Katherine was on Hogsmeade village with her family. Apparently this was close to the school. Her parents wanted to see the village before signing permission slips for their children to visit the village during the school year. They had been holding from shop to shop all morning, and Katherine finally had broken off from them and was doing some exploring on her own. The village was quaint, cute and would be a nice break from school, she supposed. She wasn't incredibly interested in frivolities, but the thought of taking a nice walk with Lance didn't seem too bad. This tour of the village would be much more interesting if he was there, she thought. She walked down the street, assessing the buildings from the outside. Her family had gone into The Three Broomsticks to get a nice cool drink, but Katherine stayed out. lily luna potter

@katie Being so close to Hogwarts during the summer left Lily with an unexplainable feeling. On one hand, she didn’t want to be anywhere close to the castle, the outer boundaries of Hogsmeade being too close for comfort. On the other, she found herself absent mindedly walking back towards the path that connected the wizarding town to the school. She had visited the town during the summer before, so it wasn’t like this was some revelation she suddenly had today. It had always been this way. Her feet had a mind of their own most of the time, and covering the distance from shop to shop was met with them veering back towards where they felt they were supposed to be going. The repercussions for sneaking onto the grounds during the summer probably wouldn’t be the best for her, so she kept reminding herself that today was not the day to get kicked out of school. Especially with only two terms left. If she even made it that far. There were some days where going back to Hogwarts felt like a chore that she never wanted to do again. Everyone was too happy there, herself included. Hiding from reality didn’t solve her long term problems at all, which kinda sucked.
The trip to Hogsmeade today was slightly different. Lily had been granted permission to apparate there to go to Honeyduke’s, mostly because she had been nagging literally anyone that lent her their ear. At some point her mum had relented and she snapped out of the house so fast that she hadn’t even planned an entire day around the expedition. Going to Honeyduke’s and coming right back seemed like a waste of time, even if the round trip could be done in under an hour. There were other people milling about, but no one that she seemed to recognize. Magical families from around the world that wanted to get a glimpse of Hogwarts probably came during the summer to avoid the crowds. It was quite the spectacle after all. Trying to be a little more upbeat as she strolled down the main street of Hogsmeade, Lily passed by the Broomsticks, slowing down just enough to see if she recognized any faces through the window. Nope, no one. Her head snapping back to looking straight ahead, she spotted a girl that looked like she was old enough to be a student. Lily knew she had two options: ignore the girl completely, or be friendly and strike up a conversation. For all she knew, it could be an acquaintance. Biting down on her lip as she got closer, she decided to go with the second option. It was time to be a little more positive in her life. “Hey there,” she said as she walked up next to the girl, still a few feet behind. “Looks a lot different without everyone here, doesn’t it?”

Katherine turned to look at the person who spoke to her, shrugging at the words. Ick, that accent. She was one of them. Well, obviously. Most people would be. "Never been here with everyone," she said, laying her New York accent on a little bit thicker to make a point. She couldn't blame the girl for not knowing she was American. In the US, Katherine often assumed people were American. Well, not in New York City, though, because everyone was everything there. It was a wonderful place for that reason. Even the British people there weren't annoying. But, there was less of them. She hated their tea time and there happy little rainy afternoons. They were just so... blech. This girl seemed... alright, so far, after only hearing a few words out of her. No doubt she was a student, like Katherine. "Will you be attending Hogwarts in the fall, then?" she asked, trying to keep her tone light rather than quite as harsh and bold as it was a moment ago. lily luna potter

