THERE WAS NO PLACE QUITE LIKE HOME. JUST like Dorothy said. And while Jimmie loved the atmosphere of Hogwarts, the hustle and the sheer amount of new gossip just floating in the wind, she enjoyed the stolen moments in her own bed. With her favourite pillows and her walls mottled with a thousand different posters and prints.
Though, despite having a whole weekend of freedom, Jimmie had spent most of it up in the Blishwick's dingy attic. She was attending her last year, in less than that things would change. She'd graduate, move home or away. Get a job... And perhaps it was making her a little nostalgic. Rifling around in boxes filled with great, dusty tomes and envelopes filled with old photographs. Both still and animated.
Using her wand, Jimmie lowered another box down through the square entrance on to their landing floor. "Heads up!" She warned, not even bothering to watch as the box thumped on to the floorboards. She was too busy clutching an old book with the name 'Blishwick' pressed along the spine in gold leaf. She followed the box soon after, taking the ladder one handed as she reentered reality once again, squinting at the abundance of light as she hopped down from the last step daintily.
"Oh, hi dad!" Jimmie said cheerily, not at all daunted by the prospect of being caught snooping. "I found our family tree!" She added, shrugging one shoulder to gesture at the large book in her arms. She nudged the box on the floor, scooting it in the direction of the living room. "I thought maybe we could take a look at some stuff before I head back." In reality, Jimmie had always been curious about her lineage. But, it was hard not to be put off when her grandparents had always stressed about how unfortunate it was that she was a girl. Her reluctance was based entirely on spite.

09.XX.2024 Hadn’t school just started? That was only one of many questions running through Jimbo’s head when he had signed off on the paperwork owl’d to him from Hogwarts that would allow Jameson to come home for the weekend. The first thing that came to mind was that she could have had an actual interview with the Daily Prophet – according to her the one submitted over the summer had turned out well. But she also had another year of school yet, so he was quite confused nonetheless and the last thing he was going to do was allow her to drop out a year early just to pursue a career in journalism. The Prophet wasn’t going anywhere any time soon, and there were always new job postings in the paper. Jimbo knew. He read it daily.
The other possibility was that the influx of American students meant she had finally met her match and she was being bullied. From the way she had spent the entirety of her visit up in the attic digging around, he thought better of that. Every now and again he would hear the soft thud of another box of stuff being levitated down, and occasionally, back up again. It was hard to miss it, his office was located directly next to the crawl space leading to the attic, the only separation being the wall between the office and the living room. He found himself wandering up from time to time to look through the boxes: years and years of old Christmas decorations were the first to come out and get shoved aside, though he had half the mind to store them in an empty closet downstairs with the holiday’s right around the corner. Little did Jameson know, but her bedroom was typically the storeroom for that, and Jimbo always had a laugh from it when he raced to put everything up before she got back from school. Free space was free space after all. Aside from the Christmas boxes, stacks of old books and long forgotten family heirlooms that used to reside in the store were amongst some of the other things he pulled out on his own. He wasn’t exactly sure what Jameson was looking for, but it wasn’t any of those.
What did seem to interest her though, was the book containing the family tree, which had Jimbo interested enough to dodge the box being sent down directly ahead of it. “Hi,” he returned her greeting, watching the newest box get shoved to the side as well. “You don’t say? Well it’s not that interesting, unfortunately. Unless you go way back. Then you might recognize a couple of the names.” He was referring to the wife of the first Jimbo Blishwick, his great-great-great grandmother, Misapinoa Black. Jimbo had heard a number of reasons for that marriage, but he would wait to see Jameson’s reaction first. It was much more entertaining to talk about old family stories. “Toss it on the coffee table and we'll give it a read. Tea?” Jimbo asked as he started moving towards the kitchen. Knowing her, this was going to include a lot of questions, and didn’t want to miss his afternoon tea time during it.

