CLOUDS WEREN'T EXACTLY ELI'S SUPREME expertise, but he enjoyed the fact that he knew something about something that Ash did not. She spent so much time teaching him that there was a slight satisfaction in his ability to teach her something instead. Noctilucent clouds were his favourite and it showed in his smile as he turned to her. "They're Night Clouds," He whispered, as if they were a magic in themselves. "They're the kind that... glow after the sun sets."
Although, the peaceful contentment between them was quickly shattered as Ashley ate her first bertie bott bean. Eli was still wheezing and when he looked up to check that she was okay. She seemed fine, if a little red in the face. "I... got a little carried away with my spell, okay?" Eli explained defensively, though he couldn't help but laugh when she did. It had been lingering at the back of his throat. He shook of any access water, still grinning, before setting himself back down beside her.
"Bertie Botts Every Flavour Bean," Eli explained, leaning his head against the trunk behind him and sighing. "When they say every... they mean every." Eli found the tube under his thigh, turning it over and shaking it slightly. "Maybe save the rest for later..." He muttered, widening his eyes at Ashley as he slipped them back in to his pocket. His wand he set in his lap.
"God, I can't even cheer you up without nearly killing you." He sighed after a moment, though he was smiling. Quickly, however, he realised his choice of words and his expression sobered. "Sorry... I wasn't thinking." He shook his head and wished he could kick himself right in the ass. After a minute of stewing in his misery he nudged her with his shoulder and pressed a hand over his face. "I don't know why you put up with me sometimes," He groaned, unable to stop himself from laughing at his own embarrassment.

"Night clouds?" Ashley's interest was obvious in her tone, which she didn't mind because a second later he was whispering again, explaining that they were the kind of clouds that glowed in the sunset. His smile was brilliant and Ash couldn't help but return it. "Oh, I love those ones. They're the ones that turn all sorts of colors, right?" Her eyes widened a little when Eli said that he got carried away with his spell. She honestly hadn't expected him to use a spell to fill the goblet at all. "I didn't mean it like that," she insisted, chuckling a little under her breath. "I just ... I thought you'd just grab water from the lake or something ..." Ash trailed off before beaming at him. "Thanks for all your effort, even though it got you all wet," she giggled. Unable to keep herself from teasing him just a little, Ash poked his wet clothes when he sat down beside her. Eli started to explain about the beans and Ashley nodded slowly. It was no wonder she hadn't expected something like that. When she was in the mood for sweets she either went to the kitchen for ice cream or ran to Joe and demanded he make her something good. She hadn't really paid much attention at all to the confections here. Maybe that was a mistake, if she was going to be taken by surprise like this. "Are they all bad flavors?" she asked, handing him the others she'd taken, so he could put them back. Ash wasn't quite sure if she was feeling brave enough to try another one today. The smile froze on her face when he mentioned nearly killing her, her mind flashing back to the owlery, but Ashley shook her head, forcing those thoughts out. She didn't want to think of that anymore, especially when she was enjoying a good time with Eli. He apologized and she shook her head, "Don't be sorry. It's an expression," she insisted, her smile a little wobbly but still sincere. "You don't have to worry about what you say around me, I know what you mean." Eli never wanted to hurt her was what she knew. Even if he said something that did hurt, he never meant it that way. "And for the record, you do a great job at cheering me up." He nudged her shoulder with his own wet one and Ashley chuckled, leaning over to nudge him right back, "Because you put up with me, of course," she reminded him. "You're fine, Eli." Ashley didn't want him to worry about things he said while he was with her. She wanted them to go back to how things were last year, carefree and fun. If he felt like he had to walk on eggshells around her, they'd never get that back. Elijah Theron Fleming