@katie Lily cocked her head to the side, a habit that was becoming all too often with her lately. She was letting a little too much canine influence her these days, which while fun, also led her to look like more of a dummy than she normally was. Her furrowed brow was quickly replaced with a grin as he heard the girl in front of her talk, and subsequently turn around. This was a new person! An American! “My mistake,” Lily continued her cheesy grin as she picked up her pace so she was now walking right next to the girl. New people were always so cool, especially when they didn’t know who she was. It kind of helped in times like this, where they weren’t there to judge or know every detail about her life, and where she could revert back to how she used to be. This sort of thing had occurred a few times already during the summer, and while Lily had been apprehensive at first about interacting with them, these new faces had provided her with a breath of fresh air whenever she felt like life was trying to choke her out of existence.
The question about going to Hogwarts in the fall had Lily’s eyes greedily looking to the side at the castle, which was always in frame no matter where she was in Hogsmeade. “Mhmm,” she said with a nod. “Made it through six years, so might as well finish it off. With a bang, of course,” Lily shrugged. Unfortunately there was no telling what the fall term was going to bring. Pretending things were going to be like they used to be was useless now, because they weren’t anymore. That would be a colossal mistake to make. “I’m Lily, by the way,” she stated, holding her hand out to the other girl. “Nice to meet you.”

She said it was her mistake and Katherine waved a hand to dismiss it, but kept walking, the girl now beside her. She said she had done six years at school, which meant she was Katherines age. She introduced herself and Katherine stopped, looking down at her and and then giving it a firm and quick shake. "Katherine," she said, not saying that it was nice to meet this girl. She didn't really care for meeting anyone, they had to prove themselves worthy of her attention to get that sort of compliment. "I was thinking of walking to that Shrieking Shack. You know the way?" she asked, raising an eyebrow at the girl. It wasn't all that bad having a guide, even if she was one of those brits. There was something about this girl she didn't mind, though. She was brave, clearly, not running off after Katherine clearly was snarking her. Or maybe she was just stupid. Bravery and Stupidity often went hand in hand, after all. lily luna potter

@katie Lily didn’t take heed when the girl, Katherine was her name, waved her hand around and kept walking. In Lily’s mind, that was a challenge to see what the person was all about, a way to poke them until they snapped. She didn’t mind being the annoying one. It was in her nature to not care and do what she wanted to, right? The summer had been a whirlwind of trying to get back to what was normal, and right now this seemed like the perfect moment to do that. This girl didn’t know her or what she was about, so putting up her gross, depressed front that had been so common lately was only going to make her walk in the opposite direction. That and this was going to give her time to kill, which up until a few minutes ago had been a problem for Lily.
Katherine returned the hand-shake, but only long enough to make it seem cordial, and then she was back into her walk, apparently heading towards the Shrieking Shack. Lily’s eyes lit up at the mention of the decrepit building. Of course she knew the way. “Do I know the way,” she laughed, waving her hand as if to say it wasn’t a problem. “I know the easiest way in as well. Assuming that’s where you want to go. Staring at it from the other side of the fence isn’t that fun,” Lily bobbed her head, knowing from experience that the house was way cooler inside than it ever would be on the outside. She could care less about the rumors – she knew the source of them. Merlin, she could be the new source of them if she really wanted to be. The school wouldn’t be all that happy about her transforming there, but it’d still be better than being locked into a room and forced to drink the potion. “Sooo are you going to the shack to look for ghosts, Katie? Can I call you that? Katie?”

Lily seemed to know the way, and to be proud of that fact. She said she even knew the 'easiest' way, which wasn't that important to Katherine. But then Lily specified, that she knew how to get inside the shack. Katherine wasn't generally the type to cultivate curiosity in situations such as this, but she was intrigued. Her eyebrow slowly raised as she considered the option, then Lily asked if she was looking for ghosts and - Katie, she said. Katherine tensed a little at that, but shrugged it off. "That's fine," she said. She didn't really mind people calling her that, but it did seem a little intimate for someone she was just meeting. "I suppose ghosts aren't so bad. Sure, show me the easiest way, as you call it. As long as the easiest way isn't death," Katherine said, sort of an attempt at the joke but her face stayed straight the entire time, so really it was up to her companion to decide if it seemed joke-like or not. lily luna potter