JIMMIE HADN'T BEEN ABLE TO STOP THINKING about what Steve had said when she'd been interviewing him. There was no telling where vampire blood could lie on a family tree. Though, Jimmie was certain she had none of it in her own, she suddenly felt an overwhelming desire to know more about her history. She'd spent so long avoiding it, almost ashamed at being born, that now that she was older, it seemed like she knew nothing at all.
"I have time." Jimmie shrugged, egged on by the challenge of it as she side-stepped her father and kicked the box another half inch along their polished hard wood floors. Her hands taken up by the heavy family tree. She continued to edge the box past her father and down toward the living room, pleased that he was willing to indulge her but knowing that he would even without asking. "With honey!" She called over her shoulder, almost skating down the hallway on socked feet. "Please." Turning, Jimmie flashed her dad quick grin before she turned the corner, leaving the box in the threshold to throw herself on the sofa and wait.

09.XX.2024 “Excellent!” Jimbo chimed when she said that she had time. And if they didn’t have enough to go through the whole thing today, there were always weekends and breaks in the future. This was the first time Jameson had seemed even remotely interested in where the family came from. Hopefully that would bring up more questions about the business and the ability they had. She had heard the basic version of it hundreds, if not thousands, of times already, and even Jimbo was getting tired of regurgitating that one over and over again. While the true story was kind of boring, the family history in the store and how it came to be (and how it continued to thrive) had the propensity of being interesting. He had certainly found it so when his grandfather had told him when his ability first started to manifest. Back then it was important to get all the facts about it figured out early. Going around willy-nilly and matching kids at Hogwarts together was horrible for business, mostly because it was free. Jimbo chuckled as he remembered getting a Howler stating those exact words after offhandedly putting a young pureblooded child with a muggleborn. It wasn’t his fault that they were made for each other.
The water for the tea was boiled instantly with a few flicks of his wand and the assistance of a charmed muggle tea kettle that had a habit of both heating up quickly and spouting steam prematurely to get attention. Jimbo gathered all of the necessary ingredients: tea bags, honey (per Jameson’s instructions), mugs, and kettle, and levitated them into the living room. “I figured we’ll be here for a while,” he stated as he placed the tea set down on the coffee table. This made sure they weren’t jumping up every so often to get more tea. “Start at the beginning?” Jimbo asked.

THE EARTHY STEAM OF FRESH TEA WARMED Jimmie as she sat cross legged on the sofa, watching her father levitate the whole tray across the room to settle on the coffee table in front of them. He did it with the kind of flair only a Blishwick could manage and Jimmie admired the grace of it as she leaned forward and poured them both a cup full, seeing as he'd gone to the effort of making it. She dumped a teaspoon of honey in to hers while he settled beside her, reaching for the book as her cup cooled.
"You know, I was going to start from the middle and work my way out..." Jimmie deadpanned as she pulled the great big tome in to her lap, looking up at her dad with an expression of flat sarcasm before lifting the front cover open. The spine crackled from lack of use and Jimmie rubbed a smudge of dust from a sharp corner as she turned it so they could both see. On the front page, in an ornate script, was the Blishwick name and a date underneath in a smaller, faded print - 1823.
"Jeez, that's... a long time ago." Jimmie commented absently, brows quirking. She had always known that her heritage spanned an impressive length of time, but she'd never seen it in plain writing before. She turned to the next page where the first recorded Blishwick was laid out before them, the name 'Jimbo' slapping her in the face. "Ugh, why Jimbo?!" She asked in crude distaste, knowing that it had everything to do with her own misfortune of a name.

