@kinsey | Note: this be a starter post lmao |
Toby was on a mission. It wasn't often that he was openly excited about something, but today, he had a pretty good reason. He was pretty sure he saw a unicorn at the Forbidden Forests edge while he was in the Divination tower.. Luckily for him, he had his glasses on at the time, so he was confident in what he saw, even if it was just a quick glimpse of shimmering silver from a distance. So, Toby did what any animal freak would do... He wanted to investigate, but he knew that he needed to do it right. Unicorns didn't just allow humans to approach them, and they were typically skittish around males. Which was why he needed to recruit a 'calming female energy' for the task. His sisters would just laugh at him, or try to scare the unicorn away to piss him off once they got there, so he knew better than to ask them for any assistance. Kinsey was his first option, anyways, and she didn't usually take ~much bribing.
Toby waited outside of the History of Magic classroom impatiently, where Kinsey was still held up in in class. He knew that they would be out any second, so he was standing close to the door in hopes that she would see him while exiting the classroom. Hogwarts was so crowded nowadays it was easy to miss a face, especially one that typically tried to blend in and not be noticed. Toby didn't usually wait for Kinsey after class because seventh year students had drastically contrasting schedules, but since it was the last class of the day, and he had an actual reason, he waited with too-happy of a look on his face. Something was up. Finally the door flung open, and students started flooding out of the door.

Kinsey wasn't entirely sure why she was still taking History of Magic in her seventh year at Hogwarts, but here she was. Sitting in the class, listening to the ghost professor drone on and on. Granted, she did actually like the subject, just not the way he taught it. She learned way back in first year that the best way to fully appreciate the History of Magic was to ignore Professor Binns entirely. It was much better to spend that class period reading about whatever subject he was supposed to be teaching. First of all, she learned much more that way. Secondly, it was more interesting reading about it than listening to his monotone voice. Also, it was easier to keep her thoughts and worries under control when she refused to let herself think. Reading was a perfect way to control her thoughts. She jumped a little when the bell rang and started putting her book and parchment away- she took notes while she read, of course. Most of the rest of the class was gone by the time she stood up from her seat, but that was fine. There wasn't really anyone there that Kinsey really wanted to talk to anyway. She made her way through the door, glad to have avoided the main rush when she spotted Toby. Instantly, Kinsey started to smile. Her life might have turned into crap over the past few months with everything that happened with Dustin and Riley, but Toby was still there for her and she was glad to have his friendship. She practically skipped over to him, excited to learn what had him so happy. "Soooo ... what brings you here oh friend of mine?" she teased as she reached Toby. She had a feeling they were about to do something fun and was all ready for that. tobias charles watkins

@kinsey | Note: i have no self control |
It seemed like an eternity until Kinsey walked through the doorway. Tony ambushed her instantly, "Oh, my f*ckin' God! I am trying not to freak out. I'm so excited." he breathed in excitedly while flailing his hands in the air in greeting. Kinsey skipped toward him, closing the distance, and he waggled his eyebrows with a cheesy grin. Maybe he wasn't really kidding about this excitement....because he was ~electrified.
Toby peered through the lens of his glasses to interrogate the girl, offering to hold any loose books for her to lighten the load. "Are you doing anything right now?--" He blinked, not waiting for an answer. "--Ohh, yeah! Excellent!" There was no time to wait. " I need to ask a very important favor of you...and you can't say no or I may wallow in misery for all of eternity." The eagle stood beside her with a comically serious expression, his warm brown eyes, large orbs. Manic. Who knew someone would be so excited about a creature in the woods? But it wasn't every day you saw a unicorn. Hell, he'd probably enter the Forbidden Forest if the creature were in direct view without thinking twice about it.
He inched toward the direction of the downward staircases, gesturing her with a whip of the head. Toby felt like a golden retriever puppy ready to be let outside.

