THE HOGWARTS LIBRARY WAS AWARD WINNING, but Ana could name a half dozen places she'd rather be than among the stacks at any given time. It was too dark, dull and dingy for her taste. And the smell of old books kind of made her want to heave, if she were totally honest. And the library was absolutely chock full of older than dirt books. And yet, there she was, wandering the stacks in search of her new study group.
The incessant squeak of Ana's Gripper followed her through the piles of books. With every squeeze of her hand, it whined, but she was deaf to it as she craned her neck. She was only there because her mum had stressed the importance of good graduating grades. And sure, maybe Ana had gotten a little side-tracked at the beginning of the year. It was her last year playing 'Puff Quidditch, for christsake! Now, as they trundled down in to November, Ana was forced to play catch up.
"Hey, is this the Potions study group?" Ana whispered, looking down at some boy with his head tucked deep in a book. She reached over and gently pushed the corner of the hardback up to check the subject. Potions. Which was, if anything, a good start. She continued to squeak as she tugged a chair out with the toe of her shoe. "I'm here for a tutoring gig, or something?" She shrugged as she sat down, the speed of her flexing hand picking up as she grew a little bit nervous. She didn't want anybody to think she was stupid, she wasn't stupid.

Well, it seemed like the Potions study group was yet another complete failure. It was pretty obvious that students just weren't interested in spending extra time dedicated to discussing Potions, their properties, or even getting aid with their coursework. Nope. No one showed up today in the Library. Toby felt like a loser because he was the only one that consistently attended the study group, aside from a few others, but today they were no where in sight. So Toby sat at the lonely table anyways, enjoying the peace and quiet with his nose buried deep into an Advanced Potions.
The tranquility regrettably didn't last for very long. Probably about two minutes. The still air of the Library was suddenly filled with an annoying squeaking sound. Toby disregarded it to a fidgety student in a squeaky chair at first, but as the rapid squeak continued, it got more rapid, and it was travelling around the Library. It was extremely distracting. Usually the eagle was good at the whole 'mind over over matter' thing but today he was finding it a little difficult. Then the squeak was coming toward him, fast.
Toby quickly lifted the Potions book in front of his face and pretended like he was reading, an attempt to avoid any awkward engagement, but it was too late. Someone stopped in front of him, following with pushing the side up his book upwards. "Uh--wha-" At first his expression twisted from an uncontrollable annoyed look, contorting quickly into a strong look of curiosity. Eyes peering upwards through thick rimmed glasses at a girl he didn't know. It didn't appear that she was trying to bully, or annoy him, she was searching for the study group. "This is it." he said awkwardly, gesturing to the empty table and chairs.
His warm brown saucers fell on the machine squeaking rapidly in her gripped hand, cocking his head to the side curiously with pursed lips as he observed in silence for a moment; probably a moment too long because he had to shift in his seat and clear his throat when he realized he was hypnotized by the rhythmic squeak now. "What in Merlins name is that?" he stared at her blinkingly, widened eyes glued to the obvious Muggle contraption in utter amazement. He was filled with curiosity now and there was no hiding it.

ANA HAD EXPECTED THE STUDY GROUP TO consist of more than a single, bespectacled boy and a couple piles of parchment, but alas it seemed to be just them. She slung her back over the chair beside him with a shrug, throwing herself in to the hardback of it and immediately swinging on the back two legs as she flexed her hand rhythmically. At least, with less people, she felt less stupid. Or, did that mean that she was the only one that needed the support? She shook off that train of thought as quickly as it came to her.
"Is it just us?" Ana asked, the front two legs of her chair landing back on the ground with a thwack as she reached for a loose piece of parchment to peer at it curiously, without ever really reading what was on it. "Can a study group really be called a group of there's only like, two people?" She snorted at her own joke, still flexing her hand as she let the loose piece of parchment flutter back on to the table.
Though, Ana's attention was drawn back to the boy when he finally spoke again. "What do you mean?" She asked in confusion, looking around for whatever had irked him enough to break his vow of silence. But, he was staring at where her other hand was tucked under the table. She unveiled it with a grin, "Oh, you mean my Gripper 5000?" She displayed it while still curling her hand around it every two or three seconds.
"This is my broom hand," Ana explained, as if it were that simple. Setting her arm on the table and watching his eyes follow the easy squeak with either irritation of fascination, she couldn't be sure. "Do you wanna try?" Finally, she stopped, but only to offer him one of the nifty rubber handles, indented for each individual finger. "C'mon, it helps with quill cramp..." She nodded at where he was holding his quill. He was probably the type that would understand that, she thought. Everybody had a tick.

