Riley could tell that Dom was disappointed by the lack of response on his part, and he was disappointed in himself for disappointing her. But he couldn’t talk to her about it. He couldn’t talk to anyone about it, not without revealing his suspicions that his family were involved in blood extremist politics. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to tell her, he just couldn’t. That would possibly endanger her too. “Of course I’ll write you.” he promised, putting a smile on his face. Even if it was somewhat forced.
Riley laughed and shook his head when she asked how his year was going and if he knew what he wanted to do. “I think I’m just gonna stick on the healer track. Try to train up at St. Mungos in the mental department and then see what I want to do from there.” he shrugged. He had thought about opening his own practice, but he also thought he needed professional training first. More than just what his books could afford him. “How’s the real world?” he asked in return.

Dom smiled when Riley said that he’d write her. ”Thanks Riley. Sorry I’m so pushy, I miss talking to you,” she admitted. It was more than that, since she was also disappointed that he wouldn’t talk to her but she wasn’t going to go into that. She was going to try and strengthen their friendship. Then again, maybe that would take longer than a single afternoon. It probably would, un fact.
At the sound of his real laugh, Dom’s face lit up. At least she hadn’t lost her best friend entirely. He didn’t answer about the year, instead focusing on what he wanted to do afterwards, but she’d take what she could get. “You’d do great as a healer Riley. Make sure you get all the training you can so you can help me when I get into scrapes,” she teased, chuckling at her own joke. Then she shrugged when he turned the question back on her. “It’s okay. I still don’t know what I want to do so that makes stuff a little rough.” She then laughed, ”I went on a date with Finn from the Arrows. And he challenged me to a blusher-hitting duel thing. It was fun.” There. That should add some lightheartedness to the conversation.

“Yeah I miss you too. A lot really.” he admitted, genuinely. It was entirely different this year. Riley didn’t have his best friend, nor did he have his girlfriend...well, ex girlfriend. He really only talked to Prissy and his sister, though he wasn’t very fond of his sister. He missed having Dom to talk to. She was the only person he had ever met in his whole life who truly understood every aspect of his personality and of who he was. And it was torture for him that he couldn’t really talk to her about this.
“You went on a date?” he asked. That was surprising enough. He hadn’t know Dom was ready to date again, he knew that she was working through her feelings on Ethan, but he figured that since she didn’t have to see him around the castle anymore maybe it was easier to move on. “Are you going to go out with him again?” Riley asked, fully intrigued.

Dom smiled when Riley said that he missed her too. "Well that's something, at least," she said softly. Sometimes Dom wondered if anyone thought about her, or if in leaving Hogwarts and not taking a job immediately she'd placed herself in the oblivion of unknown people. Then again, she didn't really let herself think of things like that most of the time. Dom preferred to focus on the happier things in life. "So should I come visit you more often, or are you going to get tired of me?" Dom teased, confident in his answer but asking all the same. For some reason, she needed reassurance right now.
At his question, Dom smiled and shrugged. "I got an owl over the summer about blind dates and I thought it would be fun. I'm not ... I'm just bored. I can't figure out what to do with myself, you know? I thought it would be fun and it was." Out of everyone she knew, Riley was the one person most likely to understand what she meant. She wasn't quite ready for a relationship, but a date that was all about getting to know someone new and having fun? Dom could do that. She shrugged, "I will if he asks. He was pretty fun. I was thinking about maybe asking him ... but I'm not sure if I want to," which was a strange thing in and of itself. Normally Dom knew exactly what she wanted, but right now she felt like she was in a void where she didn't know anything. She didn't know what she wanted to do with her life, who she wanted to spend time with or anything. Which was why being with Riley was nice. She knew she liked to be around him.

“Oh I’m sure I’ll be absolutely sick of you.” Riley teased in response. Of course he wouldn’t get tired of her, they had seen each other nearly every day when she was in school with him and he hadn’t got tired of her, he was sure a few Hogsmeade weekend visits wouldn’t drive him off the wall. Seeing her made him happy, and, when they weren’t talking about his love life, it made him forget about all of that and he was just able to exist with her friend. It was nice to have this distraction for a while. “But you should probably come by anyway.” he winked.
Dom explained that she had signed up to go on blind dates over the summer and Riley nodded, that made sense, he hadn’t thought his friend was ready to jump into dating. He had heard about the event but he hadn’t participated, obviously. Since he was in a relationship with Kinsey at the time. But he was proud of his friend for signing up. He was glad it was a good experience for her. “Why aren’t you sure?” he questioned, sipping his butterbeer.