@katie Excellent! A nickname! Katherine didn’t really roll off the tongue all that well, and Lily was a huge proponent of shortening names as much as possible. If it wasn’t, then coming up with her own was just as easy. There were plenty students out there that she was sure were proud of the names she had given them. Katherine also sounded way too formal. That would be like, if her own name was Lilian, or Lilith, and everyone called her that instead of Lily. It would be silly. Plus, if they were going to be creeping around the shack, then they would need to keep their voices down, and Katie was easier to say in the end. A perfect plan and obviously one Lily devised on the spot without even realizing it.
“Nah ghosts aren’t bad at all. Hogwarts has a boat loads of pretty cool ones,” she explained, starting to count them off on her fingers but realizing she didn’t actually know how many there really were. “One has a head that almost falls off. Pretty awesome if you ask me.” Beginning the walk towards the shack, Lily picked up her pace so that they could get there quicker. Katie’s decision to follow, as long as it wasn’t to death, was good enough for her. If that decision ever changed, she had heard of a different way into the building, a back entrance you could call it, and the kind that she wouldn’t even risk unless absolutely necessary. Today was not one of those days though, and probably wouldn’t bring any crazy danger into their lives. Stopping outside of the fence that blocked the property and front yard of the Shrieking Shack, Lily threw her hands up in the air at it. “Well there ya go! She’s a little creaky and floor boards are always breaking, but it’s fun to explore all the same. Ready?”

Lily said ghosts weren't bad and that Hogwarts had boat loads of them. That wasn't surprising, ghosts tended to hang around places they were once happy when alive and a lot of kids really liked school, so why wouldn't the ghosts want to hang out there? Especially when there were other ghosts around. "I'm sure you have more than Ilvermorny did," did? Does? Where did the American ghosts go? Still, the U.K. was a much older country and there were definitely many more ghosts wandering around the ancient places here. Katherine raised an eyebrow in interest as Lily said one of the ghosts had a head that almost falls off. That was... odd. She didn't comment on it, though as they started to pick up their pace. Katherine followed til they stopped at a fence and Katherine stepped right up to it to get a better look. She was about to ask if Lily had ever been inside, but then then Lily asked if she was 'ready' and Katherine realized that she really did mean to take her inside. Katherine paused, looking at the shack for a moment longer before turning back to the sort-of-crazy redhead girl. "I suppose I am, since I have a guide and all," if the girl was actually a homicidal maniac then Katherine was sure she could handle her in a duel, so there really wasn't that much risk. Plus, she was bored, so why not? lily luna potter

@katie “Honestly, surprised we’ve only got one new one over the last couple of years. Plenty of dead kids these days,” Lily laughed awkwardly. What was wrong with her? That wasn’t funny at all. This was what happened when she spent the entirety of the summer thus far sulking around like a ghoul that had been forced out of its steam vent by the Ghoul Removal Squad. She was better than that. And much prettier. Katie would probably think she was an absolute psychopath. While that was true on some occasions (or most, depending on who was asked), Lily was trying to be a little more responsible. That word, responsibility, used to make her roll her eyes and then do the exact opposite of what was expected of her. These days she kind of understood that she needed to be slightly more mature and take responsibility for her actions. Didn’t have to be all the time, just the more important moments. Right now was not one of those ones.
A cheesy grin attached itself to Lily’s face as Katie agreed to go into the shack with her. “Perfect! Right this way then Miss Katie from America,” she exclaimed, doing a little bow and then hopping through a hole in the fence that was a few feet from where they had initially stopped. Proceeding up to the front door of the shack, she tried the handle, which was locked of course. Using spells was for losers, so Lily put her shoulder up against the door and gave it a hard shove. The lock snapped off and in she went, momentum taking her straight into a wall of cobwebs, a cloud of dust billowing around her as she stumbled onto the floor. “Looks like the maid is slacking again,” she coughed a few times as she tried to clear off the thick layer of dust that was on her hands. “Well come on Katie! The ghosts don’t have all day,” she called back to her new friend.

