ELI NODDED SINCERELY, EYES WIDE AS HE thought about her request. "I can do that," He said, his mouth going from pursed to smiling in a matter of seconds. And he could. Or at least, he would try. For some reason in the space of no time at all what Ashley thought mattered. He wanted her to like him, to enjoy spending time with him. Even if that meant doing it on the down low.
After he spun and yelled and made a big fuss, he stopped to look at her. Always with a moment of uncertainty. Like he might turn and she'd be mad at him, or upset. Upset was worse, he thought. It was the unpredictability. How different she was from his usual friends. But, she was smiling. And that made him smile wider. He walked back towards her, reaching out to poke a finger in her stomach jokingly. "You don't have to whisper, it's not the frogs bed time yet." He lifted his eyebrows and smirked, but really he just thought it was cute.
Looking around, Eli realised she was right, though. "Yeah, it is." He said, as if confused by the concept of nightfall. "Time flies, huh?" He said absently, thinking about how it had felt like no time at all, being with her. "C'mon, I'll walk you back." He said, nudging her shoulder with his as he passed.

Ashley grinned when Eli said that he could do that. “Thanks,” she said easily. She didn’t feel like she really had to say more than that, but she couldn’t help but feel relieved that he was willing to do that for her. She figured it probably wasn’t something he did a lot since he was so impulsive, but she was glad he would do things for her. She stepped away, laughing, when he poked her. “Hey! Don’t do that,” she pushed at his shoulder, moving a little ways away from him. Another one of her secrets that she didn’t want people to know was that she was very ticklish. Most people were intimidated by her enough that they wouldn’t even try to tickle her, but she had a feeling Eli wouldn’t be one of those people. She decided to try and distract him. “Yeah, yeah. Just because you want to shout at the sky doesn’t mean I do.” She did like how confident he seemed here. He wasn’t looking over his shoulder, worrying that someone would find them. He’d probably done this a lot. Eli looked surprised when she said that it was dark and Ashley couldn’t help but laugh. At least she wasn’t the only one distracted enough that she couldn’t notice. She nodded when he mentioned time flying. “Apparently. I guess it’s just more evidence that we’re having fun together.” Assuming that he was having fun, but she was pretty sure she’d be able to tell if he wasn’t. His expressions were pretty easy to read. He nudged her shoulder and she started walking with him, elbowing him in the side. “Are we actually going to walk this time?” she teased, smirking over at him. Elijah Theron Fleming

HE GRINNED WHEN SHE SHIRKED AWAY FROM him, but he didn't chase her. Instead he shrugged a little carelessly, knowing she wasn't mad as he let himself be pushed back slightly. But he knew one thing now, she was ticklish. And yes, he did like shouting to the skies but he didn't mind that she preferred to whisper either. "It's like a release," He said with a nod, though his nostrils flared with laughter.
Casually, he slung an arm around her shoulder, encouraging them to walk forward. "That's because I'm a 'fun guy'," He said, eyeing her knowingly. He wasn't making fun of her, because it genuinely pleased him that she thought so. "You're fun, too you know." He said, his face going slack with seriousness for a moment. Beyond his mad bursts of energy, there was a quiet in him too. A part that bred sincerity with her. "Yeah..." He said, but his eyes crinkled at the corners. "For now."

She laughed and shook her head when Eli said that shouting at the sky was a release, but didn’t say anything. Maybe she’d try it sometime, but there was no guarantee of that. Ash got a little self-conscious around others, though she never let them know it. Ash rolled her eyes when he repeated that he was a fun guy. No argument there, and she liked his teasing. Her smile became a little more real, however, when he said that she was fun as well. ”Good thing someone thinks so,” her tone making it obvious that she was teasing. Then again, she wasn’t sure if her friends liked her because she was funny or because of her social standing. Ugh, it didn’t matter. She laughed yet again when he said they’d walk for now. What was it about this guy that made her always feel like laughing? Surprisingly, they did walk on the way back. They walked back to the meadow and picked up the flowers he’d found for her. They walked as they chatted about inconsequential things and Ashley couldn’t remember ever wishing that a walk wouldn’t end like she was for this one. Eventually they were walking up to the pillars where he found her earlier. Ashley turned to him and shrugged, ”Soooo ... thanks for the flowers.” She lifted them up a little. Then she chuckled, ”And for the singing frogs and the swim,” she nudged his shoulder with her own, not sure what else to say. She didn’t want to drag this out, but she also didn’t want to leave. HE NEVER THOUGHT FIRST. AND WHILE THAT served him fine a lot of the time, sometimes Eli forgot that not everybody tried to be so care free. He saw the opposite in Ash. But, not all the time. And maybe that excited him. Though he frowned at her self-deprecating tone. She was probably joking, he knew that, but maybe she wasn't. He didn't bring it up, though, allowing the conversation to flow more shallowly instead.
And walk they did, retracing their steps all the way back to the pillars. Eli talked about his brother and home. He talked about his dad and his strict policy of no animals. He talked about the colony of snails he'd found in his back yard. Everything and nothing. So much so that by the time they were back where they started he hadn't even realised the passage of time. It really did fly.
Leaning back against a pillar, Eli shook out his damp sleeves until he could pull them over his fingers. "Welcome..." He muttered, but he found himself looking at her too long between words. At the way she awkwardly lifted the little bouquet or how the water in her shirt had pulled it down to sit crookedly over one shoulder. Pushing off he reached over and plucked a stray leaf from the top of her head. "I had fun too, you know," He admitted, licking his lips. "I... like hanging out with you." It seemed like he said that a lot to her.
They were lingering, but Eli couldn't think about patrolling students or curfews. "I'll... uh, I'll see you soon." He promised, but awkwardly shifted toward her and back as if he was about to do something but stopped instead. "I'm... gonna hug you now." He warned her before slowly leaning in, giving her time to pull away before he wrapped both arms around her shoulders. She almost fit snugly under his chin, her hair tickling his cheek. "Bye, Ash," He muttered, holding on a little too long before they disentangled. The leaf from her hair was pressed tight in one fist, he hadn't let it go.

How could things be so awkward, yet so perfect at the same time? Spending the last … hour (had it really been that long?) or so with Eli was the most fun she’d had in a long time and she wasn’t ready for it to end. She couldn’t help but wonder if he was feeling the same way, but how was she supposed to know that? Maybe by the fact that he was being just as awkward as she was right now? Well, he was staring at her a bit, not that she minded. He had a small smile on his face that made her think that maybe she didn’t look as terrible as she thought she did. Besides, she was staring at him as well and having a hard time pulling her gaze away from his expressive eyes. Ash tensed slightly when he stepped closer the first time, not sure what he was doing, but then he stepped away with a leaf in his hand and she chuckled softly. “That makes two of us. I liked it all.” Yes, that might be a little repetitive, since she just thanked him for everything, but Ashley didn’t care. She nodded, unable to force herself to say anything when he said he’d see her soon. Sure, they’d see one another daily, but that didn’t mean they’d be able to talk and spend time together like today. That fact made her more disappointed than she cared to admit. He spoke again, pulling her from her thoughts as he leaned closer to give her a hug. Ash wrapped her arms around his waist, feeling warm despite the fact that both of them were in wet clothes. She hugged him a little longer than she probably should, but she didn’t care. It felt nice to have his arms around her. He said goodbye, using her nickname and Ashley was grinning again. It felt so right for him to call her that. “Bye Eli. See you,” she waved her fingers a little and then watched for a moment as he walked away. It was over now, but she didn’t regret one moment of it. --- the end --- Elijah Theron Fleming
