Brandon was doing better, relatively. Of course, he was still going to stupid physical therapy twice a week, but at least he could play the piano now. The guitar was not as easy as he wanted and he was struggling with the fact that his fingers weren't doing what he wanted there, but at least he was starting one of his instruments again. Today he was practicing his piano. He was starting with scales and feeling pretty good about it until he heard someone ringing the doorbell. He stayed where he was for a minute, figuring that whoever it was had to be here for Karen or Kara, but then he remembered that his roommate left a short while ago. Sighing, Brandon stood and moved to the door, where he opened it and stared, not knowing what to say. rose harriet granger-weasley

Brandon,
I’m in America. I know. I should have told you. I’m sorry. It was all very sudden and I just needed to get away. I couldn’t stay in England. Everything was too much and I need to be a little selfish. Don’t try to reach me, I won’t get any of your letters, I’m not going to be in one place for long enough. I hope you’re well.
Love, Rosie
Rosie got back from America yesterday and felt like a visitor now walking the streets of London. It was strange not spending her days driving, and this was the longest period of time that she had spent without her small, blonde companion in the last month. But now, with her shorter hair and slightly more spontaneous nature, she walked up the the building which she knew Brandon lived in and found her way to his door. She had been there a few times before, before she left, of course. She had tried to be with him as much as possible, not wanting him to be alone and not wanting to be away from him.
She didn’t even know if he would be there. She hadn’t called first, or sent word via owl. She was just kind of hoping that he was. She knew that she hadn’t handeled any of this well. She just left. She sent him a letter in the muggle post from Washington DC early in July. She didn’t know if he got it. How could she? She told him not to answer her. She didn’t know what she would do if he did answer. But, that didn’t mean that her dreams were any less riddled with images of Brandon and Adonia. How they were friends was beyond her. But she had seen them together so often that she had made it to be this big thing in her head: whether or not it was, she honestly didn’t know.
Rosie knocked on the door and before too long, Brandon opened it and stood in the doorway and stared. She didn’t blame him. Her heart stopped a bit when she saw him. How could she have hurt him like that? How could she have just left him? She knew, vaguely, of his history and people leaving him in the past. How could she do the same thing? Sweet, little Rosie who would never do anything to hurt anyone. “Hi.” she said softly.

It was Rosie. Rosie was standing at his door, looking in at him with shorter hair and something different with her personality, but at the same time not. It was the same Rosie Williams as before, wasn't it? Brandon didn't know. He didn't know what to think. Actually, he couldn't really think at all. The moment he saw her standing there, he froze. What would she be doing? She left. Left without saying a word, sending a letter through muggle mail and telling him not to try and reach out to her. She left him, so why was she here? Why did she come back? She said "hi" and with that word Brandon unfroze. He felt his muscles tense as he tried to prepare himself for whatever was about to happen. Did she decide that dumping him over letter wasn't enough? He couldn't fathom what was going on. He nodded, unable to force himself to say anything, his throat was too constricted. Brandon took a step backward, gesturing with his hands that she could enter if she wanted. What was she doing here? He still couldn't say anything, so he waited nervously for whatever was about to come. rose harriet granger-weasley

He didn’t say anything, but seeing him, even just standing there still made a smile creep onto her lips. She had missed him so much, but she could see in his eyes that he was confused. When she had sent the letter, she didn’t mean it to seem like she was breaking up with him. She didn’t entirely know what she wanted to get out of the trip to America, but she felt like it had served its purpose in her life story. he gestured for her to come in and she did, letting him take his time closing the door behind her. “How are you?” she asked, knowing now that this was a bigger conversation. She had just left, she knew that. And she knew that it wasn’t the right way of handle the situation, but she felt so stressed and confused, and she also felt like she was being pushed out by Adonia and the only way she could think of to deal with those feelings was to get as far away from the situation as possible. And because she felt like that was the answer, she knew that she needed to do that. She needed the time to clear her head and understand what it was that she really wanted.

