Today, Tobias was suffering from a severe case of boredom.
After completing his assigned homework and leisurely reading in record timing, his eyes were far too tired to read from his text books any longer. It was time for some much deserved fresh air - or else his eye balls would fall out of his head. Toby cruised over to the Great Hall for a quick snack, while there he made a point to shove a couple of plain crumpets in his front hoodie pocket....in anticipation of meeting his tentacled friend.
As Toby made his way across the Hogwarts grounds, the large branches of the willow trees creaked from a light breeze as they gracefully danced back and forth in a slow natural rhythm. His favorite spot was under the willow tree overlooking the lake. This was Toby's favorite place to get away from his rowdy classmates and enjoy time to himself. Unlike most teenagers, Toby enjoyed being alone, and pondering, about anything and everything. This was the perfect place to do just that.
The tree Toby favored most was surrounded by tall bushes and was in an area less traveled by students because it was rumored to be where the infamous giant squid, and other sketchy creatures, liked to frequent. Toby had always naturally been a bit too curious about animals, the squid specifically. He would frequently visit to throw them bread crust offerings. The Ravenclaw was fully aware that bread wasn't an ideal diet for a magical creature, but it was rumored to be what students in the past successfully fed him. And the squid liked carbohydrates, so he wasn't going to deprive it of what made it happy.
This afternoon he planned on surprising his nautical mate with crumpets for the first time ever. They were his most favored breakfast item, so surely he'd enjoy it too, right?
Toby sat with his back up against his favorite willow tree closest to the sparkling waters edge. The Ravenclaw ripped off a couple of pieces of the crumpet and tossed it as far as he could. Admittedly, they were weak throws his sister Claudia would chuckle over, revoking his man card, yet again. His eyes intently scanned the surface of the water, searching for any movement, warm brown eyes widening to saucers as something breached water, yanking the pieces of crumpet down aggressively. The squid apparently loved crumpets. Instinctively he got on his hands and knees, right at the waters edge and threw more, completely mesmerized by the sight.

THE BOOK WAS JUST AS GRAND ON THE INSIDE as it was on the outside. Ashley had always been better at giving gifts than Eli. She was so thoughtful without even realising it. This was just another thing Eli had noted as he cracked the spine of the book, and had found the elusive chapter on Hogwarts Giant Squid. This had drawn him down to the lakes edge, a half eaten sandwich in one hand, the book balanced in the other.
"'Few unfortunate individuals have reported sighting it on the... North side of the Lake...'" Eli recited, licking a bread crumb off his bottom lip as he scuffed his feet along the grass. He was supposed to be doing homework, that much was true. And he had indeed sat down, a piece of parchment laid out before him. Fresh ink gleaming on the end of her brand new quill. But, then he'd looked at all the potion ingredients, the book turning to mush before his very eyes. Ashley had also been better at helping him focus.
It just so happened that the stillness of the lake was extremely peaceful for Eli. And finding the chapter on the elusive creatures dwelling in it proved how important it was that he go have another look for himself. And he was nose deep, chewing a mouthful of tomato and cheese when he heard the splash of something hitting the water.
Looking up, Eli used one hand to slowly close his book, his brows pulling together. Someone was crouched by the lakes edge, tossing something in to the water. Was it bread? He wasn't sure. Eli wandered closer. "Are you feeding the grindylows?" Eli called out curiously, rocking on his heels. He didn't want to scare the guy right in to the water. "I heard they're kinda fussy." Immediately, Eli thought back to the time he'd been tossing rocks in to the river. Earning him a stone to the face and burst nose. Good times...

