Apparition Class
Anya had always had an interest in magical transportation. It was just a fascinating aspect of everyday life. People needed to get to places quickly, and magical transportation really did offer them a chance to get where they needed to be in a blink of an eye. Without magical transportation, the wizarding world would not be itself. Apparating was a method of such transportation, but it was also the hardest to master. Although, it was also one that did not require as much stuff as other means of transportation did. All it took was the thought of the destination and the determination to get there, really, which was why it was essential that all wizards and witches knew about it. She would be teaching the sixth years apparating this term. Anya was having the class on the grounds, because the kids would need open, spacious surroundings for apparating. She waited for the sixth years to arrive as scheduled. Anya was going to be very gentle and supportive of the young ones. She was going to be friendly and encouraging to let them know that there was nothing to be stressed out for. They should go at their own pace and feel relaxed. She was naturally protective of kids like that. She would hate to see them feeling pressured and skittish. But, at the same time, she needed to be sure that what she was going to tell them verbally about apparating would be taken into deep consideration and careful thinking as they attempted it. It was very important for them to understand her message, because any little step done wrong could result in splinching, and she did not want that to happen. Therefore Anya would have to have a sense of firmness to her as well, and she thought it was the hardest part of teaching because she was naturally very docile and gentle. Scorp did his best not to whistle as he approached the instructor for Apparition on the grounds. He had not expected someone so young and beautiful, was that even allowed? He decided it was best to ignore the fact, knowing that it wouldn't be very mature to start hitting on the teacher but come on. He approached her and gave a short respectful bow, "Hello, guess I'm the first one here." He chuckled as he glanced around.
He actually expected Rose to get here before him. That little know-it-all always tried to beat him to the punch. They had basically been in a battle of wits since day one at Hogwarts at it was a never ending struggle. Still, he was sure he would master Apparation before she would. Why? He had no idea, but he was determined for that to be true. Where was she anyway? She was probably taking her sweet time, making sure that she was fasionably on time and ready to go with a big smile on her face. Maybe she'd even mock him for showing up early. He clenched his fists, suddenly furious with himself.

Andy had been looking forward to apparation for a long time! It was considered improper to leave a room in the middle of someone trying to talk to you buuuut.. apprating didn't count, did it? Andy decided it didn't. Which meant when she was in a situation she didn't want to be in she could just poof out of there and make up some excuse about how she accidentally disappears without any warning. She chuckled at the thought as she made her way to the grounds.
The only two people there was a lady she assumed was the instructor and Scorpius Malfoy. She walked up to them and stood beside Scorpius, folding her arms across her chest. The two had an awkward situation between them. Both of them had Death Eaters in their ancestry and both of them dealt with it a lot their first few years of school. This kind of caused them to band together for a while, but it didn't last past their third year when his cockiness started to take an even worse turn than their first two years. Granted, he had always thought he was smarter than everyone else, but other people started to notice too which just made things worse. Plus, the two had sort of a falling out as friends. She stood there, refusing to speak first.

Leonore really did want to learn how to apparate. It was a very important and convenient form of magical transportation that most adult witches and wizards knew, and naturally a youngster like Leonore wanted to learn it. But at the same time, she was simply dreading apparition class itself. Apparition was very hard and it was something that one would more likely than not fail the first time in--and failing when splinching, which was both dangerous and embarrassing. She was so afraid of standing in front of her fellow sixth years and making a laughable image of herself as her leg was on the ground and her hand in a tree. And suppose that she didn't splinch, but she stood rooted to her spot trying to apparate but ended up just standing there doing nothing or whatever humbling mishaps might happen to a newbie attempting to apparate for the first time. For some reason mistakes were common to people, but it seemed that the world was happy to turn upon her and judge only her for mistakes (in her mind, at least).
But she couldn't find any other way around attending the class. It was a necessary evil and she would just have to do it if she wanted to learn how to apparate through heartbreaking trial and error and receive good grades. Leonore was also not a rule-breaker and she didn't want to get into trouble with any staff for not attending a class. So the Ravenclaw ended up making her way to the grounds where the class was to take place, but she was ever so fidgety and terrified that she was that her face was lacking of color, and she was at a loss for words. She didn't have the energy to greet her pretty professor or her two schoolmates, so she gave the three of them a halfhearted nod before standing a little apart from them, looking as if she was going to have her head cut off on a chopping block soon.

