09.xx.2024 What on earth did he want her to say? Cordelia wasn’t the type to name her own work, so doing that for someone else’s seemed strange to her. Did art even need a name? Everyone was going to take a different interpretation from it in the end, so naming it seemed fruitless. This was why she liked taking pictures of buildings. They already had names and shapes to draw from. Imaginary people could be taken in any which way. And like she had already said, it wasn’t her place to give a title to something she hadn’t created. The boy tried to counter back by saying it was hers to name it since he asked, and Cordelia shrugged. She wasn’t buying it. Or naming it. The sketch wasn’t even completed yet anyways, as the boy returned to work on it. Even if she was going to give it a proper title (and that was a big if), she wouldn’t be doing that until he was finished working on it. The current version and final product could end up being wildly different and change how she looked at it anyways. He should have known that.
Cordelia thought she was going to get lost in the silence, staring down at the sketchpad as the boy continued with his work. The ding of the timer sitting next to the wash where her photographs were being rinsed of their chemicals pulled her back out of it, her head spinning to look in its direction before she scampered around the desk to go to work on her own things. All that was left now was to pin the rolls up the drying wrack and then she could start printing the actual photos. That was the payoff for having to go through the whole process. As she made sure the film was intact and not exposed while placing it into the drier, Cordelia kept an eye on the boy. He was strange, and she was going to have to deal with him more often if he joined the club.

SHE WOULDN'T BUDGE AND IT SHOWED, BUT HE couldn't tell if she was being purposefully evasive or not. He thought no, on instinct, but she had a mysterious silence about her that he didn't entirely trust. Perhaps that's why he was pushing his point so much. Normally, when it came to things like his art, he was incredibly private, so he'd never delve this deep with somebody he barely knew. And yet her reluctance to answer seemed to goad him. He let it go eventually, but it bubbled under the surface. Now he really wanted to know what she thought.
Lost in his sketching and racing thoughts, Nate felt the ring of the timer jar through him. He lifted his head quietly, a crease between his brows, and watched as the girl jumped from her seat and hustled over to her little photography cubby. He could tell that the art room had been specifically designed to have this niche for her and he wondered if a lot of people did photography at Hogwarts. He didn't understand why, it seemed like an awfully muggle-type hobby. A bit like his own, but he didn't think about that.
Suppressing his desire to ask her what she was doing, Nate dropped his head again and let her work silently. He wasn't curious enough to make the effort to inquire just yet, plus he was feeling bitter about the fact that she hadn't named his drawing. Though, when he lifted his head again, her shuffling silence drawing his attention as he reached for his sharpener, he found her looking at him. His brows pulled together and he frowned instinctively, wondering what she was thinking. Legilimens would have been handy just then. It was awkward when she looked away, but he didn't. He watched her while he sharpened his shard of charcoal, wondering if she'd say anything, but it was sharp before he heard another sound.
Nate was almost finished with his drawing when he decided to speak again. His head tipped low as he made shaded under the drawings jawline, smudging it roughly with his thumb. "What's your name?" He asked out of the blue, lifting his head with a lazy blink. The drawing was almost complete, at least as a first draft. It had the girl's freckled cheeks and heart-shaped face, her mass of curly hair. But, it also had dark fathomless eyes with the barest distinction between pupil and iris, and her mouth was parted as if in fluid speech. It was like her but also not at all. He didn't quite know why he'd added so much of her, but it fit and he was almost happy with it. "I'm Nathaniel," He said slowly, because if he were asking he might as well answer himself.

09.xx.2024 Silence was the normal atmospheric tone when Cordelia was the only person in the art club room. She liked it that way. The only noise that she ever created, aside from her feet tapping across the floor as she effortlessly developed her photographs, was that of the wash for the film and the occasional hum of some song stuck in her head. Despite it being the art room, it lacked any form of music, which she had always thought was strange. Hogwarts did have a variety of musically inclined students and clubs but that didn’t mean the art kids couldn’t enjoy it too. She had always thought that a record player in the corner of the room would be perfect, especially because it would mask her presence even more. Who would have time to pay attention to her when they had music to listen to?
It probably wouldn’t have mattered to the boy that was watching her though. Technically she was the first one to stare across the room at him, still unsure about him being there, but she had also looked away first and could feel him staring at her the entire time she was placing her film strips into the drying rack, the scratching of his pencil sharpener accompanying the glare. Finding a trivial task at the heating rack, Cordelia slowed her process down immensely, just to try and make the boy get bored of watching her and go back to his drawing. Placing film in a heater wasn’t that interesting, so she didn’t really get why he was watching her in the first place.
Unfortunately she couldn’t stand there forever and pretend she was invisible, and she clearly tested the boy’s patience, his voice finally crackling across the room in her direction. He asked her name, following with his own: Nathaniel. She thought about ignoring him but had a feeling that would get her so far, as her belongings were still on the desk in front of him and she had to return there at some point in time. Instead, Cordelia opted to feign like she hadn’t heard him, “Sorry?” she responded, turning slowly on her heels so that the desks were in front of her once again. “I-I didn’t q-quite catch that…”