Dom laughed when Riley said that he would definitely get sick of her. Like she'd believe that. Last year, and for several years before that, the two were extremely close. Granted, they were both close with others too, like she'd been close with Ethan and last year he'd definitely been close to Kinsey, but that was a part of life. They were secure enough with their friendship that they didn't mind the other spending time with other people. "Oh don't worry, I plan on being here all the time," she told him. Honestly, she just wanted to see her friends that were still in school. "So if you ever need me, I'll be here for you." Riley probably knew that without her saying so, but Anna wanted
Riley was curious when Dom said she wasn't sure. Of course he was! She just told him she had a bunch of fun on a date, but wasn't sure what to do now. "I'm just not sure if I'm ready? Or if he'll very much not be interested in anything else. I mean, wouldn't he come to me if he was interested?" Dom was fully aware of how un-Dom-like this sounded. She normally did whatever she wanted when and how she wanted, but right now she was obviously doubting herself and she didn't know why. With anyone else, Dom wouldn't have let that out, but this was Riley. She could tell him anything.

It was interesting seeing this shy and awkward part of Dom again, it was a side of her that Riley hadn’t seen in years. Dom had never been particularly graceful when it came to romance and relationships, who was though? Certainly not him. He accidently pushed kinsey into the lake the first time they kissed. And there was nothing graceful about that. “You could also go to him if you were interested.” he suggested with a small smirk. “Sometimes guys need a push.” he shrugged. He didn’t want Dom to do anything that she wouldn’t be comfortable doing, but he understood that sometimes it was hard to know that girls were thinking or if they were pushing it too far and it was nice to be approached. “Are you going to start dating again then? Like seriously?” he asked. He didn’t mean the one person, but just in general.

Riley was making good points, of course, but that didn't make it any easier for Dom to really understand herself or make a decision, which was more annoying than she would have thought. Dom hated not understanding herself and what she wanted. She was so used to following her every impulse and whim that not knowing was basically torture. She shrugged at his suggestion. "What if I don't know if I'm interested or not," she hedged. "I mean, I enjoyed being with him, but I'm not sure if I want more than friendship." Dom wasn't sure if she ever wanted more than friendship with anyone, to be totally honest. "And what if I just push him away?" She did know that she didn't want to be annoying. She wanted to make friends, good ones and hoped that Finn would want to be one. She shrugged again, "I don't know. I want to have fun and meet more people, but I don't know if I can get serious again." Part of it was that she missed Ethan still, but that wasn't everything. Dom was slowly coming to realize that she was scared of letting herself care for someone else because what would she do if they got ripped away from her too? Just like Ethan. She was a complicated mess, but hopefully it didn't show on the outside.

Dom suggested that she might not know whether she was actually interested or not and Riley nodded, that made sense, he thought. These sort of decisions shouldn’t be rushed into. “Well there’s no need to rush any of these things.” Riley insisted, he wished he could take his own advice on the subject but his fate was out of his hands. Dom still had power over hers, “Maybe you can just keep it casual until you decide? And there’s no need to jump into dating the first person you go out with, right?” okay he was a huge hypocrite. Not that Kinsey had been the first girl he went out with, nor had they started dating right away after they met, but he did feel like their relationship had been faster than others. “The just keep it all casual. Why not? You’re young! You have plenty of time to be making those decisions. Dating is supposed to be fun, right? Maybe just have fun.” Riley definitely wasn’t an expert on this subject, and his own love life gave him no room to talk, but he had wrote for the advice column of the school paper for a while and had gotten better at giving advice. Plus, he knew Dom and he wanted what was best for her.

It was more of a relief to Dom that Riley actually understood her than she wanted to admit. Granted, he was her closest friend and she wanted him to understand her, but Dom normally didn’t care what other people thought. She did what she wanted, when she wanted and had a blast doing so. But her feelings at the moment were so complex and almost foreign to her that a part of her she’d never paid attention to before wanted validation. She nodded when he told her that she didn’t need to rush into anything and that she could just keep things casual for the time being if she preferred. “Yeah, I think that’s what I’ll do. I mean, I’m pretty sure I want to get to know Finn better, but that doesn’t mean we have to be exclusive or anything, right? I can still have fun getting to know lots of people.” Dom nodded, feeling her confidence returning a bit as she answered him, and definitely relieved by that fact. While she knew she didn’t always have to be strong with Riley, she still had a hard time letting out that side of her that definitely wasn’t strong.
She quirked her head at him, thinking of something else she meant to ask him before they got sidetracked by both of their relationship status’. “So you have a bunch of new students at the school this year. How is that going? Do you know any of the transfers?” A part of Dom wished she was back at Hogwarts, which wasn’t an altogether uncommon feeling. She would have loved getting to know Americans. That might be part of the reason why she was considering working in Honeydukes for a bit. She wanted to get to know some of them. Still, she’d let Riley tell her what he thought first.