Apparition. Philip was both excited and nervous about it. Excited, of course, because it was going to be a new experience for him. Apparating was the fastest and advanced way for a wizard or witch to transport themselves from one place and another, and he really wanted to know it. It would serve him good instead of having to use portkeys all of the time, or the bus. But he was also nervous because it was dangerous, too. However, even his father, who had been pretty clumsy and insecure in the past mastered it. Hell, Alice passed the class, too. He had no reason to think why he should do any less. Sure, Alice was a bit of a perfectionist, but generally it shouldn't be that bad. From what he heard it wasn't difficult to follow the instructions carefully. He just needed to be alert of what he was doing, calm, and unhurried. He was pretty sure he could do that. Still, though, it was something he had never done before and had yet to do, so he still feel some foreboding.
Walking across the lawns toward the group, he saw that the professor was a pretty blonde woman. He also saw that three of his classmates at arrived; Malfoy, Lestrange, an Wolfe. Phil liked Andromeda and Leonore, but he doubted he had much fondness for Scorpius. He was a pretty sneaky snake in Philip's opinion. Phil wasn't going to brand him as someone who could do no wrong, because it was obvious that cockiness was a flaw, so there was no jealousy about that there. But there was still jealousy about how confident and at ease Scorpius was with other people and his surroundings. It was like nothing could ever faze him, and Phil was someone susceptible with misgivings and conflicted thoughts. Obviously, he would envy anyone cocky. Well, typical Slytherins, they liked to dominant other people instead of the other way around. Phil didn't like that.
The Gryffindor, standing behind the group, nodded at the professor. "Good morning, Professor." Philip was going to stand next to Andromeda, being his housemate and all, but before that, Philip quickly stopped by Leonore's side before passing her. Smiling reassuringly at her, he said gently, "It'll be okay, Leonore. Don't stress too much over it." She looked like she was going to be summoned up for execution, which wasn't good if one was going to apparate. Again, composure and a level head was needed. He trusted the professor to not push her too quickly into doing something she was bound to mess up in out of panic, though, but he would try to make her feel less intimidated if he could. Perhaps he should stand by her when if it was her turn to apparate to give her a measure of comfort.
He patted the Ravenclaw girl on the shoulder before moved toward Andromeda's side, and thus stood beside her. Glancing at her from the corner of his eye, he liked the way she was looking quite stony as she stood beside Scorpius. It felt good to know that he wasn't the only one not peachy with the dude, not to mention that Andromeda was one girl who wasn't in love with the bloke. "Hey, Andy. Looking forward to apparation?" he murmured to her with a slight smile.

Andy just gave Leonore a short nod when she arrived, not really knowing the girl that well. Plus, Andy couldn't help having a problem with Ravenclaw house since her oh-so-perfect sister was placed there. No, it was just better if Andy avoided the house all-together. No room for misunderstandings.
She smiled as Phillip finally joined them, waiting for him to make the first move conversation wise. Soon, he stood beside her and engaged her in conversation. "Oh, you know me. I love losing limbs!" She chuckled. Apparation really was dangerous and it probably wasn't a good thing to joke about, but she didn't care. This was her year to loosen up and she was going to do it.
She turned to look at Phillip, "notice how Malfoy is practically flirting with the teacher? What a suck up," she rolled her eyes at the Slytherin. She did feel a little bad though, because they were once friends.

