Kinsey nodded when Kaylee mentioned that she was in the same year as the triplets. "Yeah, they're sixth years," she confirmed. "They're in Hufflepuff." Wait ... Kinsey didn't even know which house the other girl was in. "What house are you in?" Had she already asked that question? Kinsey honestly couldn't remember, which was annoying for her. She didn't like to forget things like this. Kinsey nodded as she explained more about her family. "It sounds like you are all pretty close," she commented, feeling the familiar pang as Diana, Dustin and even Cara came to mind. She used to be close to two of them, but now she barely spoke to any of those who were older than her. At least she still had the triplets. She trailed off, thinking about her own family now. kaylee māhealani mahi'ai

Kinsey answered her, confirming that her younger sisters, the triplets, were in their sixth year. They were in Hufflepuff, she added, before asking what House she was in. Kaylee only then realized that she didn’t know Kinsey’s House, either. Somehow, in their discussion of books—and onto the subject of their siblings—neither one of them had mentioned their respective Houses.
“I’m in Slytherin here,” Kaylee stated. From her interactions with the other students in Slytherin so far, not all of them seemed like the kind of people whom she naturally would have gravitated towards. “I was in Horned Serpent at Ilvermorny.” The Houses clearly didn’t correspond exactly between Ilvermorny and Hogwarts, though she could have done without being in the same one as Ashley Fontaine again.
“You?” Kaylee returned. She didn’t think that she had seen Kinsey in the Slytherin Common Room at all, though their being a year apart might have been the cause of that.
When she elaborated on her siblings, Kinsey responded by saying that it sounded as though they were close. The way she said it, however, left Kaylee to wonder if there was actually something that Kinsey had left unsaid.
“We are, I guess,” Kaylee told her, giving a little shrug of her shoulders. “I mean, it’s not like we don’t occasionally fight, and sharing a room—all three of us—for months was a little annoying…” Some space of her own would have been nice, but she knew that their parents had done well enough just to afford to send all three of them to Britain. “But they are my ‘ohana, and I love them.”

Kinsey nodded when Kaylee said she was a Slytherin. She had a feeling that Kaylee wasn't one of the mean Slytherin girls. She seemed to be really positive and happy, which was nice. Kinsey had a hard time dealing with people that didn't have such positive intentions. It was hard to figure out how to deal with them, even though now she was trying to actually do that instead of just running away. "Do you miss Ilvermorny?" Kinsey asked when the girl mentioned her other school. She couldn't imagine what it would be like to go to a school for most of your life and then have to switch for who-knew how long. Hopefully they'd be able to go back next year, but there were no guarantees. "I'm a Ravenclaw," she told her instantly, giving a small smile as she said the name. "Some fighting is normal with siblings," Kinsey answered. Granted, she fought with her siblings more than was normal, but she didn't have to say that. "I think you sound like a very good sister." She was trying to be encouraging. kaylee māhealani mahi'ai

“Do you miss Ilvermorny?”
Kaylee had gotten that same question a few times since she had arrived, and, every time, she hadn’t really known how to answer it satisfactorily. She did miss Ilvermorny, though it hadn’t even been long since she had last been there. She missed the familiarity of the castle she knew; she missed even little details that she hadn’t ever dwelled upon when she had been there but that she missed all the more because she didn’t have the same attachment to Hogwarts. Still, though, admitting to missing her own school made Kaylee feel uncomfortable, like it made her somehow ungrateful for the opportunity she had been given to come to Hogwarts. It was one thing to reminisce with her fellow Ilvermorny students, as she had done with Wyatt, but now that she was at Hogwarts…
“I mean,” she began, not noticing that her voice had become softer, “I don’t dislike Hogwarts, but… yeah, I miss it.” Eventually, she assumed, she would adjust to how things were at Hogwarts. Maybe she would even find it hard to return to Ilvermorny afterwards; she didn’t know.
Kinsey said that she was a Ravenclaw. From what Kaylee knew of Ravenclaw House, it wasn’t too different from Horned Serpent, she didn’t think. Slytherin was a little bit different; more people seemed to care about blood purity than anyone at Ilvermorny ever had. Not everyone was terrible, but it seemed to Kaylee as though there was a bit of conflict brewing among the Slytherin girls in her year.
Kaylee nodded. She didn’t think that she would have minded being put in Ravenclaw, which was where Ellie had been Sorted. It would have meant getting a brief respite from having to deal with Ashley Fontaine constantly.
Still, at least she had her siblings with her. Kinsey said that some fighting with siblings was normal, and Kaylee couldn’t disagree entirely. Nobody could get along perfectly one hundred percent of the time.
“I think you sound like a very good sister,” Kinsey complimented her.
She knew that she wasn’t always the perfect sister, but Kaylee did make an effort. “I try,” she answered, giving a little smile. Being the oldest, she had to be a role model at least some of the time. “You make it sound like I’m perfect, though,” she laughed. “I’m really not!”