Toby had been so consumed in thought, entranced fully by whatever creature was eating the crumbs, that he hadn't heard anyone approach him from behind. The boys voice had ripped him out of his train of thought, causing him to let out a tiny comical shriek, instantly humiliated by the random outburst. His brown eyes widened and he felt himself titter dangerously close to the water's edge, nearly losing his footing as his arms flailed crazily for a moment to catch himself. "Fuck that was close." He finally let out a sigh of relief, followed with a laugh. Tobias didn't want to swim in the lake, it wasn't only a forbidden activity, but the creatures lurking in the abyss awaiting one wrong move would love to eat them for lunch. There were better ways to pass time, such as reading, eating, and trying not to die.
The boy seemed friendly. American. Definitely an Ilvermony student. Toby tried to wipe the redness from his face, just relieved he didn't fall in the lake in front of someone he didn't know. That would have been painfully embarrassing. At that point he would have just hoped the Merpeople would take him in and make him their own. But that was unlikely. Not even Merpeople would want him.
Toby nodded in agreement about the grindylows. "Probably. I always come here in search of the giant squid, but see it rarely. He's a bit shy." he said with a shrug, tossing another piece of crumpet onto the surface of the water and watching it get dragged under. "Those stupid grindylows are vicious, mate. Had one grab my sister by the ankle her first year." Toby shared, before continuing, "They're nasty lil--" Immediately after calling them 'nasty' a rock game shooting out of the water, aiming for the other boy, as if they remembered him. Then another shot out of the water, hitting Toby in the leg. "What the-" he gaped, eyes brows furrowing at the center of his forehead in surprise, maybe even a bit of offense, while pushing his glasses to the bridge of his nose with a single pointer finger. He'd never had a rock thrown at him before. How rude.

ELI WAS SLOWLY EDGING HIS WAY CLOSER TO the boy by the lake. That yearning to be where he was, leaning so close to the water that he could see his own reflection. A far better position to be in than sitting with a book in his hand. He brightened at the mention of the giant squid.
"The Giant Squid?" Eli stressed, setting his book on the grass carefully before he marched closer. "You know, I was just reading about it." He explained, a grin splitting his face in two. "I'd love to see it for myself." His silhouette shivered with enthusiasm as he dropped to the dirt near the boy, already craning his neck to watch as he dropped another piece of crumpet in to the water.
"Yeah, one of them burst my nose-" Eli muttered, his words cut off in favour of a gasp when a rock sailed toward them. Eli immediately dropped in to the grass and silt, cheek pressed tight as he dodged just as the other boy earned a knock to the leg. "Dude, are you alright?" He asked, sitting up on his forearms just in time to see a stone skim so close he felt the air disturb the fine peach fuzz on his cheeks, going cross eye as he missed him by a bare half inch. "Shit!" He cursed, throwing himself backwards.
"I think they remember me!" Eli called, flat on his back as he waited for them to get bored. But, his shoulders were already shaking, hands quivering where they lay on his belly as it flexed with laughter. "Jeez, they really are something..." He said between guffaws, wiping a hand across his face as he risked sitting up slightly. "I'm Eli, by-the-way." He lifted a hand for a short, lazy wave before he flopped back down. Just to be safe.

Toby already knew by the kids expression and demeanor as soon as he mentioned reading about the giant squid that he was going to like this kid. It instantly ignited the excitement inside of him, he fed off that kind of energy! Not many kids their age really wanted to geek out about magical creatures, insects, and 'weird' things of that nature.
He was going to ask him if he wanted to check out the other side of the lake for any activity when random rocks came flying at them from the water. Toby dropped down instantly after the other boy did, somewhat surprising himself with the quick reflexes. Elijah mentioned something about the grindylows probably remembering him after bursting his nose and he cocked his head to the side, a very puzzled look crossing his features. "Waaait. They've already burst your nose?" he asked him, actually quite amused by the fact. "We gotta show 'em who's boss, mate." Toby snorted, removing his wand from his pocket with a jestful smirk.
"I'm Toby" he waved awkwardly back with a friendly smile, still propped on his elbows. Hell, from afar they probably appeared to be enjoying a luxurious sun bath, but it wasn't that quite leisurely, since they were under attack. Several rocks showered down one by one, one smacking into Tobys glasses, cracking the right lense. It caused him to go cross eyed momentarily. "Oh, for fucks sake." he grumbled, sitting up on his knees, irritated. With a fluid swish and a flick of his wand, he bellowed, "Wingardium Leviosa" A large pile of rocks hovered until he flicked once more and dropped them into the lake where the rocks were spurting from with a large splash. He smiled, satisfied. Not even thinking about what the grindylows would do to retaliate because it all happened so fast. He turned to Elijah curiously, "I have to ask....did you piss them off or are they just jerks?"

