Jess loved Quidditch. It was absolutely one of her favorite things about Hogwarts and magic in general. Getting onto the Hufflepuff team her second year felt like her biggest achievement at that age and she was always practicing constantly. Of course, over the years she tried to work just as hard at her schoolwork as she did with her flying, but there wasn't always that same drive to get her homework done as their was to practice that new feint. Still, she did quite well with both endeavors.
Now she was in her seventh year, her last chance and Jess made sure she enjoyed every moment of it. Practices, games, as long as she was on her broom she wanted to enjoy herself. Though in all honesty, today she was quite annoyed. Yesterday Hufflepuff played Gryffindor and they'd lost spectacularly. It was almost an embarrassment how easily the other team seemed to win, though Jess wanted to put most of that on the fact that their seeker caught the snitch fairly quickly. Still, a game of 170 to 30 seemed pretty pathetic, no matter how you looked at it. Stupid snitch.
Due to their tragic loss, Jess couldn't study on her schoolwork. She couldn't focus on anything; her mind was too busy replaying their last game. So she made her way out to the pitch, broom in hand and she took off on it as soon as she approached. She'd start off just flying around. Then maybe in a bit she'd grab a Quaffle and practice some of her throws. Her body started to relax almost as soon as she started flying. Yes. This was why she loved the sport so much. She focused on circling the hoops, diving and doing all sorts of hard maneuvers as she warmed up, not even noticing she wasn't alone on the pitch anymore.

Edrik had been playing for Gryffindor’s Quidditch team since his second year in Hogwarts with the position being the keeper. At first, he believed keeper was a ridiculous position and Quidditch as a strange sport but both gave him passion and motivation – even keeping his anger levels low. By his fifth year, the Krum was congratulated with the blessing of the team’s captain as the prior was graduating. Grateful, the Krum strived to bring success to his team almost every time; which meant increasing time spent on planning routines and practice games and even changing the intensity of training on some days. At first everyone hated it but grew to love it eventually. But Edrik knew while Quidditch was important to him so were his grades. There were times he would find himself around Hufflepuff’s common room, rocking on the balls of his feet as he would wait for his younger sister to leave – resulting with an older Krum begging his younger sis for school help. No shame at all.
Now in his sixth year and one of the tops in most of his classes - (Thanks Ana) – Edrik continued to drive his passion into Quidditch. Which resulted with success after success as Gryffindor dominated most of the games. Yesterday was an intense match between Hufflepuff and Gryffindor which resulted with Gryffindor’s seeker catching the snitch very early in. Edrik was so proud. Though in the day of today, the Krum found himself determined to train a little on his own and even offered the team to come when they felt like it. Most of them declined.
Flying on his broomstick felt like the world held no power over the Krum. As cheesy as it sounds, Edrik loved flying and knew he would when his father laughed about his supposable “height-phobia”. Smiling to himself, the Krum started low, practicing tricks on his broom as if a Quaffle was approaching him. Soon, as he reached the levels of the standard rings around him, he knew he wasn’t alone. With the sounds of a broom wooshing around him, a smirk crept onto the Krum’s face. ”You do realise this is my training time.” Edrik called out to the nearby witch – not even noticing it was Jess originally.
”Unless you’re willing to leave – perhaps a small game shall suffice? On who stays and who goes?” | 392 words >> notes: let the competitive friendship start! |

Jess was so focused on her own warm ups and flying that she didn't even notice the boy on the field. Not that she would have cared, as a general rule. She was too busy focusing on her own flying to really care what anyone else was doing unless they were talking to her or throwing a Quaffle her way. She was outgoing enough, but Quidditch time was precious time to post people and Jess didn't relly want to annoy anyone by trying to talk to them while they flew.
However, when she heard a voice calling out to her, Jess was quick to turn around. A smirk crossed her face when she recognized Edrik and then she rolled her eyes. "Sorry, but you're alone. No team, no exclusive Pitch," she argued with a quick shrug before adding, "Besides, didn't you crush us well enough yesterday that I deserve some time up here?" Jess chuckled. Sure, she wished her team could have done better yesterday, but she also wasn't one to harbor a grudge. Anyone who knew her at all would know that.
She flew a little closer when he offered her the chance to play a game. "Hmmm ... I'll play, but I won't give any promise that I'll leave if I lose," Jess agreed easily. She loved practicing with people from other teams. They always went harder on her than people from her own team and it was fun to get to know new people. The question was: would Edrik care that she wasn't going to follow his conditions?