Kinsey couldn't help but laugh as Toby rushed her, obviously over-excited about something. "What's going on?" she tried to ask, but she wasn't sure if he heard her in the loud hallway. He was offering to help with her books and Kinsey gave him the History of Magic one in her hands. She laughed as he asked a question and continued on without giving her a chance to answer. "For all eternity, huh? Well this seems important, I guess," Kinsey teased. She loved his part of her friend, how he'd randomly get so pumped up about some random thing. "What do you need?" She was sure that her answer would be yes, whatever it was. Toby was harmless, a rule-follower much like herself. That was part of the reason why the two got along so well. He started inching away, hinting that they needed to go downstairs. Kinsey shrugged and followed him. Whatever was going on would definitely be fun and she was excited to see what had her friend like this. "Come on Toby, what's going on?" she asked, her tone slightly whiny, but a wide smile on her face. He was so distracted right now, it was comical. "You are going to tell me, right?"tobias charles watkins

Toby heard the 'what's going on', but it was too late, he was already onto the next thought. They walked side by side, her book was tucked under his arm, "If you don't do it I don't think we could be friends anymore..." he lied, trying to upkeep a very serious expression and failing miserably as they stepped down onto the revolving staircase. "Not really - I'm kidding - you're my favorite and you know it." Toby reassured with a solid nod and eager smile. The comment wasn't meant to be taken flirty, but an outsider could easily take a comment like that the wrong way. They were beyond that awkwardness. Years of friendship had formed a bond where you couldn't really get awkward anymore, unless when people said Toby had a 'thing' for Kinsey. At this point he saw her like a forth sister to him, so it was a bit cringe-y to him. Though he was fully aware that she was gorgeous.
"Yes, I will tell you, but you're going to think I'm completely off my rocker, mate." Toby warned, eye brows meeting at the center of his forehead animatedly and scrunching his nose, "I was in the Divination tower, less than ten minutes ago, and there was a unicorn sitting at the edge of the forest. I need you to be unicorn bait because I know it won't let me approach it without a female in my presence and I have never seen a unicorn in person and I will die if I don't today." his words spilled from his mouth, unable to get them out fast enough. Someone was dramatic. "--PLEASE." Toby begged, tugging on her arm gently, more in a joking fashion, as they reached the ground floor. "I will do anything. I will be forever at your disposal. Actually, no, I take that back. That last part is a lie but you get it." be peered through his glasses earnestly at the last comment.

Kinsey rolled her eyes as Toby threatened to not be her friend anymore. Honestly, that was an empty threat and they both knew it. They were friends, basically family, and he wasn't going to ditch her because she didn't want to do something he wanted. Then again, the argument was pointless. She would go with him. Whatever he was so excited about was bound to be some sort of fun and she also didn't want to disappoint him. She smiled and shrugged one shoulder at him as they continued down the staircases. "I know. Can't help it, I'm just that good." Kinsey laughed, "Besides, if you didn't have me, who would you go to for all this sort of stuff?" She didn't even know what "sort of stuff" was going on, and she was still coming. Most people would wait for an explanation before coming along. Toby finally agreed to tell her what was going on and Kinsey looked over at him, lifting an eyebrow. "I already know you're off your rocker, so it's nothing new," she teased, waiting for him to explain himself. He started on about being in the Divination tower and looking out the window, seeing a unicorn and a slow smile covered Kinsey's face as she waited for him to finish his story. She knew what he wanted before he got close to finishing. "Tobias Watkins," Kinsey's tone started out reproachful, but it didn't stay that way for long. "In what world would I ever say no to seeing a unicorn?! I may not be as into Magical Creatures as you, but come on! I'm not even upset that you just want to use me because I'm a girl." She paused, narrowing her eyes a little at him, even though she was still smiling. "You will owe me though, since you only invited me because I'm a girl. There's no getting out of that one, my friend. If you invited me because you thought I'd like to see it you'd owe me nothing, but as it is ... you owe me." Kinsey nodded firmly, as though that sealed the deal. They were finally at the bottom of the stairs now, making their way outside. "Now where did you see the unicorn?" Kinsey asked, looking towards the Forbidden Forest, but not seeing anything. Maybe she wasn't looking in the right place. tobias charles watkins

