The Whomping Willow wasn't exactly anyone's first choice when it came to a "hang out" spot. And rarely did people get too close to it, for fear of perhaps getting tangled up in its limbs. But most people weren't Ichabod Nash. Iggy had always had a fascination with the tree, ever since his first year and by year three he had spent enough time outside around it to really study how it moved. His fifth year he became brave enough to try to get closer to it. He had yet to ever get up to the trunk, but it was a goal of his before graduation. Was it crazy? Maybe. But he also figured casting 'immobulus' couldn't hurt either, if he had to.
Usually Iggy ventured this far out to the willow to smoke a cigarette or two. But when the Slytherin had already walked across the grounds and reached the tree, he dug into his robe pockets only to find that he had forgotten his pack of cigarettes back up at the castle, and Iggy was far too lazy to walk all the way back up and down again just for one cigarette. So he decided he would stand out by the Whomping Willow for a bit and see how long he could go until he started jonesing. A true test of his patience.

While she had only just arrived at Hogwarts, Kaylee hadn’t gotten much of a chance to explore the grounds around the castle. From what she had seen of them, they were so expansive that they seemed to go on forever. There was also the lake, which she had seen from the inside of the Slytherin Common Room, too. Though some people had mentioned that there was a Giant Squid lurking in its depths, she hadn’t yet seen it for herself.
Perhaps the most intriguing—and intimidating—feature of the grounds was a massive willow tree that, based on what the Hogwarts students said about it, seemed to have some degree of sentience. They called it the “Whomping Willow”, which seemed like an accurate name for it, in Kaylee’s view. She didn’t think that coming too close to the tree would be a very good idea, but she at least wanted to be able to say that she had seen it.
With some time to spare, she decided to walk down to where the tree was. The weather was still pleasant enough that the walk wasn’t too bad, and it felt nice to get some fresh air. Kaylee stopped far enough away from the Whomping Willow that she could watch it without the possibility of injury, but she noticed that someone else was even closer to the tree than she.
From where she stood, it looked as though the young man—a boy she thought she recognized as belonging to her own House—was standing right where he was likely to end up hit by one of the tree’s flailing branches. Not wishing him any harm nor wanting to be held responsible for not speaking up if a branch were to come swooping down his way, Kaylee called out to him in warning.
“Hey!” she yelled, trying to get the boy’s attention. Even though she didn’t know his name, Kaylee was certain that her voice had carried without the need to magically amplify it. “I think you’re a little too close to the tree!”