AFTER A MOMENT ELI WAS HAPPY TO SEE THAT she knew what he was talking about. He nodded enthusiastically. Night clouds were a thing to behold. "Yes!" He exclaimed, thinking back to the impressive ones he'd seen before they had moved that summer. Back home, they had some of the most amazing night clouds he'd ever seen, he'd just never known what they were called before.
"The lake?!" Eli spluttered after a second, soaked from the waist up as he took a second to think about what Ashley was saying and then when he did he groaned, "The lake..." Of course, that was the obvious answer. Although, his mind had not immediately thought of it because he hadn't known whether or not it would be safe. The last thing he wanted to do was poison her as well. "Well... it was worth it." He sighed, shaking his head and the droplets from his hair as he sat back down.
"No!" Eli said quickly, "You just got a dud." He thought of all the amazing flavours he'd encountered, both normal and odd. "There's cotton candy and jaw breaker." He ticked them off on his fingers, almost grabbing for her when he remembered. "I got one that tasted like fresh, warm pancakes once." He shook his head blissfully. "Amazing." The problem was, of course, that you just couldn't be sure which kind you'd get.
Alas, it wasn't long before Eli opened his mouth and said something awful. He couldn't bear the look that crossed Ashley's face as she recalled what had happened in the owlery. He didn't have to be a mind reader to know what was going on behind her shaky smile. "I know, but it was stupid." He said, leaning closer to her. "I try." He added, with a tentative smile. And he did. He always wanted to make sure she was having fun with him.
They nudged back and forth for a second, even while he was covering his face. He peeked out from between his fingers, peering at her with a sheepish grin. "Suppose that's true," He conceded, his grin growing more and more confident again as he slid closer and knocked her foot with his. "I really missed you, you know that right?" He added after a moment of contented silence. Just to remind her now that they had the comfortable bubble of friendship around them. "I don't think this place has felt... right, until now." He admitted, to Ashley and to himself. Hogwarts was a dream, but it wasn't home. The people made it home, and Eli didn't have all of his people until he had Ashley.

The look on Eli's face when she mentioned the lake was almost comical. He made it clearly obvious that that thought hadn't occurred to him while he was trying to get water for Ashley. She laughed, unable to help herself. She nodded when he said it was worth it for him to get wet to get her the water she needed. "Well, I definitely think so. Thanks again," she teased. She appreciated how willing Eli was to go out of his comfort zone to help her. She knew he didn't particularly like charms, but he figured it out just for her, which made her feel important. Her vehemently argued with the idea that all the beans were as terrible as the one she tried and Ashley tried to listen objectively. He started listing some and Ashley's jaw dropped. "Are you serious?! Why did I have to get the habanero pepper?" She suddenly felt an urge to try some more, though at the same time Ashley didn't really want to. With her luck today, she'd get another terrible one and then she'd never try the stuff again. It was probably a better idea for her to wait for a different day. She shrugged, "We all say stupid things sometimes." Ashley didn't want him to feel bad. She couldn't bear the guilty look on his face. When he leaned closer, smiling a little and saying he tried, Ashley smiled. "You don't just try; you do it. I'll have you know, I'm not so easily cheered up as you might think. Most of the time it takes Joe ages to help." Part of that was because it was amusing to make Joe do all sorts of things to cheer her up, but at the same time just being around Eli made her want to smile. Almost always, and it would definitely be the case more often now that they were friends again. He slowly agreed that he put up with her like she put up with him and Ashley nodded fervently. "It is true," she repeated. He moved closer to her, pushing her foot with his own and Ashley smiled again as she kicked her own foot at his gently. He told her that he missed her and Ashley was surprised at how much his words pleased her. It wasn't the first time he told her that today, but now that she finally let go of her stupid decision to push him away, it felt nice. "I know. You know I missed you too, don't you?" He should, after her secret earlier that she ran for him and the fact that she still wore the bracelet he ave her. When he said that Hogwarts didn't feel right until now, Ashley scooted so she was right beside him, leaning her head on his shoulder. "I know what you mean. It felt incomplete without you." Ashley could hardly believe she was actually saying that, but at the same time it was so true. She couldn't keep things like this to herself anymore. She wanted Eli nearby. She wanted him to know how much he meant to her. Hopefully if he knew that, it would give him more of a reason to stay, which was what she really wanted. Elijah Theron Fleming

