Kinsey felt broken internally, but she didn't have anyone to talk to. She wasn't sure if she even wanted to try and talk about it. Things seemed so messed up and confusing and just ... wrong. Her best friend, the boy she was in love with, was suddenly engaged to someone else and there was a hole in the pit of her stomach. She loved him, but she couldn't go to him anymore. She couldn't tell him about her struggles or worries or ask him to comfort her after running into Dom because it felt wrong now.
Before her relationship with Riley Fudge, Kinsey was used to being alone. She was used to keeping everyone at arms length because, as a general rule, knowing the intentions of those around her was a struggle. It gave her more insight than she wanted, and she had a hard time trusting people since she could sense every little white lie. He'd changed all that, wanting to protect her and comfort her and simply be with her constantly. It was the most liberating feeling, knowing she could trust someone. Until she couldn't anymore.
So Kinsey threw herself into her schoolwork, as she'd always done before. She studied in a small corner in the common room, not making eye contact with anyone. She was on her way there today, rushing through the entrance and making her way to the corner when she tripped over a bump in the rug and found all her supplies sprawled out on the common room floor. Great.

first week of september Ellie was getting the hang of being a student at Hogwarts, and while she spent a lot of time with her transfer friends, she was making friends with those that had already been within the great halls of this historic school. She was growing closer to those in her house, many of them very friendly towards her, and while she realized that she was the new girl among them, she enjoyed their attention. Something that Ellie wasn’t usually used to. Today was no different; she had entered the Ravenclaw home, heading up the steps to the dorm rooms where the females slept. She grabbed a few things before making her way back down the steps, only this time, she was stopped by something traumatic. Another Ravenclaw girl had gone tumbling to the ground, seeming to have tripped over a bump in the horrible rug. She was glad to know that she wasn’t the only one that had done that, having done it this morning and had fixed it. It seemed the feet of Ravenclaw was bad enough to destroy the rug once more. Placing her things down on the closest table, she lurched forward and began to grab the supplies that had escaped the girl’s hands, growing closer to the young girl. “Are you okay?” she questioned, wanting to make sure the girl was fine. “I did the same thing this morning, that rug is evil…” she breathed out.

What Kinsey didn't expect when she fell to the ground was for somebody to help her. She looked up at the girl, recognized her as a transfer from Ilvermorny that was in the same year as Kinsey. They hadn't spoken. It wasn't necessarily intentional, except for the fact that Kinsey tried to stay away from most people as a general rule. She couldn't help it, with her ability. Knowing the intentions of those around you, especially when they were being dishonest and deceptive, wasn't the sort of thing Kinsey felt like she could deal with.
Kinsey nodded at the girl. "Yeah, yeah I'm fine," she stammered as she started reaching for her things as well. She glanced at the other girl, who was full of positive intentions. Kinsey wouldn't know what they were exactly unless she touched her, which she wasn't planning on doing any time soon. She gave a soft chuckle when the girl mentioned having done the same thing earlier. "Yeah, it's always like this. I was just ... distracted and forgot." Having collected all her things, she looked up at the girl. "I'm Kinsey, by the way, and thank you for your help."

The girl quickly stammered that she was fine, as she also began to clean up the mess that had been made by her tripping. The girl let out a small chuckle, which made Ellie smile, and she nodded her head. “Good to know this is something to look forward to each time I come in the common rooms,” she said with a laugh as she held out the stuff that she had collected towards the girl that introduced herself as Kinsey. “You are very welcome Kinsey, I’m Ellie,” she said with a smile on her face as she stood to her full height. The girl didn’t seem much older than Ellie was, she was either in the same grade as Ellie or even the year up.

Despite herself, Kinsey laughed a little louder at the girl's comment. She was funny, which wasn't something that Kinsey normally got to know about anyone, what with keeping to herself all the time. Maybe she needed to get out more, but there were complications with that. The more a person knew her, the harder it was for her to keep her secret about her ability. Riley was evidence of that. Then again, he was hyper observant, so maybe being with others wouldn't bee too difficult ... Kinsey wasn't sure, but she did realize that this was not the place to debate it mentally. She was supposed to be interacting with someone right now. "Nice to meet you," Kinsey said out of habit. "You're a transfer, right? What year are you in?" They looked to be about the same age, maybe, but Kinsey didn't want to assume. Besides that, she definitely wasn't paying attention to the new people in her classes. She was too focused on not staring at Riley, not that that was working at all.