Lily said she was surprised they had only had one new ghost over the last couple of years, considering all the 'dead kids these days'. Katherine didn't laugh, not even uncomfortably. She just scrunched her brow a little and gave a short nod. "I think it's a good thing. It means nothing's holding them back," she suggested. She didn't like anything holding her back, so she could respect when the dead didn't want to stick around. Granted, she was pretty bitter about moving to a new place - from America to England - so maybe she wasn't much better than those ghosts that appeared with some sort of sap story about not being able to move on... Lily grinned as Katherine said she was ready to go in, and the smile was a little unsettling. Just because it was so... excited. Showing a lot of emotion to Katherine, someone the girl had just met... but, the confidence was note-worthy. Katherine followed as Lily bowed and moved through a whole in the fence. Katherine fit through easily, quite small herself. They made it to the creepy old building and Lily took the lock right off and led them in. Katherine hesitated, seeing the cobwebs that greeted the girl. She smirked as Lily joked about a maid. "Or she died somewhere in there," Katherine suggested. Lily called back to her, noticing that Katherine hadn't followed yet... so in she went. The place was extremely gloomy and dirty. It was almost hard to breath because of how stuffy it was. "They could at least open a window or something..." but every window she saw was boarded up. "Why doesn't someone re-purpose this place?"lily luna potter

@katie “Right-o!” Lily grinned, giving Katie a thumbs up. Dead kids were dead kids. She wasn’t wrong; it was good that they were able to move on even though they were being horribly murdered for political motivations. Lily laughed again because she didn’t know what else to do. Everything that came out of her mouth lately was dark, but this took the cake by far. Those were terrible things to say. But it didn’t stop her from continuing: “I’d probably haunt the heck out of the Gryffindor Common Room if I died at school. I almost did once. Or could have. But I was careful not to,” she explained vaguely. Adrian as a werewolf could have torn her to shreds if they hadn’t been prepared for everything. Luckily he showed more restraint than she knew even existed when wolfed out.
Katie cracked a joke about the maid possibly having died in the house, causing Lily to shrug. “Maybe. My dad told me a werewolf used to live in here. Or something like that. That’s how it got the name.” She was pretty sure she didn’t shriek when turned, though her howl was definitely more high-pitched than some of the other wolves she had the pleasure of listening to. Howls and yelps were more her kind of noise. “But that would defeat the purpose of it being haunted or whatever. Like I’ll totally buy it in a few years once I have the money and if they let me.” That would actually be awesome, now that she thought of it. Honeydukes would be super close, and she could bug the heck out of the Hogwarts students whenever she felt like it.
As she contemplated this, Lily meandered closer to the stairs, planting her hand on the dust covered banister as she skipped up the first few steps. “Figured we could start from the top and make our way down to the basement. Leave the best for last, ya know?” She had never actually been in the basement before, but it sounded like it would be a blast. There was no telling what could be down there.

'Right-o!' Lily exclaimed, giving a thumbs up. Katherine thought that was a bit of an odd reaction, but maybe Lily wasjust the type who liked to be eerily positive in order to avoid the real trauma of having lost those classmates. It wasn't the worst way to handle things, at least not with a stranger. Either way, Katherine was just glad this wasn't turning into a sob-fest or anything of the like. Lily went on, saying that she would 'haunt the crap' out of the Gryffindor Common room if she died at school, causing Katherine to raise an eyebrow at the rest of her comment. "Almost die in the attack last April?" was Katherines guess. If Katherine died she wouldn't bother sticking around as a ghost for any reason. Cept' maybe to haunt Jacob. Get into his head for once... Lily spoke of how her father said there was a werewolf who had lived there, and Katherine pursed her lips in thought. "I would think the wolf must have transformed here, then. Because I can only see 'shrieking' being applied to the human part of them you know?" she guessed. Wolves didn't really 'shriek'. Katherine wasn't sure if that was the best word to describe a human in pain either, but it 'Shrieking Shack' did sound cooler than 'yelling really loudly in pain' shack, or something. Lily said that re-purposing the Shack would 'defeat the purpose' of it being haunted, and Katherine shrugged. "You should do that, just keep the haunted thing going. Maybe throw an event every Halloween," she suggested when Lily said she could buy it in a few years if they'd let her. As Lily's hand touched the dusty banister, Katherine grimaced. She would not be touching that, even as she started to follow Lily up the stairs. "Basement?" Katherine repeated, her voices pitch a little bit higher for a moment. "Sure, that works." No use chickening out now. lily luna potter