FOR ELI, THE MOMENT ASH STARTED TO TEASE him it was like everything aligned for a second. They were transported back to a better, simpler time. They had never fallen out and the past summer barren of her letters had not happened. But only for a moment, where he smiled so blindingly that he had to drop his head and jostle her with his shoulder to break his own stare. He simply tutted in reply, though he did not pull away when their shoulders bumped, the place of contact burning through his soaked shirt.
"I-" Eli lifted his hands in a mock shrug, "You have bad luck?" He did not have a good reply, though he enjoyed the look of mild curiosity that overtook her face. He would find her a better bean next time, even if that meant he had to try every one to find the best. Though, the beans changed so frequently that even he doubted hid capabilities. He'd still try though.
Still leaning so that they were joined at the shoulder, Eli could feel himself soften as she smiled at him, melting away his guilt by her own complete lack of judgement. "Your brother, right?" Eli said, skirting around her compliment as he turned his head, so warm around the ears that they throbbed with every wild beat of his heart. He knew vaguely who Joe was, and if correct, he was as intimidating as Ashley once had been for Eli.
Knocking their feet back and forth, Eli wondered if she missed him too. He sighed happily when she finally said that she had too. A fizz of relief buzzing in his chest as he rolled his eyes and pouted out his bottom lip, as if to question her for a moment before his face collapsed in to a smile. His Adam's apple bobbed as he answered her gruffly, "Yeah I know." Because even though he often doubted himself, he believed her in that moment. She had that kind of power.
Eli froze when Ashley scooted even closer to him, tilting his chin down to watch her as she leaned in to him and rested her head on his shoulder. He swallowed roughly, shifting to slide his arm around her back and hug her to him, his fingers pressing in to her side, the tips buzzing slightly.
"Yeah... incomplete." He echoed quietly, leaning his cheek on her soft, golden hair as he stared at the ever shifting sky. "They're turning in to Altocumulus now." He whispered, as if afraid to raise his voice in case it shattered the moment like he had so many times before. "Altocumulus... mackerel sky." He recited, his jaw shifting against the crown of her head as he watched the orange and red splash across the streaky, segmented clouds. And for a moment, he had to remind himself that they were just friends. Friends did this, right? He thought, unsure. But, he still pulled her close to him, unable to let go.

It was so nice to be able to return to their easy friendship, to talk with and tease Eli Fleming. Ashley missed it, far more than she really wanted to admit. Still, as Eli suggested that she had bad luck, Ashley scrunched up her face, her distaste at the idea clearly evident. She didn't want bad luck with those beans. It already proved a dangerous thing. "If I have bad luck with them a few more times ... I will probably give them up forever," she admitted. Ashley didn't want another repeat of the previous bean, or a worse one. She nodded when Eli asked if she was referring to her brother when she mentioned Joe. Laughing softly at the imagined look on her brother's face at the idea that someone his age didn't know him, Ashley nodded. "Yes. Joe is my older brother. He's a seventh year," she added helpfully. She was a little surprised that Eli didn't know who Joe was, but it wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Just a thing. She pretended not to notice him blushing, not wanting to make Eli feel more self-conscious than he already did. Sitting here with him, looking up at the clouds, Ashley couldn't hold back her smile when Eli admitted that he knew she missed him. Good. Even though she acted like a complete idiot pushing him away, she missed him the entire time and she wanted to be positive he knew that. Ash hadn't really planned to move closer to Eli and rest her head on his shoulder. It was really just something that happened. It felt natural and normal when she did it, and even more so when he wrapped his arm around her in a side hug. She smiled, not even thinking nor caring what this would look like to anyone who might be around. She wasn't even thinking about that, which would've surprised anyone who knew her well. Normally Ashley overthought everything she did in public, but this just felt right. She felt warm and peaceful with Eli's arm around her. Eli agreed that Hogwarts hadn't felt complete before and her smile widened when she felt him rest his head on hers. "Altocumulus," she repeated softly when Eli started talking about the clouds again, staring as they shifted colors every couple of seconds. It was an incredible thing to watch, even more so because of the company. She honestly hadn't imagined that anything like this would happen at the end of her rather dramatic day, but Ashley needed it. That was the great thing about Eli. Whether he knew what he was doing or not, he almost always did exactly what she needed. She sighed as the colors started to grow darker, the brightness fading from the clouds in the sky. Part of her wished she could freeze this moment and hold onto it forever. Sitting here with Eli's arm around her was perfect. "I don't want to go back," she whispered as the sun's light started fading from the sky, "but I know we should." She chuckled, pulling away just slightly so she could look up at him. "I'm being overly dramatic again, aren't I?"Elijah Theron Fleming