Kinsey smiled just a little when the other girl started talking slowly, stating that she didn't dislike Hogwarts, but that she did miss her old school. "I'd miss Hogwarts if I had to leave," Kinsey answered, thinking about it from that point of view for perhaps the first time. Thing was, she loved this school. Despite all the difficult experiences she'd been through, it was like a second home to her and she loved it. If someone destroyed it, she didn't know what she would do. "So I don't judge you for that at all." She wanted Kaylee to feel comfortable talking to her, to know that she wasn't asking questions and looking for reasons to become offended. Kinsey was just naturally curious. The girl nodded a bit as the conversation continued, but didn't say much and Kinsey didn't push her to. Once more, she didn't want the other girl to feel uncomfortable around her. She was just trying to make conversation and try to help the girl know she fit in. She shrugged when the other girl said that she was trying, but she wasn't perfect. "That's what matters, isn't it? The trying? None of us are perfect, especially when it comes to family," her mind flitted to her own family, how broken they were and how impossible it was to try and fix everything with them, "but that doesn't mean something's wrong with it as long as we keep trying." Which was where her familial difficulties came in. Dustin left, wouldn't talk to her anymore. Diana wouldn't either. Cara might, if she was in a good mood. At least Kinsey could still try to have a relationship with her younger sisters. They weren't too difficult to deal with. "Well I'm glad I could help you a little," Kinsey said, deciding it was probably time to get out of the girl's way. "I'll let you get back to your studying, or whatever you need to do. It was nice to meet you though, Kaylee." kaylee māhealani mahi'ai (you can end it, I think)

Kinsey stated that she would miss Hogwarts if she had to leave it. Because of that, she said, she couldn’t judge her for missing Ilvermorny, something about which Kaylee was glad. Some days had been better than others, but that didn’t change that she wished she could have been back at her own school. Just transplant the good things about Hogwarts back to Ilvermorny, she thought, and move Massachusetts a little bit closer to her home in Hawaii… That would have been perfect.
As she tried to explain that she really wasn’t the image of big-sister perfection that Kinsey had made her out to be, Kinsey shrugged. “That's what matters, isn't it? The trying?” Kaylee supposed so. “None of us are perfect, especially when it comes to family, but that doesn't mean something's wrong with it as long as we keep trying.”
Kaylee felt lucky that, as wild as things could sometimes be for her at home, her family itself was pretty functional. They didn’t have piles of money sitting around at their disposal, but they made do. Kaylee wasn’t sure if she would have liked it if her family were wealthy, anyway. It would alleviate some of their stress, maybe, but she had a feeling that it would only cause more problems. They had their challenges, but there wasn’t anything in terms of their relationships with one another with which they had to contend, fortunately. Other people, Kaylee knew, couldn’t say the same. “Yeah, just trying to be the best version of yourself that you can be,” she agreed.
Kinsey soon expressed that she was glad to have been able to help her. “I'll let you get back to your studying, or whatever you need to do. It was nice to meet you though, Kaylee.”
“Thanks for helping me out, Kinsey,” she smiled in response. “I’ll see you around.”
