timing: November 2024
Rain pelted the grimy windows of the Leaky Cauldron, but Lilith didn't mind. It was just background noise, well suited to the environment. After all, she was warmed by the fire, and by the tea she sipped as she turned the page of her book. She was back off to Egypt in a weeks time for another round of curse breaking expeditions. It was almost like a holiday, even if the start of November was rubbish timing.
Lilith leaned back in her chair, looking around the pub. It had filled up somewhat since she had last looked up after receiving her tea. Most of the patrons were chatting quietly to one another, appropriate behaviour for a Thursday afternoon. She suspected that in an hour or two, people would start to get rowdy. At that point, she would most certainly take her leave. No one had bothered her, and that was the way she liked it. She marked her place in her book and rose, stretching out her cramped limbs as she did so. Lilith sidled up to the bar and requested another pot of tea. The barmaid nodded, saying she would bring it over. Nodding, the blonde shuffled back to her chair by the fire and settled in to continue with another few chapters of New Theory of Numerology: Volume Four, which continually brought interesting ideas about arithmancy to light.
The barmaid approached her, and Lilith mumbled thanks. But no pot of tea was set down. She looked up, frowning. It wasn't the barmaid. It wasn't even someone she recognised.

Vik wandered the muggle streets in London, smiling as he watched the other people. It was dark, already night, and most people that were outside were probably headed home. The weather was miserable and rainy, which made people’s reactions to being outside a lot funnier than normal. Most people were fighting the wind and rain with umbrellas, rushing to and fro as they tried to get out of the rain as quickly as possible. Vik didn’t care about these kinds of things. If he got wet, who cared? He could dry off once he got home or if he decided to head to a wizard establishment he could dry himself then too. Ah, the comfort of magic. He absolutely loved it. After a while of wandering, he decided to make his way to the Leaky Cauldron. He probably wouldn’t run into anyone he knew there since he’d stayed away from the magical world the past few years, so he could do whatever he wanted, which was exactly the way he liked things. As he stepped inside, he saw that the place was actually pretty full. Most people were chatting away with some of their friends, which was great for them. Vik just had to decide whose party he was going to crash. Watching through the crowds, he spotted a blonde at the bar. She spoke to the barmaid and then proceeded to a seat by the fire, which looked really warm to VIk. She also appeared to be alone, a double bonus! Vik thought about getting a drink, but decided he wasn’t interested in anything yet. He shuffled through the crowd until he approached the woman. “Hey, do you mind if I sit here?” he asked, an easy smile on his face as he gestured to a chair also seated near the fire. It wasn’t directly beside hers, which was a good thing if she was the shy sort of girl. He didn’t want to make her anxious. “Looks like some heavy reading there. What is it?” Yeah, Vik wasn’t one for silence. He liked talking and getting to know people, whether they wanted him to or not.

Lilith mumbled her thanks to the barmaid, who said she would bring over her tea. However, no tea pot was placed in front of her and when she looked up, the person was not the barmaid, who was busying herself with another customer at the bar. Lilith frowned. Why did he want to sit here? She was perfectly fine herself. He was probably one of those blokes who told girls to smile more. But a quick sweep of the room told her this was the only chair left in the pub. She was saved from answering as another member of staff brought her tea over. "Thanks," mumbled Lilith, busying herself with fixing tea. She was starting to feel a bit uncomfortable with the man looming over her.
"Er well... alright then, go on," she said, not looking up and making sure she poured precisely the right amount of milk into her cup. Lilith hoped that he wouldn't be a talker, but was proven wrong almost immediately. She sighed, taking a tentative sip of her tea. Too hot. Naturally. She just didn't much want to answer. She placed her cup back on the saucer, before looking up. "New Theory of Numerology, volume four," she replied shortly. "It's very interesting, and useful for my work. I suppose you don't have to do research for... whatever it is you do?" said Lilith delicately.

The girl seemed a little uncomfortable, but Vik decided that was just because she wasn't expecting anyone to approach her. She definitely appeared to be enthralled in that book she had, but if she hadn't been up for interacting with people she would have gone home instead of coming here. At least, that's what he would have done.
She didn't say anything for a bit, since someone came over with tea for the woman. She busied herself with preparing her drink, but Vik waited patiently. He wasn't going to leave just because she was uncomfortable. No, he intended on trying to make a new acquaintance here and that required talking with her. He smiled when she said he could sit there. "Thank you," he found his seat and glanced over at her, waiting for her to answer her question.
His eyebrows lifted as she spoke, Numerology, huh? That meant she was a smart one. "What exactly do you do, if you don't mind me asking?" Vik threw out there. She couldn't say the book was useful in her line of work and not explain what that was. At least, not without knowing he was going to question her on it a bit. He grinned when she asked about his line of work. "I actually do a lot of research," Vik told her smoothly. "I deal with antiquities. Handling them, checking them for forgeries and that sort of thing. It's a hobby, but also something I really enjoy." Ha. He absolutely loved his cover job. Sure, he did what he was telling the girl, but it didn't pay enough to be his real job. Stealing the ancient items was much more fun than just making sure rich people bought authentic items.