ELI DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING WHEN ASHLEY considered giving the beans up entirely, because he knew he could probably convince her if he found a good one. He just needed to find it first. So, instead, he filed it away as a challenge and let her win that one. Or, think she did anyway.
Joe, however, was a different subject entirely. They were in the same year, unlike Ashley and Eli, but were worlds apart. Joe probably didn't even know that Eli existed. Except when he was being called out of class, or ridiculed by the people in his social stratosphere. He worried briefly what the boy would think of him. Eli and Ashley were friends now, and he didn't think it was a secret either. What if he didn't approve of their friendship? He picked at his fingernail and nodded, "Yeah, I think we shared a couple of classes way back." But that was it.
Eli preferred the quiet comfort of her proximity far more than talking about her brother. The gentle brush of her hair tickling his arm where he'd rolled up his shirt sleeves. The warmth of her from his hip to his cheek. It was a peacefulness he hadn't been able to experience since before summer. Different than when he was with Wyatt or Zeke. It felt more intimate.
Soon, they faded in and out of chatter until Eli's throat was hoarse and the sky had faded to a burnt out purple. She broke it first and he wished she hadn't, but he knew if she hadn't they'd have stayed there all night. Ashley always had more courage than Eli. "Mmm," He hummed, his chin wrinkling as he bent it down to look at her just as she looked up. They weren't necessarily closer, but it felt different when he could feel her breath on his face. The frosted red tip of her nose just inches away from his lips. What if he kissed it?
"Y-you're probably right." He muttered, though his eyes had glazed over and become hooded. He pulled away before he did something they would regret. Untangling his arm from around her back and standing up swiftly. "I'd camp out here all night, but I don't want you to get eaten." He joked, though it was a little rigid as he held out a hand to help her up. "C'mon, I promised I'd walk you back safe." And then he rubbed any chill out of her arms and smiled at her, the corners of his eyes crinkling.

Ashley smiled when Eli talked about having a couple classes with her brother, but she could tell he wasn't particularly comfortable talking about it, so she let it drop. She didn't want to waste this time with conversation that made either of them uncomfortable. She was too busy enjoying how nice it felt to be so close to Eli again. She'd missed this during the past months, the peace and calm she felt when she was with her best friends. It didn't matter if they were simply hanging out or working on schoolwork or whatnot, she loved being with him. Now that she'd finally accepted his friendship back, the feelings went back to how they'd always been. Eli looked down and met her eyes when she mentioned that they could go back in and Ashley smiled, loving how she could see all the flecks in his eyes, even though it was growing darker outside by the second. Then he was pulling away suddenly, saying she was right and standing up abruptly. Ashley blinked in surprise. Did she do something wrong? His expression was different and she couldn't read it, which made her nervous. Even so, Ashley gave a wobbly smile as he teased her and held a hand out to help her up. She took it and her smile grew a little as he rubbed her arms a little and gave her a real smile. "Have I ever told you how much I don't like winter?" Ash asked as they started to walk, curious if he knew how much she hated being cold and if that was why he tried to help warm her up. Elijah Theron Fleming

ELI ATTEMPTED TO WARM ASHLEY UP GENTLY rubbing at her arms, the air having significantly cooled while they'd sat and watched the sun set. He offered his arm to her before they started to walk, looping it in to the crook of his elbow and holding her hand with the other to chase the chill.
"You don't?" He said, a curious frown wrinkling his brows. In all honesty, he preferred spring and summer, but he didn't mind the cold. "I dunno, I kind of like it." But when he turned to look at her it was to see the tip of her nose ruby red, a flush in her cheeks and he decided yes, he definitely didn't mind the cold. But, the noticeable shiver that ran through her made him stop.
"Here," He said quietly, untangling their arms to shrug out of his robes. He slung it over her shoulders, though being much taller it dragged at the back, but he didn't mind. They slowed to more of a stroll back towards the castle this time. "I kind of like it," Eli said after a minute, the fall chill cooling towards winter rapidly. "It's just... the end of a life cycle." He mused, tilting his head back and forth as he tried to arrange his thoughts. "Next stop spring..." Which he loved, the birth of a new year. Lambs and Jackalopes.