Philip chuckled, somewhat nervously, at her joke about losing limbs. He liked to banter with his friends, but at the same time the idea of splinching was still raw on his mind. This was going to be his first time attempting to apparate, and he wasn't sure how well he would perform the task even if he was assured that he would most likely succeed. He wasn't hasty and was cautious, which was a good start, as those who knew him told him. But Phil really wished he could make time skip so that he would be an old man who knew how to apparate well, having already went through the moment when he first learned how to a long time ago. Sadly, he was going to have to live through that moment right now.
"Try not to lose your arms, though. You need them for playing the violin," he said. "I'd hate it if you couldn't. You're the best when it comes to the violin." Philip thought that Andy's talent for the violin was amazing. He always had a respect for musical talent, even if he definitely did not have it. "But I'm sure the medics would patch it up in no time if that happened...gosh, I have to admit that this is getting on my nerves..." He scratched the back of his head and bit his lower lip. It probably wasn't a sin to confess that he had misgivings about apparition, because everyone knew how risky it could be. This was going to be a rite of passage that he really did not want to have to face again--and he hadn't even started it yet! He heaved a sigh. "But we Gryffindors are probably expected to put up a brave front about it, aren't we?"
He smirked when she commented on how Scorpius was pretty much flirting with the professor. Shooting a side-long glance at the Slytherin, Philip had seen the way he was looking at her. The Slytherin did, of course, have the common sense to not be blatant about it, but he had seemed rather smitten as well. Philip had to agree that the lady was a looker, but he was one of those guys who had a more gentlemanly approach to his view of good-looking females, not to mention one who was older than him. Actually, Scorp really hadn't been doing at all and the look he had been giving her was probably more out of surprise to see that she was a good-looking lady instead of a plain adult, and no one could really fault him for that. It was a normal reaction. But Philip was eager to take up the jab at someone who he was rather jealous of. "Creeper. She should give him a smack in the face," he murmured.

It seemed that Andy had forgotten that she was standing right beside Scorp when she made that snobby comment. Scorp chose not to comment on that, however, for she really wasn't worth his time. The girl was a brat, and he learned that the hard way. They had been friends for so many years but she was the one who ended their friendship all on assumptions, just like she was doing now. Scorp really wasn't one to flirt with a teacher, he felt as if he was showing the teacher respect and kindness, which is what you should always do with your elders and those who are leading you. Andy, of course, had to stir up things about him that she really knew nothing about.
A part of him wanted to grumbled his own insults for her, but he decided against it. He was smarter than to play her game. Plus, that Philip kid wasn't one of Scorps favorite people either and if a battle of insults started, it'd be two against one. Who knew what Leonore thought of the group, she was too quite standing over their not speaking to really make an impact.

She was still standing a bit apart from the students, being as quiet and spiritless as ever. Just one look at her face, which was devoid of color, was enough to know that she was feeling edgy and nervous. Full of misgivings, she was. Leonore was pretty sure that by the time this lesson was done she was going to be a bloody mess. She even wondered if she would survive this at all.
The girl almost jumped when Philip appeared by her side, but she relaxed somewhat, knowing that he was a good friend. He was one of those people, like Ronan, who were patient and kind to her. She gave him a weak smile when he assured her that it was going to be okay. That actually helped to calm her somewhat. It helped to know that she wasn't going to be alone in this. If Philip was calm about it, then perhaps she should follow his lead and look up to him for guidance, despite her being than him in classes, what with her being a Ravenclaw and all. It was just easy to feel that sort of attachment toward someone who you felt almost as if you could only depend on them.
He went over to stand by the other students--Andy, to be exact. They seemed to be talking normally until Andy made the rather mean comment about Scorpius. Leonore actually heard it from where she was standing, as she wasn't standing too far away. Philip seemed to agree with her, what with the smug way he was looking at Scorpius. The Slytherin, though, pretended to pay no heed.
Her eyes widened, and she frowned. She wondered where the Gryffindors got the assumption that the Slytherin had been flirting with the professor. From what she saw Scorpius hadn't really been doing anything, and she thought it was rather uncalled for and rude for them to say false things about him like that. It was easier for her to think that, for Scorpius had so far been rather nice to her. Maybe there was bad blood between the Gryffindors and the Slytherin, but Leonore just didn't know. Either way, she still thought that Scorpius didn't deserve that jab. She wanted to let him somehow know that she was on his side, but she wasn't sure how she could in this situation. After all, she was still too worked up over her own fears about apparition...plus, she didn't want to upset either Andy or Philip and cause a row.
She resorted to giving him a faint, fleeting smile that showed understanding--and, involuntarily, some sympathy, if he even bothered to look her way.