A chuckle left Edrik’s lips, watching as the two of them were in touching distance with Jess on his left side. Teasingly, the Krum tilted his body and his broom to the side, doing a loop under the girl so she was now on the right of him. While he had no means to show off in front of his friend? Acquaintance? Who knew what they were. ”I may be alone, but how don’t you know my team aren’t coming soon?” He called out; a smirk on his lips.
Truthfully, his team was nowhere to be found. With the intensity of the match the previous night, he knew every member on his team was exhausted, probably sleeping their victory off in the dorms or even in their classes. The Krum on the other hand only felt pure energy within him, energy he truly needed to burn off so he could come crashing down and sleep. ”May have crushed you but that doesn’t mean it’s time to rest.”
Edrik created some distance between the two of them as she accepted his challenge. ”Fine by me.” he responded, his signature smirk returning to his face. As he flew past Jess, a rush of wind pushed his brunette locks. The rush of air was one feeling Edrik truly enjoyed – hence why the Krum loved Quidditch. Flying higher, he turned his broom so he faced Jess once more; feeling superior as he ‘stood’ above her. ”Catch up then!” he called out.
The Krum knew of Jess’ position in Quidditch and surely vice versa, although while he played the Keeper position, the captain before him had trained the different ways each member of the team play. In terms of each position Keeper was his strongest with Chaser lined up behind it.

Jess rolled her eyes when the guy showed off, switching sides as he questioned her again. "I don't, but until they come this pitch is free game for anyone who wants to play," she retorted with an easy smile. Jess wasn't really the argumentative type, but she also wasn't the kind of girl who would just do what other people said and let them bully her around. She smirked at his comment about not resting, "Well maybe sleeping in a little bit would be all right?" she asked, more teasing him now than anything. "Looks like that's what the rest of your team is doing." Wow, Jess. Teasing the competition that beat her the previous day. Not necessarily the smartest thing, but Jess also didn't really care. She was just glad to be on her broom without the stress of winning or training.
He didn't argue with her when she said she wouldn't leave, then took off without another word. Laughing softly, Jess started after him, before he even called to her, telling her to do so. Once she arrived at him she paused. "What kind of a game are you wanting? One on one or a race?" She arched an eyebrow, waiting to see what he would want to do. She was game for anything.

A loud chuckle left Edrik’s lips, leaving him to fall back slightly, his broom taking him behind her. He looked up from where he looked down, a grin on his lips. Edrik loved to tease people while on his broom – truly showing off was the Krum’s nature. In his blood. The fact that Jess was teasing him continued to leave his grin on his lips – surely the opposition who brutally lost would be less brave to say anything? Jess was ruthless.
Edrik shrugged, in the mood for anything. ”What do you wanna do?” he questioned. Deep down, since Jess and her team lost a crippling game, the Krum boy decided to be nice, offering the opportunity to pick whatever she wanted. ”I don’t mind doing anything with…you know…” Edrik paused, his broom inching close so he was in whispering distance. ”A loser.” He grinned once more, a cackle of a laugh leaving his lips as he flew off, planning to avoid the future hits from Jess.

He was obviously amused by her teasing him back, which Jess took as a good thing. Truth was, she hated the fact that she'd lost the previous day, but that still didn't mean she thought Gryffindor was any better than her team. Sure, they did better yesterday but on another day there was every chance that Hufflepuff could have done just as well. Maybe not, but Jess was still going to act like her team could beat him. There were some very good players on her team, after all.
Jess' jaw dropped when he teased her, saying that he didn't mind doing anything with a loser. "You know, no one can win all the time. Everyone is a loser sometime, so you might want to lower that ego just a little bit," she retorted, not about to take any of his crap. Then she shrugged, "But I'm game for a little one-on-one if you are." Jess gave a sweet smile, sure that he was going to say yes now that she basically challenged him.

