now you see me.
IT WAS ODD TO SEE THE WOMAN SPEAK SO freely about how she stiffed people. Nate listened, rapt but acutely aware as he stayed in a stiff silence. She was talking about how to spot and track a thief, but why would she care? Unless, of course, they were stealing her handbag from right under her nose. After a second, Nate shook himself out of his unexpected haze of admiration and confusion, sniffing as he cuffed the end of his nose with his forefinger.
"What..." He began, derisive but only lightly so. "Are you my thieving mentor now, or something?" He tilted his head to one side, trying to figure out if she was making a joke out of him, or something as terribly insulting. She appeared as transparent as she wanted him to believe. Nate was suddenly very aware of the fact that she was better at him at this, and he could be getting stiffed as they spoke. "But, you know, while we're here..." He crossed his arms, casting a look around himself as locals milled past. "If you're loud and fun and drawing attention to yourself, won't they remember your face?" That was, as far as Nate was concerned, his biggest worry. He narrowed his eyes at her, sure he'd got her cinched.