Philip was clearly a little nervous about the fact that losing limbs was a real thing. She smiled at him reassuringly and patted his arm comfortingly. He was going to be okay, of course. Phil could figure this out. When Phil turned the conversation into complimenting her playing, Andy blushed and looked away for a moment. He was the only person she let see her play without sheet music in her Room of Requirement space. He was the only person who knew how to get in out of the room as well. Though, she didn't invite him there as often as she went. She, of course, needed to be alone at times and didn't want him seeing her at her worst. "Phil, you're making me blush," she said honestly as she turned back to face him.
"You're right. The medics will make sure nothing bad happens to a bunch of students. I'm sure we'll start out small, anyway." she was almost encouraging herself more than he at this point. At his next couple comments Andy laughed, "Hey, nothing wrong with being nervous. Even if we are Gryffindors. But you're right, I think. We are expected to be brave," she linked her arm through his and placed her other hand on her hip. "I promise to be brave if you will. Deal?" she glanced up at him with a sideways look. Normally Andy wasn't a really touchy person, and she wouldn't have been caught dead linking arms with her fathers enemies sons or daughters. But she had developed a friendship with Philip, one that meant a lot to her even if she didn't know it. They had spent many hours together alone in the Room of Requirement, showing each other their secrets and sharing hobbies. They really had a deeper friendship than Andy realized, even now.
Andy chuckled again as Phil suggested Scorp get a smack in the face. She agreed, but not for the reasons that she was pretending for. She shrugged, "Eh, let him have his fun," she said venomously.

Gah apparition--
--there wasn't a lot that made Will outright nervous class wise. Working with magical creatures that could hurt him if he wasn't careful? He was okay with that. Working with plants that could strangle him if he was dumb about it? That was okay too. But apparition--erugh it was right up there among flying in things that made him feel so nervous that he thought he was going to loose his lunch over it. Apparition was dangerous okay? He had heard tales of people splinching themselves and that was enough to almost make him not want to take the class anyways. But alas there was no getting out of this class. Flying? Perhaps...but apparition? He wasn't so lucky.
He walked on. He wasn't walking along at break neck speed but he wasn't being slow as molasses either. Someone stopped him for a moment and asked him if he was okay and he nodded. Oh yeah he was fine. Perfectly fine. Nervous as heck but fine. The other didn't seem to believe it but they didn't question it and left him to his own devices.
He made his way towards the grounds though--as nervous as he was though he was still determined to get this right. He had to have at least one way to get himself out of any pickles if he wasn't going to be flying around on any brooms. He saw a small group of people and assumed that this was the class as he saw the teacher. Not feeling like talking much--he stuck to the outskirts of the group--staying to himself. The look of nerves was probably as clear on his face as the Hufflepuff waited for the teacher to start class. The banter between the two Gryffindors and the Slytherin student was none of his business...nor was the Ravenclaw who always keopt to herself in classes anyways.
All he was focused on was calming himself. It was all going to be okay. Deep breaths. In the nose and out the mouth. All would be well.
He kept telling himself this...