@katie “Pfffffffft,” Lily let out. Katie was really hilarious. Then again, Lily had set her up to tell the werewolf story, so it wasn’t completely her fault for guessing the former. “Gosh no. I was all cozy in bed when that happened. This was like…” she flipped out her fingers to count how many years it had been since Adrian bit her. “Two or three years ago now?” She nodded her head, agreeing with herself on the assessment about how long ago the werewolf bite was, only then realizing that she never actually told Katie what had occurred to almost kill her. Laughing, Lily continued, “I got bit by a realllly big dog.” Her grin grew a couple times bigger than it already was, “So now I’m a werewolf. It’s pretty neat.”
Lily hopped up a few of the stairs, the floorboards threatening to give way under her. They had years of repeated abuse from students wandering in and little to no repairs being done on them. Eventually someone was going to go tumbling through them, and she hoped it wasn’t her. Coming to the shack often always raised that risk immensely. “I mean, sure. Maybe it was the person shrieking. I think it’s more likely that the locals were interested in finding out what the howling was, got scared once they saw it was a werewolf, and their screams are what got it the name.” Lily was fairly proud of her deduction skills, a content look going across her face as she finished talking. That was the only thing that made sense to her, since her kind really didn’t make the described noises or could even do so outside of the full moon.
“Oh I’d totally love to throw my Halloween parties in here, but I have a better place for it in the castle,” she teased. The Room of Requirement was loads better than the shack ever would be, and would bend to her every whim if she asked it politely enough. Coaxing the magical room on to make what she wanted was tough, but definitely feasible. Unlike cleaning the shack, which would definitely have to be done prior to hosting a party in it.
Climbing the last of the stairs, Lily popped her head into the master bedroom. The bed was in shambles: the four-poster part of it broken on the floor, the cloth from the canopy weathered and ridden with holes from moths. It had seen better days for sure. “This is our lovely master bedroom. As you can see, marble floors and an excellent view of Hogsmeade from the windows. Just needs a good mopping and you’ll be able to actually tell it’s a marble floor.” If it was a marble floor in the first place. Lily was starting to think it only looked like marble because years of dust had compacted into something else altogether. It still needed to be cleaned though.

Lily said she was all cozy in bed when the attacks happened and Katherine furrowed her brow. Lily went on to explain, saying that it was two or three years ago when she almost died. Katherine was ready to accept that as enough of an answer - but then Lily said she was bitten by a really big 'dog', and that she was a werewolf now. Lily's smile was unsettling, and... neat? She thought being a werewolf was neat? Was this shack some kind of popular place in English werewolf culture to bring unsuspecting victims to eat them? But it wasn't even a full moon, and Lily didn't look the type to eat someone while in human form. Katherine nodded slowly, "soo... you like it then? The werewolf thing?" she asked, her tone slightly cautious. Katherine followed up the stairs, still, not skipping a single step. In fact, sometimes she'd linger on one just to make sure it was safe before climbing onto the next. Lily spoke of it being the person shrieking, possibly, but added that it was probably the people who realized it was a werewolf. Katherine shook her head, "wouldn't there have been protective wards and things?" she suggested. "I mean, if this place was set up for a werewolf to hideout in on purpose," she added. Lily said she'd love to throw Halloween parties there but that she had a better place for that at the castle. "I look forward to see it," Katherine said. She liked Halloween, really, but wasn't a lover of it or anything. She didn't like sweets, for one thing. Lily looked into a room on the top floor and Katherine followed suite. She nodded slowly as Lily gave a tour guide like description. "Well... that's... lovely."lily luna potter