SHRUGGING EASILY, ELI DIDN'T THINK MUCH OF his previous encounter with the grindylow's. They were notorious for their nasty attitudes, and in all honesty, he was the one throwing the rocks to begin with. But, the other kid was so enthused by the mere idea that Eli was almost... smug. "Yeah..." He said with a lazy smile, reaching up to rub at his nose, the ghost of a picked scab lingering across the bridge. "But, it was kind of my fault."
Sitting up slightly, though, Eli was intrigued to see what he would do next. Except, he was less enthused about whipping out his wand. He really was terrible at charms. He retrieved it from his pocket anyways, awkwardly holding it in his hands as he waited for some kind of cue. Quickly, however, Eli had to duck once again as a rock ruffled his hair and promptly shattered Toby's glasses. "Dude, are you okay?!" Eli asked, a wrinkle of concern forming between his brows as he scooted closed but also held up his hands in defence against another attack.
As it turned out, Toby was much more prepared this time around as he lifted his wand and proudly and shot off a charm that levitated a dangerous amount of rocks in to the air. "M-maybe we shouldn't-!" Eli warned cautiously, but the rocks were already raining down on their opponents. Eli was struck dumb with a mixture of admiration and concern for the nasty little creatures. "I don't know, but I think you might have just beat me on their most wanted list, bro..." It was like he could see the water tremble with fury at the retaliation. "We should... yeah, maybe we should go." Eli said, unable to help his snort as he slowly backed away from the lake's edge.
One by one, Eli watched as the water rippled with activity. All across the surface, almost exactly where each of Toby's rocks landed on the surface. As if the lake was rejecting its gift. Eli knew better. He knew that soon enough those rocks would be firing their way out of the water with a furious intent. "Run!" He yelled, turning on his heels and fleeing in to the surrounding woods. He skidded behind a tree just as a rock split its bark exactly where Eli's head would have been had he not ducked out of sight. His head swivelled as he tried to find Toby, concerned his new friend hadn't found cover.

Toby definity hadn't thought this one through. Which was somewhat surprising considering he was normally a decent problem solver and wasn't very impulsive, but this time he kind of felt attacked. He never had a creature shatter his glasses! And his new friend Eli mentioned a nasty run in with the buggers busting his nose, so they kind of had it coming. The Ravenclaw nodded his head in almost comical terror filled agreement to Elis statement about him being on the grindylows most wanted list. All he could do was watch, gaping with a stupid look on his face through cracked lenses...
The water started to furiously rumble as the rocks hit the surface. Tobys eyes widened, instantly regretting that decision...he slowly put his wand back in his pocket, grumbling. "That was a bad idea. That was a very, very bad idea. I definitely shouldn't have done that." he was caught in sudden nervous laughter. As Eli backed up away from the water, warning him that they should leave, he promptly followed and took cover beside a tree as rocks started to rain from the air. They were suddenly caught in World War 3 crossfire. Rocks pelted against the trees, splintered branches, and sent dirt flying...and all Toby could do was laugh with a comical expression which was a mixture of nervousness and excitement. This would be something he couldn't wait to tell Kinsey - it was beyond stupid.
Oddly enough, this kind of behavior gave him some sort of sick thrill he felt the need to immediately apologize for. He turned to Eli, the rocks still flying, but at more random pace. "Ugh, I'm soo sorry. I swear I don't usually go around picking on animals, that would be messed up...but I dunno...grindylows mate." he told him, gaping in disbelief. Toby had the dreaded feeling of needing to apologize for ruining the vibe of Elis reading environment. It was usually a great place to read. Toby hoped the grindylows wouldn't notice him the next time he decided to hang out at the lake.. Why were they so moody this year?! Well, probably too many kids provoking them..

