beautiful enemy
Today was another typical day at his apothecary shop in Knockturn Alley for Roderick, and he was in the back of the shop brewing a potion while he was waiting for customers to arrive. Although, Rod did not really need customers--he even hated having to sell his hard work to people who he knew did not share his blood supremacist beliefs, or were just common, everyday, useless people. More often than not, both. But he was rich enough to laze around and idle like a deadbeat oaf. Fortunately, though, even if he was vain and conceited, he did have a work ethic. He believed in upholding that superior image of wealthy purebloods, the top of society. He could not afford to look anything but the best in his profession.
And really, Rod did enjoy what he did. Potions was his passion, just as Quidditch was his older brother's and unicorns were his sister's. Although, Rod was really trying to get his younger brother Simon to become his protege in potions. Out of all of his siblings, Simon was his favorite. There was something about a younger brother that made Rod more caring toward, and Simon listened to him. He was a good lad, viewing Rod as a role-model and doing as Rod expected him to do most of the time. He never disappointed Rod. And Rod was really hoping that he'd convince the newly graduated boy to become a Death Eater, just like he was. His whole family were committed Death Eaters, even his older brother Josiah, who wasted time on the sport playing catch the ball in the air. It was only his sister Elizabeth who was being a coward. She was fierce, but not fierce enough to "jeopardize" herself by becoming a Death Eater. Well, how pathetic.

It was not every day that Odette Greyback found herself in Knockturn Alley but today was different. She was about to venture back out to Egypt for another mission in curse breaking and this time she needed a potion of sorts. She had been told that one of the main curses in this next area of ruins caused extreme paralysis so Odette was to find an Anti-Paralysis potion. Unfortunately, she had no luck finding in Diagon Alley so she thought she might as well head down to Knockturn Alley to see if the apothecary there had the potion she was needing.
Odette was not a fan of Knockturn Alley. There were still wanted signs up all over the alley with her "father's" face plastered all over it. Seeing them only fueled her hatred for him more. She shook her head in disgust as she entered Knockturn Alley and saw the first one at the entrance. In the photo, Greyback appeared to be growling fiercely. Odette could feel a fiery lump in her chest, just wanted to scream and tear the sign down in a fiery rage of disgust. But Odette was able to hold herself together, as she always was in compromising situations. She liked to think she had a fairly good temper and "poker face" when it came to many things. She prided herself in that, actually. She was a bit stuck up, but of course Odette didn't see herself that way.
Letting out a deep breath to calm herself, Odette entered the apothecary and the bell over the door gave out a little "ding." She looked around the shop. She had been in here before for many things when it came to her job. Often times the Curse Breakers needed to bring certain potions with them in case of emergencies or as precautions. She was no stranger to the apothecary in Knockturn Alley, she just tried not to make a habit of always coming here.

Rod had just dropped an ingredient into the cauldron, and was about to add in the rest of it when he heard someone enter the shop. It was obvious by the sound the doorbell made every time a human being decided to enter and bother him. He cursed before stepping away from the cauldron and thus making his way to the front of the shop again. It was not wise to spurn the appearance of customers, but Rod was different. He only had a shop because it gave him an excuse to brew potions excessively, and brewing potions was his passion. He was decent enough to know that he'd have to serve customers, though, because there was no use having a shop if he didn't gain something from it besides brewing. He wished that most of his customers could be pureblood-ed and bigoted people like him, but unfortunately that couldn't be so. He did have to sell his stock to unworthy people if he wanted to keep the shop, because it wasn't all the time when wealthy pureblood supremacists shopped for potions. He would have to cater to the people he didn't like as well, because they consisted of most of the population. That was just how society and the economy worked, sadly. And anyway, he did want to keep his shop because he felt proud about having an established potion business of his own, which was why he was even making an effort to keep it in the first place.
Once he appeared from the back of the shop, his eyes laid upon a very beautiful young woman. She was one of the most beautiful women he had ever seen, and normally that would incur his lust. But Roderick never allowed himself to feel that way around women he barely knew. She could be a half-blood or a mud-blood for all he knew, and if he didn't know her that probably meant she wasn't in his social circle of highborn and like-minded purebloods that he associated with. She was automatically on his dislike list, then. He would still have to show a level of courtesy, though, but that didn't mean he had to be warm and friendly.
He had been gazing at her with cold, assessing eyes the moment he looked at her, and continued to do so. Rod crossed his arms, and arching an eyebrow, he asked tonelessly, "Is there anything you need?" It was better than hissing and snapping, at least, and he often felt on the verge of doing that, so he always commended himself for using self-control, as little as he liked it. He had to be mindful that serving customers was an important objective to his business, and even if he didn't like the people who gave him money he couldn't drive them off with ultimate rudeness, either. This was Knockturn Alley so he didn't need to be sweet like butter in order to have repeat customers, at least. He could afford to be pretty hard on the edges, and he was used to dealing with people in the shop anyway. Plus, for now, the woman hadn't done anything to make him feel more disgusted than his regular feeling of annoyance and irritation, so he didn't need act too callous, yet. And, anyway, she was easy on the eyes to look at, which did help him feel less repulsed.