Edrik couldn’t help but let a laugh pass his lips. Ego? He thought. Edrik has never had an ego. Okay…That was a lie, but Edrik always believed it wasn’t so much of a deal. As the Krum relaxed on his broom, his finger touched the bottom of his chin where a few hairs had begun to grow – thanks puberty – and soon found himself lost in thought. In terms of Quidditch within Hogwarts, Gryffindor and Slytherin had always been the top best houses. Gryffindor for their perfected routines and playouts – thanks to Edrik and previous captains – and Slytherin for their continuous cheating spells or charms. God he hated Slytherin. ”Sure. That’s fair but right now…You’re the loser.” Edrik stated with a teasing shrug.
”One-on-one sounds find by me.” He grinned, his hands gripping his broom once more. When would Edrik ever decline a challenge? The Krum leaned forward on his broom, slowly moving before building up some speed, taking his position on his side of the field. ”Go ahead. Grab your Quaffles!” He called out, a sly grin resting on his lips. Playing against Jess wouldn’t only give him more practice but a lot more leverage against her if he actually won said challenge. ”Ready when you are.” He mumbled, knowing she probably wouldn’t be able to hear him but it was more so for himself. Egging himself on.

At least Edrik seemed good-humored enough. He was laughing, which seemed like a good enough sign. Unless he was one of those people that laughed when they were upset, or if he was just trying to hide annoyance. Eh, either way Jess wasn't going to complain. Being around someone that seemed nice was good enough for her. Then he was teasing her back, saying that she was the loser right now. Jess shook her head instantly, smiling easily. "Nope! I was a loser yesterday. Today is a new day, and I haven't lost anything yet." Technicalities, that's all Jess had right now, but she was good with that. She kind of hoped that teasing him like this would maybe make him take her more seriously. She didn't want him to think she was a pushover, even though her team lost last night.
Jess nodded firmly when Edrik agreed to a game of one-on-one. He told her to grab the Quaffle and she rolled her eyes before lifting her wand and summoning one. She'd brought a bag with her today, assuming everyone else would be too busy going to Hogsmeade to worry about going to the Quidditch pitch. It zoomed toward her and Jess caught it easily, turning to face him. She cocked her head to the side, seeming relaxed before she zipped to the right, intent on getting past him and to the rings before he could stop her. "Come on, come on," Jess muttered to herself, hoping that being smaller than him might help her be able to move more quickly. She'd never played just against him before.

Edrik couldn’t help himself from raising a brow, something he did when others confused him for their lack of enthusiasm or just strange words. Jess was kind of a mixture of the two. As Jess mentioned of today being a new day, Edrik couldn’t help but think of the infamous quote his father would always mutter to him…Not that he could remember it because his father hadn’t stated it in a long while. ”Once a loser, always a loser.” Edrik shrugged, the name and power he held getting to his head. Edrik somehow knew he was a better Quidditch player than Jess but then again the Krum always believed he was better than most people – which usually turned out to be true with just a tad bit of extra training.
As the Quaffle was summoned and reached Jess’ grasp, Edrik watched as his frenemy zipped past him, the rush of hot air blowing the right side of his face, messing up a perfectly good hairdo for the rest of the day. The young Krum groaned and flew after her, knowing it was possible he would reach her before she hit her intended goal. And he did so. Hovering in the line of direction that Jess was flying into, Edrik soon turned to his side, pushing her once their shoulders collided and flew downwards towards the falling Quaffle. With the ball now in his grasp, Edrik looked up at his elder; a grin on his lips until he took off, flying in the other direction where the two had begun.
Dark eyes looked back at Jess, who was slowly but surely catching up to the Krum and small ‘tch’ sound left his lips. Turning so he looped to the side, Edrik glared to his side, looking at his competitor. ”Still believe you aren’t a loser now?” He called out as the two of them turned to their right corner, Jess’ rings in his line of sight.

He was good. There was no denying that as he intentionally rammed her and then dove to get the Quaffle, smirking at her as he took off toward the hoops on the other end of the field. He was good, but he was obviously arrogant and Jess was not going to take this lying down. She shot after him, leaning close to her broom and urging it to go faster and faster.
"I haven't lost anything yet," she called back. "Don't catch your chickens before they've hatched." It was one of her father's favorite sayings and at the moment, Jess felt like it totally applied. She sped up as fast as she could and somehow could tell that she was about to reach the hoops before he did. Hopefully she'd be able to stop the Quaffle before he scored because if she didn't she was sure he would become intolerable.