When the girl mentioned the dead obvious, Toby couldn't help his ears going red with embarrassment. She was right. His excuse for a study group was admittedly pretty pathetic. Toby nodded, "That's a great observation and I do agree with you, but alas, this study group is full of a bunch of flakers... so it's a hit or miss really. Mostly a miss." Toby shared with a straight face, shrugging apathetically at the end. There was no need to sugar coat it because it was the known truth. Some weeks were better than other, this week wasn't one of those weeks, unfortunately.
As Ana demonstrated the Muggle hand machine with a comical finesse, he blinked at her hand a few times, his warm brown eyes flickering with curiosity, mostly trying to digest what she meant by her 'broom hand'. His lips pursed out in thought, "Gripper 5000" he mused after her, his eyebrows quirking upwards as she extended it toward him to give it a try. He actually wasn't expecting that, so he shifted in his seat slightly, dropping his quill to the desk messily. Toby hesitated, staring at the device with uncertainty with wide brown eyes. "Ehh...I better not--uh--okay fine." he almost instantly gave in. It was the mention of quill cramp that sold him, but he quickly regretted how much he underestimated the tiny squeaking hand machine once it was in his puny little hands. All masculinity was instantly sucked out of him once he gave it a solid attempt. The machine made a single squeaking sound and his face faltered. "Ooh..." his head cocked backwards and he did it again. "Nahhh." he shook his head side to side in fervent distaste, desperately trying to hand it back over to her.
Gripper 5000: 2 Toby: 0
Toby turned toward the girl, obviously trying take extra care in not being rude. "Please don't take this the wrong way, but what are you even doing here? This doesn't really seem like your scene..." he admitted quite frankly, his lips slowly twitching into a bashful smile to show he didn't mean any harm by the comment. The Ravenclaw was genuinely curious what her intentions were when it came to the embarrassingly unsuccessful study group. "My name is Toby, by the way."

THOUGH ANA HAD ONLY BEEN JOKING IT WAS obvious she had hit a sore spot when the poor boy blushed from the back of his head, upwards. "Suppose two is better than one right?" Ana said tentatively, gnawing on the inside of her cheek as she squeezed her gripper twice to alleviate the awkwardness. It didn't help as much as she would have liked, but it did fill in the spaces between their silence.
However, when the boy's attention shifted to the gripper, Ana was more than happy to shift the conversation towards it. She pushed it at him, staring expectantly until he gave in. She watched with a grin as he braced it - all wrong, right enough - and gave it an awful squeeze. It barely moved an inch, but Ana was not deterred. She laughed slightly, shaking her head as she pushed out of her seat and plonked down on the one beside him, scooting it closer so that she could pick up the gripper and hold his wrist. She curled her hand around his, smaller but stronger as she pulled his hands together from thumb to pinkie, pressing down tightly until the gripper flexed once.
"Once you get in to a rhythm it's real easy." Ana said enthusiastically, though she released his hand, leaving behind a slight pink imprint of her small fingers on the back of his. She flexed her hand once more, nodding along with it before she set it down on the table with great reluctance. He wasn't sold, clearly. Already moving the conversation elsewhere. Ana gave a short laugh, shaking her head slightly.
"That obvious, eh?" She said, picking at the rubber handle of her gripper. "My... mum says I have to pick up my OWL levels this year." Rolling her eyes, Ana was vexed to admit it. She wasn't dumb, but she wasn't exactly taking NEWT's either. "I don't know why, it's not like I gotta be a genius to play football or quidditch." Which was all Ana really wanted to do, but she wasn't about to defy her mum either. Elena Krum was a formidable woman. "Ana." She smiled, waving her gripper at him as she sat back in her seat. "D'you think you can help me study?"