09.XX.2024 Jameson was too quick for him, already pouring both of their cups by the time he was settled onto the sofa. He always thought it was funny watching someone pour a full tea kettle or coffee pot, scalding water dancing on the edge of the spout daringly as the victim balanced it. One slip and there would be more than a burned hand and hot water on the floor. That was what magic was for, and Jimbo typically preferred the delicate levitation of the pot to the unsteady, shaky hands of a person attempting to pour a drink. Dribbles on the rim of a cup and water rings at the base were some of his biggest pet peeves, not to mention the stains they left on hard surfaces. When new clients came in for the full service, Jimbo always offered drinks so he was accustomed to showing off his hosting skills. Tempting fate by hand pouring was not something he was willing to do, especially with the big money clients. Slip ups like that could mean hundreds, if not thousands, of galleons. Big ticket pureblood singles could pay store and living expenses for the majority of the year if played right. That was why the history in the leather-bound family tree was so important. Two-hundred years’ worth of experience in the industry had been built up for Jimbo to maintain. Slacking would be like spitting on past the other Jimbos’ legacy. “Oh we can start there too. Whatever you want,” Jimbo smiled back at his daughter, expertly deflecting her sarcasm. It was funny: she didn’t show interest in running the store after he retired (and for good reason, since it was almost impossible without the magical ability), but the history of the family had been interesting enough to get her attention. To want to learn about it. Jimbo had purposely not brought up the full story before because it wasn’t going to apply to Jameson in the future. Their expedition to the Daily Prophet over the summer had proven that she didn’t need to stick to the shop in order to be successful. Plus, having the last hurrah with Blishwick Matchmaking was a very Jimbo-esque thing to happen. He liked the idea of ending it on a positive note, whenever that day came. He picked up his tea cup and sipped gently on it, a few short bursts of breath blown on it to cool it off just enough so that his lips weren’t scorched. Jameson pointed out that the family started a ‘long time ago’, and he slowly nodded his head. Unfortunately Jimbo had just missed out on being alive at the same time as Jimbo Jr., the first successor the original. “Good question,” he chuckled at her distaste for his first name. “I believe the first was actually a James, but went by Jimbo. And then that stuck, so the rest of us were named it as well.” Jimbo took another long sip of his tea as he stuck a finger down on the name of the first Jimbo’s wife, Misapinoa. “Now this lady right here is the reason we have a business in the first place. She was part of the Black family, and the marriage between herself and Jimbo the First meant that the Sacred Twenty-Eight would have an official matchmaker for the arranged marriages. Obviously that still continues to this day, though a lot less formal.”

THE MORE HER FATHER EXPLAINED ABOUT THE origin of the infamous name, the less she liked it. Her nose wrinkled, scoffing as she turned her head back to the book and shook her head. "It's not even a good nickname," She grumbled, her distaste never ending. Though, she was more sore because it was the awful tradition that led to her own unfortunate name, too. That and her lack of an XY chromosome.
She didn't reach for her tea when her dad did, skimming her eyes over the page instead. Even for a handwritten copy, the script was ornate. She followed his finger up to the very first name printed. "Misapinoa..." Jimmie muttered, a wrinkle between her brows. "I didn't know we were related to the Black family." She lifted her head, confusion clean on her face. She'd read the history books, been present in plenty of classes that had detailed the wars and those involved. The Black name had come up more than once.
"The sacred twenty eight..." Jimmie gnawed on the inside of her cheek. She'd heard of it, though hadn't paid much attention. When professors spoke of 'pureblood', they always came around to the 'sacred twenty eight'. "That's that bull- I mean that rubbish pureblood list, right?" She said, a disdainful look on her face. She already knew that her family had dealt in arranged marriages, so stayed far away from that topic lest she start a debate before she received some answers. It still irked her that some people came and requested such unions even nowadays. "Seems like a load of pseudo-magic to me."

09.XX.2024 The most Jimbo could offer his daughter at the origins of his name was a shrug. He decided it was best not to tell her that she would have also been a Jimbo, had she been a boy. She probably knew that, because that was how it worked. The real tricky part would have been whether she would have retained the same personality. A Jimbo that didn’t want to continue the family business would have been a shock for sure. Then again, an end to the age of matchmaking would have felt right if he was the final one. The business wasn’t exactly declining in the sense that they were losing profits. Every day, Jimbo put more people together. It was convincing the younger crowd, Jameson’s crowd, that he could help them as well. Kids were tough though. Eventually they would come around, but the younger clients lately had a lot of heartbreak to deal with. Placing blame on the online dating applications helped him reason with them though. Of course muggle technology couldn’t put them with The One. That was silly. “The Black family, and by extension, a lot of other families,” he explained. “But that was so long ago, it’s hard to call the recent lines our relatives. Current pureblood lines, like some of the sacred twenty-eight, would call into question our legitimacy as a pureblood family. Most of them are so intertwined and muddied now that it’s hypocritical.” Jimbo wanted to avoid calling it incestuous, because the Blishwicks were built to avoid that sort of thing. But over the years there had definitely been numerous crossovers between the sacred twenty-eight families, and the unregulated marriages usually caused hiccups in the system. He didn’t really care since the whole notion of continuing the pure lines was ridiculous. "It really is, but a lot of the remaining families don’t care. Tradition is just that; tradition. As long as everything checks out and both parties are for it, all we do is act as the intermediaries and provide the paperwork.” He preferred if they did everything his way, and allowed him to run their profiles through his logs to see if anyone else came up, but as he just told his daughter, tradition trumped all else. “In another few generations it won’t matter anymore anyways. Most of these lines are on their last heirs and aren’t fully pure. They’re just rich snobs pretending they are and giving us money to keep the charade up.”

