With everything else that had to be done before her sons left for their final year at Hogwarts, there was one thing that hadn’t made its way onto the Hogwarts Express with the rest of Sav’s belongings: the new Starsweeper XXXI racing broom that she had for him bought over the summer, with a little bit of assistance in choosing the right model from Winnie Meagle. Rather than hurriedly giving Sav the broom in the back-to-school rush, Parvati had decided to keep it with her until after the feast, when she would be able to call Sav to her office. (Being his mother, as well as his Head of House, wasn’t without its perks.)
Assuring him that he wasn’t in any trouble on his first night back at Hogwarts, Parvati tried to remain perfectly casual. “You forgot to bring something with you,” she told him. Whether that was something that she or Ernie had found he’d left behind, she didn’t elaborate, nor was there any sign of what she was talking about once they had entered the office itself.
“Wait here,” she instructed Sav. Parvati knew that she very well could have summoned the broomstick over to them, but that would ruin the surprise. “You might want to close your eyes.”

Savtaj made his way to his mother's office as he did on occasion. He wasn’t one to seek out his mom, most of the time. In fact, he spent a good portion of his time avoiding her. Not actively. He didn’t go out of his way to avoid running into her or anything, however, since most kids didn’t have to deal with their parents while at school, Sav tried not to either. However, sometimes it was nice to have her so close by. He got word from her to come to his office and he made his way there, wondering what was happening. He hadn’t done anything yet, the term had literally just started. Maybe she had news for him, good news, he hoped. He didn’t want to find out that he had another set of siblings somewhere.
She assumed him that he wasn’t in any trouble and then said he had forgot something at home. While unpacking (a very generous use of the word “unpacking” as Sav’s version of unpacking meant hanging up a poster and throwing his quilt onto his bed) Sav couldn’t think of anything which he had forgotten. But, Mother knows best, “What is it?” he asked casually, expecting her to have brought it for him, as she had done before. Sav was instructed to wait and close his eyes, he had left something that he couldn’t see? He began to wonder if his mother was trying to pull something over on him, so he smirked while he closed his eyes and crossed his arms over his chest. Literally not one part of him expecting the gift she had got him.

“What is it?”
Sav’s question wasn’t unexpected, though Parvati couldn’t tell if the smirk he gave upon closing his eyes was because he already knew what was coming or because he thought he was too old to be closing his eyes for any sort of surprise.
Regardless, assured that he would keep his eyes shut, Parvati ducked back into her living quarters and got the broomstick. She had had it wrapped in brown paper in order to keep from giving away exactly what it was, though the shape of it wasn’t something that could be too easily mistaken for anything else. “I thought you might need this,” she prefaced, walking back over to Sav with the broomstick in hand.
If he didn’t love it, Parvati wasn’t sure what her plan of action would be. She wasn’t sure if she could return the broom. It was better than the one he’d been using, though, so she tried not to let any thought of Sav’s possibly disliking it enter her mind.
“You can open your eyes now, love,” she instructed, waiting to see Sav’s initial reaction.

Sav had smirked because he felt like he was too old for having to close his eyes to receive something that he had left at home over the summer. It wasn’t like it was something that he hadn’t seen before so why was his mother stressing over it so much and making it into this whole big thing? Sav could hear her footsteps disappear into her living areas and then back into the office. She walked over to her son and then told him that he was allowed to open his eyes finally. Savtaj opened his eyes, slowly at first, just a peak, but then fully. She was holding an oddly shaped package, a package that looked very similarly like a broomstick. Sav had remembered his broom, he was sure he had. That was likely the first thing he had brought. “What’s this?” he asked her.

“What’s this?” The object of a vaguely broomstick-like size and shape wasn’t enough of an indication for Sav, Parvati guessed, because he had brought his broomstick—his old broomstick now—with him. He wouldn’t have left home without it.
“Well,” Parvati led into the reveal, “you won’t know if you don’t open it.” Surely he had guessed it. “As your Head of House, I might not be allowed to show any favoritism,” she told Sav innocently, “but, as your mother…”
She held the still-wrapped broomstick out to Sav. “Go on,” she smiled.

Of course Sav could make out what the object was by looking at it, his questioning would have been better explained by asking “why?” which he still would do. Sav took the package and opened it, revealing a new model of broom which he had been eyeing over the summer when he stopped into the shop with Hugo. How his mom knew this was the one he wanted, he didn’t know. Maybe he had told her about it as part of a general conversation and had forgotten. Yep. That sounded like something that he would do. “Wow - I mean you didn’t have to get me a broom…” he said humbly, he was very thankful for it and very excited to be holding it in his hands, but he was also a nice, good person and he wasn’t about to take this act of kindness from his mother for granted. It was especially meaningful because he knew that she was skeptical, or at least she had been, about Quidditch being more important to him than school. “It’s beautiful. Thank you.” he smiled to her.

“Wow—” Sav was the right kind of speechless, and Parvati waited for him to find his words. “I mean,” he continued, “you didn’t have to get me a broom…”
“You’re right,” she told him with a slight pause. “I didn’t have to. I wanted to.” It wasn’t that she thought that he couldn’t have done well without a new broomstick; his old one wasn’t in awful shape, though it could stand the upgrade. “I’m so proud of you, Savtaj.” Maybe Quidditch hadn’t been what she had envisioned for him, but he had grown up and into his own person, and Parvati knew that she needed to respect that. The past few years hadn’t been easy, yet she knew that both of her sons had turned out alright.
“It’s beautiful,” Sav told her. “Thank you.”
“Don’t show off too much,” Parvati teased him gently, though she really wouldn’t mind too much if he showed off to Slytherin’s Quidditch team. “Though you can thank Winnie Meagle for her help with that one,” she smiled, remembering how the girl had come to her aid when she hadn’t known what on earth to get him.

She told him that she was proud of him and Sav couldn’t help but smile at her. That meant everything to him to hear coming from his mother. He wanted to make her proud. He wanted to make her happy. He always felt badly for not getting good marks in school, not for himself, but for his mother. He knew how fond she would have been of him if he tried a little harder in his lessons and scraped together higher marks. But he just couldn’t manage to make himself do so, Quidditch was where his heart was, it was where his talents were. And she had realized that. And that meant everything. Sav always held his mother in very high regard. Especially since all of the drama came out about his father and their family and since his parents divorce. He barely talked to his dad, even when he had to stay with the man, Sav had lost all respect and admiration for the man who fathered him. “Thanks mom.” he said, not for the broom, but for her admission of pride towards her son. “I’ll be sure to thank her.” he agreed.