TAKING SHELTER BEHIND A TREE, ELI COULD ONLY hear what carnage took place around him. Rocks flying, the rippling and splashing of water. He truly had not expected this turn of events when he had turned up at the lake. And he certainly hadn't expected to drag someone along with him. Strangely, this was not entirely unlike Eli. He often found himself in odd, mildly dangerous situations. And usually around animals. It was his complete lack of caution and his inability to think before he acted.
Eli couldn't help the wild laughter that rippled from between his pursed lips as he looked at Toby, finally finding him as he slid in to the stop beside him, the sound of rocks cracking bark making Eli jump every few seconds. Thankfully, Toby seemed to find it funny too, so Eli did not try to hide his laughter as he eventually threw back his head and whooped in to the canopy above them. He loved that feeling, where his blood felt on fire and his head was spinning dizzily. Adrenaline.
"Don't be sorry," Eli snickered, slumping down in to the dirt as he panted happily, like an overexerted dog. "It's not your fault, dude." He shook his head and reached out a hand, slapping his friend on the shoulder and shaking him exuberantly before letting go. "Nobody can predict those grindylows." In fact, if anything, it was Eli's fault. He knew exactly what they were like and he had not warned Toby in time. Eli did not feel guilty, though a little crinkle did form between his brows when he spied the cracked lens of Toby's glasses.
"Can you fix that?" He asked, tongue dashing out over his bottom lip as he gestured to the crack with a limp wrist, dropping it back in the dirt between his lax legs as he leaned back against the trunk. He hoped Toby was capable of handling his business because Eli did not have his wand and he wasn't sure he knew the charm, even if he did have it.

Slowly, the rocks stopped torpedoing through the sky above. Toby propped himself on the back of his elbows, awaiting his next move, he couldn't afford acting so impulsive again.
His new friend assured him not to feel sorry with a slap on the back, reminding him that those grindylows had unpredictable tempers. Thank Merlin, Eli wasn't judging him like he had a feeling he would. That was a relief. He could tell that the Puff sitting before him was someone he'd definitely hang around, so he was glad that he dismissed the stunt easily. At least Toby knew better for next time... Don't mess with the grindylows. He never had a problem with them in the past, but today he effortlessly made it to the top of their hit list after that last stunt. The brightside? He had something exciting to update in his journal of encountered creatures, so that was cool. Grindylows hadn’t really been considered much of a discovery until todays encounter, but he’d take any excuse for some action, or a new log in his discoveries. The only casualty being his glasses this time.
When Eli had asked about his shattered glasses, he shrugged nonchalantly. "Oh, yeah, that's nothin', mate." he stated confidently with a laugh, swatting any concern away. If there was one thing he was good at, it wasn't sports or flirting, but luckily, Toby had a knack for charms. It wouldn’t be the first time he had to use the handy incantation for himself or a friend. Removing his wand from his pocket, following with ripping his spectacles off of his face. Sighing, he gave the cracked lenses a comical cross eyed stare, a simple swish and flick of his wand, “Oculus Reparo” Toby stated firmly. With a blink of an eye, the lenses were repaired back to perfection.
Wordlessly, he gave a satisfied nod before putting them back on his face. Brushing off a bit of dirt from his pants, he pushed himself off of the ground slowly, peering around cautiously for any remaining soaring rocks in the sky. "You wanna go look for the squid?" Toby inquired, there was a bit of reservation behind his voice, like he was trying to hold back his excitement. Magical creatures and things of that nature always gave him the ultimate nergasm, he was constantly holding back so that his peers wouldn't think that he was too weird. "--Since the grindylows are wreaking havoc on this side of the lake, I have a feeling like the squid is lurking out over there...minding his own business.." he mused, gesturing toward the opposite side of the lake, where the waters surface sparkled and shimmered against sunlight.

ELI WAS BEGINNING TO THINK THAT HOGWARTS was filled with Charms whizz kids as he watched Toby brandish his wand and fix his cracked glasses in a matter of seconds. He gave the kid a short round of applause, his lips pulled down at the corners in a look of impressed admiration as he thought about how screwed they'd have been if Toby was as good at Charms as Eli was.
"Hell yeah," Eli said as Toby popped his glasses back on and asked if he'd like to look for the Giant Squid. He stood up, peeking behind their hiding spot before crouching and shimmying back towards the water edge. "Just gotta grab my book," He whispered back at his new friend, mildly concerned that the Grindylow's might here and return with a vengeance. He'd set it down a little ways away from the scene of the crime and managed to snatch it up and run back without incident.
"All set," He said smugly, waving the book around triumphantly before looking over his shoulder, just in case. Not that he was afraid or anything. "Lead the way," He told Toby, opening his book up where he'd cornered the section for The Giant Squid. "If I were the Giant Squid, I'd be avoiding the Grindylow's too," He muttered, quirking his brows as he looking down at the aged parchment and its printed facts. "Imagine having them as roommates..." He lifted his head and tilted it curiously, tapping the pages corner as he corrected himself, "Or would they be called Lake-Mates?"