JIMMIE'S DISBELIEF WAS QUELLED BY HER curiosity. She looked up at her dad with questions in her eyes, listening carefully as he explained the complicated nature of their connections. She supposed he was right, they were hardly related at all. But, the idea of Pureblood had never really been an issue for Jimmie. She simply cared and, like her father, agreed that it was questionable at best since nobody really knew how to untangle so many connected bloodlines. She thought it was all bogus anyway.
"It's disgusting, is what it is." Jimmie said bluntly, thinking about the lengths some pureblood families went to keep their supposed status. She turned back to the family tree and grumbled, "Or even legal, at that." She knew that some families had married cousins and worse over time. Anything to keep their names in that ledger. But it wasn't her job to police it. Not when she didn't care if she was muggleborn, half-blood or otherwise. Even if such a thing kept her father in business with such 'higher status' families.
"Better not write that in your pamphlet," Jimmie joked, though she smiled proudly at her father. She liked when he was putting on a show for a customer. The unflappable matchmaker who'd seen it all. "But, I will never forget you said that." She turned and patted her dad on the shoulder, beaming at him before she turned back to the book in her lap. "Can I trace this?" She said, peering down at it, her finger running across the branches. "For school." She knew he'd say yes, but she still asked. Her finger stopped over her mums name, covering it momentarily before she turned the page.

09.XX.2024 Jimbo wasn’t sure if he wanted to challenge his daughter on this one; she seemed set in her views on the arranged marriages, and once she was like that, she wasn’t going to budge on it. His own opinion on it was similar, but it was also hard to completely cut the traditions that the pureblood families had participated in. Doing so would destroy their core values, and those would probably never go away. At least not in his lifetime. That was why cousin marriages were only allowed for extreme cases, most of which Jimbo usually refused. The ones that did still participate in them completely omitted him. A middleman wasn’t necessary if they were going to do it regardless; the Blishwicks had simply been the tool to get away with it legally for the last two centuries.
He laughed as she warned against putting his own words in the advertisements. The strict families wouldn’t like that at all, even though they already knew it. Seeing it in print would be the last nail in the coffin, and Jimbo liked to think he played a part in that. Turning certain marriages away, making their legitimacy come into question by other families, only allowing ones that were serious and good for business; he really didn’t even need them anymore. There was enough business with his new methods, and the arrangements were viewed as bonuses to the business. “Only an idiot turns away good money,” he grinned back at her. “Like I said, I control what goes on with them. If I think the ones being arranged aren’t invested, I won’t sanction it.” Formalities were formalities, of course, and that didn’t stop all of them, but it did keep his hands clean. Only proper arrangements were conducted by a Blishwick.
Jameson’s pat on his back made him feel like he had said the right things. Somewhere in there they agreed on the same topics. She hadn’t seen the ugly side of the business because she didn’t need to. She didn’t want to. “Of course. Trace away,” he said with a sip of his tea. “History of magic finally doing a subject on family trees?” It seemed like a touchy subject, but would probably be interesting with all the students there now. Much better than his lessons while there.