Ashley absolutely loved how sweet Eli was being as they started to walk back. Rubbing her arms, offering his arm and holding her hand. It was almost like he already knew what she was about to tell him and was countering it, keeping her close to him as they move swiftly back to the castle. Still, he seemed surprised by her announcement, frowning as he looked over at her. She shivered, leaning closer to him as they walked. "Not at all," Ash told him honestly. "It's just, I get cold really easy," she admitted, wrinkling her nose in distaste. "It's like, from the months of October or November until March I never feel truly warm. My fingers and toes almost feel like they're constantly numb." Ashley shuddered at the thought, even though she might have been exaggerating a bit. She whined a little as another thought hit her, "I think it's going to be colder here than it was back home." That was truly an alarming thought. Sure, Ash liked the fun things about winter, like playing in the snow and such, but she hated being cold. She blushed, feeling embarrassed when Eli released her and took off his robe, putting it on her shoulders. "Oh, no! Aren't you cold though?" Ashley didn't want to cause him any discomfort, though she also couldn't deny that she was much warmer now. She sighed a little, before turning to Eli again. "I don't mind the idea of winter, it's just the cold I don't like." Admittedly, cold was a large part of winter, but it wasn't the entire thing, was it? Elijah Theron Fleming

ELI SUPPOSED THAT MADE A LOT OF SENSE. COLD wasn't half as fun after a while. He thought he ran a little hotter than that naturally, or maybe he just had thicker skin. Ashley was quite a bit smaller than him. "Running helps," Eli said with a little smile, turning his head to catch her eye as he shoved his hands deep in to his pockets. He couldn't offer her his arm with it tucked away in his robes.
"Well, I am from California, so it's already way colder than I'm used to." Eli said with a slight laugh, but he kind of liked the shift from normality. The way that everything seemed to glisten with dew, especially in the morning. The air felt lighter, wetter. He was going to enjoy it while it lasted. "You can borrow my dragon-hide gloves if you'd like," He said, thinking of her chilled fingertips nestled in his robes. The gloves had been a gift from Ashley, but he didn't mind sharing.
"I'll be fine," He reassured her, pretending to jog on the spot as his breath began to mist in front of him. "We can run back if you want..?" He added, bending his knees as if to race her, but straightening quickly. He didn't want their walk to be over so quickly. "Maybe there's a Charm you can use to keep warm?" Eli said thoughtfully, tilting his head. He didn't know any off the top of his head, but he thought he might know somebody who would.
"There's this girl, Cordie?" He said conversationally. "She's a Hufflepuff, too." He did not divulge how they'd originally met, when he'd yelled at her and she'd almost cried. "She's a Charms whizz, I bet she'd know."

At Eli's comment that running helped with being cold, Ashley couldn't help but chuckle as she glanced over at him. "Guess it's a good thing I started doing that then, huh?" she answered back. She could still hardly believe that things were back to normal with her and Eli. They were friends again and it felt surreal. Her eyes narrowed slightly when he said that it was colder than he was used to, "And yet ... it doesn't seem to be bothering you at all," she noted, "or is it and you're just hiding how cold you are," Ashley teased, doubting that was it. Eli didn't seem to be super big into hiding things. He was pretty open, from what she knew of him. She thought for a moment, then shook her head at his offer, "I don't think it's cold enough for that yet ... but I might come to you in the middle of winter and ask to borrow them." Ashley couldn't help but laugh at the thought because it was definitely a possibility, since he offered. She laughed as he said that he would be fine and then started jogging, mentioning a race. "I think if I try to race while wearing your robes I'll definitely fall down. You'll have to find some other time to try and figure out how fast I am." She chuckled again, not sure if that was what Eli was doing but teasing him all the same. This felt so good! She glanced over at him when he mentioned using a charm to keep herself warm. "That's a good idea," she mumbled, frowning as she realized it was a pretty simple solution. Why had she never thought of it before? Then Eli was mentioning another girl and Ashley stiffened. She knew Eli was friendly, that he probably had tons of friends that were girls, but that didn't mean she wanted to hear about them! Her stomach twisted as he named the girl, saying she was in Hufflepuff and was a "whiz" at Charms. "Mmmm, you should ask her then," Ashley said, trying to keep her tone normal as she forced herself to keep that smile on her face. He was trying to be nice. She didn't need to get jealous now. But she was. "How do you like Hogwarts?" she blurted, trying to distract herself from her sudden emotions. She didn't want Eli to pick up on it. Elijah Theron Fleming

