Alice guessed it was an elemental, and that sounded like a good word for it as it was made up of earthy elements. Although Neville had assured him that he only needed to treat it as he would treat a dog--and it was known to all that Phil was the last person to antagonize an animal--Phil decided to wait and see how Alice approached it, just to be on the safe side.
While he waited to see what Alice would do so he could emulate her, he listened to his father inform them a bit on this animal. A thornwolf. Grasshound. Thorn elemental. He was fascinated, especially because the information about it combined both the fundamentals of magizoologoy and herbology. It was a combination of what he and Alice were fond of. He was fascinated that it was very much a plant at the same time that it was a wolf. Well, maybe a little more like a plant than a wolf, but still. "How do they reproduce? Do they pollinate, or do they breed just as a mammal does?" he asked.
He looked at his father when he asked them the question. He could only think of the obvious. "Well...the way the plant mimics the animal, its general mannerism, behavior, and movements are that of a wolf. As for how the animal mimics the plant, it hides its appearance by allowing plants to grow on them, it absorbs the basic elements that plants need for sustenance and growth; its even got the acidic liquid within it that a pitcher plant has to devour its prey."

Her father never ceased to amaze her. It was like he knew just how to communicate with his kids, or in this case get them to communicate with one another. Something that Alice was sure that her father knew they didn't do well with on their own. But Alice had to admit, he could not have found a better creature to break the ice with. One with the characteristics of both anima and plant. Alice smiled, not just because she was in the presence of an elemental but because for once... she was spending time with her father and her brother and she was happy.
Alice watched her father as he rubbed the elemental's nuzzle then slowly began to approach it, her hand out with her palm facing up to let the creature know she had nothing to hide. Her free hand was open and at her side, in sight so it would know she had nothing behind her as well. She smiled slightly in spite of the situation, and as the elemental seemed to sniff her hand a moment, she glanced up at Phillip who was watching her. She felt slightly self-conscious that her brother was observing her, but that was because she knew him so little. It was practically like a stranger watching her. After a moment of letting the elemental sniff her palm, Alice slowly turned her palm over and the elemental allowed her to then rub its nuzzle as well. Alice smiled widely now, then looked up at her father. She then looked up at Phillip, suddenly with instinctually encouraging eyes, willing him to try it next.
Alice loved creatures, magical and non, more than anything in the world. She wanted to answer her father's question as soon as he had asked it but Phillip seemed to beat her to it. This surprised her, but as she watched her brother as he answered, a smile appeared on her face. Her brother was very intellectual about this kind of stuff. She wondered why that had surprised her so. She realized she probably wouldn't have been able to answer it as well as he had. Normally this kind of thing would ignite jealousy somewhere within Alice but now, all she felt was... proud.
Alice watched the elemental, how it really did resemble a big dog. Then she turned back to her father. "Dad... where did you come across this?" She asked, the amazed tone make no effort to hide itself. Alice only wished she could one day find a creature that little was known about like this. Or even better, discover a new creature.

Neville watched Alice approach the elemental with all the care and skill that a decade of love for animals had granted her. Whatever she did in life, wherever she went to work with animals, she would be amazing. He could even see her teaching the subject later on in life, with the way she turned to her brother and that you-can-do-it look in her eyes. Though if she ended up teaching she’d probably be more like McGonagall than her father in teaching methods. Consequence of inheriting her great-Gran’s attitude, he supposed. Phil, for his part, seemed content to wait for his sister and shadow her, instead asking how they reproduce. “They pollinate, but the action mimics breeding. And they don’t typically seed, though a few of them get to be so old that they root permanently and become a bush that grows elementals. Most of the time, the ‘female’ so to speak grows the young in a womb of sorts. Once it’s big enough, it splits off via fragmentation. Young thornwolves are nutritious to herbivores, and since they’re plants they don’t really have the adolescent learning stage, so they behave like adults. A lot of them get eaten as a result, which keeps the population in check.”
He blinked as Philip proceeded to regurgitate what he’d just told them as an answer to his question. Neville raised an eyebrow and smirked, reaching up with two fingers to poke his son in the forehead. “I asked what you saw, not what I told you. You know plants. Look harder.” Alice asked where he had gotten the thornwolf. The amazement in her voice was undisguised, and he couldn’t help but feel a little smug about that. It was nice to know he could still pleasantly surprise his children. “That particular one, I grew myself. I should mention, I am licensed to handle these elementals, it’s only that I’m not supposed to have them at Hogwarts.” Well, Neville actually held the title of Grand Herbologist of the Wizengamot, which meant his presence was required at all Wizard trials where plants were involved, and he had no limitations or restrictions on importing, exporting, or handling magical plants. He was considered the best in Britain, whether he was or not. It was useful at times, though annoying to deal with trial work.
“This one is descended from a pack I found in Scotland, oh…twelve years ago maybe? A friend of mine was losing sheep to them and wanted my help stopping them from attacking. I set up a few wards to keep them away, but I also ended up bringing five of the pack back with me.” Those five had been the progenitors of hundreds, guarding the Forbidden Corridor and the corrupted Mirror of Erised, as well as helping create the massive thornwolf pack that roamed Longbottom Hill as a defensive line. The only imported plant more important to him was the Japanese Wood Dragon, the rarest, strongest plant elemental known in the world. He grinned in spite of himself. “I’ve grown quite fond of them, so even though I’m not supposed to have them on the grounds, I occasionally raise one at a time in secret. If you two would like to study them more, I can take this one home to live in the Glade during holidays.”
