CONFUSED AND WARY, TIA'S MIND RAN IN CIRCLES as she processed what Liam was telling her. On the one hand, she felt sorry for her friend. To love someone for so long and do nothing about it, she had no real life experience, but it didn't sound great. On the other, she was concerned. Because, if he had loved Tamara for as long as he said he had, how had she not known? Did Tam know?
"I... don't think Tam knows...?" Tia blurted, half a question and a statement. Though the twins weren't actively confiding in each other, Tia still listened. Tam barely mentioned Liam at all, except in relation to or with Ethan. And that alone was a concern, because a second thought suddenly occurred to Tia.
"Are you going to tell her?" She asked urgently, because despite the fact that Tia and Tam were at odds, Tia hated the idea of her sister having to choose between two friends. She knew how Tam would agonise over it. Even if the one she was rejecting would be Liam, which in Tia's mind, was the obvious answer. And suddenly she remembered why she minded her own business most of the time. Peoples business was always so messy.

Tia didn't say anything right away, but Liam wasn't entirely surprised. She was probably trying to register everything he told her. After all, the fact that he was in love with her sister was a pretty big thing. She obviously hadn't expected it either. When Tia said that she didn't think Tam knew, Liam chuckled softly, shaking his head as he looked down to the ground. "I doubt it. I've never done anything to show her my feelings. Besides that, I've hardly ever talked to her. I normally just stammer around her ..." If it was anyone else, he wouldn't have said anything about this, but it was Tia. He could talk to her about most things, hopefully she wouldn't mind him talking to her about it.
His eyes widened and Liam shook his head, "No," his voice was a little panicked, though he hoped she wouldn't tell. She would. This was Tia, after all. "I can't do that to her ... or Ethan. I wouldn't do anything to hurt him, he's like my brother." He bit his lip, hoping Tia wouldn't judge him for this, though how could she not?

THE SHOCK OF IT ALL HAD CERTAINLY THROWN Tia. But, the more they spoke about it the more it settled in her gut. And the more she came to terms with the fact that the closest thing she had to a 'best friend' loved her identical twin. It was weird when she thought about it like that, but not so weird that she wanted to cringe away. Or, worse yet, ignore it.
She couldn't bring herself to comment on the fact that he couldn't even face Tam. Which was odd because Tia was usually considered the unfriendly one. It was funny how love worked like that. Sp, instead she fiddled with her robes sleeve and averted her gaze. Afraid to tell him she thought it was kinda sad, in case it hurt his feelings.
And when she sighed in relief, Tia tried to pretend it wasn't because he wasn't going to tell. "So... what are you going to do about it?" Tia asked tentatively, watching him from across the table. "Nothing?" Because, even though Tia was academically driven, she couldn't imagine not going for exactly what she wanted. And that just so happened to translate toward Liam's inability to act on his feelings. She was feeling very conflicted.

The air around them seemed to grow slightly warmer after he'd amitted that he wasn't going to tell Tamara or Ethan about his feelings. The thing was, it was a relief to have someone to actually talk about it. Despite the fact that he couldn't tell what Tia thought. She was just so good at holding in his emotions and only letting people see what she wanted them to see. Looking at her now, she just seemed serious. Wanting to understand, sure, and perhaps a bit concerned for him, but still serious. Her normal state, which was fine with him, except ... he wanted to know what she was thinking.
At her next question, Liam opened his mouth, but he had nothing to say. Not really, anyway. What could he do if he wasn't going to tell them? His mouth snapped shut and he looked down at the table as she softly asked if he was going to do nothing. He shrugged. "I can't do anything while they're together." If only they'd break up, but at the same time they seemed so happy together. "Maybe if they were to break up I could tell Tamara, but I'm not sure that'll ever happen, you know? So I guess I'll just wait, see if anyone else catches my fancy." Ha. There was no one for him other than Tamara. He'd loved her for years and that wasn't going to change any time soon.

THOUGH THE LAST THING TIA WANTED WAS FOR her friend to be in pain. Heartache sounded awful. She saw the merits in his reluctance to tell. Tam would be put in a horrible situation, and as far as Tia was concerned, Liam would be rejected. And in the process he might lose two friends. She saw it all playing out in her head, and it didn't play out well no matter how she framed it.
"Smart." Tia said pragmatically, sitting up straight. Tia lay her hands one over the other and her shoulder shrugged, lips pinches. "I mean, statistically speaking, we rarely stay to together with our first love." Tia said, in what was supposed to be a pit of reassurance. "Tamara and Ethan are more likely to break up than not." She flicked a lock of hair out of her face, a small snort escaping from her nose. "It's not like they're soulmates or anything." Which was perhaps an insensitive comment to make, but Tia had always been the type to dwell on facts than fates.
Gnawing on her lip, Tia said back and nodded once. "Yeah, maybe you should try that." She told him, narrowing her eyes slightly. "Date somebody else," She offered, though that wouldn't be her first thought, it didn't seem bad when the cards were laid out on the table. "I can help if you want?" That problem solving side of her peeking through. "Though... I don't know that many people..."