The art of apparition was one that Lysander had studied a quite a bit of in his own time. For whatever reason, the young wizard's own parents often neglected apparition as a form of transportation in favor of taking to the skies on broomsticks or using questionably legal portkeys. In honest consideration, it was probably the same reason Luna and Rolf avoided use of the Floo Network so long as they could afford to: something, something, government surveillance, big brother, no privacy. It made some degree of sense, at least, seeing as the two skeptical wizarding naturalists were frequent intercontinental travelers for their work and couldn't entirely rely on apparition to take them between the world so easily. Perhaps it was a combination of the unknown and intrigue, or simply the idea of the mentality and technique behind its use, but this magic-raised youth was tickled by the idea of at-will teleportation.
Still, even with his developed resilience and supposedly iron-clad will, Lysander found himself almost compulsively mentally repeating to himself the Virgilian mantra of mens agitat molem, the mind moves the mass, mind over matter, for the entirety of the morning before class. As much as he'd love to be one tool in class who always picked things up immediately and had no issue at all with coming to class with the lesson already memorized, as he always had been, something at the back of his head nagged at the potential side-effects and risks involved with a botched Apparition. The night before, Lysander made a point of bringing along a vial of essence of dittany in his bottomless leather satchel- just in case.
Marching onto the empty field by himself in a freshly pressed school uniform, the older Scamander twin's arms were comfortably knit about his chest, his newly-shaved face telling little of the mental acrobatics his brain had been putting on trying to recite the Three D's. Having a near-encyclopedic memory of various spells he'd collected along the way of six years at Hogwarts was one thing- never had he ever attempted to literally to rip his own body through the fabric of space and time by himself, after all. He stood near the back of the pack of eager and queasy sixth-years with his mind mostly concentrated with himself. At the very least, he took cautions to only have a light breakfast that morning. Throwing up was not an option, unfortunately.

Being the ever so studious student that Berengaria was, she was, in her own quiet way, excited for apparition. She was confident that she would get it right, because unlike those stupid, insecure dimwits who surrounded her in this school, she was competent, calm, and collected. Cowering about it would just increase their chances of getting splinched. From what she heard, in order to apparate correctly, the person had to be level-headed and confident in order for them not to be hasty, and that was what she meant to do. Having misgivings about it was not going to help at all, especially when getting past these apparition lessons was inevitable.
And so Berengaria joined the rest of her classmates on the grounds with such snobbish thoughts in mind. She wasn't fond of the idea of standing too close to her classmates, as she generally wasn't a social person. But she was already used to entering a classroom full of other kids, and so this wouldn't be any different. Upon arriving where the group was, she saw that the Gryffindors were prattling, although she didn't care to know what they were talking about. There was also two other boys, a Hufflepuff and a Ravenclaw, and that Ravenclaw girl named Leonore who Berengaria had no small measure of contempt for. Eying the nervous girl from the corner of her eye, Berengaria couldn't help but sport a rather maliciously snooty look upon her face. She had also cast the same look at the Hufflepuff boy, too, because he didn't look any better than Leonore.
However, aside from looking nervous, Wolfe was also smiling at Scorpius. Berengaria removed her faze from the Ravenclaw to look at her housemate. She didn't know what on earth the girl was smiling at him for, but she wouldn't put it past the silly girl to be smiling at the boy of infatuation. Whatever the reason, Beren didn't care. She just knew that Scorpius had already made his presence. Scorpius, who she had known since childhood, because somehow her mother wanted her to be close to him, claiming that he was of decent stock and such. Unfortunately, Berengaria didn't have the same idea in mind. She loved her mother, but he also figured that her mother was a dramatically embarrassing person, so whatever acquaintances that she emphasized upon were bound to be weird. There wasn't really anything weird about Scorpius, but it was just her mother's insistence and pestering that made her uncomfortable around him. He was smart, but unbearably cocky, too. Not to mention, she resented him for being on the team when she couldn't.
She didn't see Albus around, but she wasn't looking forward to seeing him at all. Berengaria narrowed her eyes at Scorpius before turning away to stand apart from the group, but just enough to still be in the range. She stood with a straight back and proper posture, crossing her arms as she waited for the class to begin or for other students to arrive or whatever.