Toby watched as Eli crouched down to grab his book from the ground by the lakes edge, before they set off on the opposite side of the lake in search of the giant squid. Eli mentioned that the grindylows would be terrible roommates and he let out an amused chuckle. This kid was funny. Toby nodded his head in agreement, "Ohh, yeah, probably even worse upstairs neighbors, eh. Poundin' around at all hours of the night with rollerskates on their feet...if they had feet." he mused jokingly, enjoying the sudden mental image.
The Ravenclaw pointed to the other side of the lake, where there was a cluster of willow trees, "Sometimes the squid will poke it's head and tentacles above the water for snacks -- he likes bread." he shared with Eli with a dorky drone to his voice. His new friend Eli seemed to be just as intrigued by the creature as he was. That was cool. Usually people didn't get as excited for animals as he did and often teased him about it. This squid was old news, but not to his American friend, so he had someone just as eager as him to seek it out. Toby gestured to the book under Elis arm curiously, the Ravenclaw in him always interested in what anyone was reading. Even if it was as simple as a stupid Witch Weekly magazine, at least they were reading. "What're you readin' mate?" Toby inquired interested, as they trekked their way to the other side of the lake at a decent pace, keeping an eye out for the grindylows.

ELI COULDN'T HELP BUT LAUGH AS HE PICTURED a horde of rollerblading grindylows, wiggling his arms and fingers as he piped in, "On their tentacles." He snickered at the mere idea, shaking his head as he sighed, "That'd make for a killer boggart." Though he couldn't imagine very many people were deathly afraid of Grindylow's, not like they were native to 'under your bed'. But, he thought quietly that it wouldn't be too much of a stretch. They really were mean.
"Carb-loading," Eli muttered, a smile on his face as he strained to see the copse of trees Toby was pointing out, ever curious. This was exactly the kind of nerd chatter he loved. The kind he actually understood. It felt good to finally have someone to share his enthusiasm with. "Does he have a name?" He mused, striding alongside Toby as they made their way around the lake. "Maybe we should name him anyway..." He began thinking of nicknames, thumb tapping against his book, which he held tucked under his armpit.
As if drawn by his tick, Eli looked to where Toby gestured. "Oh!" He blurted, pulling it out and gently rubbing the hard, expensive front cover. "It's a special addition book about fascinating creatures around the world." Eli explained, cracking the spine to where he'd spotted the chapter on the Great Squid. "Got it for my birthday." He couldn't help the small, secret smile on his face when he thought about how Ashley had given him it. She always knew exactly what to give him. Like she was tuned in to his mind, or something.
"Wanna see?" He offered it over to Toby after a minute, his thumb caught in the chapter about the Great Squid. "It's pretty cool, there's illustrations and everything."

"That would make an excellent boggart." Toby agreed with a snort, quite tickled by the mental image it provided. "After today, I may have to use that one for practice.." he joked. Hopefully grindylows wouldn't be added to his list of fears, but who knows, life was weird sometimes.
Toby laughed when the Puff asked if the squid had a name. He scratched his chin, pushing his glasses to the bridge of his nose as he appeared to think thoughtfully about his question. "Nope, can't say they have a name.." he said shaking his head and turning toward the other boy, "But he certainly should... Any ideas?" Toby asked conversationally, open to any suggestions. He was terrible at naming things. He mentally brainstormed names as they made their way around the curve of the lake, getting further and further away from those pesky grindylows.
As Eli extended the book toward him, he took it with interest, holding the book where he had it saved last. The Giant Squid. His eyebrows quirked upwards with interest as his warm brown eyes scanned the page, taking in the illustration first. "That's wicked, mate." he praised, nodding his head up and down as he acknowledged the book cover. "Haven't seen that one yet, will gotta check it out..." Toby mused, quite interested by the books contents as he lightly thumbed through it for a moment. Hippogriffs, basilisk, giant spiders, were a few to catch his eye but he was just looking at the pictures for now since he was walking around the lake and wouldn't want to fall in.
Extending the book back to his friend with a courteous nod, "What's your favorite animal?" The Ravenclaw asked with interest. This kid already seemed to get him, so he didn't really think that question wouldn't really be out of the ordinary for his new friend. It was actually a pretty frequent question from Toby to his peer, since everyone should have a favorite animal. Magical and Non Magical. And if they didn't, at least now they'd put some thought into it.

