Daniel stood at the train station out of the way looking on to the countless families saying goodbye to their children. It had only a been a few months since he was last here but it felt like a life time in a way. His few weeks of just not returning to his father after school had turned into the whole summer and he was just fine with it. It was a little lonely but that’s how he would have felt if he had returned home anyway. It wasn’t a home, it was a roof and walls but it wasn’t a home to anyone but his father anyway. He was thankful he didn’t go back and it had helped him not hate this sight so much. The sight of happy families, parents wishing their kids well as they went off. Daniel was alone but it was better to be alone than hated for being around when he wasn’t wanted. He was still jealous but didn’t hate these families like last time, this was no ones fault but his father and his. These people deserved to be happy at least.
Honestly he wasn’t sure why he was people watching at his point, he wasn’t enjoying being jealous or seeing them happy but here he was. Possible he actually did like to see these happy families even if he couldn’t have one himself. Whatever the reason he had enough and began to push his way through the crowd to board the train. Everything he needed was still in the backpack on his shoulder. It was worn and damaged but it was his and it held everything with room to spare. Easier than a trunk too as they were all in the way. Fighting through the crowd he got onto the train intending to find an empty cabin, the Ilvermorny students were all here too but he could find the ones he knew personally later.
Finally after having enough of the people and their trunks blocking the corridors of the train he found a cabin near the back. It was empty and that’s all he asked for really as he threw his backpack in the seat beside him and finally sat down. Daniel could still hear everyone both in the corridor and outside the train. Why did everyone have to be so loud he thought to himself as he shook his head. He closed his eyes and ignore it, “just one more year.” He muttered to himself, it had become a type a mantra at this point. Others had more uplifting things to say to keep calm or give them courage, this is what he had.

NATE HADN'T BEEN SURE IF HE'D EVER SEE THE Express again. Chain-smoking steam, teeming with families and gross goodbyes. It was kind of embarrassing, but fuck he was glad to see it. Hands tucked in to his pockets, he stood away from the Forrester's as they kissed Oliver goodbye. He would walk his brother on the train, but that was where he would leave him. Oliver fared better without Nate hanging around. His permanent scowl tended to scare off strangers.
With a prompt goodbye and a promise to find him later, Nate split off from his little brother and scaled the length of the train looking for an empty compartment to occupy. So, the nostalgia faded fast. With the stench of sweat, perfume and shoe polish permeating the air, Nate was swiftly reminded of all the reasons he hated the Express and, maybe, everyone in it. Perhaps that was why he stole it.
Nate's suitcase was small and modest, he'd always liked being able to carry everything he owned at Hogwarts a single suitcase. It also made slipping by the group of 'Claw's sinfully easy. Why he was able to slip one hand out and snatch the pink ball of fluff from atop a gigantic roller trunk, not even stopping as he did. The girl had left it entirely unattended, which really made it property of 'Finders Keepers'. Which is how Nate justified the theft. Though she clearly disagreed as soon enough a fuss began behind him.
Nate pulled the nearest compartment door open, wedging it open with his foot as he slipped through the smallest of gaps. It closed to the high pitched sound of 'Where is MY Pygmy Puff!'. The kind of entitled cawing that didn't make him feel guilty at all. He lifted his head, bottom lip wedged between his top teeth, only to make eye contact with the sole occupant of the compartment.
"'Sup," He said shortly, maintaining a certain level of confident eye contact. Had he heard? It was hard not to. He didn't dare appear guilty, though. Not even as he slipped the florescent pink Puff in to the pocket of his hooded sweatshirt. A good few moments late to be completely undiscovered. Without a single word about it, Nate lifted his case and stowed it in the overhead compartment. He sat heavily in the seat opposite, something giving a rather conspicuous squeak from inside one of his pockets.

Daniel hadn’t been paying much attention to anything besides looking outside the train. Eventually all these people would be in the train or gone and they could finally be on their way to Hogwarts once more. Still the sounds from the corridor got even louder as people were trying to find a place to sit and Daniel could only assume find friends also. The door to the compartment Daniel was in opened which just increased the volume from the corridor. He braced himself for whoever it might be as he slowly looked over. What he came to see was a boy, possibly his age, standing in his compartment. Some girl was yelling about her Pygmy puff as the boy shut the door. He didn’t think much of it besides that he was glad he door was shut once more.
The boy acknowledged Daniel presence and all he could do was the same. “Sup?” He repeated his greeting of sorts but it might as well have sounded like he had said what with how he said it. The boy stowed away his things and Daniel began to think he was stuck here with this person now. The boy sat down and with that there was a familiar squeaking sound. Daniel began to suspect something but he wasn’t all too concerned nor had any proof just yet. “Not many boys like Pygmy puffs as pets. You’re different I see.”

SITTING HEAVILY IN HIS SEAT, NATE WAS CONTENT with staring out the window wordlessly until the smoke cleared. Though, he was keenly aware that he didn't exactly appear inconspicuous. Who knew Pygmy Puff's were so vocal. The boy opposite was quick to broach the subject. Nate shifted in place, straightening slightly from his slumped position. He didn't touch his pocket.
"Really?" He asked, unperturbed. "Why, because they're pink?" And then he felt his cheek twitch with his desire to smirk. "But you're wrong, I don't have much of a preference." And it was true, he'd never really cared about the little fad a day in his life. It only mattered that it was there, and he could take it. He didn't quite understand why. "Do you?"