@kinsey | Note: just realize i was tagging ashley the entire time wtf sorry lmao |
Kinsey was giving him a bit of lip for being so blatant about his intentions with only using her because she was a female. Okay, maybe it was true. He didn't have many females whom he could just uproot from class and force them to hunt down unicorns without them thinking he was a complete weirdo. Kinsey was the first person he thought about telling, so that said something. "I would have approached it by myself if I could. I didn't want to scare it away, or get kicked by it." he stopped himself for a second, considering the thought earnestly. "Getting kicked by a unicorn would probably make a great story, actually." Toby mused, correcting himself with a thoughtful gaze and solid nod to seal the deal. He didn't have 'get kicked by a unicorn' on his agenda today. Hopefully...
Toby felt the sudden urge to redeem himself, a comically defensive look on his face. but it wiped away. He snorted, offering Kinsey an animated eye roll through hid glasses, pushing them to the rim of his nose out of habit, "Ooh, pish-posh! You were my first choice, honest! That's why I'm here! I just don't have much finesse with getting words out like you do when I'm so stimulated." he reassured her in a more serious manner, followed by poking her in the side. Toby could honestly understand why she would feel that way, but he didn't really care because it was Kinsey, and he'd make it up to her somehow eventually. He'd happily do anything she asked him, Toby enjoyed being helpful. Now it was her time to help him, though, and he was going to take it.
When they finally reached the fresh air of the courtyard, Tobys footsteps quickened toward the grass, his legs taking long strides to carry him as fast as they could without running. A power walk of sorts. Nothing was fast enough. "It was just at the forests edge." he answered Kinseys question, a bit of disappointment already filling him because it definitely wasn't where it was before. His brown eyes widened in disappointment, mouth making a giant 'O' face before exclaiming, "UGHH wheeeere is it. What the hell!" he whined, the color already draining from his face as they quickly approached the spot. There was no unicorn. Toby threw himself in the grass and grumbled.

Kinsey's jaw dropped and she turned to stare at Toby as he continued. She wasn't seriously upset, but really? She was pretending to be upset because he only wanted her because she was a girl and he was confirming that more instead of saying it was because she was his best friend, like he was supposed to. Ooooh he was going to pay for this. She shrugged as he mentioned getting kicked by a unicorn. "Hmmm ... sounds like something that someone who uses his friends would deserve," she commented off-hand, not looking at him. If she did he'd probably know she was still teasing ... mostly. She rolled her eyes when he finally realized what she was getting at. "Yeah yeah, your first choice of girls, though you'd have gone without me if you thought you could. Do you deny it?" She arched her eyebrows, looking at him with a challenge in her eyes. Then she smiled a little. "It's a good thing I'm your first choice of girls though, or I'd have a few choice words to say to you," she nudged his shoulder with her own as they continued to walk. He was walking faster now and Kinsey hurried to keep up with him. It was obvious that the closer they got, the more excited he was and she couldn't keep herself from smiling. She liked seeing her friend so excited. At his word,s she scanned the edge of the forest, but she couldn't see anything. Her suspicions were confirmed by his annoyed whine as they approached the place in question. Kinsey stared at Toby for a second, lying in the grass. She didn't expect him to be that upset by this. She stepped forward and extended a hand toward him, "Come on Toby. We're not going to give up before we've even started. I'm sure it hasn't gone far. Come on." Hopefully they'd be able to find it, or another way to raise his spirits. Kinsey didn't want him to go from excited to disappointed so fast. tobias charles watkins