STUPIDLY, NATE HAD TRIED TO FILL THE VOID between them, but it felt more like answering an echo. She had looked at him, but seemed intent on pretending he wasn't there moments later. It was quite a familiar gag, because he used it himself often enough, but Nate had discovered he didn't much like it when it was played back on him. She pretended not to hear him, but unless she was totally deaf, she had heard him fine. There hadn't been a single other competing sound in the room.
"Nevermind," He muttered, unwilling to repeat himself as he very carefully began packing his things. He left the unfinished drawing out, tearing it carefully from the seams of his sketchbook as he rolled his charcoals back in to their fabric case and closed his sketchbook over. He wasn't going to force her to converse with him, he wasn't that desperate for company. Plus, he'd had just about enough of her stiff silence and his dismal attempts to breach it. He suddenly despised his own curiosity.
Nate cleared all of his things away without lifting his head. His stool screeched against the floor as he pushed it out, shouldering his bag. He finally looked up at her again, reaching over to flick the loose leaf drawing so that it floated across the table and fluttered off the other end and on to the floor. "From me, to you." He said sarcastically, quirking his brows at her without explanation. "Name it whatever you want." He looked down to where it had landed just by her feet. "Bin it." With a dry smirk, he turned his back with a single lingering look and headed for the door without looking back.

09.xx.2024 Cordelia wasn’t sure why she watched him pack all of his belongings without moving an inch. Morbid curiosity that he would say something else maybe. The gruff nevermind in response to her question had clearly ruffled his feathers enough to warrant leaving the club room completely. She hadn’t anticipated that at all, her lack of social understanding and communication getting the better of her this time. In her own mind, her question was her way of continuing the conversation. He didn’t see it that way though, and somehow that angered him.
There were a million other things she could have been doing with her time other than watching him, like getting the next round of film going or checking to see if the last one had finished drying yet. But no, Cordelia stayed planted where she was, her only movement being a slight recoil when he ripped the sketch he had been working on out of his sketchbook and tossed it at her. The defensiveness in his voice continued as he gave her two options for it; naming it or throwing it out. She couldn’t very well toss out someone else’s art - that was sacrilege. Even if had produced far better drawings, this was still his work. She had no right to destroy it even with his permission.
Kneeling down to pluck the sheet of paper off of the ground, Cordelia stared at it in wonder. There were parts missing (or was that on purpose?), like the eyes, but it certainly had a striking resemblance to something she saw every day. Herself. She started putting the pieces together in her head; the insistence on naming the girl in the sketch and also for her own name. Was she supposed to be flattered or creeped out that he had been drawing a face similar to her own the whole time? “Cordelia…” she muttered as he began to head for the door, unsure if would hear her or not.

NATE HAD FIRMLY MADE UP HIS MIND ABOUT THE nameless girl, and he didn't even know her name. Though, he was notoriously quick to judge and easily offended. He'd taken her question as a dismissal, an avoidance of his very presence and that in itself was the worst thing she could have done to him. Though, for the most part, he preferred to blend in, Nate hated the idea of being purposefully ignored. Even if that wasn't the case, that was simply how he had interpreted the interaction.
Leaving the sketch was like the final nail in the coffin, and Nate felt very much like he could forget all about her as he turned his back. Alas, she had an impeccable eye for comedic timing as just as he was about to reach the door her soft voice carried its way across the echoing art room. His steps did not falter, but his shoulders tensed. It was almost as if he didn't hear her, but he certainly had and his face screwed up at the sound of it. She hadn't stuttered, and Nate wondered first if that was her name or she was naming the sketch separately. Either way, it was like extending a hook that caught his mouth and yanked him away from freedom.
When he reached the door, hand on the knob, Nate couldn't help but look back. His face could have been construed as angry, a slight scowl pulling down the corners of his mouth. His cheeks were a bit red and his eyes narrowed slightly, as if she'd personally insulted him. His mouth, however, did not cooperate with his face. "Cordelia...?" He echoed curiously, as if in question. But, Nate wasn't expecting an answer. The girl was a walking question mark and when he looked at her he wondered if it had taken a lot for her to admit something as simple as a name. "Like King Lear..."

