Ash expected Eli to let the topic of his grades drop, since he already told her that she'd helped him last year, but it was almost like he wanted to be positive that she knew how much she helped him. Ashley's smile widened a bit and she couldn't stop herself from blushing slightly when he added that she saved his school year. She nodded, but honestly couldn't think of anything else to say that she hadn't already.
Then he was insisting that he couldn't get bored at any of her concerts, all but daring her to try and stop him. Ash laughed, shaking her head, "I'm not going to try and stop you. I'll give you tickets, anytime you want them." Why not? If she actually did end up going into singing she was sure she'd have a few tickets to give to family and close friends and if Eli really wanted to come ... well, maybe giving him tickets would make it actually happen. She knew most people had good intentions, but forgot things like silly concerts, but now she was finding that she didn't want him to. She wanted to sing and she wanted Eli to be there when she did.
Ashley could tell that Eli was a little bit embarrassed by his secret, which definitely made sense. He gave her something really personal, the fact that he made a charm out of metal that he and his mother collected. She never imagined that he put that much effort into his gift for her. Made her feel a little bit bad that all she ever did was buy gifts for him, but she wasn't about to say that out loud.
She didn't know what she expected when she started pushing her fingers against his, but Ash couldn't deny she was pleased when he started pushing back. It was almost like doing a thumb war, but with all their fingers and- weird as it may sound- the game was relaxing to her. Or maybe it was just the fact that she was touching Eli and didn't feel like she needed to pull away. He seemed to enjoy the game as much as she did, eventually looping his pinkie around hers. Their other fingers still pushed and pulled, but now it felt just a bit more stable. Maybe that was just Ash.
Eli teased her and Ashley's cheeks slowly started to burn as she smiled again and Eli caught her eye. She nodded, giggling softly when he said that was the best secret he ever heard. "You're just saying that," she muttered, tightening her grip on his pinkie as she did so. The next thing she knew, their fingers were entwined and he was pulling them up to his chin. Ashley leaned in closer, memories of the night they kissed flashing through her mind. For a moment, she couldn't remember why all of that stopped, why she wasn't supposed to be so close to Eli anymore. He asked her to let him come, his lips almost kissing her thumb before he lowered their hands. "Yes, okay. You can come next time." Ashley answered in a breathy whisper, unable to pull her eyes from his.
His next words were all too familiar, as he told her that he missed her and asked if that was a secret. Ashley's eyes finally left his, looking down to stare at their entwined fingers resting in his lap. Her hands tightened around his when he continued, saying that he missed how things used to be, how he missed this and suddenly she remembered. It almost felt like getting a bucket of ice-cold water dumped on her head unexpectedly. Ashley gasped ever so softly, her entire body tensing as the memories came back, the thoughts of the day when they argued in their meadow. The day where he decided they couldn't be friends. She knew that that decision was now up to her, that Eli wanted her friendship back. He was telling her that right now, for goodness' sake! Still ... Ashley was terrified. What if things ended up badly again? What if she hurt him or something happened and she lost him again? She didn't think her heart would be able to take that. He muttered that things could be like that again and Ashley felt herself start to shut down. She wanted to be friends with him again- she'd admit that to herself now- but she also didn't know if she could stand it. Ashley started to shake her head, "No, it can't. I- I can't do that. This, this was a mistake-" Ashley softly squeezed his hands and then started trying to softly pull them out of Eli's grip, though she didn't want to fight with him. She didn't want to pull away either, but she felt like she had to. It was so nice to have him touching her like this again but she shouldn't. She shouldn't have come here. "I'm sorry, I really am. I should ... I should go." She couldn't stop looking at his hands, wishing that he'd never let her go, but knowing that he would. He couldn't hold on to her forever, and she was almost certain he would respect her wishes. It might take a few minutes though, and she was trying to prepare herself for that chance.