"You're right, I probably deserve to get kicked by a unicorn." he nodded his head in agreement with an obedient smile, brown eyes brightening, entertained by the idea. Even if it wasn't for something he had maybe done for today, he was a teenage boy and made stupid decisions more often than he would like to fess up to.
Toby shook his head defiantly at Kinseys 'giving up' statement. They were no where close to calling it quits. The Ravenclaw loved seeking a challenge, he was just a bit foolish in thinking a unicorn would hang out long enough to be discovered. "I'm not giving up. I brought these..." Toby whipped his backpack off of his back and dug for the sack full of oats he scavenged from the kitchen. He presented them by raising the sack into the air gloriously, where a chorus of angels could practically be heard. The House Elves obliged handing over the unicorn bait, one of the perks of being decent to everyone he encountered, though they probably just wanted Toby out of their kitchen because he was still buzzing from the siting.
"Heres this--" he flung an apple for her to catch, before pushing himself off of the ground with a grunt. Toby peered over his shoulder and in front of him with shifty eyes, making sure no one was watching them, which was a bit suspicious to begin with. There was no one around that he could see, so he took a couple of steps in direction of the Forbidden Forest. He wasn't going to walk straight inside, he was just staying at the edge, however, if he saw the unicorn he couldn't make any promises. Toby was typically a rule follower but this was different.

Kinsey rolled her eyes and turned to face Toby, laughing now. "No you don't." She pointed a warning finger at him, "And don't you dare start thinking that's a good idea just because it gets you close to the creatures." She wasn't really sure if Toby would, but she wanted to do her best to make sure he wouldn't. She didn't want him to get hurt for something like this. She watched Toby as he shook his head, insisting that he wasn't about to give up and then started rummaging through his backpack. She chuckled when she saw the oats. Of course he had oats. Toby wouldn't come to something like this unless he was entirely prepared, which was one of the things Kinsey really appreciated about him. He was thorough and when he wanted something, he went all out for it. "Good plan," Kinsey said, catching the apple, but barely. She actually fumbled with it a little before holding it securely in one hand, though she suspected Toby missed that fact, since he'd been busy getting up at the time. He started looking into the forest and Kinsey smiled as she followed his example. It was almost impossibly to distract Toby when he was on a mission like he was right now. The shadows were pretty still, from what she could tell. Her eyes moved from the left to the right, slowly growing used to the dark. After a minute, she started walking to the right as she looked. Then she reached back with one hand, waving it almost frantically. She could see something white in there. It wasn't close to the edge and definitely seemed like it was a little deeper into the forest than she'd like, but Kinsey wasn't going to deny Toby this opportunity. "Toby, I think ... am I right?" she whispered as she gestured with her head and pointing. It was actually there, right? tobias charles watkins

@kinsey | Note: heavy breathing UNICORNS |
As they scaled the edge of the forest, Toby was only growing more dangerously with curiousity as his eyes searched for any movement in the forest. Normally, breaking the rules wasn't Tobys first instinct and he would be against entering the forest...but it was broad daylight out. He knew what he saw and he wanted to see it face to face, if the creature allowed it. Now it only came down to tracking it down.
Tobys wishes were almost instantly answered as Kinsey reached for his attention. He took a step back toward her and lowered himself to her level and cocked his head in the direction she was pointing with wide brown eyes. His heart leaped out of his chest and he jumped up uncontrollably. "Ye--" he had to cut himself off with a hand to the mouth because he was about to make too many sounds of excitement, especially for the embarrassing squeal that slipped. Without thinking twice, he pulled Kinsey towards some bushes immediately in the forest to conceal them from being discovered by anyone (hopefully), definitely spilling a bit of oats on the forest floor. "Uh-fuck-if we get caught I will take the blame I swear." he whispered selflessly, much louder than the intended whisper, while his eyes shifted toward the confirmed unicorn excitedly. Toby took a couple of steps deeper into the forest, his inner sirens were going off crazily and telling him he wasn't supposed to be doing it, but it was also a bit of a thrill too. He couldn't stop himself. Toby crouched next to a log to conceal himself from the unicorn, though he was much too tall and ended up hiding behind a tree instead. "...See if you can slowly walk up to it... Let it smell your hand... You must gain its trust." he instructed while breathing comically heavily, more bossily at this point, but he was honestly just trying to help.
It was dramatically darker in the forest, despite the sun being at its prime time outside the forest, it was very eerie inside the abyss. There were chirps, and croaks, and random dripping sounds. This was no place for teenagers. But it could potentially be a once in a lifetime moment, so he was going to take it. They had already gone this far, there was no backing out now.