ELI LAUGHED ALONG WITH TOBY, AMUSED BY THE idea of turning up to Defence Against the Dark Arts and turning a boggart in to a rollarblading Giant Squid. "Make sure I'm there then, man." He retorted, shaking his head with a chuckle. He was quickly realising that he liked Toby. He was funny and he didn't judge him for being knocked down by the grindylow's, which made him golden in Eli's book.
Carefully, Eli considered a list of appropriate names for the mysterious creature. "I feel like we gotta see it first..." Eli said thoughtfully, scratching at the neck of his shirt absently before remembering something. "Oh, though one time I watched this no-maj movie," The Fleming's didn't watch a lot of no-maj TV, but Eli remembered a few select times when his mother's love for old movies got the better of her. "It had like... a talking sponge or something and in it," Eli turned to Toby like he wouldn't believe it. "And in it there was a squid called... like, Squidward." Eli snorted through his nose and shook his head.
Passing the book over, Eli was eager to show it off. He hadn't really had the opportunity to share it with anybody yet. Given the fact that for the first few weeks after he'd been given it, he hid it in a box under his bed. It reminded him too much of Ashley. "Yeah, it's awesome." Eli agreed enthusiastically, leaning in close so they could share. "I think it's a special edition or something." He said, knowing already that it had probably been difficult for Ashley to find. "But, if you can't find it you can borrow mine sometime." Shrugging easily, Eli leaned back and allowed Toby a moment to thumb through it alone.
He took the book back when Toby offered it, pressing it under his arm as he blew out a long breath. "Jeez, what day is it today?" He joked, always finding it difficult to chose a particular animal. "I guess I'd love to work with dragons, someday?" He said, scratching behind his ear as he thought. "But honestly, I love 'em all." He had a never ending appetite for strange and wonderful creatures. "Even the grindylows." In spite of the fact that they had very little time for him. "But... I've always wanted a Kneazle... like as a pet?" Turning his head he looked at Toby. "What about you?"

Toby listened as Eli explained the 'talking sponge' cartoon. His sisters used to always watch it and he'd get sucked into it, but it was admittedly very entertaining. "Ohh, Spongebob, eh? That is a classic." Toby nodded with an amused interest, quite sure that was it. Cocking his head to the side with a laugh, Toby gave a satisfied smile. "Squidward would be a good one!" Toby encouraged with a firm nod, quite liking that name a bit. Spongebob was a legend.
His new friend offered for him to borrow the book if he couldn't find one himself and he found himself slightly taken aback by his friends generosity. Eli was so kind he wasn't used to people being so friendly at Hogwarts. Well, he was a Hufflepuff, but still. One thing that Toby quickly caught onto was that Americans were very, very, friendly. It wasn't a bad thing, he just wasn't quite used to it yet. Especially with how the girls constantly wanted hugs. Not that Toby was complaining, but that must have been some sort of American thing to compulsively hug between every class. Hugs were cool though. It was when they told him to 'keep talking' for his accent that creeped him out.
When Eli asked what day it was after he asked him what his favorite animal was, Toby almost thought about the answer, but then he realized the joke. He snorted. They were definitely going to get along swimmingly. Toby had a friend who could talk about animals easily without getting weird. That was cool. "Dragons are wicked, mate. Have you ever encountered one or anything?" Toby asked, curious about his new friend. " My mum has a kneazle, they're cool, just a bit moody if they aren't around their favorite person. Really cuddly." He practically gushed at the last part. Eli asked him what his favorite animal was in return and he had to think a moment. "Ooh, it's a hard one. Probably dogs, non magical...and unicorns, magical. This week at least. Then, there's categories too." Toby joked with a laugh, he could relate on the everchanging favorite animal dilemma. That only made sense, people and their moods were always changing. Any other animal freak would get that. He had a feeling like Eli would be one of his people when it came to that.