The grin that remained on Edrik Krum’s lips only seemed to grow bigger with every move the two made on the Quidditch pitch. The Quaffle that sat comfortably in his grasp was held a little tighter as Edrik’s pace while flying increased. As he looked behind him, wind blowing against his brunette curls; the Krum noticed that Jess’ pace was increasing and she would surely reach the ring before he did. The Krum couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle, before turning back his eyes on the prize. ”I’d rather have an egg ready to hatch over scrambled eggs anyday!” While he didn’t understand the saying she had yelled, Edrik found himself responding anyway while the rings seeming closer than before. At the comfortable distance Edrik enjoyed to score from, the Krum’s dominant hand lifted and soon the Quaffle was thrown.
Dark eyes watched as the Quaffle flew within the skies in the direction of the rings and Edrik’s grin held high on his lips. But unfortunately for Edrik, he was just a tad too slow.

Okay, so Jess was getting a bit defensive, and she definitely did want to prove to Edrik that she wasn't just some loser who played Quidditch because she was the best out of a bunch of non-talented players, but she was having fun. She couldn't remember the last time she played one-on-one with someone, just trying to see who was better. Not that she really thought she was better than Edrik, she was only trying to prove that she wasn't worse. Still, she was enjoying herself far more than she anticipated, which was a good thing. It was always nice to be able to get out and enjoy some Quidditch after losing a game as badly as they did yesterday, even if she wouldn't admit that to anyone. She heard his retort and laughed. Obviously he didn't know that saying, because he wasn't making any sense. "Do you even know what you're talking about?" she called to him, unsure if maybe he had his own saying and she was just out of the loop or not.
Then, she caught it! Jess grinned when she felt the Quaffle as she reached to try and block his throw. She palmed the ball, bringing it back to hold close to her, trying not to show how pleased she was that she got it. Jess shot straight up into the sky, thinking maybe it would be more fun to try something different instead of simply racing across the pitch back and forth. She could get to the hoops any way she wanted, and maybe this would be more fun.

The next laugh that left the lips of Edrik Krum seemed to bellow in the area around them – only increasing in sound as he couldn’t stop himself. ”Of course not!!” He called out, performing many loops that seemed to echo out his laughter. Sure enough, his elder and fellow Quidditch enemy was a great player, but Edrik always believed he was, or at least could be better. And with a win against Hufflepuff under Edrik’s belt, he knew he definitely had more potential. That was until Jess caught the ball.
A groan left the Krums lips as he face-palmed himself until dark eyes suddenly watched his opponent zoom into the sky, a plan up her sleeve. Edrik hummed to himself and shot after the Dupont girl, his body leaning forward on his broom to increase speed and momentum for himself. The higher the two went, the more Edrik noticed the distance between the two of them were closing in. But Edrik had other plans, considering he assumed what would possibly happen next. As he followed her, after some distance, Edrik turned slightly, so he flew below Jess, but kept the same speed between the two of them.

Jess rolled her eyes, but didn't say anything when Edrik shouted that he didn't know what he was talking about. Good to know. Basically, it meant that he was probably just trying to distract her to keep her from playing her best. Then again, if he actually meant what he said earlier, he didn't see her as a challenge at all. Jess desperately wanted to prove that him underestimating her was a big mistake. She might not be one of the best players at Hogwarts, but that didn't mean she wasn't good.
Grinning when she caught the ball and taking off quickly, Jess tried to sense where the guy was going. Unfortunately for her, she couldn't hear him nearby. At least she'd been playing long enough to know that that meant nothing. Lots of Quidditch players were good at being quiet, especially when they were playing one-on-one games like this. It just meant she needed to be extra careful because she didn't know exactly where he was. That was okay though. She could work with this.
Still flying high, Jess dropped into a steep dive when she drew semi-near to where the hoops were, swerving to the right and left as she dove. She had no idea where Edrik was, but she did not want to give him the chance to take the ball. She angled her broom so she'd dive below the hoops, making a shot as she passed. Jess tried not to move, to give no indication of what she was about to do, but when she was just a few feet away she threw the ball toward the left hoop. It was a perfect shot ... unless Edrik came out from wherever he was hiding to block it. Jess was diving fast enough that it took her a second after her shot to pull her broom up so she could look at see if her plan worked or not.