JIMMIE HAD A LOT OF ISSUES WITH THE FAMILY business, but she respected her father's integrity. He truly believed in the matches he made. And while, in her opinion, he made some poor choices, she felt sure that it was his ability that was to blame for them. He couldn't control what he had inherited, and if he used it to fill their cupboards and buy her pretty shoes, she wasn't going to complain too much.
"I guess," She conceded, tucking her legs further under herself. She fought with her father about a lot of things, but rarely money. That was an argument she knew she couldn't win. "It's just..." She wrinkled her nose and shivered dramatically. "It's icky." Jimmie had often worried that her father would suggest such a match for her, but luckily his ability didn't work on his family. She thanked her lucky stars for that. "I would never give up my choice for tradition." She turned her nose up, her jaw sharp as she gave him a firm and resolute look.
As she pulled to book towards herself, Jimmie smiled beatifically at her father, "Not that it matters." Jimmie couldn't resist getting one last dig in, like some delayed rebellion. "I'm never getting married." Her father was a romantic at heart, which wasn't terribly shocking as he was a match maker. But, Jimmie liked to keep his expectations low, as he was an optimist by nature.
"Yeah," She sighed in answer. History of Magic wasn't Jimmie's favourite and she tended to zone out during more tedious lessons, but the idea of family trees had intrigued her. She was awfully nosy, and listening to everyone recount their supposed ancestors hadn't been as juicy as it was ridiculous. "There's this girl," Jimmie's face lit with excitement as she set the book aside, grabbing her cup of tea and turning to gossip with her father - one of her most favoured pastime. "She says she's related to Rowena Ravenclaw!" Eyes wide, Jimmie nodded severely.

09.XX.2024 There were times where Jimbo wished he understood what it was like to dislike the family business. He had never been given a choice, luckily the idea of running the store like the other five Jimbos had intrigued him since the day he first understood what they did there. Plenty of Hogwarts classmates and customers in his early years showed their distaste for his power though. A few unappreciated pairings (in which he was right and the couple refused to believe him) and he had become the laughing stock of Hogwarts. Good old fifth year. Regardless, they eventually married and lived happily ever after, all without a single thank you letter sent to the Blishwicks. A pivotal moment like that made him realize what the real purpose behind their business was – leading people towards love without any gratification on his end. Money was a supplement and a nice replacement for that, but he learned quickly that even the ones that did eventually listen to him didn’t always send their regards to him. The Blishwicks were just another tool, like muggle dating apps or websites. Jameson seemed to see it that way too, which was why he hadn’t pushed her towards succeeding him. Eventually they would go out of business, and ending it on his note would make it that much more bittersweet.
“I think choice turns out better in the end too. Luckily for us, that’s all we have,” he winked at his daughter. Jimbo liked to think that his power only increased the odds of personal choice. In a perfect world, without him or other forms of bringing lovers together, perfect partners could find each other. What was wrong with giving them a little boost in that? It made the hunt for a significant other that much easier too, assuming they were also in the Blishwick database. “Can I quote you on that?” Jimbo chuckled at her decision. “It’s cheesy, but you don’t know until it hits you. Then there’s no avoiding it.” Not that he was one to talk. His courtship, marriage, and subsequent entry into widowhood had been a fast seven years. Charlotte had been dead longer than they had been married by now, a fact that never seemed to want to go away. To be an expert in love but only spend a seventh of his life actually in it was hilarious whenever he looked at it.
Getting caught up in sentimental thoughts wouldn’t do right now though, because Jameson continued on about the project she was supposedly doing on their family tree. According to a classmate, and this brought a scoff out of Jimbo, someone was a descendant of the Ravenclaws. “Bullshit,” he swore. “There haven’t been any reported Ravenclaw family members in centuries. Even Hufflepuff ones are only rumors at this point.” He had to stand up from the couch and pace back and forth to return back to his normal demeanor, slightly peeved that someone would even have the gall to proclaim that. Bloodlines that old had ‘died’ out long before the Blishwicks were even in business. Making such a bold claim…it was absurd! Chin nestled in his hand as he continued the pacing, Jimbo tried to think of a way for his daughter to out the classmate. “You should slip her some veritaserum,” he offered. “Lying about her heritage isn’t something to be proud of.”