The girl coached him a bit with the gripper without much success. She made a solid effort and scootch over to offer assistance, her hand squeezing over his quite intimately. Toby gave it a solid attempt, but he was distracted by the smell of her shampoo or something. Damn, she smelled good. She encouraged him to try it again because it 'took a rhythm' but he just stared at it, trying to hide the defeated look, and his masculinity draining from his core. "Meh." he shrugged awkwardly, uninspired by The Gripper 5000.
As she shared her study woes, she mentioned playing football and quidditch, oddly enough, Landon popped into his head. This was probably one of his people. Landon was his friend for a while, but Toby hated sports, so sometimes he came off as a bit antisocial at times when it came to those things with the other boy. "Football, eh?" he let a light laugh slip, before asking her in more of a more conversational, hopeful tone, "I'm guessing you probably know Landon then?" The Puff had been a good friend of his for a few years now and he helped with his homework sometimes. Toby could tell by her rhythmic gripping that Ana probably didn't want to be here, mostly because her Mum wanted her there, probably. "Well, some dead guys name I can't remember once said: 'Knowledge is Power'." he recited with an animated noble tone with a pair of dorky air quotes before dropping them awkwardly to his lap, where he twiddled his thumbs absentmindedly, "There's nothing wrong with having to brush up on a few subjects, sometimes we get rusty overtime." he tried to encourage her about school, because it was probably important to athletes in more ways she was giving it credit for. "You having nothing to worry about, you'll be outsmarting those buffoons on the field no problem." he told her, not realizing how flirtatious those kind of comments could be, especially for such a pretty girl.
His head bobbed up and down obediently when she asked if he could help her study, "Yes, yes, I can definitely help you, Ana." Toby confirmed with great confidence. If there was one thing this Ravenclaw was exceptional at, it was studying and coursework. He was such a know-it-all that he had already studied well into his seventh year, he already knew what to expect next year, because he was nosey with his mates homework. "What subjects do you need the most help with? Or what are you workin on?" Toby inquired curiously, eager to help her, peering over at her book bag slung over the other chair to get the party started.

THOUGH ANA TRIED VALIANTLY TO CONVERT THE Ravenclaw, it was quite clear that his heart was not in it. With every flex of her gripper, he seemed to drift further and further away. Ana took no offence, few people understood her diligence she applied to her form and technique. Especially the smart ones, or so Ana had observed over time. They had other things on their mind.
Thankfully, Ana seemed to win back his attention when she mentioned football. It wasn't the same kind of excitement she experienced, but it was a familiarity that gave her a bit more pep as she nodded enthusiastically, a grin breaking across her face. "Landon?!" She exclaimed, snorting slightly as she leaned back in her chair. "Of course I know Landon." The two went way back, their rivalry and friendship a thing of great suspect among their peers. "He's my nemesis." However, she said this with a strange kind of fondness.
Maybe it was true, like Toby said, that knowledge was power. But Ana wasn't entirely convinced as she shrugged. Plus, she had knowledge, just not the kind that helped her pass potions. "I just... sometimes homework is the last thing on my mind, you know?" Ana admitted, looking down at her lap minutely before smiling again as she looked up. Her mind shifted playfully as he tried to encourage her, his choice of words almost flirtatious, making something wicked flashed in her eyes.
"Oh, you think?" She retorted, leaning casually against the hard wooden back of her chair as her smile turned in to a smirk. "Well, now I definitely feel better." And she winked at him, the tip of her tongue poking between her teeth. Flirting was a thing Ana did often, sometimes without even realising. She didn't think it was the same for Toby, but that didn't stop her either.
It was back to business quite quickly, though and Ana scooted closer in her chair as she smiled her thanks. "Well, Charms most of all." Ana said simply, biting on the side of her fingernail as she frowned slightly. "I barely qualified to even take it last year, but mum says it's important." A lot of Ana's core classes were almost hand-picked by her mother. "I mean, I'm not stupid, I'm just not very good at the writing part. 'Show your work' and all that." Ana was more of an 'instincts' kind of girl, she had no desire to draw mind maps or focus on theoretical studies at all.
Reaching around, Ana slung her book bag up on to the table, the books inside thudding, some even squealing slightly. "I also have Arithmancy," Ana shook her head, world weary. "Mum... again." There was something to be said about strategy and the math that went in to perfecting a shot, but Ana hadn't quite learned the joy of it. She pulled the bottom of her bag and emptied her entire course load on to the table between them. Looking at it, she blew out a breath, the mass of scrunched papers poking out of books and crumpled between spines. "So... nothing much." She shot Toby her most winning smile, teeth and everything, in the hopes of buttering him up.

