He'd stood, dusting dirt from his hands on to his jeans with a sigh. One last journey and they could part ways. It would be over. But even before it happened Eli knew something was wrong. As if the atmosphere shifted around Blair. Their whole demeanour changing as something occurred to him.
"What...?" Eli said, looking over his shoulder in case it was something behind him. But no, because when he looked back around it was just in time to see Blair's face twist in it to a feral smile before their entire body wobbled, folding between plains. Without Eli. "No!" He yelled, as if to reach out. But Blair was gone. And he was alone. In a forest. With no idea where that particular forest was even located. "Shit!" He bellowed, closing his eyes and thumping a closed fist against his head. He was really screwed now.