IT WAS TRUE THAT THERE WAS LITTLE JIMMIE appreciated about the family business. All bar two things. One; she could never be paired off as her peers were. For some unknown reason, the Blishwick ability did not extend to blood relations. Jimmie had never been more relieved to hear that her father would never find a match for her before she did, though she had no plans of her own anyways. Secondly; she was not burdened with the ability as her father was, as only the first male heir seemed to manifest it. However, this resentment might have been bred by the obvious disappointment from her relatives that she had not been a boy as she was supposed to be.
"It's the little things," She muttered, though she couldn't help the slight smile on her face. In times of weakness she wondered if it would be better if Blishwick's could match one and other. Then, perhaps, her father wouldn't have to live alone when she wasn't around any more. And then she promptly pinched herself as she was reminded that a person didn't need somebody to survive. Just like her dad, just like her. So, she rolled her eyes when her father went on one of his cliche speeches. Pulling back that snarky disrespect for his romantic tendencies as she gave him a derisive shake of her head.
"Save those lines for the paying customers, yeah?" She snipped, though her demeanour became positively gleeful as she shifted around, eyes wide. Her father rarely swore, so when he did she couldn't help but gasp a laugh. "I knew it!" She yelled triumphantly, smacking the cover of the book as she jumped in her seat with glee. Though her father seemed honestly insulted by the insinuation, the student had been one of many to make such claims. Every odd know-it-all had to lend their house traits back to some regal bloodline. But, little did they know, that Jimmie's father was knee deep in local heritage. It was practically his job to know who was who and what was what.
"Ve- veritaserum?!" Jimmie exclaimed, wide eyed as she listened to her father muse over possible ways to out the snotty student. Jimmie snorted, relaxing slightly as she strained to watch him pace around the living room. "I can't make that kind of potion," It was notoriously difficult to perfect, and Jimmie didn't want to be expelled for poisoning someone inadvertently. "And it's pretty expensive to buy..." Jimmie had always known her father had little patience for liars, but she was confused by how deeply offended he seemed. "I can just call her out, nobody really believes her any way." She tried to placate him, shifting on to her knees, the family tree abandoned to one side. "She won't be able to prove it." A wicked kind of glee overtook Jimmie at the prospect. "And I won't let her forget it."

09.XX.2024 The sheer enjoyment that his daughter took in knowing the classmate of hers was lying was enough to snap Jimbo out of his tiny funk that he had been put in during his pacing. He had spent decades working on and updating active magical bloodlines, and he detested this girl with a burning passion he didn’t even know he was capable of. During his work there was the occasional liar, though the success of their lie hinged on how they went about it. Jimbo was more prone to believe the claim if the person said they were an illegitimate child, an almost impossible thing to track without medical proof. These days it was easier to tell because there were so few ‘pure’ lines left, but back in the day everyone had a little bit of the Black family in them, the Blishwicks included. Nobody was exempt from that powerhouse.
As for veritaserum, Jameson seemed shocked at the idea of dosing her classmate with it. She even offered up other options. Jimbo preferred his methods over calling the girl out. Who knew how far she would be willing to go to maintain her lie. As far as they knew, her family had been telling the tall tale for centuries. “Sure it’s expensive, but well worth the detention or two you’d get from using it on her,” Jimbo teased. “As a Blishwick, she would have to believe you. Just say something about me never being wrong. There has to be at least a kid or two in your class that has parents we matched together. They’ll have your back.” Probably because they wouldn’t exist without the help of a Blishwick. Jimbo was far from being a narcissist, but he did get a shiver of excitement from knowing that so many people wouldn’t have been born had their parents never walked through his shop door.

THE IDEA OF SPIKING THE TRUTH OUT SOMEONE thrummed in Jimmie's journalist blood. Her eyes were wide with excitement, suddenly eager to get back to school and prove herself right by confronting the student. Maybe she could even get away with writing an article about it. The sudden influx of people lying about royal blood lines. She felt her smile turn sharp. "And you'd vouch for me?" She said with a lift of her brows. If she could get her hands on some Veritaserum, she'd certainly use it.
"Oh yeah..." She frowned, because Jimmie had always tried to distance herself from her father's legacy. The impact it had on other students was not something she could always ignore, but she sure tried. People looking at her as if she were like him, she wasn't. Or, if by being friends with her they could be matched for free. It was a slippery slope with having a famously talented father. She tended to hate it. "I guess I could do that." Suddenly, the Veritaserum wasn't sounding too risky after all. "Do you have any Veritaserum?" She perked up.