Toby was glad that Ana had realized The Gripper 5000 wasn't his style. Not even for the dreaded quill cramp. Maybe another day... He laughed at the irony when Ana revealed that Landon was her nemesis, because Landon was one of the last people to be anyones nemesis. The Puff was friendlier than a golden retriever puppy, she had to be joking.
"I just... sometimes homework is the last thing on my mind, you know?"
The Ravenclaw couldn't relate to that. "—Like what?" he asked innocently, swallowing sharply and trying to keep his face from going red hot. That could have easily been dismissed with a nod. Toby was very intuitive, he may not have had any game when it came to flirting or girls, but he certainly noticed these things... The change in body language, how they'd bite down on their lip, or stare into his soul...the innocent winks and sultry stares. Girls were weird, but he was so intrigued. This year he had been noticing a lot more things...girls were suddenly much more flirtier. Like now with Ana for example, the wink and smile sent him into overdrive for some odd reason, he was absolutely weak to the display.
He cleared his throat awkwardly and sat up in his chair as the Puff emptied the contents of her bag onto the table messily. Toby blinkingly stared at the workload her mother expected of her. That was a lot. He was glad that his parents didn't actually stress about his marks, he just really liked school and did good because he truly wanted to. The same couldn't really be said about his sisters, but that was a different story. "Oh, that's nothin'" he stated sarcastically with a chuckle, swatting at the workload dismissively. Flipping one of the squealing books over so it wasn't face down, "That's quite the workload..." he commented with a sympathetic smile. "You'll get through it, you just gotta prioritize and don't push things to the last minute. When you're rushing your work is going to be a lot sloppier..." Toby went on with his typical nerd spiel, his form of encouraging words. A string of words he had probably said a million times as a tutor. "I'll be honest, I know nothing about Arithmancy. My form of Divination would be tarot, so I'm no help there, but I got you on Charms and Potions for sure." he shared, feeling slightly embarrassed that he didn't know anything about Arithmancy. That had just never been something he really cared about. He preferred to keep arithmetics and words separate since enjoyed reading too much. "How are ya with your non verbal magic?" Toby asked her, still trying to gauge her skills in Charms and hone in on what she possibly needed to work on.

ANA WASN'T DUMB, SHE HAD KNOWN EXACTLY what she was doing when she'd winked at Toby. She wasn't exactly a fan of subtlety and what was the point when she could get a reaction like that? The stuttering awkwardness, the hard clearing of his throat as he shifted his gaze a little too late. She was perfectly aware of what she could do and Toby was good looking enough, and interesting enough for Ana to lay it on thick.
She scooted close to him as she laid out her work load in full view. She wasn't taking the fancy electives like Defence Against the Dark Arts, but her schedule was pretty packed when it was splayed out before him. "Yeah," She scoffed, drumming her agitated fingers on the table top as she glared at it. "Lay on a full sports and exercise regime and my diary is pretty full." She blew out a long and haggard breath, shaking her head as she shot him an almost helpless look. She'd heard the spiel about prioritising and delegating her time, but it didn't matter. She only wanted to play Quidditch.
Lifting her Arithmancy book from the table, she tossed it on to the floor carelessly and shrugged, "Okay, it's out." Smiling at him cheerily as she turned her attention back to Charms. "I'm not taking Potions this year." She gotten a high enough mark last year not to bother with it for her Seventh, plus it wasn't entirely necessary as far as she was concerned and she'd compromised with her mum for Arithmancy over Potions.
"Non verbal could be better," Ana admitted, leaning her elbow on the table top and her chin on her hand. She looked at him through feathered lashes and smiled lazily. "Verbal could be better..." She sniffed and rolled her eyes. "Professor says I talk like my mouth is full." She began tugging on her bottom lip, quirking her brows as she sighed. "It's not my fault if I still have a bit of an accent, right?"