Liam nodded smartly when his friend said his plan was smart. As far as validation went, he trusted Tia’s opinion. At least she didn’t think he was being an idiot, letting the girl he loved date his best friend. That had to count for something, right? Besides that, her calling him smart was a big compliment, which was something Tia didn’t normally give. “Yeah, I know. I just didn’t realize that he liked her like that. So them dating kind of took me by surprise.” It shouldn’t have. Liam should have realized something was changing when Ethan started inviting Tamara to join their friend group and do things with them. He should have noticed his best friend talking about her more often, but he hadn’t. Them announcing their relationship was like a slap in the face. “I know. I just have to be patient and sometimes that’s harder than others.
Liam couldn’t help but smile when Tia started to give other suggestions. “I could try that. I guess I should start paying attention to other girls then, see if there are any of them that I could see myself dating.” It was a strange idea to him, something that Liam didn’t really like thinking about, but probably was a good idea. “I … yeah, I’d like your help. I don’t know so many people either,” he answered, offering her a small smile. “You sure you don’t mind?”

TIA'S BROWS PULLED TOGETHER IN THOUGHT. A small crease forming between them as she seemed to consider her words carefully. "Patience sucks," Tia agreed, drumming her fingers on the tabletop absently. She hated waiting for anything. Exam results, spell books and orders. It all sucked. And Liam was sitting their contemplating waiting for a whole girl? Not to mention, her sister. It boggled Tia's mind a little.
Again, as Tia thought hard about prospective girls for her friend, she began to take the idea very seriously. When a thought occurred to her, after a very tense moment of silence, she slapped one hand against the table triumphantly. "We'll go to Hogsmeade!" She declared, eyes wide as she looked at her friend. "Loads of students go there on the weekend," She shrugged her shoulders like it was obvious. "I'll help you pick a cute one to ask out." She said this in a way only Tia could manage, analytically, like she was simply solving a puzzle and not Liam's broken heart.

There was really nothing Liam could say when Tia agreed with him, so he merely shook his head, turning his gaze back to the window. It was still storming outside, rain pinging lightly on the glass. He liked storms, but it wasn't the distraction he hoped it would be. Maybe it would have been if Tia hadn't followed him, but she had. Now he didn't have any option but to think about how her sister and his best friend were wandering the school together, doing who-knew what. Liam didn't want to know.
The silence hung between them, but Liam didn't mind. With Tia he didn't feel like he had to talk, so after a minute, he bent over and placed his elbows on his knees, resting his head in his hands and trying to relax. He jumped when she hit the table, turning to look at her with his eyes quirked. "Hogsmeade?" he echoed gruffly, waiting for her to explain herself. It took a little longer than he expected, but his mouth fell open when she finally got it all out. "You want to help me find a girl in Hogsmeade?" The idea wasn't half-bad, actually, except for the fact that Liam was positive it wouldn't work. He saw plenty of girls during the day at school and none of them piqued his interest like Tamara did. "Do you really think that will work?" His voice soft as he contemplated the idea, not dismissing it immediately. Maybe it was worth a go ...

TIA LOVED EXPERIMENTS. SOME OF HER MOST favoured classes involved hands-on tasks. After all, the first time Liam had even met her she'd been doing just that. It just so happened, that while Tia was most comfortable around a cauldron, she wasn't opposed to social experiments, too. "I want to help you find a girl at Hogsmeade." Tia repeated, her face gravely serious. She didn't smile triumphantly, because this was a severe matter. Her friend was hurting, and he needed a distraction. This was finally something she could help with. "I think with every experiment there's a risk of failure." She said honestly, shrugging her shoulders. "But, that doesn't mean we shouldn't try." She was quite settled in her idea, plans already circulating in her head.
"We'll go this Saturday." She said, with finality. Pushing back her chair, she rounded the table and gently pushed his shoulder. "Now stop being moody and walk with me back to the common room." Tia said, staring at Liam expectantly. "We can draw up a rough draft." She was already turning away, believing fully that he would follow. "I just got a new quill, as well!" She said happily, thinking of the fine, black raven feathered quill waiting up in her room.

Tia was definitely more interested in this idea than Liam. It wasn't that he didn't want to find another girl to like, he just wasn't quite sure it was that easy. He'd had feelings for Tamara for years, so how was he supposed to find someone in one afternoon to help take those feelings away? It didn't quite seem logical, but he didn't want to argue with Tia. He could tell that she was entirely serious about her idea and he knew her. She wasn't going to drop this, so the easiest thing to do would be to agree. He nodded slowly as she continued, saying that there was always a risk of failure, but that they should still try. "Okay, I'm in," Liam answered decisively. He still wasn't entirely sure it would work, but why not give it a chance? Decision made, Tia stood and told him to come back to the common room. Liam sighed, but stood as she pushed his shoulder. "Alright, alright, I'm coming," he said, nudging her slightly in return. His eyebrows furrowed as she mentioned a rough draft. A rough draft for what? He'd figure out in a few minutes, so there wasn't really any need to ask. It probably had something to do with their plans at Hogsmeade for the weekend. Liam laughed as she mentioned her new quill. "Okay, let's go," he agreed, leading her back to the common room, feeling much better than he had a while ago. @tia --- the end ---