Odette walked slowly through the shop, looking around at some potions ingredients. No one had yet come out to greet her, which the stuck up part of Odette thought was rude, but the sensible side of her didn't that so much. It was Knockturn Alley, after all. Odette knew better than to go wandering around with open arms to just any old bloke. It was a dodgey place, and should be treated as such. People disappeared in this alley, got hurt. And with all of the recent killings? It was safe to say that Odette was extra cautious of who she spoke to and trusted.
As she looked around the shop for what she needed, Odette stumbled upon a shelf of a few ingredients she had not seen before. On the shelf was one bottle with "unicorn blood" written on it. Odette's eyebrows raised slightly as she pursed her lips, interested. She eyed the bottle a moment, trying to decipher its properties. It was then that her eyes drifted to the bottle next to it, "dragon blood." "Interesting," the young woman thought as she narrowed her eyes at the rest of the bottles titled with different kinds of blood. Then she heard a voice.
Odette was often too callous or unimpressed to be surprised by the sudden sound of the shopkeeper's voice. If anything, she was relieved to hear it. It was about time, after all. She turned to face him, slightly surprised to see someone that looked to be near her own age. She had been expecting someone at least over fifty. But this young man? He was a pleasant surprise. He didn't look half bad, either. In fact, Odette found him to be quite handsome. But his tone? A little uninviting. Then again, this was Knockturn Alley. That tone ought to just be the official accent of this alley.
After a brief moment of silence, Odette finally opened her mouth to speak. "Yes, actually," she said in her own toneless voice. "I'm looking for any antidotes you may have for common poisons." She said, certain of herself. Odette knew how to do business and she didn't play around, no matter how interesting she found the shopkeeper to be.

((MAJOR LATE! I'm so sorry!))
Rod continued to observe the young woman. She looked to be around his age, which probably meant that they had been in Hogwarts at about the same time. He probably hadn't noticed her as he hadn't been the most curious about those who weren't in his circle of privileged cronies--truth be told Rod had hung out with half-bloods before, but he wasn't all that ashamed of it. It was shameful to be a half-blood, but then again, purebloods were rare and half-bloods were rather necessary to keep the the line of purebloods from becoming too...demented, to say the least, even if the Montforts had not been desperate enough to resort to such an undesirable stratagem. But still, at least those half-bloods Rod had found himself around were also of the high class, and they didn't the muggle part of themselves. If he was correct, this woman was just any regular person who liked anybody, even muggles. It went without saying that Rod thought that being fascinated with muggles was like having Stockholm Syndrome; muggles had been heinous and cruel towards wizards in the past and there was a reason why the wizarding community was kept secret from them.
But aside from the argument about blood purity and muggles, he was actually focusing upon the woman herself, and her attributes. She was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful women he had laid his eyes upon. A pity that she couldn't have been born than just a pretty face. He wouldn't have mind dallying with her...but would be willing to dirty his hands on someone who wasn't, well, worthy? For one, he didn't know her beliefs and her personality, and those were just as important as blood purity.
At least he would have a glimpse of her disposition. She was very calm, composed, and somewhat cold; it seemed that she was reciprocating his barren tone in full measure. Roderick almost smiled; he liked that. At least he could respect that. Beautiful and with an agreeable demeanor...not bad for someone who potentially wasn't blessed with good birth or didn't have the right set of beliefs; not to mention, she didn't seem like a regular Knockturn Alley wanderer either. Usually, those who were not frequenters of Knockturn Alley were stupid and/or giddy, but this woman seemed to be able to blend in well. He wouldn't be surprised if she had been a Slytherin.
He couldn't help but acknowledge that some people, even if they weren't prissy, uptight purebloods, could be respectable in other areas. He was, despite himself, liking this woman and her company a bit. Of course, he wasn't going to show that. He wasn't one to reveal his emotions that easily, least of all to someone who he barely knew and might just be a muggleborn. Nonetheless, she asked for an antidote for common poisons, and Rod knew just the one that would suit her needs.
He took out his wand and pointed it at a small bottle with an image of a skull on it on a shelf and summoned it, making it float mid-air in front of the woman. "Well, this is quite bluntly called Antidote to Common Poisons. It reverses and counteracts the effects of ordinary poisons," he said. "I believe this would be what you need, based on your explanation."