Toby could still feel the blood flooding to his cheeks after she moved closer to him, he could also feel the warmth her body provided as he was trying to focus on the schoolwork she laid out before him. He twiddled his thumbs awkwardly, listening to her as she shared about her busy sports schedule. Tobias could relate, but more with his workload this year, he had taken on a lot. And he would definitely take on more. He nodded sympathetically, and the Arithmancy book went flying in his peripheral vision, thudding to the ground with an open spine, causing him to jump out of his seat. Tobias' inner Ravenclaw shuddered at her mistreatment of books, but outwardly he couldn't resist a full hearted chuckle from escaping his lips. That outburst was hilarious, it surprisingly put him at ease in some sort of weird way. "You definitely have a heavy workload, especially with juggling quidditch and any other extracurriculars. We'll get you through it though, one subject at a time." he encouraged, noticing her slightly defeated look before.
Ana mentioned that her verbal magical could use some work and he couldn’t help but laugh again when she pouted about her accent. Sometimes harsh accents effected spellwork, that was for sure. Toby had his fair share of botched up spells because he wasn't pronouncing it correctly, or he was being too timid and quiet. Offering the girl a bashful smile, "You have a nice accent, but have you ever tried 'tongue twisters'?" he asked her politely, trying not to get awkward. He could feel his face turn red at the word 'tongue twister'. Dang, he didn't mean it like that! "- or, uh, more formally known in literature, 'Alliteration'? It's all about pronunciation." The Ravenclaw hinted, before dorkily showing his off his own skills, carefully pronouncing each syllable, trying to hide his own soft accent, "Y'know...like....Wayne went to Wales to watch walrus'."

ANA SMIRKED WHEN SHE HEARD TOBIAS LAUGH just a little bit. She liked making people laugh almost as much as she liked making them blush. It was a non verbal compliment. She was funny, and she hadn't even told a joke yet. This was going exceptionally well, she reckoned.
"Yeah," She scoffed, wholeheartedly agreeing that her workload was far from light. "Ya don't say." She kept trying to tell her mum that it was too much, that she hated math and she didn't care about much else other than sports, but that didn't matter to her. What mattered was that Ana be 'set up for the real world'. Ana kept hearing a lot about this elusive, mystery world, but she had her doubts on how mad hard it was supposed to be.
"Aw, Tobs." Ana said, rolling her head loosely as she shoved his arm playfully. "Are you tryin' to butter me up?" She smiled at him and sat back in her chair, he was trying to help after all. "I've heard of 'em." She shrugged, having played a few with her friends for a laugh over the years. But, she was always terrible at them, so she tended to avoid. Ana liked being good. Plus, who cared about who did or didn't 'see shells on the sea shore', or Wayne and his bloody walrus.
"I admit though, I think there's far better things I could be doing with my tongue." She quirked her brows at Tobias salaciously, the tip of her feathered quill brushing against her bottom lip as she swished it back and forth over her chin and face. The soft material catching her tongue when she poked it out between her teeth.

When Ana asked Toby if he was trying to sweeten her up, he had a moment of nerd panic, only because he didn't know how to respond to that comment. The Ravenclaw chuckled awkwardly, cheeks flooding red hot, spreading all the way to his ears. As the quill traced the shape of her lips, chewing on the feather in a very 'sexy' manner, Toby was suddenly overcome with his teenage boy urges...He just couldn't look away, his warm brown eyes were glued on her, before he realized what was going on.
Toby swallowed hard, clearing his throat, his leg kicked the top of the table in an uncontrollable reflex as he shifted in his seat.. Toby wished he was more experienced in these things because Ana was very interesting. And pretty. He was easily putty in her hands. Toby raised a hand to scratch the back of his neck with a shrug, "Heh. Yeah, I bet." he squeaked, smiling awkwardly, still blushing so hard he felt like his face was on fire. How the heck was he supposed to react to that? 'I bet' was a terrible start. His hands were so clammy, it was all because of Ana. She had him so hot and bothered that he could feel himself going into full dork mode, Ana practically had him under her spell.