There was quite a big part of Brandon that was convinced he was making this up. That was the only logical explanation, right? Rosie was gone. She went to America, no word on when she would return and he'd assumed that she wouldn't come back to see him. Why would she, when she left? Still, he watched as she came in and his eyes drank in the sight of her. After a moment, he turned from her and closed the door, entirely unsure about what he was supposed to do now. Then she asked how he was. Brandon turned to look at her again and forced himself to smile. He was happy to see her, of course, but also confused. So many mixed feelings coursed through him. She looked so pretty, even though she cut her hair and now looked almost entirely different because of that. He coughed, trying to clear his throat so he could speak. "I'm ..." Crap. How was he? What the heck was he supposed to tell her?! "Alright," he answered after a momentary hesitation. "How are you?" Then he realized they were standing right inside the doorway, talking. Could he be more awkward. "Umm ... do you want to come in and sit down?" he asked, gesturing to a room with a couch. He didn't know why she was here, but he didn't want to be rude. rose harriet granger-weasley

Based on the way that he was acting, Rosie was very aware of that fact that she had hurt Brandon by leaving a lot more than she had meant to, and she let the wave of dread and pain take over her. She wanted to run to him. She wanted to wrap her arms around him and kiss him and make him know that it was all okay and that she was back and she was sorry and she’d never just leave him again. But she knew that just saying those words wouldn’t be enough to pay him back about just leaving, especially since he wasn’t even fully back to his original self. “I’m fine. I missed you. I’m glad to see you again.” she admitted shyly, wondering what thoughts were going though his mind right now as she stood there inside of his flat. He asked if she wanted to sit down and she nodded. “Uh yeah, I do.” she agreed. She walked into the living area and sat on the sofa, unzipping her leather jacket that she had bought in a muggle thrift shop as she sat. “Brandon I…” she didn’t even know how to start, or what to say, but sitting in the silence was too much. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.” she whispered. “I know that I did, but that wasn’t my intent at all…”

She came in, saying that she was fine and that she missed him. His heart leaped when she said that she was glad to see him again ... but she couldn't be glad in the way he wanted, could she? Or was she? Ugh, he just didn't know! Brandon felt so confused by everything to do with this situation, but what he did know was that he was still in love with the girl standing in front of him, he just didn't know what to do about it. The hint of a smile came on his face at her words. "You ... still want to see me?" he asked, his pulse racing as he waited for her to answer. She sat down and he moved so he was sitting on the other end of the sofa, looking over at her. He didn't know what to say to her. Rosie said that she never wanted to hurt him and Brandon's eyes widened in surprise. What did she think would happen when she left? That he would be happy? "What did you think ..." he paused. There was no point in asking that. "Why? Why did you go?" his voice cracked a little as he asked the question. He just couldn't stand not knowing. "What did I do wrong?"rose harriet granger-weasley

He was surprised that she still wanted to see him and hearing those words come out of his mouth made her heart sink. How could he think that she never wanted to see him again? After the last few months that they had spent together? After her being constantly by his side for the weeks when he was in the hospital and for the few weeks after before she left. She knew it was sudden and unexpected, but he had to know that she didn’t hate him. Didn’t he? “Of course I still want to see you.” she explained. He sat down and started to speak a few times before actually getting out a full sentence. Why did she go? What did he do wrong, Rosie let out a sigh, not even sure what to say because she hadn’t figured it out exactly herself yet. “You didn’t do anything… well… I don’t know… I…” she had thought that he did do something, she had got caught up in the idea that he and Adonia were growing closer and that there was no room for her anymore. But her travels hadn’t been just to separate herself before she was pushed out. She had no idea what she wanted to do with her life and she hoped that a new place would offer her the inspiration she needed. “I felt like I was in the way here.” she admitted, not looking at him. “Maybe I was making it up in my head.” she shook her head. “I was scared.” she said, simply.