It was not uncommon for most folk to give Lilith a wide berth. She exuded frostiness. This was the way Lilith preferred things. Quiet, uninterrupted. She didn't mind a bit of loneliness. After all, only one person had manage to crack her facade, and she was gone now. Gone forever. Lilith had to take a deep breath the quell the emotions that suddenly threatened to overwhelm her. While she offered the man the seat across from her, she hoped he wouldn't take it. She didn't want to talk. He was a talker. Lilith narrowed her eyes at her tea, irritated already.
Lilith explained her book, delicately inserting a diss into the end of her sentence. He didn't look much like the literate type. She sighed and carefully marked her page as he continued talking. She wasn't going to concentrate with him yapping about in her ear. She regretted telling him to sit. She should have said she was waiting for a friend. She should have said she was going home. She should have done a lot of things that she didn't and here she was in this situation. "I am a curse breaker for Gringotts," she said, meeting his eyes. Lilith was under the impression that men didn't think women could do adventurous jobs. He was likely one of those people.
When he told her about being an antiques dealer, she smirked. "Like, old chairs and that rubbish? You should see some of the ancient artefacts I uncover," said Lilith. When she thought of antiques she thought of her mum's old ebony wardrobe. That thing was likely as old as Merlin himself. "Do you have a shop then, or do you do it out of your home or something?"

Vik wasn't entirely sure if the girl wanted anyone talking to her, but he wasn't going to let that stop him. He wasn't very good at leaving people alone unless they came outright and asked him to. He hid a smile when she marked her page and closed her book. It was pretty clear she was annoyed, but that was fine with him, especially since she was resigning herself to talking with him. She wasn't asking him to leave. He lifted an impressed eyebrow when she said she was a curse breaker. "Oooh that's impressive," he answered, entirely serious but still smiling. He couldn't help it. "How long have you been doing that?"
He shrugged a little at her question, not put off by it at all. "Sometimes. I see all sorts of things, though I'd love to see your kind of artifacts if that's an invitation." There weren't a lot of people in the world that would appreciate ancient artifacts, but this girl was clearly one of them. He shook his head at her question. "No, I don't have a shop. It's not really an official business either. I help people who know about me, get spread around a little by word of mouth. Nothing too big." Oh, he loved conversations like this. People like her had no idea what he was capable of. Actually, there was only one person in the world who really knew what he was capable of, and that was Rai, his partner. She'd find this conversation hilarious, he knew.

Lilith eyed her companion critically. "Are you taking the mick?" she asked, wondering if he was actually impressed by her being a curse breaker or not. "Just because I'm a woman doesn't mean I can't have a proper job or get equal pay," she added swiftly, if not defensively. She took another long sip of her tea before responding, keeping the irritation in her voice to a minimum. "I've been a curse breaker since I graduated Hogwarts, so six years now," she said. It was incredible how quickly time flew. And now she had been roped into mentoring recent Hogwarts graduates. As if she was that old.
Lilith's boast about ancient artefacts and treasures went entirely amiss as the man seemed genuinely interested. Or at least, appeared to seem interested. She wasn't entirely sure if he was pulling her wand or the like. "What did you say your name was?" she asked abruptly. It wasn't often that she found someone who was persistent enough to continue speaking to her for long. After a moment, she softened. "Well, perhaps it is an invitation. If you're looking for a career change, fabulous treasures await you," said Lilith with a hint of a grin. When he told her about his methods she chewed on the inside of her cheek thoughtfully. "Something about who you know, rather than what you know," she mused. That sounded like the sort of thing that interested her. "So... you don't have an official shop. Or business. You just get your mates to ask you for old rubbish and collect it for them? Am I following?" she asked to clarify.

Vik shook his head, "No I'm serious," he insisted. "Believe me, I work with a woman and she demands equality as well. She's a great worker. I think it's cool that you're a curse breaker." Hopefully that would be enough to calm the young woman, who suddenly seemed very annoyed. "Nice that you were able to find the job for you right after leaving Hogwarts," Vik commented with a short nod. He certainly hadn't been able to do that. It took him ages to figure out what he really wanted to do, and it ended up being what he'd almost always done. How lame was that? He still loved it.
"I'm Vik," he answered at her rather abrupt question. He couldn't tell if she was still annoyed at him or if he was starting to get past her defenses, but Vik would give it a go for a few more minutes at least. If nothing else maybe he could learn a bit more about the treasures she gathered. He'd love to see some of those. He smiled when her demeanor changed slightly. He smirked, "Hmm, I'm not sure if I want a career change quite yet, but I think your treasures sound fascinating." He nodded as she said that what he did was more about who you know. He laughed a little as she continued, "Something like that, though most of my customers aren't my old mates. I used to work at a pawn shop and I'm willing to travel around to find what people want. They come to me asking me to find a specific thing, and I go around the country, maybe even several of them until I find what they've been looking for. It takes a specific amount of dedication, but I love seeing all the artifacts." Honestly, that was Vik's favorite thing about what he did. Seeing all the treasure. He didn't want to keep it, or need it, he just liked handling it.