ANA WAS PERFECTLY AWARE OF WHAT SHE WAS doing to poor Toby. From the flush in his cheeks to his obvious inability to look away from her. She liked being desirable almost as much as she liked flirting. It always had results, and most of the time they were the kind she absolutely wanted. She had an eye for the ones that would play along with her. Or, the ones that had no idea they were playing at all.
With a tilt of her head, Ana almost laughed at the adorable way that Toby reacted to her teasing comment. In a way, she had been hoping it would end up like this, though she felt a little bad as he cleared his throat noisily and scratched his head, hopeless and blushing. "Are you shy?" Ana asked with a slow smile, leaning in close to Toby so that she could catch his eye. She tilted her head. "Hasn't anyone ever flirted with you before?" She shifted closer, crossing her arms and lifting her chin as she looked at him through her lashes. Studying had been long forgotten, this was by far a more enjoyable venture.

Toby couldn't believe that this was happening in the library right now. Studying was suddenly the last thing on his mind with the 'puff getting him all hot and bothered. Well, bothered probably wasn't the best term to use there...because this didn't bother him, he was just unsure how to react, always so concerned about being polite all the time.
Iliana was scooted so close to him, he could smell her. She smelled really nice. As she stared at him with an unfamiliar sultry look through thick eye lashes, he was flooded with this feeling of pinning her against a wall, which was a very odd feeling, considering he had never done that before. This was weird. He was frozen, staring back for a moment with his mouth gaped open. He made a sound, but no words came out. He nodded his head when she asked if he was shy, shrugging with a slightly bashful look on his face as his eyes tore to the ground. Then, she asked if anyone had flirted with him before... Now, he wasn't really sure. Was this flirting? He wasn't used to such forwardness. Toby felt her scoot even closer to him to look at the expression on his face, they caught eyes, which made him laugh awkwardly. His cheeks and ears were burning, "Uhhhh, yeah... No, I mean, no.." Toby was getting flustered, he was kind of just staring at Ana hoping the words would come. He breathed and looked away, "I-I--uhh--I don't know?" he finally asked out loud slowly to her, a slightly confused expression. The look on his face showed that he was sincere. This conversation was weird, but he wasn't necessarily ~uncomfortable yet. The nature of the conversation certainly had the teen intrigued, he wished that he could hide the awkward from his face.

PERHAPS ANA WAS HAVING A LITTLE TOO MUCH fun with the Ravenclaw, but he didn't look like he wasn't enjoying himself. Sure, he'd adopted a rather stiff posture, mouth hanging open, but he hadn't leaned away from her or gave her any indication that he wasn't interested. In fact, he looked very interested indeed, which only encouraged Ana all the more.
Leaning back on her chair, Ana's smirk was a little bit smug as she reached over and nudged Toby's ankle with her own, trying to draw his attention back to her and away from the floor. "I think someone probably has," Ana mused confidently, tilting her chin up and tapping it with one finger as she thought. "You probably just haven't noticed." And then she sat up a little straighter, wedged her fingers under her seat and scooted even closer to him, until their arms were brushing and she could place her head on his shoulder if she liked.
"I'm flirting with you, Toby," She told him boldly, turning her head with wide open eyes, her smile a ghost at the corner of her mouth as she attempted to be serious. "You're cute and smart," She nudged him with her shoulder. "And very helpful." He had, after all, offered to help her with her studying almost without any hesitation at all. Ana wouldn't have been so quick to kindness in his shoes. She was a bit of a lost cause. "I could teach you, you know?" She lifted her brows in challenge, as if daring him to agree. And then her eyes deliberately dropped to his lips and back up again, without any attempt at hiding her intentions. She liked transparency. "I'm very good."