Kinsey was relieved when she had Toby's attention almost immediately. She wasn't bad at recognizing magical creatures, but she knew he was better at it. He cared more about them than she did. So when he started jumping and cutting himself off, she couldn't help but smile. She was glad that she could help him at least find it. Next thing she knew, he was dragging her into the forest. Well, he was only really dragging her for a second, until she realized what was going on. Honestly, she hadn't expected they would go into the forest, but she also didn't think that they were going to let the unicorn get away. She just hadn't thought that far ahead. Toby seemed to get nervous, saying he would take the blame and Kinsey rolled her eyes. "We're not going to get caught. Just calm down so we can get close to this unicorn, alright?" She glanced back up, nodding when she saw the creature still there. Good. If it disappeared now Toby would probably start running through the forest crazily in search of it. She followed him as he stepped over to a tree, obviously trying to hide ... or just not scare the unicorn. She wasn't quite sure which. She listened as he explained, her eyebrows furrowing. "Should I take the oats too? Or is that once I've gained it's trust, so it'll let you near?" After a moment, Kinsey stepped out from behind the tree, smiling as she took slow steps forward, towards the beautiful white unicorn. Why was she smiling? Probably to make herself feel more at ease more than anything else. The creature stared at her, its nostrils flaring though the rest of it seemed frozen. "Hi," she said softly, more to put herself at ease than anything else as she took another step forward. "My name is Kinsey ... I'm here with my friend Toby. I've never seen a unicorn before. Hope I don't scare you off ... Toby would never forgive me." Kinsey's tone was reassuring as she moved closer and closer. The unicorn continued to stare at her. After a few steps its tail flicked, but it didn't make any other movements. Once she drew close, she extended a hand, staying a couple of feet away at first. "You don't mind if I touch you, do you? We can be friends too, right?" Ever so slowly, she inched forward, freezing when the unicorn stepped toward her. Kinsey's hand was still extended in front of her and, to her surprise, the unicorn reached out with its nose and touched it softly. The creature moved closer then and Kinsey started rubbing it's face and neck, slowly moving towards its back. "Toby," she called out softly, still rubbing the creature. "I think you can come now." The unicorn nuzzled her shoulder and Kinsey laughed softly, moving her attention back to rubbing it's nose. This ... this was incredible. tobias charles watkins

@kinsey | Note: heavy breathing UNICORNZ |
The pair had a rather comedic exchange before throwing her out to the unicorn, Toby frantically flailed his arms around, spilling oats into her hand messily to grant her request, but they fell onto the ground because he was shaking so much. He jumped up and down, "Take oats, take whatever you need, go go guh oh my god-" he spurted out nonsense, unable to whisper anymore.
Toby watched with his head poked out from behind the tree, his excitement intensifying by the minute. He was fully aware he was overly excited, but there was no containing his joy as he watched with wonder and amazement as Kinsey approached the unicorn. He was ready to intervene if for some reason it tried to attack her, but the majestic beast seemed rather cordial; it seemed to enjoy the way Kinsey talking to it. He was starting to get anxious awaiting Kinseys signal to reveal himself, but it came much quicker than he thought it would. The Ravenclaw slowly emerged from behind the tree with widened brown eyes, he had to resist a smile because he was afraid of scaring the unicorn away with the manic grin he would probably offer the white horse. All he could do was focus on breathing and not passing out from sheer excitement. That would have been super embarrassing, even in front of his best friend Kinsey, who was already fully aware of how soft he was capable of being. Usually around magical creatures he could keep his cool, but he never really thought he would see a unicorn so up close and personal.
The boy took a couple of very slow and cautious steps toward the unicorn. The white horse didn't budge while Kinsey was giving it a bit of a rub down. "Uh-'ey Mate." Toby cooed at the unicorn, since it seemed to like the way Kinsey was speaking to it. He carefully closed the distance between him, the unicorn, and Kinsey, keeping an extended hand from his body towards the beast. The unicorns lips quivered toward him and lapped over the palm of his hand to munch up the oat offerings. Toby let out a gasp of surprise due to it tickling more than he expected, he tried not to laugh or make any sudden movements in fear of spooking the creature. But they seemed calm, which only put Toby more at ease. It didn't appear to want to kick or headbutt him, so that was excellent. The boy brought a hand up to pet the creatures back, to offer some back scratches, which it seemed to enjoy thoroughly. "Oh, yeah, that's the spot" he scratched animatedly.
Toby turned to Kinsey, finally feeling at ease enough to speak above a whisper for the first time since entering the Forbidden Forest. He almost forgot where he was after all of the excitement. "That was certainly an unconventional way of gaining a unicorns trust, but that was brilliant." Toby was unable to hide how impressed he was by the interaction. "They really like you, Kins." he chuckled, watching in awe as the unicorn completely submitted to her touch. The horse followed by nuzzling into Toby and licked the side of his face, sniffing him in search of more oats.