Hearing the girl laugh at her joke, one of her own, was a breath of fresh air and a smile of excitement played on the young brunette girl’s lips. It was nice to know that she could say something that would make someone else laugh, not just herself. Kinsey questioned if she was a transfer, which got a short nod from Ellie before she was asked what year she was from. She smiled, “Yeah—is it that obvious?” she questioned with a small laugh, and then she continued, “I’m a sixth year.”“What about yourself Kinsey? If I’d have to guess, you’re either in the same year or the next one up,” she said with a small smile on her lips, tucking a strand of brunette hair behind her ear as she did so.

Ellie admitted that she was a transfer, but that wasn't a big surprise to Kinsey. She gave a shrug at the question. "Well, yeah. I mean, I haven't seen you at school before, so that's a big hint." Then Kinsey gave a short laugh, "And you're accent gives you away a bit." It was true! Spotting the Americans wasn't very hard. Kinsey didn't mind that they were there. In fact, it was kind of nice, actually. "You got it! I'm a seventh year. Been coming here since I was eleven, so if you have any questions about the place, I can probably help you out with them." She nodded to a window seat across the room and made her way there. She actually wanted to get to know this girl a little, so they might as well sit down. "What do you think of Hogwarts so far?"

Ellie let out a little laugh, nodding her head, “That’ll do it,” she breathed out a bit awkwardly as the girl revealed not having seen her before in the school and the fact that her accent was more American than British. Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as a blush appearing on her cheeks. “Oh, that’s wonderful! Being a seventh year and having the whole world open up for you, that’s kind of nice,” she said with a smile on her face, “Aw—thanks, that’s sweet of you, really.” When asked about what she thought about Hogwarts thus far, she smiled brightly, “It’s nice. The workload is a bit different from what I’m used to, but I’ll get there. The castle is beautiful though, tons of adventures just waiting to happen,” she said with a small laugh at her excited tone.

Kinsey couldn't help but smile a little at the other girl's enthusiasm at her being a seventh year. "Yeah, it's kind of exciting. The only problem is that I'm not entirely sure what I want to do once I leave school." She shrugged her shoulders a little, "But I'm working on figuring that out, so it shouldn't be a big deal. It's kind of interesting being in the top group in the school." Kinsey was actually pretty proud of herself for being so positive. She wasn't letting herself think about Riley and the sadness that filled her most of the time because of that situation. Maybe she just needed to reach out and make more friends. Ellie seemed like a good one to have with her enthusiasm and happiness. She nodded, "It is beautiful here. Oh! You'll probably love it once the snow falls. I mean, yeah it gets pretty cold, but it's also very pretty to look outside the windows and such." Kinsey didn't like being cold, but she could appreciate a good view, right?

Ellie frowned deeply, “Are you interested in anything? I don’t know what magical jobs are out there, but I’m sure once you figure out what you are interested in…the whole world will open up to you,” she said, the frown turning to a small smile. Ellie didn’t know what she wanted to do with her life, or if she’d stay within London after she finished schooling at Hogwarts. She might, start her life over here and leave behind her parents. She’d have to spread her wings eventually, and having her sister here meant that she had more wiggle room. Ellie’s eyes widened at the thought of Hogwarts covered in snow, “I saw pictures of a snowy Hogwarts in postcards around Diagon Alley, but the idea of seeing it with my own eyes sounds just – would it be lame to say, magical?” she questioned with a small giggle. Shrugging her shoulders, “The cold never really bothered me anyway, but I don’t know the difference between winter here in comparison to the states.”