She said of course she still wanted to see him ... like there was never any question of it, like she hadn't expected him to ask such a question. Did Brandon read the whole situation wrong when she left? He figured it was a subtle was for her to tell him she wasn't interested. She knew that he'd been abandoned before by those he cared about. Did her leaving not really mean anything about him? His mind filled with questions. He wanted to ask some of them, but at the same time he didn't. He didn't want to have to deal with whatever her questions might be. She started to explain that he didn't do anything and then said she didn't know. His eyes widened. What did he do? Did he chase her away somehow? He was about to ask when she continued, saying she felt like she was in the way and his eyebrows furrowed. "Rose," he said softly, reaching for her hand across the couch and attempting to touch it lightly. He didn't want to scare her off, but he needed to touch her. "What did I do wrong? You've never been in the way ... I don't understand." Brandon hated having to admit that, but he had to. He didn't understand what she was talking about. "Why were you scared?" His voice was soft now, pleading. He needed to know why she left, if it wasn't to try and get away from him. rose harriet granger-weasley

He said her name softly and reached to touch her hand. There was some hope in that, wasn’t there? At least it seemed like he hadn’t entirely written her off. He wanted to understand, he kept asking her what he did wrong and that question continued to shatter her heart. She didn’t know if he actually did anything wrong or if it had all just been in her head. When she left, there was almost no doubt in her mind that she was being pushed out and was in the way. Not that she had seen much actually happen between Brandon and Adonia, but she had let what little of their interactions that she had observed get to her and she allowed her mind to make up horror stories involving them. However, while on her trip, she began to realize that she had probably made it all bigger than it was. She should have trusted Brandon. “I was scared that you didn’t want me around. That there was something going on with you and Adonia…” she admitted, feeling kind of silly now for even thinking that way, totally oblivious to what happened with them after she left.

Well ... Rosie didn't pull away from him. That was a good sign, wasn't it? Brandon felt like he was grasping for straws, searching for some sign that really showed she wanted to be here with him. He still had a hard time believing that. It took her a while to answer his question and he squeezed her hand gently, trying to be encouraging. When she said she thought he didn't want her around, his mouth fell open. Why would she ... Adonia? That didn't make any sense. Nothing happened between him and Adonia until after he left. At the memory of that, his stomach twisted uncomfortably. He shook his head. "Rosie, I always want you around. Adonia is ... she's a good friend. She was one of the only people that understood what I went through with the accident, and I'll admit that being in the hospital with her made us closer friends, but I was dating you and that's what I wanted to do." What he still wanted, but he felt too nervous to tell her that. "Then you left and I ... broke again." He wasn't proud of it, but if things were ever going to happen between he and Rosie again, he needed to be honest. He took a deep breath and continued, not looking at Rosie's face anymore. "I broke and Adonia tried to help me pick up the pieces. She ... we kissed and I realized that I couldn't go to her for comfort about you leaving, because it just made me miss you more." Brandon bit his bottom lip. "Adonia is a dear friend, but I'm in love with you." He looked up, hoping Rosie believed him. rose harriet granger-weasley

Part of the reason that Rosie was feeling so badly and conflicted about thinking that something had happened between Brandon and Adonia was because she knew that she was being selfish in not wanting Brandon and Adonia to be friends. She knew that Adonia had done so much to just keep Brandon alive and Brandon likely wouldn’t have even survived without Adonia. But, as thankful as Rosie had to be, there was still a little part of her brain that couldn’t forget what she couldn’t entirely remember. Something had obviously happened that night back in March on the astronomy tower, something more than dueling practice. Rosie was sure she would never agree to practice dangerous magic with a student she didn’t know. She couldn’t figure out why she didn’t remember, but waking up in the hospital wing was no accident, she was almost positive. “And she would always be able to understand you in a way that I couldn’t because of all of that. I just got jealous I guess. I don’t know, I know now how childish that was.” Rosie had done a lot of thinking about how childish she was in general and how it was time to figure all of that out.
They kissed. He and Adonia had kissed. Rosie felt her vision blur as she listened to the words coming from Brandon’s mouth. But were they echoing? Was everything spinning? Rosie took her hand away, grasping instead to the couch, suddenly feeling a little light headed. “You kissed?” she repeated in a whisper. He insisted that Adonia was a good friend but he was in love with her, with Rosie. Rosie shook her head, “but you kissed her…” she said again, slowly.