Obviously, Toby was losing control of himself before she made her way over to the unicorn. She couldn't help but chuckle and shake her head as he freaked out, trying to give her oats and dropping them on the ground as he verbally lost control of his words as well. She left him to calm himself down, knowing that her staying would only make it worse. Kinsey glanced back to Toby when she told him to join her, hoping that he found some way to help himself be a little more relaxed. If not, she wasn't quite sure how this was going to go. The unicorn didn't seem to mind her touching it and being close ... she internally begged Toby to be in control of himself as he approached. Watching him, she breathed out a sigh of relief. His eyes were wide, but he wasn't even smiling, which in and of itself was evidence that he found his cool. She smiled when she heard him start talking to the unicorn too. Apparently she started a trend. She continued to rub the creatures nose as she waited for him to approach, but moved to rubbing its neck when Toby got close enough to offer it the oats. Toby was gasping, but was obviously delighted as he petted the creature and Kinsey returned to petting its head, rubbing it between the eyes, laughing softly as Toby continued talking to the unicorn. "Don't worry buddy, I won't let him get too crazy," she said in a soft voice, speaking loud enough that she knew Toby could hear her. She could almost feel Toby as he turned his attention to her. "What, you've never heard of people talking to animals before?" she answered, teasing him back. "Thanks. Wasn't sure it'd work, but I'm glad it did." She grinned, proud that she actually impressed Toby with that. Honestly, creatures were his thing. She liked them, but didn't normally get along with them so well. At his next compliment, she rubbed the unicorn a little more thoroughly, "And I like you too, you beautiful creature you." She laughed when it turned to Toby, nudging him. "I think he wants more food," Kinsey commented, though she was sure Toby could tell. Still, she loved the chance to tease him. tobias charles watkins

@kinsey | Note: heavy breathing UNICORNZ |
Toby pat the white horse on the back lightly while turning to Kinsey. "Of course I have heard of talking to animals....you were one step away from inviting the unicorn to tea time..." he chortled, his lips tugging upwards into a toothy smile. "I kind of had a feeling like you might have to sing to it like a Disney princess or something, but your method was very effective." Toby joked playfully with a snort. The image of his best friend singing to a unicorn popping up in his head was actually pretty funny. Somehow he was containing his excitement, no longer threatening to boil over, but he couldn't wipe the stupid smile off of his face, even if he tried.
'And I like you too, you beautiful creature.' With uncanny timing, Toby cocked his head to the side. "Ohhh, stop, I knooow that I'm just so beautiful." he waved at Kinsey bashfully with a humorous expression, waggling his eye brows animatedly in jest. The unicorn nudged Toby a bit more, sniffing him with flaring nostrils, Ugh, I should have brought more oats.." he sighed sharply, feeling as if he let his new friend down. He offered the remnants of the open sack to the creature and turned to Kinsey, "Thank you for being down to join me, no matter how crazy the idea. I think I can die happy now." Toby declared with a nod. Okay, maybe that statement was a bit of a lie because there were so many more creatures his eyes hadn't seen face to face yet, but it was all a matter of tracking them down eventually. Whenever he was acquainted with a new creature, it was always the next best day of his life.