If there was anything that Anya knew about teenagers, she knew that they could be a wayward and difficult lot. They had all kinds of quirky and unique personalities, some that clashed more than others. Some were proper and obedient, but a lot of them could also be very plainspoken and blunt about expressing their feelings, even at the expense of others. In fact, they were less inclined to be civil and professional like adults and probably got a kick out of bugging their peers and settling scores their way. Anya had been a very gentle and sweet as a teenager, but she'd known many others of her time who had been rebellious and snarky and more susceptible to get into petty arguments and fights.
Now she saw that happen between two Gryffindors and a Slytherin boy. The blonde Slytherin had been the first to appear, and he had been polite to her. Anya thought he was a pleasant lad, and she had smiled at him and given him a nod of her head. "Good morning," she said. She probably was going to wait until everyone had arrived for her to introduce herself officially, though.
And then the two Gryffindors came along, a brunette girl and another blonde young man. The girl made a jab toward the boy, and she had said it rather loudly. Anya frowned, watching as they were making fun of the boy between themselves. She glanced at the boy to see if he was offended, and apparently he did seem a bit on edge, but he was doing a good job at controlling himself. She silently commended him for that. Slytherins might've had reputations for being mean, but they were definitely good at mastering their impulses. She wasn't sure if she should do anything about it. No, she doubted that she needed to. No squabble was happening, even if it almost happened. And Anya was sorry to admit that she was reticent about mediating between a fight. She wasn't the strict sort, and teenagers could be very stubborn.
Her attention was thus drawn to a Ravenclaw girl, who was standing a little apart from the group and looking ever so nervous. Anya sympathized for the girl, although she was somewhat taken aback by how anxious she looked. This didn't bode well, really, but again, Anya would be patient and do what she could to help the girl gain confidence. The same went with that Hufflepuff boy who looked nervous as well. He didn't look as scared as the girl, but still, she could see the signs of nervousness on him. Hell, she reckoned that more than half of the class would feel some foreboding, and Anya was determined to help them get by.
At last a Slytherin girl and a Ravenclaw boy appeared. Aside from the students who were mentioned in this post, there were a few others as well (or some of them may be late, as they chose). Okay, probably time to get started! Anya cleared her throat and straightened up, smiling at all of them. "Good morning, everyone. I am Anastasia Brodie from the Ministry, but feel free to call me Miss Brodie or Anya, however you please." It probably wasn't proper of her to allow them to call her by her nickname, but Anya didn't see why not. She wasn't officially part of the staff here, after all. "As you should know already, I'm here to instruct you all in this twelve-week apparition class. I'm going to be teaching you how to apparate, and my objective is to help you successfully pass this class so you may obtain your license." She paused for a moment, not exactly enjoying what she was about to say. But, it was necessary, because they had to know what they were expecting. "However, there is a possibility that some of you may fail this class as well. But that is a very normal circumstance; many people have a hard time learning how to apparate completely on the first take. In that case they would retake the class, and usually they end up succeeding sooner or later.
"While apparating is a very convenient means of transportation, it is highly difficult to master as well. Therefore, don't be disappointed if you find yourselves only getting the hang of it later on in the class. For now, the most that anyone can do at this stage is to understand what is commonly known as the Three D's.
"Appariting isn't only about thinking of your destination in your mind and thus arriving at the destination or disappearing from one place but appearing instantly at another--that's the context of it, yes, but there's more than meets the eye. In order for you to do it successfully, you have to remember The Three D's, which are the foundations of apparating. Keeping them in mind will ensure that you will not splinch.
"The Three D's are destination, determination, and and deliberation. Of course, you have to have a set destination in your mind, a destination where you plan to go to from where you currently are. But you also have to be determined to get there. You have to actually want to get to that destination for real, to seriously focus on getting there. You'll have your own reasons for wanting to arrive at that destination, but you have to be sincere in wanting to get there. It will do you no good just to fool around with apparating.
"Once you have a destination and mind and are determined to get there, you'll need to move with deliberation. You must be patient and allow yourself time to apparate. If you move with haste and do it too quickly, then you may very well splinch." She stopped there so that they could reflect upon the information that she had given them. She was most likely going to explain what splinching was when she spoke again. They probably knew what splinching was, but as the instructor, it was her responsibility to leave nothing out of the lesson because chances were some of them didn't know what splinching was, too. She was in a disposition in which she had to assume that they were like a blank canvas when it came to apparition education, in which she was the educator, of course.