Kinsey shrugged. She knew she wasn't going to be much of a help with this, but honestly she had no idea what she was supposed to do. This was something she and Riley once joked about figuring out together, but now that he was engaged she wasn't figuring anything out about him. "I'm not sure. I like learning new things, so I'm pretty sure I'd like most jobs, but I'm not sure what to try. Does that make any sense?" Kinsey liked Ancient Runes and Arithmancy and ... well, basically she loved all her subjects, which was why school was no help. She laughed softly, "I'm sure I'll figure something out. At least, maybe I'll just try a bunch of jobs until I find one I really like." Kinsey wasn't sure if that was what most people did or not, but she didn't really care.
Kinsey laughed when Ellie's excitement became obvious. "That's not lame. It's wonderful. I'm sure you'll love it!" She looked at the other girl curiously, "Where exactly are you from? I don't know much about the United States." It could be interesting to learn more though. Ashley was always up for learning new things.

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] I CAN TASTE THE DANGER [attr="class","next"] Ellie nodded her head, “Yeah—that makes perfect sense. Who knows, maybe by the end of term and before graduation you’ll have it figured out,” she said with enthusiasm before she laughed “Or you can try a few odd jobs here and there to figure it out.” Ellie was in the same boat, she had an idea of what she wanted but not entirely, but at least, she had another year to figure it out though. She wasn’t even sure if she’d stay in London or if she’d return to the states, she had a while to figure it out though. Her sister had made the move, and she was already here, so why not stay? She internally shook her head from the thought. Ellie let out a giggle, “I literally cannot wait for it to happen,” she said with a smile on her face. “I’m from New York,” she said with a smile on her face, answering the question that was presented to her. “It’s along the East Coast in like the northern area of the coast, if you’ve ever seen a map of the States,” she said with a small laugh.

Kinsey smiled and nodded back as the younger girl tried to encourage her some more. "Yeah, I'm going to try and figure something out by graduation. If not I probably will try out random jobs until I find one that fits." She sighed, "I guess it's just hard to find time to look into jobs when I'm so busy with all the work preparing me for my N.E.W.T.S. you know?" She realized right after she spoke that the other girl couldn't understand, yet.
Kinsey's smile faltered just a little when the girl explained she was from New York. "If you're from New York, don't you see snow every year?" she asked. She didn't know a lot about the United States, but she thought that state was in the North, which was confirmed as the girl spoke a bit more. "Why are you so excited for the snow here?" She was merging their conversations, but there wasn't anything wrong with that. "Do you miss it there?"

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] I CAN TASTE THE DANGER [attr="class","next"] Ellie nodded her head eagerly at the older girl’s statement, “Always the best option.” she said before frowning, she didn’t know what NEWTS were, she couldn’t remember if that was something they had to do back at Ilvermorny or if it was something that just happened here at Hogwarts. “I don’t know what those are, but I can see what you mean. Kind of hard to think about your future when you have that stuff in the way… I guess it’s a big test?” she questioned, biting her bottom lip for a second as she stood there in thought. “Yeah—I am, and sometimes it doesn’t. It depends on the weather; America weather is crazy sometimes. I heard the snow gets deep here, something that rarely happened back home. So I’m excited,” she said with a small laugh. She shrugged her shoulders, “I don’t know. It’ll be a new experience, and I’m always down for new things happening in my life,” she said truthfully. And then came the last question of the girl, and she pondered for a moment, “I do. Sometimes. I’m probably going to go back and visit my parents during the holiday. But my sister is close by in London; it makes it a bit easier transitioning over.”

Kinsey smiled when the other girl agreed with her, then paused before asking a bit more about the test. "Oh, NEWTS are like the end-of-year exams that we take our last year in school. They're a good indication of how well the school is teaching, so there is a lot of pressure to do well. Also, lots of employers look at them before hiring you for positions and such. Do you not have them in Ilvermorny?" Kinsey had no idea how school worked in America but she was definitely curious now.
Ellie explained that it didn't always snow in New York and Kinsey listened politely. "Yeah, the snow gets pretty deep here. It's fun to have snowball fights in and stuff." The girl then started explaining how she felt about being here and Kinsey nodded. "Yeah that makes sense. I can't imagine what it would be like to go to a completely new school, but you kind of like it here, right?" Kinsey didn't know why she cared that the girl was enjoying Hogwarts, but she did.