ELI NODDED, REMEMBERING HOW SHE'D TOLD him about her running over the summer. It warmed him more than his robes ever would and he dropped his head to laugh a little bit. But it was true that the cold didn't bother him. It wasn't so much that he didn't feel it and more that he did and it didn't bother him so much. He liked the beach and the warmth, but the cold wasn't too much of a leap for him.
"I just don't think it's that bad," He laughed, shrugging his shoulders up under his chin. She was far too concerned about whether or not he was alright. At the very least he'd offered his special dragon-hide gloves and while she refused, he thought he'd make a point to keep them on his person just in case.
"Damn it," He joked, stopping mid jog as she brushed it off. It was true, she would definitely trip. Eli sometimes struggled not to trip and they fit him, the Hogwarts robes were much heavier than the Ilvermorny ones. "I'll get you next time." And there would be a next time, and a next time and a next. He already wanted to do a thousand things with her. From running to hiking. They were friends now, they could do that.
Offering a warming charm had come to him out of the blue, and was quite out of character. His brain rarely went in the direction of spells, but he'd thought of Cordie and how she'd fixed his camera with such ease that he'd been gobsmacked. But Ashley didn't seem as keen as he was. He didn't mention it as she smiled, "Yeah, okay I will." And he would, though catching Cordie was almost impossible. She was often holed away in her dark room.
"I love it." Eli said instinctively, having often thought about Hogwarts differences and how he felt about them. "It's... so different but it's perfect." He shrugged his shoulders, thinking about all the places he was yet to explore. "I want to graduate here." He revealed, though he often wondered if he'd get the chance or if Ilvermorny would be fixed by then. "You?"

Ashley rolled her eyes and shook her head when Eli said he didn't think the cold was that bad. Of course he wouldn't think it was bad. He was too positive to get annoyed about something as silly as the weather. At least, that's what Ashley decided to attribute it to. Still, she was a little envious of his attitude. It would be wonderful if she wasn't constantly cold during the weather months. Eli swore, teasing her for her easy refusal to run with him right now and Ashley laughed. "I already told you I'll run with you. I'm curious to see if you're still faster than me." It was almost a sure thing that he way, but maaaaaybe Ash could beat him. Doubtful, but there was a sliver of possibility there. "Just don't forget," she teased, certain that he wouldn't. When it came to things like this, Eli got too excited to forget them, which was something she definitely enjoyed about spending her time with him. He said he would talk to his friend about the charm and Ashley nodded, looking away for a moment as she fought to calm her raging emotions. Eli could like whoever he wanted to. He probably already did and Ash was certain it wasn't her. They'd just gotten back to being friends, for goodness sake. She smiled at his enthusiasm when Eli started talking about Hogwarts. He was so positive about everything, and she absolutely loved it. Eli started to explain how it was different, but perfect and how he wanted to graduate here and Ashley nodded thoughtfully. When he turned the question back on her, she shrugged, "I like it here." A lot more now that they were friends again. "The classes are good and the people seem pretty nice. I love their grounds here." Then she sighed, "I doubt I'll graduate here though. I think you probably will."Elijah Theron Fleming

ELI WASN'T THAT COMPETITIVE, HE'D LONG SINCE resigned himself to losing every once and a while. But, he still felt a thrill at the possibility of racing Ashley. Maybe it was different because he'd been the one to inspire her to run in the first place. He felt a sort of... pride because of the fact. It made him eager to test it out. It was the closest he'd come to being genuinely competitive in quite some time, he found he didn't mind it.
And while there was a lull at the mention of Cordie - though Eli still questioned that feeling over and over, they quickly fell on to another topic. Ashley was notoriously easy to talk to and he loved Hogwarts, even if it was hard work. "Classes are all the same to me," He replied, shrugging. "Apart from Care of Magical Creatures, it's totally different here." Which had excited Eli beyond comprehension. "Different creatures are native," He smiled happily at that. "Same with Herbology."
Though Eli stuttered slightly when Ashley revealed she probably wouldn't graduate at Hogwarts. Eli almost asked why before realisation. "I always forget you're in year six." She came across much more mature than him. A model student and person. "Sometimes it's like you're older than me." He laughed through his nose at that admittance, shaking his head. "You've always got it together."