While Riley still felt like he should be the last one to give any sort of relationship advice, what he said seemed to help Dom, or at least, repeated what she seemed to be thinking about on her own already. “I think that’s a great idea. There’s no reason to rush anything.” he said again, almost repeating himself from what he had already said, but he felt it was worth stressing. He always thought he wouldn’t rush into anything with a potential romantic partner, but alas, his fate seemed to be out of his hands, and he almost wished that he had been even more serious about Kinsey when he had the chance. He wasn’t sure how he’d feel if he ever got the chance again, maybe he would try to rush things for the sake of making up time. But he didn’t want to bring any of that up with Dom, her situation was far different than his.
Their conversation over their meeting today seemed to be very heavy and he was glad when something was brought up which lightened the conversation a lot. She asked about how school was going with the new transfer students. “Honestly I haven’t bothered with most of them… I’ve been a bit distracted.” he admitted. He knew that there were new students in his own house, and he was even roommates with some of them. But he hadn’t tried to get to know any of the transfers. He felt a little bad about that, actually. “I really should. But everything seems to be working fine. It’s weird how crowded Hogwarts is. I’ve always kind of felt like it was full but now it’s crazy.” he admitted with a laugh. “Are you sad you missed out on that?” he asked.

Dom nodded when Riley agreed that she didn't need to rush. It was nice to hear him say that, since he knew her state of mind better than probably anyone else. Riley understood her more than most and what he thought of her mattered to Dom. She was glad that he didn't think that she was overreacting or moving too slow or whatever. She smiled, feeling a little more relaxed now than she expected to.
Her eyes widened when Riley said that he hadn't bothered with the transfers at all. "Seriously, Riley? You haven't gotten to know them?" She made a face at him, "Would you try to get to know some of them for me? Since I can't be there ... I want you to get to know just one or two of them and then tell me what they're like. Do you think you can do that?" She didn't want to make him feel bad or pressured to get out of his bubble, but maybe asking him to get to know a few of the Americans for her would help him make some more friends. He needed friends right now, needed to get out of his bubble and a way to relax and enjoy himself. Dom wasn't sure if it would work, but she was definitely willing to try. She wanted to try and help her friend somehow.

Dom gave him a hard time about not having gotten to know any of the new students and then asked if he would get to know them for her. Truthfully, Riley had almost no desire to get to know anyone knew. He didn’t want to make new friends, he didn’t feel like he needed any new friends. It didn’t matter to him, and he didn’t want to get to know and get attached to anyone who he wouldn’t ever see again, it was the same reason that he didn’t get to know any of the visiting students last year. He liked to observe them and he liked to learn about their culture differences, but he didn’t care to actually become friends with any of them. He might consider, if his own drama ever calmed down, trying to observe some of them or ask questions regarding their communication ideals. “Maybe, I don’t know. I don’t really want to waste my time.” he admitted. He didn’t want to upset Dom, and he knew she was saying these things to try to get him to socialize, but that didn’t mean he had to accept. He finished his butterbeer after he spoke.

The look on Riley’s face told Dom all she needed to know before he even said a word. He had no desire to get to know anyone in the school and she thought she knew why. Though she was certain she wouldn’t be able to get her friend to admit to it- she wasn’t even going to try- Riley was hiding from people. He didn’t want to make more friends and Dom suspected that it had everything to do with Kinsey. Her friend was hiding his true feelings from her more than even he suspected, she was sure. So when he said he didn’t want to waste her time, Dom wasn’t surprised. Still, she let her disappointment show. “Getting to know new people is rarely a waste of time,” she chided, “You never know what they have to offer.” Then she closed her eyes a second, forcing herself to stop telling him what to do. When Riley was in a mood like this, there wasn’t really anything Dom could do. She rose to her feet, forcing a smile and grabbing his arm to pull him along. “Let’s go to Zonko’s. You look like you could use a laugh and I heard they have a new item. Come on,” Dom started to pull Riley, not really giving him a chance to argue. She wanted to stop talking about such serious things and give Riley something to smile about. It didn’t seem like he had a lot of things like that right now. --- the end --- @riley