09.xx.2024 The time it took Nathaniel to place his hand on the doorknob to when he turned around to face her again felt like ages – like it dragged on, decided that it had enough, and then for good measure, decided to do it all over again just to tease her. Cordelia was mentally kicking herself for speaking up now, and every second from when her name left her lips to when Nathaniel turned around and repeated it back to her, sounding foreign and angry when it came out of his mouth, was torturous. History of Magic classes were less painful, and that was saying something considering the curriculum had apparently been stuck on goblin wars for the last three centuries. The expectation the boy at the other end of the room probably had for her to say something else had her mouth flapped open like a goldfish trying to intake its food flakes. She knew she was ridiculous for taking so long just to say her name, but that didn’t mean he had to stop and question it.
Looking back down at the drawing before flicking her eyes back up to Nathaniel, Cordelia slowly nodded her head to affirm that her name was indeed the one both of them had just said. The unexpected additional question, or observation, from him of whether or not she was named from King Lear had her head spinning for a response. Feeling like she was obligated, she bit down on her lip. “Uhh…ye-yeah…my mu-mum says it’s her f-favorite…” Nathaniel didn’t need to know that her mum liked it so much that she also gave her the middle name of Regan, successfully awarding the Smith girl with the names of King Lear’s two youngest daughters. Cordelia knew the story all too well, and if there had been room for the eldest daughter’s name, Goneril, the Hufflepuff was sure that would have been tacked on as well. “Obsessed m-maybe…”

USUALLY NATE PREFERRED TO HIDE HIS MUGGLE roots. Distancing himself from anything that might link him back to his decidedly 'ordinary' birth. Or, his presumed birth. He hadn't the foggiest about the details, and neither did the orphanage. He had always just been... there. A figure filling in a gap. But, Cordelia had surprised him so much that he'd let slip. Revealing the fact that he knew about the obscure Shakespearean. It seemed like he was showing his hand, and his dislike of it was plain on his face.
"But... it's a tragedy." Nate says in confusion, proving once more that he knew more about muggle art than most wizards tended to, but he couldn't help himself. Nate never could stop himself from having an opinion, a typically opposing one, too. "Why would you mum name you after a princess that dies in the end?" And his eyes were narrowed, barely looking at Cordelia as he thought about it carefully. "It's a bit of an odd thing to be obsessed with." And suddenly he was judging a woman he didn't even know.

09.xx.2024 Cordelia knew that King Lear was a tragedy, she didn’t exactly need Nathanael telling her that. He was making quite clear his distaste towards her name too, and she started to shrink back into the room slowly, first placing down his sketch and then moving towards the table with her belongings on it. It was a slow walk backwards, but it was gaining enough space that she was sure she could leave the conversation entirely if he continued to bludgeon her with snide remarks about the reason her parents chose her name. Once again, she was relieved that he didn’t know her middle name also came from the story, because that could only make it worse.
“I don’t know…” she muttered quietly, not looking him in the eye as she did so. His eyes criticized; she could see it before he ever said anything, and it had been that way since he walked into the room. She didn’t like the way they looked at her and tried to, and, what she assumed, pick her apart. Not looking at him was her own way of quietly disengaging. It was a tactic that tended to work with anyone that wasn’t an authority figure or a pest or Lily, and employing it once again during this conversation would hopefully get him to leave. She had to open her mouth, after all. “She l-likes it, so I d-don’t…I-I don’t know,” Cordelia repeated. Did there have to be any more meaning to it than that?

NATE KNEW HOW TO BE MEAN, HE'D LEARNED from years of feeling so terribly alone. It had saved him a lot of heartache, he reckoned. But, he wasn't trying to be mean when he criticised the choices Cordelia's family made when they named her. He knew how to be mean, but Nate hadn't quite figured out how not to be honest, either. Especially when he found no reason not to be. He could lie, sure. But why, in this instance? It was the truth. But, by the looks of things, it had not landed easily. Cordelia looked more spooked than ever.
After a beat of silence, where Cordelia struggled to speech and backed away from him, Nate had time to feel something close to guilt. "Look," He sighed, rolling his eyes skyward at his own lack of game. "I didn't say it was ugly." Not that she'd said he had, but he hadn't looked pleased either. "I just said it was weird." And then he could have smacked himself, almost ducking out of the doorway and leaving her with that sour impression of him. He shouldn't care, but her silence was like a living breathing thing. She'd given him something when she'd told him her name. The way she did things, never speaking without thinking first. He liked that.
"I didn't mean to sound like a prat." He told her, his lips pulling in to a rueful smile as he reached behind him to grab the door knob again, in case he felt the overwhelming urge to say something insulting again. "I'm usually better at this." He said, narrowing his eyes. He hadn't prepared to interact with Cordelia and maybe, actually, like her. She was a Puff, but far less annoying. "Mostly because I don't really... talk to people unless I want to." He sighed, shaking his head slightly and pulling the door open to finally leave. "See you around, Princess Cordelia." And he let her see him roll his eyes before he ducked out and in to the dark hallway.