Brandon nodded when Rosie said that Adonia could understand him in a special way. "She can understand me from the attack, Rosie, but not better than you. You know me. You've known me ever since we started going to school together and you mean the world to me," he felt an urgency to make sure she knew this, that he cared for her. "There's no reason for you to be jealous of anyone else. Ever." Brandon loved her. She pulled away from him at his confession, obviously surprised and horrified by what he said. Brandon wanted to reach forward again, but she didn't want him to touch her. He wasn't about to violate her wishes. He bit his lip and looked down at his hands when she asked about the kiss repeatedly. Was that all that mattered? Brandon sighed. "I did. I thought you were never coming back, that you left me just like everyone else I care about does. I went to a club to try and distract myself. Adonia was there and she kissed me and I kissed her." Brandon looked up to Rosie again, hoping to meet her eyes. "It was wrong. It didn't feel right to either of us and we decided to be friends, nothing more." He sighed, "I love you, not Adonia. I'm sorry for hurting you. I never wanted that."

He had a point. She had know him for so long, he had been one of her very best friends. She had known him as a child, when they first met, and now she knew him as an adult. They had grown together and they had grown much closer as they grew up. Honestly, Rosie had never thought back then that they would ever be together romantically. Brandon was always just a friend. He was a fun person to hang out with he was someone who was a Hufflepuff and was proud to be just like she was. But then he transfered and she was better able to understand how much he really meant to her. It had taken them a while to find their way back to one another, but when they did, the butterflies in her stomach were there from the moment she saw him step off that ship.
Rosie blinked her eyes a few times, thinking about all of that nearly felt like having a flashback to that time, when things were simpler and all she had to worry about was how giddy she felt when he held her hand. That seemed so long ago now but it was actually just months. “Why? What made you think that I would never come back? You know me, is that the kind of thing that I would do? Just take off without telling anyone?” she asked, surprised at how upset she was and how serious her voice had got. She had never heard herself speak that way and it scared her knowing that she was doing it. “Yes, I should have told you. I should have put more on my post card, but I was upset. Not that it was completely justified… but” she stood up, feeling herself compelled to be moving. Sitting down and staying still was clouding her brain and keeping her from thinking straight. “But even though my fears weren’t real at the time they still happened, didn’t they? As soon as I took myself out of the picture.” her heart was racing. She still felt dizzy. She never, never thought that she would be pacing back and forth in Brandon’s apartment yelling at him but here she was.
And then his words stopped her in her tracks. "I love you, not Adonia. I'm sorry for hurting you. I never wanted that." she turned to face him again, locking eyes with him. She felt her muscles soften as she blinked slowly, her eyes burning with tears that she had been refusing to let out. “You jerk.” she whispered, not meaning it at all. “How am I supposed to be mad at you when you say things like that?” she sighed, brushing her hair back with her fingers. She swallowed the lump in her throat. “You two only kissed the once?” she asked. “And it’s never going to happen again?”

She was angry at him. That wasn't hard to see and it made sense. It really did, but at the same time Brandon was surprised that she didn't know the answers to the questions she was asking. He turned so he was facing the television in front of the couch and leaned forward, putting his elbows on his knees. He would answer her questions, but he didn't have to look at her as he did so. He didn't want to see her reactions. "No one else comes back after they leave. At least, they don't come back wanting the same things as me." Both Callie and Callisto and even his father were evidence of that, though he was honestly the one who ran away from Callie. She didn't wait for him though. His breath caught in his throat at her next question. His tone was resigned, all the fight gone out of him. He responded to her leaving with mourning, assuming she wouldn't come back because that was what he knew. "You left without telling me, just like they did. What gave me any indication that your return would be any different?" He sighed when she talked about her fears happening when she left, but his words were a little sharper now. "That happened because I made a stupid decision, but if you hadn't left, or even if you came and talked to me before you left, it never would have happened. It only did because I was convinced I lost you," Brandon stopped, not wanting to say too much. Then their eyes connected. She was looking at him and he saw her ... relax? She called him a jerk, but Brandon ignored that, waiting for what came next. He stood as she asked how she was supposed to be mad at him and moved closer to pull her into his arms, but then she asked more questions. He looked at her carefully, lifting a hand to play with a lock of her hair and slowly tuck it behind her ear. "I kissed her once before, a while before you and I started dating." Then he shook his head, "It won't. She's going to America and even if she wasn't, she's only a friend." Brandon paused, reaching forward to touch Rosie's cheek gently. "I want you Rosie. I love you and I don't want to be with anyone else." His eyes searched hers as he waited to see if she would forgive him and let them move on. "I'm sorry," he whispered. rose harriet granger-weasley
